COLLEGE OF HEATH SCIENCES

STUDENT TRAINING ATTACHMENT

INTRODUCTION

The student training is a mandatory requirement which aims at exposing the trainee to real public

health situation. The trainee will be attached to a health related institution and be a part of the work

force. It is hoped that by so doing he/she will acquire professional experience and relevant skills

in public health. By identifying problems and working out their solutions, the trainee will learn the

decision making that would be best to address public health issues for sustainable development.

The trainees will be attached to institutions, organizations and projects dealing with public health

concerns and b assigned duties. He/she should perform the assignment to the expected standards

in order to realize the goals and mission of the host institution and the university.

OBJECTIVES

The overall goal of the field attachment is to expose trainees to actual public health issues and

problems in the field and their management. The practicum should fulfill the following specific

objectives:-

a) Expose the trainee to actual public health issues and problems

b) Offer the trainee opportunity to acquire and apply skills that would enable his/her deal with

environment health issues and problem.

c) Expose the trainee to the process of planning, design, implantation and evaluation of

projects.

d) Offer trainee to acquisition, synthesis, reporting and dissemination of data.

e) Expose the trainee opportunity to learn the decision making process and develop skills in

management.

f) Expose the trainee to institutional mechanism for resolving conflicts between development

policies and public health promotion.

g) Enable the trainee develop co-operative attitudes and team spirit.

h) Expose the trainee to networking process and information sharing.

The organization is expected to give guidance on its goal and mission to the trainee and to

give assignment with clear instructions. The trainee should play a complimentary role as

an extra hand in the institution. The following may be taken as guide:-

1. SITUATION ANALYSIS

Situation analysis is the setting that makes somebody conceive a problem or a need. A need or

problem is a gap between “what is” (reality) and “what ought to be” (ideal).

Trainees joining projects may want to know how the project was conceived.

He/she should learn analysis of the following:-

a. Identification of needs/problems

i. Social –cultural and religious characteristics

ii. Physical conditions

iii. Economic conditions

iv. Resource available at the institution and the community

b. Prioritization of needs/problems

c. Cost effectiveness of implementation strategy (i.e. meeting the most need for the greatest

number of people at the least possible cost)

2. PLANNING AND DESIGN OF PROJECTS

The trainee will join an ongoing public health project in the institution. The project may be its

early or later and probably at the inception of another project. Whatever the level, the trainee is

expected to learn how the project he/she is attached to was planned and designed. The following

areas are important:-

a. Situation analysis –identification of needs

b. Objectives, sources, targets etc.

c. Design –mode of execution, key players

d. Funding –Sources, management, accounting etc.

e. Evaluation-problems and solutions, performance, both during the implementation

(process) and at the end (terminal)

f. Public health considerations

3. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT

The trainee should adjust and settle in the as quickly as possible in order to acquire maximum

experience within the shortest time. Although the trainee may not have participated in the inception

stages, the university expects the student to learn implementation stages carried out earlier.

The following areas need special consideration:

a. Observation of the ongoing implementation process

b. Identification of the key players and their roles :-

i. The community

ii. The funding agency

iii. The executing organization

iv. The government etc.

c. Identification of problems and constraints of implementation

d. Execution of routine duties and specific assignments

4. EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT

The trainee is expected to learn the evaluation process designed for the project he/she is attached

to, he/she should learn to evaluate the success of the project ,his/she contribution and that of other

workers. He/she should identify the problems encountered and how they were solved, and how the

same contributed to the success or failure if any. The following activities will be expected:-

a. Procedure of evaluation process

b. Application of the evaluation procedures

c. Performance of the project in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and impacts

The evaluation process should be continuous and cyclical

SUPERVISION AND EXAMINATION

Supervisor of the trainees will be done by the organization’s senior staff who will be designated

as the operating officer. He/she will be responsible for assigning duties to the trainee and also

determine level of performance desired for the task.

All assignments should be recorded in the practicum logbook and be countersigned by the

organization officer. A weekly summary will also be given in the logbook to cover each week.

Each trainee will also be observed by the university academic staff who will examine the

assignment entries in the logbook and countersign and weekly summaries.

The university staff will also conduct short interviews with the student and organization officer in

arrival at a fair assessment of the candidate. The operation will be examined through three

instruments which will form both continuous and terminal examination. Continuous assessment

will be made of:-

1. The daily assignment record (logbook)

2. The organization officer’s report and

3. The university supervisor’s report

The terminal examination will be made up of an original written report on the project by the

trainee; two bound copies should be submitted to the coordinator of the practicum. The following

will be the rank distribution for grading purposes.

2. Field/ organization officer’s 10%

3. University supervisor’s report 20%

4. Final written report by the student 60%

NB - The pass mark be 50%. A failed/ missed practicum can be repeated only once in the

succeeding year.

FINAL REPORT

The final report is the most important for assessing the trainee. The trainee should therefore take

it very seriously. The trainee should make on original and two copies all of which should be

forwarded to the coordinator. The student should retain his/her copy .The following are tentative

suggestions the format of the report.

1. Title

2. Acknowledgement

3. Table of contents

4. Abstract

5. Introduction

-History, objectives, mission of the host institutions, key players

6. Work experience

-Routine

-Staff and your anticipation

-community participation

7. Evaluation of the project

-objectives /mission

-successes/failure of the project vis-à-vis the objectives

-integration of the project goals and implementation with public health

programs

-Terminal evaluation/ conclusions, has the project/organization achieved

the desired goals/results

-has it followed the laid execution strategy

8. Recommendations

-Suggestions as to best ways to achieve objectives /mission /goals of the

projects /organization

-identification as weakness and proposition as to how to overcome them

9. Bibliography/references

-consulted sources need to be listed and acknowledged

10. Appendix (if any)

The student trainee will be expected to contact the organization where he/she is posted before the

practicum begins to find out his/her assignment

PRACTICUM REGULATIONS

The regulations in this context refer mostly to regulations touching on conduct of student trainee.

This section therefore deals with the status of the student trainees in the organization , their

relationship with staff members , the host organization supervisor and the procedures they are

expected to follow:-

The Relationship of Students with Staff

1. Students are expected to behave and act as actual staff in the organization; while on the

other hand, they will be assessed and advised by the field and university supervisor.

2. The university entrusts the student trainee to the organization and its head, hence they will

be expected to be treated as young staff members of the organization.

3. The trainee are subject to rules and regulations that govern the running of the organization

they are attached to.

4. Student trainees owe due respect to colleagues in the organization.

5. They must co-operate with the other members of staff and the demands and the routines of

the organization .the student trainees must be in good relationship with their university

supervisors and re ready to consult with them.

6. The student trainees must co-operate with the host organization supervisor in the field and

ensure that proper record of work is kept.

Role of University Supervisor

The supervisor will be selected by the JKUAT KISII CBD Campus, Academic board

Supervisor will be assigned to:-

a. Check student’s progress in the field and examine their work

b. Make observation report on the students and bring them back to the community

c. Guide the students in related to the practical work

d. Check the logbook which should contain all the necessary information and sign

appropriately

Absence and Leave

When a student trainee wishes to be absent or late in reporting to work prior arrangements must

be made with the host organization supervisor. It is serious breach of professional ethics and

require disciplinary action to be absent from duty without written permission.

In case of Absenteeism due to unavoidable situations such as illness or accident, the host

organization and the university must be informed in writing the soonest possible. Proper

documentation of such issues must be kept.

Pregnancy

1. Student trainees who are pregnant during the practicum must have a medical report from

the University Doctor to ascertain the state of their health and ability to cope with the

practicum.

2. Based on the doctor’s advice, the student trainee may or may not undertake the practicum.

Confidentiality and Trust

1. Certain matters regarding the host organization are confidential e.g. records and certain

documents, information etc. Therefore, the student trainee is expected to observe

confidentiality and work ethics of the host organization.

2. As a staff member of the host organization, student trainee may get access facility such as

computer, books, furniture etc. Such accesses are provided on trust and it is a matter of

professional ethics that such services and items are not abused in any way. A breach of

such trust during practicum, he reported to the Director/coordinator will be treated with

seriousness it deserves.

Drug Taking and Alcoholism

1. Drunkenness and drug taking during the practicum is not permitted and is a serious offence.

Failure to comply with the regulations leads to automatic discontinuation from the

practicum.
