KING SOLOMON ACADEMY 13 MARCH 2015 PAGE 1 Message from Mr Molver NEWSLETTER Dear Parents/Carers, I hope that all of you are enjoying the sunshine and the mild weather. It seems that spring has certainly sprung, and I for one have thoroughly enjoyed the change in season! This term is absolutely racing by - it is only 3 weeks until we break for the Easter holiday. Please continue to ensure that your children are here everyday, and here on time for school. Every minute is crucial. There have been a number of incidents lately which I know have upset some of our children and parents - most of these incidents are related to children either not wanting to play/engage with one another due to their religious or cultural backgrounds. I've also had parents approach me with con- cerns regarding their children being exposed to topics/matters which may go agains their religious inclinations. I think it's necessary to point out that there has been more than enough coverage in the press recently of the importance of upholding modern British values. While as a school we certain- ly have not as yet completely figured out what these are specifically, we most definitely have spent a lot of time establishing and reinforcing our school values. And so this week I'd like to remind all parents of our commitment (as staff, children and parents) to upholding our REACH values at school. The first of these is Respect, and there are perhaps three things I'd like us to be mindful of with regards to respect. Firstly, please could you remind your children that being respectful means being tolerant and accepting of children from different backgrounds and religions. We are in no position to judge others and nor should we exclude others on any such basis from our play or our friendship groups. Secondly, I'd like to ask parents to respect each other, and to respect the fact that the staff will deal with matters that take place between children. There have been a number of inci- dents recently where parents have taken these matters into their own hands, with unfortunate con- sequences. Finally, I'd like to ask all parents to respect the fact that we are in Britain, that we live in a British culture, and to embrace, as citizens of this great nation, all that it has to offer us. London is an amazing place, and it's so special because it's so diverse. Our children have a unique opportunity, not only to learn from their teachers, but to learn from each other, and from you. Their horizons can be so much broader, their education so much richer, than those of children living in monocultural villages, because they have access to a global education through their interaction with each other. Please, together, can we do everything we can to support and nurture this educa- tion. (Continued on next page)

My final request this week is to all parents dropping their children on the KS2 playground. If you are dropping your children off by car, could you please find a space to park, and escort your chil-dren across the road? There have been far too many angry drivers, and near accidents. It really isn't safe to stop in the middle of the road and let your children jump out and cross unescorted.

Thank you all so much for your ongoing support and cooperation.

Have a wonderful and hopefully very sunny weekend!

Mr Molver.

We are proud to announce the first results from our Music Medal exams this year! More results to follow in the coming weeks.

MUSIC MEDAL RESULTS

Reported By: Leban Awale

On Thursday 5th March, a large amount of the year 6 pupils attended a book launch at the Century Club. McK-insey & CO’s founder, Michael McKinsey, even came to the event! Personally, I struggled to find the place since it was Chinese New Year.

The night consisted of drinks named after pupils stories, live readings from Leban Awale, Abtehaal Sabri, Sarah Ezbakh, Anushka Chaturvedi, Sally Youssef and Khadra Abdirahman . Also, MC on the night was Khalid Dovie. Everybody did a fantastic job reading their work.

EVEN A CHILD CAN BE AN

The super six all looked at each other in dismay. This was certainly not what they expected. "Cheer up guys, don't judge a book by its cover." Lisa said optimistically, trying to light up the mood. They couldn't help it but smile at Lisa. She was the youngest and the cutest out of all of them, yet she was the one who was cheering them up and acting like the responsible one. They all got out of the seven seat hatchback and went outside.

"EEEEWWWWW!" shrieked Louisa. "Whats wrong?" asked Jacob.

"I have stepped into some mud!" replied Louisa. "That is not mud, it is dog waste." Sam said.

"AAAHHHH!" screamed Louisa.

Freddy started shrieking with laughter. Lisa could not help it but have a little giggle. Even Uncle Ed, who was supposed to be the grown up, started laughing. "Right, time to set up the tent." an-nounced Uncle Ed. Uncle Ed walked to a remote, isolated bit of land in the campsite and started setting up the tent. Lisa and Jacob helped.

Meanwhile, Luna and Sam were collecting sticks for the fire. Louisa and Freddy got the supper ready. Once all the jobs were completed, Uncle Ed lit the fire by rubbing to sticks together. He act-ed as if it was easy, but his face went red and he kept panting and puffing.

Once he had finished, he sighed, "There, easy peasy lemon squeezy."

Lisa started laughing. For dinner, they all had beef stew and tomato soup. Then they roasted marshmallows. "More please." begged Freddy.

"Don't be greedy!" Louisa said. Everyone got their sleeping bags and Luna got her blanket and pil-low.

"Wait, time to tell scary stories!" Sam stated.

They all sat around the camp fire, all warm and cosy. Sam went first: Legend says that on Friday the 13th Big Foot comes into the Macmillan campsite and scares everyone. He steals their tents, sleeping bags, suitcases and their food.

"Food, oh no, not the food!" cried Freddy. "SSSHH Freddy!" said Louisa.

He comes at exactly 00:00am (midnight.) If he can smell fear, he chases the children and dogs. Luna gave a tiny whimper. Jacob started shivering and quivering.

Lisa gave a yawn, "I'm tired." "Time for bed kiddies" Uncle Ed said. "Night Night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite!" Uncle Ed joked.

They all went into the tent. Luna, Sam, Lisa and Louisa went in Louisa's medium sized purple tent and Freddy and Jacob went inside Jacob's green small sized tent. Uncle Ed went into his old yet large brown tent. 00:00 (midnight)...

World Book Week has finally come! The class times for the book fair are below.

For the dressing up day, you can dress up as any book character you want and you need to bring in the book that has your char-acter. There will be an award for best dressed from each Key Stage and possibly from each class.

Pupils were asked to design their class’ book corner, a winner will be chosen from each class and one from the whole school. The winning class will be able to create their design in their classroom.

Additionally, there will also be a time for ‘Real Men Read’. This is when a your father or big brother or granddad read a book to the whole class. If you are male and you haven’t signed up yet, please do. Finally, there will be a book wizard or fairy who will pay a visit to each class and give some lucky children a book.
