#7. Eclectic Kitchen, 41 River Road, Grand View-on-Hudson

Park on the east side of River Road. Tour ticket holders may also park in the vacant lot north of the

driveway for 55 River Road.

Find something you treasure and build a room around it. That is exactly what these owners

did. Enter the front door and experience the aura of the original colonial house, built in

the 1700s. Then, appreciate the sklll and creativity of seamlessly blending in an addition,

which includes the kitchen area on the first floor. You approach the smaller but immensely

charming open kitchen, chock{ull of notable detail. The owners had an old toy chest, which

they had purchased in Cape Cod, that set the mood and motif of this eclectic kitchen. The

sides of the chest were repurposed as the cabinet doors und'er the Kohler Professional sink

and disposal. The cabinet doors, with antiqued wrought-iron pulls, are dark wood with

carved floral designs; the cabinet perches on squat, custom-made legs. Adjacent is a low

wood cabinet made from an attic floorboard that has been stained to echo the doors. A

Bosch dishwasher is to the left of the sink, with shelving above. A generous open space,

above the sink, offers a view of the breakfast dining area and of the deck, pool, and

waterfall in the backyard.

The island, of dark unhoned granite, with pots and pans hanging above, is an

ideal spot to settle on a wooden stool, enjoy a cup of coffee, and drink in the creative

appointments artfully executed by the designer-owner, who worked with David Sirois, of

Sirois Construction, Nyack. The top of the toy chest became the front of this island. Although

there is recessed lighting in the ceiling, a chandelier graces the area above the sink. The

six-burner Viking Professional range and hood hint that there is a lot of great cooking going

on here. The owners host large yearly theme parties, with live music, and find that everyone

gravitates toward the kitchen. To the right are the side-by-side Kenmore Elite refrigerator

and wine cooler. Barn wood was utilized for the other cabinets and the inside of the island.

There is a window corner with a desk. On the next wall is a weathered-white vintage piece,

from Gene Reed in Nyack; the owner added doors to the bottom so it could be used to store

bakeware. lts open shelving above offers additional storage space while accentuating the

warmth of a welcoming, active kitchen. The black sandstone counters are in keeping with

the dark hues of the toy chest. Beams recycled from the house's attic add a homey touch to

the room.

The kitchen adjoins the family area, heated by a wood-burning stove. The area behind it

was constructed with bricks from the house's three original fireplaces. A wooden piece over

the back door, which was found in the basement, was originally a hitching post for horses in

a tavern from the late 1 700s. Next to the family area is a cozy sunken kitchen/dining area,

also looking out onto the back gardens. The bottom half of the walls are barn wood and the

floor is c iginal.A custom-made copper table blends in seamlessly with the kitchen decor'

In the dinirg room off the kitchen, the owner is planning a unique wall treatment, by artist

Natalie Ru sell of Nyack, that will even further enhance the beauty of this gorgeous kitchen.
