About The Music:
KINGSTREE OVERTURE is an original composition in A-B-A form based on the concert B% scale and features contrasting sections as well as contrasting styles and colors. It was written to make your developing band sound musically mature, with attention to attacks and releases, characteristic tone quality and phrasing.
The opening cornet/trumpet figure, reiterated in the second measure by the low brass and woodwinds, should be played in a fanfare-like style, marcato (well marked) but not too short. Although all the parts are marked forte, take care that the drums do not overpower the wind instruments and encourage the wind instruments to listen to the drums for accurate subdivision of the beats. The descending scale in the low brass and woodwinds contrasts with the ascending scale in the flute and optional oboe and the decrescendo should be exaggerated, if necessary.
At measure 9 the upper woodwinds provide both a dynamic as well as a color contrast to the preceding section. A return to the opening theme ends the first section and leads to a flowing, legato middle section.
Please note that the bass line as well as the clarinets are marked piano and the moving lines in the alto saxophone and the melody in the flute and oboe are marked mezzo piano. Achieving a good balance in developing bands in difficult, but pointing out the different dynamic levels to the students should help as there is a tendency to play the same dynamic that they hear rather than what is actually written.
The recapitulation, measure 42, separates the opening eight measures into two-bar segments, each featuring a different color within the concert band. Take care that the melody is easily heard, especially the first clarinets beginning with the pickups to measure 46 and the flutes and optional oboe in the following two measures. The bass line in octaves presents the theme in measures 50-51, followed by the cornets/trumpets, then full band.
