The exact location for the school is not yet known, but the school will be located in west Harlem. 2. What sort of results have KIPP NYC schools had?  On the 2008-2009 New York State tests, 95% of KIPP NYC students scored at or above grade level in Math and in English/Language Arts, 83% of KIPP NYC students scored at or above grade level.  KIPP NYC student daily attendance rate is 98%.  86% of KIPP NYC alumni have matriculated to college. 3. How old do you have to be to attend Kindergarten at KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem? Children must be 5 years of age by December 31, 2010 to attend Kindergarten at KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem. 4. What is the school schedule? By choosing to enroll at KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem, families and students commit to an extended school day tha t lasts from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm on Monday through Friday. They also commit to attending a Saturday Family Academy that lasts from 9:00 am to 11:30 am one Saturday a month, as well as two and a half weeks of mandatory summer school session (8:00 am to 12:00 pm). 5. What is the school calendar? In general, KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem’s school calendar will follow the same schedule as the New York City Department of Education du ring the 2010-2011 school year. 1.  What is the KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem?

In 2010-11, KIPP NYC will be opening its second of four planned elementary schools. KIPP NYC Elementary

School in Harlem will serve 92 Kindergarten students. The exact location for the school is not yet known, but

2.  What sort of results have KIPP NYC schools had?

10. Do you have free breakfast and lunch programs?

Yes. Those students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch will receive breakfast and lunch (and an

afternoon snack) as they did at their previous school.

11. Will KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem provide transportation for my child to get to and from the

school?

As with any public school, KIPP will provide eligible students with a ½ fare or full fare metrocard depending

on how far they live from the school.

ABOUT THE LOTTERY PROCESS

1. Do you have to apply to get into KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem?

KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem is a public school open to all New York students that are incoming

Kindergarten students. The only information needed to enter the KIPP lottery is the student’s name and

contact information. No test scores, grades, recommendations, or behavioral history will be taken into

consideration. All applications must be received by April 8 at 5pm via mail, www.kippnyc.org, or in person.

2. How does the lottery work? Do I have to attend the lottery? How will I find out if my child was

selected in the lottery? 

KIPP NYC Elementary School in Harlem plans to enroll 92 incoming Kindergarten students annually, including

siblings and returning students. If the number of families interested in attending the school exceeds the

number of students we can serve, then we will conduct a lottery on April 13, 2010 at 5:30pm. All students

entered into the lottery will have their names drawn by an independent auditor. Open slots will be filled in

the following order:

1.  Returning students

2.  Brothers/Sisters of Current KIPP NYC Students (must attend the same KIPP NYC school)

3.  Applicants Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Residing in Community School District 5

4.  Applicants Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Not Residing in Community School District 5

5.  Applicants Not Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Residing in Community School District 5

6.  Applicants Not Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch and Not Residing in Community School District 5

Upon submission of the application, applicants will have the opportunity to document their free and reduced

lunch eligibility. Families do not need to be present at the lottery. Students will be contacted by phone to

discuss the expectations of the school in the order they were drawn until all open slots are filled. Families

may also call the school beginning April 15th to find out the number that they were assigned in the lottery.

3. Can I enter my child’s name in more than one KIPP NYC lottery?

Yes. However, you will need to submit a separate application for each school. Each KIPP NYC school holds a

separate lottery and enrollment process. 

4.  Can I enter the lottery more than once? 

No. Each child may only enter once. Any duplicate applications will be removed prior to the lottery.

5.  If I entered the lottery last year, do I need to enter again?

Yes. There is a new lottery every year. Waitlists do not carry over from year to year.
