FROM THE MANSE. . . Commonwealth Games Legacy It is hard to believe that it’s almost a year since Glasgow hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Last year’s celebrations were magic - with a wonderful Queen's Baton Party, with glorious sunshine, ice-cream & jelly, burgers, bouncy castle plus much more. We hope that this year's King's Park Community Festival on Thursday 23rd July on the anniversary of the opening ceremony will be the first of an annual legacy for the whole Community of King’s Park. A huge thank-you to all the local business communities again for their support along with Glasgow Life. As a church we have benefitted with the introduction of our Craft Cafe which made the banner last year and has continued on Monday afternoons very successfully. We have benefitted from the fruits of their labours with wonderful teddies, church mice and many more hand made items for sale at the Christmas Bazaar and Summer Fete. Glasgow Life Tuesday afternoon Youth Club has been well attended by local primary age children which is continuing over the summer holidays. The Men's Carpet Bowlers have also be helping the young people to experience carpet bowling very successfully. Messy Church on the first Saturday of the month ran from September to June and again many families attended and enjoyed crafts, bible stories and songs as well as sharing a meal together. God Tock has just finished and we are now out and about at 7pm on Monday evenings for our annual Prayer walk around our Parish. Easy walking and all welcome. King's Park Church has certainly been buzzing with activity and over the summer this will continue. God is with us always and so whatever we are up to this summer God, through his Holy Spirit, goes with us. Whether we are away on holiday or chilling out at home, God wants to be part of our everyday lives in a close up and personal way even as we relax and life slows down for a while. I hope that whatever you are doing this summer that you relax and enjoy some time with family and friends and join with us on the 23rd July 11am- 1 pm. Wishing you all God's blessings,

Editor’s Extras… Here comes summer - weather a bit spasmodic this year, but a time for holidays and a change to the routine nature of our lives. So far, our summer activities have included successful Christian Aid collections, textile collections and summer fete. Still to come, a Community Festival in July and the 85th Anniversary Celebrations at the beginning of September. We may slow down a little but we never stop. Our questioning series “Both Sides Now” starts this month and any response is welcome. There is also a poem illustrating, I hope, the life and work of our Pastoral Assistant and a section on the 2015 General Assembly. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Kirk Session Report General - The Session congratulated Norman Afrin on his review and assessment toward his studies for the Ministry. In July and August there will be only one Sunday Service at 11am. A gift weekend to be held in September as part of this year’s Stewardship campaign. Presbytery - Possible introduction of pioneer ministry which is involved in establishing new faith communities. Restructuring Glasgow Presbytery into 5 local areas to concentrate on specific business relating to these areas. This is to be considered later in the year. Craft Café - Potential grant available from Glasgow Life for work carried out on behalf of the community. (Fetes, etc.) Junior Brigade - There is a need to replace 2 officers resigning due to other commitments. Congregational Board Report Financial - Details to be found elsewhere in the magazine. Property - Cost and installation of barbed wire on the roof, to prevent theft, to be finalised. The replacement of manhole covers and drainpipes, due to deterioration, was agreed. Gardening - Weed suppressing membrane installed in Sensory Garden at side of the Church along with 4 lights and 2 archway spotlights. Staffing - a special clothing allowance was agreed for the organist. Kitchens - Maintenance inspection on cookers and dishwasher to be carried out.

Prayer Focus Heavenly Father - we pray that members of our Congregation receive comfort in times of distress and also practical and emotional support, especially for those who have been bereaved. We Pray for our Prayer Group and Bible Study (God Tock) as we undertake our Summer Prayer Walk within the Parish and also for other Churches within the Presbytery as they meet their respective challenges in serving you. We Pray that everyone within our Church has a refreshing holiday and can return with renewed vigour for the new session. Amen.

85th Anniversary Celebration It is hoped to have a show/exhibition/history of King’s Park Church to illustrate, not only the building blocks of our Church, but also pictorially, changes to society. Therefore, if you have any photographs (including wedding photographs), films, DVD’s, videos etc.; or just some anecdotes I would be pleased to hear from you. This is “pencilled in” for the beginning of September, so as soon as possible please. Wilson Paterson

THE MAGAZINE

This is a reminder that the magazine can be found online on our website (www.kingsparkchurch.co.uk). It would be of assistance to the Magazine Team if this was suitable for your use rather than a paper copy being delivered to you. Of course we will continue producing the hard copy but it would helpful to receive your comments. WP.

Prayer Walk around King’s Park

Following the success of last year’s Prayer Walk we will be continuing it this year, again around the streets of our Parish area. If you would like to join us, we will be meeting at the Church at 7pm and walk for about an

hour, at a sedate pace, stopping regularly at corners of the streets to pray for those in these streets. This was a great opportunity to get to know folks in our neighbourhood and meet some of our young people. We start on Monday 29th June and continue for 6 weeks of the school holidays. Everyone in the Parish is welcome to join us.

WORLD MISSION

The World Mission Stamp Appeal for 2014 raised £4,627 for Dorcas Refuge House for victims of domestic abuse. The appeal for 2015 supports The Church of Scotland HIV programme. Bring your used stamps to the Post Box. Thank you!

SOCIAL AND FUNDRAISING NEWS A big thank you to everyone who donated to our spring textile collection, we raised the grand sum of £ 354.42 Our winter collection will be October/November time, look out for the dates in the intimations and magazine. A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to help at our Summer Fete this year. Despite the torrential rain and gale force winds that morning we raised a very impressive £1,392 so thank you if you came along and supported us. We are planning a Christian Aid Quiz in September so look out for details in the next magazine. We are now taking a well earned rest over the summer, I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to the whole team for their dedication throughout the year, for their support to me and their infectious enthusiasm for everything that we organise. This committee wouldn’t work without you, so thank you to Sandra Anderson, Arlene Bryson, Margaret Key, Laura Kirkwood, John McCabe, Sandra McCutcheon, Margaret Mills and Janet Troop. Enjoy your break! Lynda Young, on behalf of the Social & Fundraising Committee

CARPET BOWLS At the time of writing a number of events have taken place. The singles semi final was played on the 15th of April. Ricky McDermott v Ian Barr. Ricky was the winner and on the 24th April the final was played. Ricky McDermott v Bill Todd, Ricky being the winner. Due to players not being available the pairs tie will be played at a later date. Our AGM was held on the 29th of April when we had the company of our honorary president Reverend Sandra Boyd, who presented singles and aggregate prizes. Aggregate winner was J Riddell, runner up Ian Barr. Singles winner Ricky McDermott, runner up Bill Todd. During the season, children 5-9 years old, from “Glasgow Life” have been watching the bowls through the door windows. When our season finished they were invited to try the bowls. They have been playing bowls and other activities with ‘great gusto’ on Tuesdays. We found the five to seven year old group were better on a shortened carpet while the older ones were starting to make use of the ‘bias’ to play past the ‘stick’. Perhaps a future bowler will develop from this group of happy players. Jim Riddell

Thanks . . . I would like to thank Sandra for the lovely flowers I received on the occasion of my 90th birthday. All good wishes, Helen Riddell Many thanks to Sandra and Raymond for all the loving care shown to Jimmy and ourselves at this sad time, we will be eternally grateful to them both. We also wish to thank the gents’ carpet bowls and all friends for the many beautiful flowers and cards received. I would also like to thank my Elder, John McCabe who has always been there for me over many years, thank you John. Jean and Jane McCarry The Pathfinders would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our coffee morning on Saturday 25th April. It was great to celebrate our 50th birthday with you, both then and at the BB service on Sunday 26th. We are delighted to have raised £402.67 on the morning, with the funds supporting the Pathfinders and the Pathfinder Guide Dogs charity. A huge thanks to everyone who most generously sponsored me to run the London Marathon in aid of Arthritis Research UK. I have been overwhelmed with the generosity from all my friends at Kings Park. With your help we have raised about £4,100 which will go towards much needed research to help all folks living daily with the pain and challenge of arthritis. For those who are interested in the numbers, I completed the marathon in 3 hours, 42m and 42s. Thanks again and best wishes. Ken McInnes

CHURCH HOUSE – Summer Update Group Sessions

Move over, Sir Chris Hoy, our toddlers are aiming for medals! Some of

the Parents & Toddlers group participated in “Balance-ability”

sessions at the Emirates, and had a great time finding their balance

on the bikes, although a lot of them were looking round for their

stabilisers!

Other groups have enjoyed basketball, supporting the Glasgow Rocks,

getting involved in a 6 week graffiti and street dance project, but

still finding time for football, teambuilding, baking and FUN!

Workshops

A Triple P (Positive Parenting Programme) was well received by

parents who wanted extra advice with bedtime routines, aggression,

shopping and sibling rivalry.

Cooking sessions were enjoyed by adults from the local community –

trying new ingredients and recipes, discussing healthy options and

portion size. Staff enjoyed the delicious smells coming from the

kitchen!

New Church House Building

Still very exciting times with our new build plans. The recent

consultation events provided loads of feedback and suggestions on the

new building layout and facilities, which have been taken on board.

THANK YOU to all the people who help and support our work. It is

much valued and appreciated – please keep up the good work. Thanks

too for the continuing financial support we receive from other

churches, enabling us to provide more opportunities to our young

people.

Is there anyone in our congregation who would be seriously interested in helping? Due to the club’s wide and varied programme, there’s always something for someone to do, and the commitment needn’t be too onerous – once a week, once a fortnight or even once a month. If anyone is interested please

speak to Alan Pratt on 07776 328914 and

Our Ray of Sunshine . . . Our Pastoral Assistant, he never casts a frown Even to his people, who must sometimes get him down He has to deal with all requests, be patient to the end But he has one advantage; he always has a friend. He’s the Church’s link to housebound; the aged of our clan To chat, drink tea and pray a bit, a very busy man He also visits hospitals, to see the sick and tired He most likely feels like that himself, but keeps himself “hot wired” He gives advice on filling forms, helps babies who are born He gives advice on everything, and “runs” a coffee morn He gives lifts to those that need them, and lifts their spirits too He also cuddles quite a lot - in his work, that’s what you do. He takes assembly at the school, but questions give him pause As one wee girl said to him, “are you really Santa Claus?” He’s at Dementia Café; the sounds system and the screen Attends at most Church functions, still smiling, and still keen He takes services of worship, funerals by the ton And stands in at the Prayer Group, his work is never done He attends the Bible Study; his contribution lends And amid his quick “one-liners”, a myriad of friends He’s considered Sandra’s right hand man, and left hand man as well He has a loving family, also patient truth to tell So, he’s a “Jack o’ a’ things”, as you can plainly see Would I be keen to have his job? Not on your life, not me!

Page 16: King’s View

16

BOTH SIDES NOW

The word on the streets indicates the Church is dying, and this seems to be substantiated by Assembly Reports and falling numbers. But, is the spiritual life of individuals declining? Do people need somewhere to go to be with others for sympathy and encouragement and to formulate standards for themselves? The obvious answer is Yes and that place is the Church, our Church, with its beliefs and its structure which will give hope, contentment, love and charity to the community, through worship and fellowship. But, although the Church consists of the people, it is also a building which needs repairing at times, which needs funding at times and which needs administering. So, how does it work? Over the next year it is hoped to show different aspects of operating the various functions of the Church, today, at a time of decline, both spiritual and temporal. Joni Mitchell, a songwriter, composed a song called “Both Sides Now”, which captures the essence of individuals questioning life, love and feelings: Forgive the slight adaptation: “I’ve looked at life (Church), from both sides now, From give and take and still somehow, It’s life’s illusions I recall, I really don’t know life (Church) at all” The first question considered is “Why go to Church?” Dr William Barclay had five reasons why we ought to go to Church. 1. To let others see us going, telling the world where our heart

lies. 2. To share in the Fellowship of Christian people. 3. To uphold the hands of the preacher promoting the “feel” of the

service.

Page 17: King’s View

17

4. To Worship, to wait upon, and to listen to the Word of God. (This done, not only through the sermon, but through prayers, music, offering and perhaps a sacrament.

5. To do it as an act of spiritual discipline and to consider it a privilege to go.

So let us consider our Church, question any aspects of its functions today, and hopefully, showing loyalty by taking a greater part from whichever side you feel can cement its future. Next time: Structure. On Sunday 24th of May we welcomed three very special visitors to our morning worship. Julia, Ticia and Jo were visiting Scotland from Mooresville, North Carolina. They had stayed in the Manse in 1956 when their father, Everette Moye exchanged pastorates with Reverend Robert Paterson. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit and were able to spend some time in the Church after the service meeting our very own Wilson Paterson!

What happened to the ‘’Men’s association’’

As a male member of our church, who is working full time, I have recently noticed certain restrictions on the number of clubs or organisations that I can join. Most of them are mainly for females or are run either through the day or at weekends. I have been informed that there once was a men’s association in the church and I was wondering if anyone had more information about what went on and how it was organised. Any information would be gratefully received as it would give not only myself but maybe others in the same situation something to look at starting up again. On a separate issue, one of my passions is fishing and I was wondering if anyone in the church fancied getting together for a days fishing during the summer? Possibly making a day trip of it for both men and women. I look forward to your response. God bless. Dougie Mills

GOOD SAMARITAN

I would like to thank the person who handed in my brooch which I had mislaid in the Church. It was very precious to me and full of sentimental value. I was over the moon to get it back. Thanks again to the person who found it. Betty Thomson On a lighter note . . .

SPREAD THE WORD

The Baptist Church down our way has always caught my attention with a series of posters that make you smile and think at the same time. The latest one reads “The Hokey-Cokey is not what it’s all about”
