The perfect summer experience

With over 30 years experience of running summer schools for young people from all over the world, Kings has given thousands of students a summer they’ll never forget.

To give our students the best possible experience, we make sure all our summer centres are in ideal locations, with excellent facilities and highly-motivated, well-trained staff.

We offer only the highest standards of teaching and supervision, and make sure that each child’s safety and well-being are always our top priorities.

Each year we strive to offer innovative new courses to suit our students’ interests, and exciting new locations which each bring something unique to our choice of destinations.

For 2015, we are delighted to be offering new residential programmes at a range of prestigious new locations — Christ Church College and Cheltenham College in the UK, and Concordia College, New York in the USA.

We look forward to welcoming your child to Kings.

Programmes for all interests

At Kings, our summer programmes are both structured and fun. This way, our students are happy, enthusiastic and motivated to learn. We offer programmes for juniors, teenagers and young adults. Our programme range includes:

1. On-campus residential programmes for juniors (age 10 – 16)

• First-class school and university campuses in the UK and the US

• Core programme: Active English (see p.8)

• Fully inclusive and fully supervised for complete peace of mind

2. Vacation Extra programmes for teenagers (age 13 – 17)

• Available at UK City Summer Centres

• Supervised but with some freedom — ideal for teenagers

• Available with homestay or residence

3. Vacation English programmes (average age 16 – 20)

• Available at US and UK City Summer Centres

• Compulsory lessons, optional activities and excursions

• Minimal supervision (but assistance always available)

• Available with homestay or residence

Choosing the perfect summer for your child is easy.

We offer a range of great locations and summer experiences, at both our Residential Summer Centres and City Summer Centres. Programmes are carefully designed for youngsters of different ages,

needs and interests. You are sure to find the perfect location for your child.

Our core summer programmes — Active English, Vacation English and Vacation Extra — feature English plus activities while our specialist programmes are designed for more academically-minded students.

RESIDENTIAL SUMMER CENTRESOur Residential Summer Centres provide an all-inclusive campus experience. They offer superb facilities in some of the finest locations throughout the USA and UK. Your child will enjoy a perfect summer of learning, sports and activities in a safe, secure campus environment. Meals and accommodation are provided on campus, with separate residential facilities for boys and girls. There are also regular, fully supervised excursions.

Parent and ChildMoreton HallChild age range: 3 – 7, 8 – 13 This unique programme allows both parent and child to enjoy an active and fun vacation while learning about life in a UK boarding school. It features separate programmes for parents and children, plus activities to participate in together.

Intensive Academic (Pre-boarding school)Bath (Downside)Age range: 12 – 16 This programme provides students with the opportunity to study a range of academic subjects and gain valuable experience of life in a top UK boarding school. Subjects include Maths, Science and Geography.

Intensive EnglishCheltenhamAge range: 12 – 17 This programme is designed to help students make maximum progress in spoken English. Students prepare for the Trinity College London GESE exam in spoken English.

Intensive Academic EnglishOxford (Christ Church) Age range: 16 – 19 This prestigious course is designed to prepare students for the English-speaking academic world. It is aimed at learners who are contemplating taking a degree course in an English-speaking university.

Typical age range: 10 – 17

This fully-inclusive programme is designed specifically to improve your child’s English while also providing a wide range of sports, activities and excursions for them to enjoy with students from all over the world. Lessons, accommodation, meals and most of the activities all take place in a safe, secure campus environment.

RESIDENTIAL SUMMER CENTRES CITY SUMMER CENTRESOur City Summer Centres in Boston, Los Angeles, Bournemouth, London and Oxford provide a range of summer programmes for teenagers and young adults in a city location. The programmes at our City Summer Centres allow for more individual freedom, but still in a secure environment. Facilities are located both on site and off site.

Vacation EnglishBournemouth, London and Oxford Typical age range: 16 – 22This programme offers a combination of English lessons and optional sports and activities, plus a weekly excursion. It is aimed at older teenagers and young adults, with an average age range of 16 – 20. Accommodation is available either in off-site residence or homestay.

Vacation CourseBoston, Los Angeles (Hollywood)Typical age range: 16 – 20This flexible, great value course is ideal for older teenagers or young adults. Only English lessons are compulsory, giving plenty of free time for a range of optional activities or excursions.

Intensive Academic (Pre-university)Oxford, St. JosephsAge range: 15 – 17.Offered exclusively at our Oxford City Summer Centre, this programme offers a combination of general English lessons, academic subjects and IELTS preparation. Students also have a programme of excursions. Accommodation is available in off-site residence (aged 16+) or homestay (aged 15).

Vacation ExtraBournemouth and LondonTypical age range: 13 – 17

The Vacation Extra course is aimed at teenagers who are looking for a combination of structured study and activities, and some free time. Activities and excursions are compulsory, but on Sundays and after school students are not supervised. Accommodation and some activity venues are located off site.

Filmcraft (Cheltenham)Students learn about film-making and can contribute to every aspect of production, including script-writing, directing, acting, camera-work, lighting and digital editing.

Showtime (Cheltenham)Students work together to plan and perform a short musical or play for performance before the whole school. Students can direct, perform, design costumes and scenery, and use sound and lighting equipment.

Digital photography (Bath)Students learn about digital photography including the main functions of digital cameras, producing special effects and working in different environments. Students also learn how to photograph a range of subjects and produce a photo exhibition, portfolio or online gallery.

Cookery (Bath)Students learn how to cook traditional British food and international food, and make a range of dishes from start to finish. Many skills are covered, including pastry-making, meat and vegetable preparation, making dough and cooking pasta, rice and potatoes. Students also learn about food hygiene.

Adventure Activities (Pangbourne)A range of exciting outdoor activities including archery, quad bikes, mountain bikes, high ropes and orienteering. All activities are fully monitored by professional staff.

Fashion Week (London Farringtons)Students will design and make innovative outfits using a variety of materials to prepare for a catwalk fashion show for the whole school. Students can also get involved with the fashion show photography, music, choreography, lighting, make-up, production, promotion and filming.

SPECIALIST ACTIVITIESIn addition to our standard range of activities, the excellent facilities and expert staff at our locations mean that we are able to offer a range of specialist options.

These activities are designed to broaden our students’ interests and teach them valuable skills which can be used in either an educational or recreational context. They take place during normal activity sessions, for at least four hours per week, and are available at our Cheltenham, Bath, Pangbourne and Farringtons Residential Summer Centres.

Kings Summer attracts students from over 50 countries each year. So your own child will share great times with friends from all over the world. This means they will be able to experience other cultures when they are in the UK or USA. Program available

Active EnglishThis course is specially designed for juniors and teenagers, and offers the perfect balance of lessons, sports, activities and excursions.

15 hours of English per week

Duration: 1 – 6 weeks (1 week bookings only accepted for 22, 29 July)

Start dates: 24 June; 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 July

End date: 4 August

Minimum entry level: Beginner

Age range: 12 – 17

What's included?

Lessons and learning

All lessons, plus placement and progress tests and an end-of-course certificate.

Excursions

One full-day and two half-day excursions per week (one entrance included). Full-day excursions include Disneyland, Santa Monica, Six Flags, Universal Studios, Catalina Island, Huntington Beach and San Diego Zoo. Parent and ChildThe Parent and Child programme at Moreton Hall is a unique programme which gives parents and their children the opportunity to enjoy an active and fun English language experience while staying together in a traditional English boarding school. Parents and children have separate English lessons but have excursions and some activities together.

15 hours per week of English language lessons / language-based activities plus a full programme of sports, activities and excursions.

Duration: 1 – 7 weeks

Age range (child): 3 – 13 (children are divided into two age groups for lessons/activities: 3 – 7 and 8 – 13)

Parents' Programme: The course consists of 15 hours of tuition per week. Levels of English will be assessed upon arrival and then teaching takes place in small groups every weekday morning. Every afternoon and at weekends there is a wide range of cultural, creative and sporting activities and excursions. Informal evening activities will develop and improve conversational skills.

Children's Programme (age 3 – 7)In the mornings, children attend 2 hours of formal English lessons, plus a swimming session with instruction for non-swimmers. In the afternoons parents can take their children with them on excursions or, alternatively, their children can join the Moreton Hall Holiday Club for a programme of sports and activities including language-based activities. The Holiday Club welcomes both English and international children.

Children's Programme (age 8 – 13)Children enjoy 2 hours of formal English lessons every morning, followed by a swimming session. Instruction will be given to non-swimmers.

In the afternoons parents can take their children with them on excursions. Alternatively, the children may take part in Moreton Hall’s Holiday Club ‘Workshops’ with British boys and girls, and children of other nationalities. These workshops focus on developing skills such as dance and drama, art and music and a variety of sports including hockey, tennis and football.

Intensive Academic EnglishThis prestigious course is designed to prepare students for the English-speaking academic world. It is aimed at learners who are contemplating taking a degree course in an English-speaking university.

27 hours per week. 22.5 hours of group tuition in English for Academic Purposes, and 4.5 hours of lectures per week on topics such as economics, music, art, literature and global issues. Includes academic writing, reading, listening and speaking. The programme also offers study skills including critical thinking.

Our City Summer Centre in Oxford takes place at Kings’ year-round campus for academic preparation, St. Josephs. Here, students have access to a range of on-site facilities, including a large student cafeteria, an outside patio, and large well-equipped classrooms and resource areas. St. Josephs is located in a quiet residential area of the city but with local amenities including a library, swimming pool, gym and shops all within walking distance. SAFETY AND SECURITY POLICIES

Emergency contact form

This must be completed by all students prior to arrival (available from the downloads section on kingssummer.com). Mobile phone numbers for students and parents are recorded on our student database.

Student cards and wristbands

All students are given a student card and a wristband on arrival (both with an emergency contact number).

Lesson attendance

All students must attend all lessons unless they are ill (in which case they must inform a member of staff immediately.)

Daytime activities

These are compulsory for all courses. Registration is taken for each activity session.

Evening activities

These are compulsory on all courses except the Bournemouth Vacation Extra, and Oxford Intensive Academic where they are optional. We conduct a registration on arrival for fire/safety purposes.

Excursions

à Excursions are compulsory for all courses and registration is taken on each excursion.

à All students are registered and their mobile phone numbers are collected during the excursion journey (if not already registered during their first week). Students are re-counted and re-registered on a regular basis throughout the excursion.

à All students receive an ‘I am lost’ card or information sheet with the emergency number for that excursion.

à Students aged 12 and under must stay with their Group Leader or Kings staff at all times.

à Students aged 13 - 16 must stay in small groups (4 or more students) and in a clearly designated area (such as a main shopping street) during their free time.

à Students aged 17+ will have free time and should return to the designated meeting point at the time agreed with the guide.

à During agreed free time on excursions, the guide will wait at a designated place so that they are easy to see and/or contact.

SIM cards for mobile phones

We strongly recommend that all students buy or pre-order a UK or USA SIM card or a SIM and phone package so that it is as easy as possible for Kings staff to maintain contact with them while they are with us. For further information, please contact [email protected].

Free time and curfews

Residential Summer Centresà Students are not permitted to leave the

Centre without supervision. There is 24-hour supervision within the Centre.

Vacation Extra / Oxford Intensive Academic Coursesà Students who come as part of a group are

the responsibility of the Group Leader when not in lessons. A member of Kings staff is given the role of “group leader” for individuals aged under 16.

à In Bournemouth and Oxford students can go into the town centre unsupervised after lessons and in the evenings/ weekends. In London, students are not permitted to travel into the city without supervision by a member of staff or their Group Leader.

à Students under 16 must return to their homestay or residence by 22:30.

à Students aged 16 or 17 must return by 23.30.

à Students aged under 16 are not given their own house key.

Airport transfers

All students attending Residential Summer Centres, Vacation Extra or Oxford Intensive Academic must book a Kings arrival/ departure transfer unless travelling with a Group Leader or with a responsible adult.

Arrival transferTransfers for students attending Residential Summer Centres, Vacation Extra or Oxford Intensive Academic include a Meet and Greet service on arrival (by the driver or a member of Kings staff). On arrival, students may be required to wait 2 – 3 hours for other students if they have booked an Economy Transfer service.

Departure transferOn departure students travelling with a Group Leader will be dropped at the terminal entrance and the Group Leader will be responsible for check-in. Students travelling without an adult will be checked in by Kings staff or the driver.

Unaccompanied minorsPlease notify us in writing in advance if your child is travelling as an Unaccompanied Minor. A supplement applies to the departure transfers of Unaccompanied Minors in Bournemouth, London and Oxford.

At Kings, student welfare and safety is our top priority. We take our responsibility extremely seriously and have specific policies and procedures in place for all junior students.

à Students aged under 18 have an evening curfew but are otherwise treated as adults and not supervised outside lessons.

à The evening curfew for all students aged under 16 is 22:30.

à The evening curfew for all students aged 16 – 17 is 23.30.
