PROGRAMMEWelcome to Southern Area Concert Band’s annual May concert. This year we have the pleasure of collaborating with Joyful Strains and Vocally Wild, two of the City of

Bayside’s premier community choirs, and Scott Harrison on the Wurlitzer organ. We trust that you enjoy this afternoon’s performance and look forward to getting to know

you over refreshments after the show.Darryn Wright, Music Director.

The Blues Brothers Revue Arranged by Jay Bocook and performed by Southern Area Concert Band, this

medley of Blues Brothers’ music includes I Can’t Turn You Loose, Soul Man, Soul Finger and Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.

Serenade Written by Derek Bourgeois and performed by Southern Area Concert Band, this

piece was allegedly written by the composer as a wedding march to confuse the guests as they try to walk in time with the music.

Love is in the Air Originally written and performed by John Paul Young, arranged by Ed Wilson

and performed by the band and choir, this piece was a hit single in 1978.

Carriers of the Light Written by Jerry Estes for the 1996 Olympic Games and performed today by the

band and choir.

Banjo on My Knee Written by Stephen C Foster (1826-1864) and arranged by Jerry Estes this

adaptation of Oh Susanna will be performed by Joyful Strains and Vocally Wild under the direction of Mr. Robert Dryden.

What a Wonderful World Written by George David Weiss and Bob Theile, this piece was made famous by

Louis Armstrong in 1968. Today it will be performed by the band and choir.

Hallelujah Written by Leonard Cohen and first released in 1994, this piece has been

professionally recorded more than 100 times. Today it will be performed by the band and choir.

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine Written by John Philip Sousa in 1923 as a dedication to The Ancient Order of the

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and donated to the band’s library by Mr. Keith Corcoran.

MEET OUR CONDUCTORSRobert Dryden owes much of his passion for music to his parents who were both brought up in church choirs and possessed great voices. The musical genes have flowed on to his occupation as Director of Music at Haileybury Castlefield's Brighton Campus, where he has been for the last 6 years. Robert's involvement in both choirs commenced 11 years ago. Five years ago, The Cantartas (an all women's choir) and Broken Voices (an all men's choir) combined to form the choir known today as Vocally Wild. Joyful Strains commenced as a staff choir from the former City of Moorabbin and has lasted throughout the years to accept any interested person!

Robert has a big interest in the local community, having been the Musical Director of the Bayside Carols at Dendy Park for the last 8 years. He is also president of the Eisteddfod by the Bay (formerly Mordialloc Eisteddfod) and coordinates the Choral Festival and Junior Vocal Section. In 2006, he was awarded Bayside's Citizen of the Year award for his contribution to music in the Bayside community. In his free time (!), Robert loves gardening, the St Kilda Football Club and singing songs from the 1960's, especially the Mamas & The Papas and The Beach Boys.

MEET OUR ORGANISTScott Harrison has appeared across Australia, New Zealand, the USA and England performing on theatre organs since 1987, and was the City of Moorabbin’s (now City of Kingston) ‘City Organist’ for a period of six years from 1987 to 1993.

Scott had the honour of being invited by the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (Vic.) to perform on the Kingston Wurlitzer at the opening of their 2005 National Convention, which also marked the re-opening of the organ after extensive renovations.

In 1993, Scott undertook organ studies with the late Father James Miller at his home in Fenton, Michigan, USA, and established an on-going relationship with some of the wonderful Wurlitzer instruments in Northern California, Chicago and Kansas.

In Scott’s own words, “Music is what makes the world go round, and I consider myself very lucky to be able to share my music with so many wonderful people all around the world.”

MEET OUR CONDUCTORSDarryn Wright joined Southern Area Concert Band in 1997 playing alto saxophone and took on the role of President in 1998. He held this position until taking over the role of the band’s Music Director in 2006 following Craig Seymour’s retirement. Darryn has been playing music (keyboard) sine the age of 5, with his first public performance not long thereafter. During his time at Southern Area, Darryn has played alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute and percussion. Other than for the band, Darryn’s passion lies in Musical Theatre and he has been Music Director for several school and amateur theatre company productions. Since moving to Melbourne from Tasmania in 1996, Darryn has also performed with numerous instrumental and vocal ensembles around Melbourne and is currently on the executive committee of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association. Outside of his musical interests, Darryn works as an electrician and manages an engineering company that specialises in boilers and pressure vessels, and is working through a mid-life crisis as he learns to fly.

Eve Macleod has been actively involved in music since she learned piano at age 5. Not long after she began to learn flute, clarinet and saxophone. Throughout her school years, Eve played in many ensembles around Melbourne including Peninsula Youth Music Society, the Jack Morris Big Band and the Westernport Regional Band. Since completing her Advanced Diploma of Music in 2005, Eve has taught at Wonthaggi, Leongatha and Korumburra Secondary Colleges, and is currently teaching at Mordialloc College. Eve has conducted ensembles of various sizes at each of the schools, including jazz ensembles, concert bands and musical productions. Eve’s first involvement with SACB was at our combined concert with members of Mordialloc College Senior Band held at the Melbourne Zoo in 2007. Since that time, Eve has been playing flute in the main band, and was appointed as Southern Area Training Band’s Conductor in 2008.

been listed here, but we are sure you will know the piece. Any prior guesses? Performed by Scott Harrison.

Old 100th Psalm Tune The text of this piece was written around 1560, and the tune will be familiar to

many. This arrangement was created for the occasion of the coronation of HRH Queen Elizabeth II and will be performed today by the band, the choir and the organ.

performed by Southern Area Concert Band.

Groban, today’s performance will be by the band, choir and organ, with Robert Dryden as our vocal soloist.

Strains.

words written by Bruce Woodley and Dobe Newton, music written by Bruce Woodley, and has been arranged for choir and band by George Brodbeck and David Lawrence. Performed by the band, the choir and organ.

Hallelujah Chorus This piece is probably the most well known piece from Handel’s Messiah.

Performed today by the band, the choir and the organ. We hope you enjoy.

We trust that you have enjoyed this afternoon’s entertainment and ask that you would please take a few moments to fill out our performance questionnaire. The information we gain from these surveys allows us to continuously improve the program which we

Both choirs come under the control of musical director Robert Dryden, who helps guide and encourage them to find confidence with their singing and performing. Entry to both choirs is open to any interested person that has a love for music and an interest in singing. No audition is necessary. Today, the choirs are being accompanied by pianist Clare Monks.
