ANIMAL SHELTER Animals have feelings too! Many animals are abandoned which means left alone. They have no

one to take care of them or feed them and are hungry, sick, cold, wet and alone. These animals are on the streets where they can be hit by cars, injured by other animals or trapped in unsafe places. Animal shelters rescue these animals, nurse them back to health and try to find new homes for them.

1. If you had an animal shelter what kinds of things would you do to take care of the animals?

_____________________________________

2. Draw a picture of your animal shelter.

3. What can you do to help abandoned animals in your community?

_____________________________________

4. Have an animal rescue drive to collect money, food and supplies for your local animal shelter. See if your family can volunteer at your local shelter.

WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES:

Name : _________________________________

Favorite Activity : _________________________

Activity:Sometimes we don’t have empathy for others because we don’t know what it feels like to be them.

Try these role play activities to feel what it is like to “Walk in someone else’s shoes”

1. Have a parent put a cling or towel on your arm as if it were broken. How is it to get dressed? Eat? Brush your teeth? Can you ride your bike? Go swimming? Play basketball?

How does it feel to have a broken arm: ______________________________________________ What can you do to help someone with a broken arm? _________________________________

2. Put on a blindfold for an hour. Can you watch TV? Walk across the house? How hard is it to make your bed? Can you read a book? Go shopping? Make a snack? How does it feel to have a physical challenge? ________________________________________ What can I do when I see someone with a physical challenge? ___________________________

3. Go without breakfast or lunch for a day. How does your stomach feel? Do you have enough energy to play or do your chores? How do you feel when you smell food or see other people eating?

How does it feel to be hungry? ____________________________________________________ What can I do to help people who have no food? _____________________________________
