Ducks in the water?Food Bank Duck

Volunteers with the Kimberley Helping Hands Food Bank will be making one last push this weekend to sell out this year’s East Koote-nay Realty Food Bank Duck Race.
Marilyn Jolie says that as of Thursday, about $13,500 had been raised through ticket
sales, meaning there are still 300 to go. Tickets are $5 and you will see Food Bank volunteers in visible locations around town this weekend.
Jolie is also looking for a few more volun-teers to assist in taking ducks out of the water near the Civic Centre on Saturday.
The big question is will ducks actually be put in the water?
“We are still moni-toring the water situa-
tion,” Jolie said. “We want to put the ducks in, but it is a safety issue. If it’s safe, we’ll do it.”
Whether the ducks hit the water or not, there will still be a fes-tive atmosphere at the annual barbecue at the Civic Centre, where the winning ducks will be announced. The barbe-cue is also a Food Bank fundraiser, so come on down and have some fun.
Wasa Lake situation ‘hopeful’ going into weekend

Wasa Lake rose only one inch overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, good news for resi-dents and RDEK staff dealing with the flood.
That means it’s rising but ris-ing more slowly, giving hope that
things just might be getting better, says the RDEK’s Loree Duczek.
“We believe the lake may be nearing peak,” she said Thursday. “We are very, very hopeful that things may get better over the weekend.”
If that is the case it will be very good news, not just for Wasa resi-dents, but for RDEK staff dealing with a flood crisis that has stretched from one end of the re-gional district to the other.
Duczek said that they have re-ceived some additional staff from
municipalities.“We are very grateful to have
secured additional help,” she said. “The City of Cranbrook has sent people for the weekend and the District of Invermere gave us some staff as well.
“This has been an unprece-dented response in terms of staff.”
Duczek says RDEK manage-ment is very aware of the poten-tial for staff burnout and is trying to make sure they shift out and get some rest.

Ron Stocknow’s Grade 6’s from Highlands Elementary School biked to Wycliffe on June 11 and set up camp for three days and nights. They biked back to Highlands on June 14. Despite some weather challenges, the kids had an amazing experience. It was a wonderful week with many outdoor education activities including a visit from the Conservation Officers with their cougar hound. The kids were responsible for setting up and taking down their own camps and preparing all of their own meals.

Rockies this week an-nounce the appoint-ment of Russell Workun as a new Dean of In-struction.
Workun, who will join the College in Au-gust, will be responsible
for Trades and Appren-ticeships, Timber Frame, Adult Basic Edu-cation, Office Adminis-tration and Fire Train-ing programs.
Coming to Cran-brook from Fairview, Al-berta Workun brings to the College an extensive background in develop-ing and delivering cus-tomized training pro-grams throughout northern Alberta having managed Continuing Education departments for Fairview College, Northern Alberta Insti-tute of Technology in Edmonton and Grande Prairie Regional Col-lege. He has also worked closely with regional in-dustry to facilitate edu-cation and skill develop-ment.
“I am very excited about joining College of the Rockies. I have been reading all I can about the College and am eager for my first day of work to arrive,” Workun said. “I believe my knowledge and experi-ence will be a good fit with the vision at the College.”
A captain with the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department, Workun is a certified Cold Water Rescue trainer and has authored a Hybrid Vehi-
cle Safety for First Re-sponders course. He has also written and de-veloped workshops for Cross Culture Aware-ness, Cultural Diversity in the Workplace and has volunteered his time with Building Envi-ronmental Aboriginal Human Resources through the develop-ment of programming.
“We are pleased to have someone of Rus-sell’s calibre joining our management team. I have no doubt his expe-rience and background will be of great benefit to the College,” said Vice President of Education Doug McLachlan. “We look forward to his con-tributions to our com-munity.”
Workun will be joined in Cranbrook by his wife, Karen. They have three grown chil-dren.

Grizzlies seen on ski hill

Just a cautionary note for those who enjoy hiking the ski hill. Hikers have spotted two grizzlies in that area this week.
Brian Copping, Lift Operations Manager for the Kimberley Alpine Resort confirmed that the bears were seen on Tuesday.
“They were spotted once on the Caper ski run this week,” he said. “I don’t know if they are still there or not. But it is that time of year when bears are around.”
Copping says it is a bit unusual to see grizzlies in that area — black bears are far more common — but it’s not unheard of.
Hikers are reminded to bring their bear spray and perhaps hike in groups rather than alone.
Kimberley, B.C. — What really happens when we throw things ‘away’? Is there even such a place? That’s what Grade 5 students from McKim Middle School discovered this spring, as they scruti-nized the contents of the local transfer station, landfill and recycling depot.
The students are tak-ing part in a Wildsight education program that tackles topics such as waste, ecological foot-print, climate change and energy use—and how to lessen their im-pacts.
“This is not your or-dinary field trip,” said Monica Nissen, Educa-tion Program Manger for Wildsight, the non-profit organization that created and deliv-ers Beyond Recycling.

Council says no to tenures, recreation in watershedCity will support tourism ventures in finding other operating areas

After much discus-sion with the Mark Creek Watershed Advi-sory Committee and among Council itself, a vote has been taken and neither recreation, nor tenures will be support-ed in Kimberley’s water-shed.
The issue has been brewing this spring, as one tourism operation
who runs a snowmobile touring company, had asked for permission to operate in the water-shed. He found an ally in Coun. Darryl Oakley, whose concerns about unregulated recreation activity in the watershed were such that he be-lieved stewardship was required. Oakley argued that a responsible tour-ism operator could pro-vide stewardship and education to other uses, some of whom may not even be aware they were in a watershed.
In the end, Council was not comfortable with allowing commer-cial tenures in the wa-tershed and voted to
send a letter to the Min-istry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources that they do not support recreation in the water-shed.
Council will not sup-port any recreation in the watershed nor will it support any application for tenure.
The major concern is that any activity threat-ens the water source, and could eventually re-sult in the City having to build a treatment plant that could cost upwards of $30 million
The City will also work with Teck and Canfor to deactivate road access at key loca-tions, as it is acknowl-
edged that even with the City not supporting or approving of recreation activity in the water-shed, it is taking place.
This leads to the issue of stewardship that Oakley brought up. The City also voted to support the Mark Creek Watershed Advisory Committee in their ef-forts to provide steward-ship.
Oakley is satisfied with that decision.
“We basically agreed to significantly increase stewardship opportuni-ties in the watershed, maybe with a working group of the committee. How it would look, I don’t know. I want to
see more people on the ground in there.
“There are enough people on the commit-tee who are backcoun-try people that you could get patrols in there.”
The other issue is en-couraging recreation in appropriate areas. The City has a stated goal of supporting a thriving business community. With a decision to not support tenures in the watershed, Council also voted to support recre-ation tenures in other areas. City staff will as-sist these operators in finding suitable front-country areas in which to operate.

very very hard to maintain good staff-ing levels,” she said, adding that the situa-tion is nowhere near over.
“Wasa is still in the active response phase, though we hope things are sta-bilizing. And there is still a lot of support necessary after flood-ing. When things die down, people still need support. You have make sure they have all the informa-tion they need about safe drinking water, clean-up kits, eligi-bility for relief. And they need emotional support too.”
For example RDEK staff in the Hosmer area were at the com-munity hall last night at an open house that was put together to help people affected by the Elk Valley floods. A team was
there to talk to them and provide emo-tional support.
Back in Wasa, the RDEK has requested that people keep their boats off the lake this long week-end.
“The water is liter-ally lapping at the door of some homes and cabins. In other areas, residents have spent hours and hours sandbagging to protect their homes and our concern is that the wake and rough waters caused by boats could not only increase water in the affected homes, but knock down the sandbags that have been so carefully placed. BC Parks has closed the boat launches at the Lake and we are urg-ing property owners and visitors to leave their boats parked this weekend.”

One day in and there is still no sign of a man believed to have crashed into the Bull River east of Cranbrook on Tuesday night.
Cpl. Pat Prefontaine of Cranbrook RCMP said that Wednesday saw a concentra-tion of search and rescue (SAR) on the spot just above the Ab-erfeldie Dam.
“Significant resources were put into play yesterday includ-ing numerous SAR teams from all over the East Kootenay and some from the West Kootenay. Speciality teams included swift water rescue, rope rescue and ground search and rescue. Two SAR helicopters were on scene yesterday as was our police
dog,” said Cpl. Prefontaine.“The vehicle has not been
located and neither has the driver. Some articles from the vehicle have been recovered downstream.”
On Thursday, Cpl. Prefon-taine said there would be fewer search and rescue personnel on scene, because the river is very fast, turbulent and dan-gerous, making the search diffi-cult.
“There isn’t much that can be done other than watching the river for receding water and
reduced turbidity,” he said.Police received a call at
about 10 p.m. On Tuesday, June 25 that a vehicle with a 20-year-old driver had crashed into the Bull River, about 25 ki-lometres up the Bull River For-est Service Road from Fort Steele Wardner Road, between the first and second bridges.
RCMP are not currently re-leasing the identity of the miss-ing driver, but family and friends were at the scene Wednesday assisting with the search.

in the trash.” McKim is one of
eleven schools in the Columbia Basin Region that have taken part in Wildsight’s Beyond Re-cycling this year. Be-
yond Recycling aims to inspire students to con-sider the impact of their actions and to make positive environmental changes. The weekly lessons use slideshows,
costumes, movies, and games to make the learning about these se-rious topics fun. The curriculum is recog-nized by the B.C. Minis-try of Education as con-tributing to science learning outcomes, and so far teachers, parents and kids are giving it great marks.
“The students had a great time on this field trip,” said Patty Kole-snichenko, Beyond Re-cycling educator. “They’ve been so en-gaged and interested about learning about their impact on the en-vironment and learning about ways they can re-duce their ecological footprint. The trip to the Kimberley transfer sta-tion, the regional recy-cling centre and landfill was a real eye-opener.”

On 11 June, the Nicaraguan parliament voted in favour of building a $40 billion canal across the country connecting the Atlantic and
Pacific Oceans. Since the country is dirt poor, the money would have to come from inter-national investors. It would be raised by a Hong Kong-based firm, HKDN Group, which in return would get the right to build and run the canal for 50 years. But nobody outside Nicaragua took the plan very seriously.
On 15 June, Nicaragua’s president, Daniel Ortega, and Wang Jing, the owner of HKDN, signed a contract that gives the Central American nation 51 percent of the company’s shares. Wang said the capital could easily be raised from Chi-nese companies and international banks — but since his only business experience has been in running telecommunica-tions firm Xinwei Telecom, again nobody took much notice.
So on 25 June, Wang went public. Speaking in Beijing, he said that he had already attracted global investors. Work on the canal would start in 2014, and it would be open by 2020. “We don’t want it to become an international joke, and we don’t want it to turn into an example of Chinese investment failures,” he said, adding that returns on the project were “sure to make every investor smile broadly.”
Promoters always talk like that, and there would still not be much reason to take Wang and Ortega seriously if it were not for one fact: Chinese businessmen do not launch projects of this scale with-
out the support of the Chinese govern-ment. The risk of embarrassment is just too high.
Wang denies that he has official sup-port, of course: “I am a very normal Chi-nese citizen. I couldn’t be more normal.”
But if Beijing really is be-hind the project, then it may actually happen. So what would be the impli-cations of a 286-km. (178-mile) waterway connect-ing the Caribbean with the Pacific via Lake Nicara-gua.
For Nicaragua, they would be huge. The Nicaraguan government claims that work on the Great Interoceanic Canal and associated projects — a “dry canal” freight railway, an airport and two du-ty-free zones — could double Nicara-gua’s GDP and triple employment by 2018. In a country that still does not have a proper highway connecting its two coasts, that would change everything.
For Panama, whose existing canal has been the mainstay of the country’s econ-omy for a century, the competition would be very serious. A $5 billion proj-ect to double the Panama Canal’s capac-ity by building a third chain of locks across the isthmus is nearing comple-tion, but it will still be restricted to taking ships of 65,000 tons or less.The rival canal in Nicaragua would be able to ac-commodate the new generation of ships ranging up to 250,000 tons, but there will not be enough shipping to keep both canals in business unless world trade continues to expand rapidly. In any case competition in transit rates would be fierce, and it might well come to pass that neither canal was very profitable.
The biggest question, however, is stra-tegic. The United States built the Pana-ma Canal and ran it for many years. Two-thirds of the cargo that goes through the Canal comes from or is going to US ports, and American warships still have the right to jump the queue of ships waiting to go through.
As a country with coasts on both the Atlantic and the Pacific, the United States sees control of the fastest way between the two oceans as a high strategic priori-ty. Despite the hand-over of the existing canal to the Panamanian government in 1999, at the moment the US still has that control. It would have far less control over a Nicaraguan canal, and will doubt-less do its best to derail the project.
That’s an inevitable strategic reflex, but it is not necessarily the case that a Nicaraguan canal would really lessen the US Navy’s strategic dominance in the re-gion. Nothing is more vulnerable than a canal in wartime, and even in confronta-tions where force is not yet being used canals are easily blockaded. And al-though the Chinese navy no doubt en-thusiastically backs the Nicaraguan proj-ect, it’s hard to see what real strategic advantage it would gain.
The new canal is certainly feasible from an engineering point of view. It may be viable economically, depending on cost factors that have not yet been calcu-lated and on the rate of expansion of world trade. But its fate will probably be decided by the Chinese government’s willingness to back what is, for China, a vanity project.
And that, in turn, will depend on whether China’s economy remains strong enough to afford such an indulgence. At the moment, I wouldn’t bet on it.

Golly, where does the time go? It seems like only a century ago that it was the summer of 1913 here in the Brook, the last full summer before the Great
War, in fact. Cranbrook was 18 years old then. The boom years were over; lumber-ing, mining, real estate and business in general had all settled into a comfortable, if somewhat less rewarding routine. But what of the weather, you ask?
Well, the weather was of little interest to 27-year-old Carl Johnson, the owner of one of only two motorcy-cles in the city and the local agent for Indian motorcycles. He took a new machine to the prairie north of town to see what it could do. As it turns out a motorcycle could do a number of things. It could go very fast. It could hit the raised roadway of the bridge just down the road from Central School (there were a lot of bridges throughout the city in 1913) there-by tossing Carl from the seat and, when Carl attempted to reseat himself and un-fortunately engaged the emergency brake it could stop very, very suddenly, throwing Carl over the handlebars onto his head. He died shortly thereafter, the first local mo-torized casualty in what would become a long list.
Weather was of no real concern to the owners of the Cranbrook Auditorium on Norbury Avenue. The weekly schedule of performers and live theatre pulled decent crowds all summer. The City Band played weekly weather-be-darned concerts all summer on the bandstand near the Gov-ernment building at the east end of Baker Street. Their fund-raising lawn social at the Catholic Church was a success with the band playing a two-and-a-half hour pro-gramme while the crowd enjoyed ice cream and strawberries, boutonnieres from the flower table, a candy booth, a fish pond for youngsters and a bean guessing contest, all amidst bunting and coloured
electric lights. Lawn socials were perhaps even more popular than the cement so-cials of today.
Still, nothing proved as popular as that summer as the Yankee Robinson Three Ring Circus that rolled into town on June 9. Named for founder Fayette Ludovic “Yan-kee” Robinson and founded in 1875, it was
on a rare tour of the Cana-dian west. The posters boasted “300 Circus Art-ists, 101 startling new fea-tures, Texas Bill’s Wild West with the original Deadwood Stage Coach, 100 people in ‘The Hang-ing of a Horse Thief”, Capt. Buck’s Sea Lions, Sioux In-
dians, Cossacks, Mexican bull fighters and the greatest bunch of Bucking Broncos ever exhibited. Will positively exhibit rain or shine.” Certainly the noon street parade was impressive. Led by the a large steam calliope with brass whistles followed by camels, elephants and dazzling equestri-ans in silver and gold, lions and bears in circus wagons, bands, Indians in full war paint, a troupe of Japanese jugglers and grotesque clowns on mules.
The Hanson brickyard a couple miles north of town began production with a crew of 12. The enterprise included three bunk houses, a stable, a cook house and office all painted bright red. Ten drying sheds held 15,000 bricks each, the factory turned out up to 10,000 per day.
The glimmerings of war on the horizon gave rise to the Cranbrook Rifle Associa-tion, guns and ammunition supplied in part by the government. The organization soon attracted 150 members. The Stan-dard Lumber Mill north of town burned down and the St. Eugene Mission School rose up. The new tennis courts opened and the city repaired 22 leaks in the water pipes at a cost of $5101.90.
Whether or not … whoa, hang on … Right, the weather. It was wet and some-what chilly for much of June 100 years ago. The waters rose early in the month causing
fears of road and bridge washouts. There were three remarkable storms
that month. The first, a thunderstorm on June 8, saw lightning strike the MacKay residence in Slaterville, entering the house via the telephone wires. It tore down pic-tures, took a corner off the piano and flat-tened a partition next to the dining room where the family was seated. No one was injured. Mr. Leek’s house next door was also struck, throwing him from the lounge upon which he was sitting and setting it ablaze. He escaped unscathed.
The second storm on June 19 was much worse. Rain flooded a number of business-es in the lower part of town. Several small-er houses were uprooted by winds of up to 100 mph, small buildings overturned, trees downed and chimneys destroyed. The Powell cleaning shop roof was ripped away as was a section of the Cosmopolitan Hotel roof. Windows from the Wentworth Hotel fell into the street. No one was injured.
A severe thunderstorm the following month centred on 9th Avenue including a lightning strike that blew through the sec-ond-story roof of the Niblock & Barker store, passed to the ground floor and tore a large hole near the front door upon exiting, barely missing Mrs. Niblock and her young son. Local barber Kilby was struck at the back door of his shop. Though dazed for several minutes he was otherwise unhurt.
The ensuing summer turned hot and dry bringing both fears of forest fires and warm, sunny days — the same sun that is now setting on the fifth season of Janus, by the way.

The Kootenay Ice raided Sherwood Park for the second time on Thursday, hiring Jay Henderson to serve as an assistant to head coach Ryan McGill.
Henderson, who hails from the same city as his boss, has signed a two-year con-tract and is eager to get to work with the club.
“It didn’t take a lot of deliberating,” Hen-derson said. “Me and my wife talked it over and it’s a heck of an opportunity for myself and my family, so I’m excited about it.”
Henderson, like his predecessor Chad Klet-zel, has ties to the Koo-tenay franchise, suiting up for the Edmonton Ice from 1996-1998, when McGill was coaching his first ten-ure. Following his four-
year career in major-ju-nior hockey, Hender-son graduated to the AHL, winning three Calder Cup titles, each with a different team.
While playing pro, Henderson and McGill reunited in the AHL when the Ice head coach moved up to lead the bench of the Hartford Wolf Pack after winning the Me-morial Cup in 2002.
“It’s nice having that familiarity with both Jeff and Ryan and being somewhat of an alumni way back in the day be-fore moving to Cran-brook,” continued Henderson. “I’ve been following them all along, even when I was playing pro, keeping tabs, and they’ve been fairly successful, so to me, it’s a great oppor-tunity to join an orga-nization like that.”
Henderson was
picked in the ninth round of the 1997 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins and and en-joyed a six-year career in the AHL before mov-ing over to professional leagues in Germany, Austria and England.
He also got a taste of the show, playing in 33 games with the Bruins over three years.
He was the captain for Boston’s farm team in 2004/05 and was nominated as the Man of the Year by his team three times over his AHL career, which rec-
ognizes community service.
After retiring, he stepped into coaching and has been an assis-tant coach with the Northern Alberta Insti-tute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks, where he helped mentor Ice graduate Steele Boom-er for a season.
During his tenure with NAIT, Henderson also worked with Hock-ey Alberta as a head coach for the Alberta Cup and as an instruc-tor with Team Pacific.
Ice GM Jeff Chynoweth said he and McGill were impressed at a few things on Hen-derson’s resume.
“Jay’s a former play-er, he did play profes-sional hockey, he won three Calder Cup championships, he’s been a leader through-out his career, and he’s been involved in the
coaching business the last couple of years giv-ing back to the game,” Chynoweth said.
“I think, from our end, he fit the criteria.”
Chynoweth remem-bers Henderson as an exciting player who would bring people out of their seats when he skated with the Ice, and adds that his en-thusiasm will build a rapport with the play-ers.
McGill said he no-ticed the same thing during the interview process.
“One of the biggest things, is he’s got the personality that the kids will really, really enjoy him,” said Mc-Gill.
Henderson, 34, and his wife, Megan, are parents to two young children; daughter Mila (5) and son Sea-mus (3).

Ice alum joins Red Deer Rebels

A Kootenay Ice alum-ni has joined the Red Deer Rebels’ staff, as the club announced on Wednesday that Taylor Dakers will serve as the goaltending coach.
Dakers has recently served in the same ca-pacity with the Everett Silvertips and works full time with World Pro Goaltending in Calgary.
Dakers played four seasons with the Koote-nay Ice from 2003-2007 and was a fifth round pick of the San Jose Sharks in the 2005 NHL Draft.
“I’m very excited to be part of the Red Deer Rebels’ organization,” said Dakers. “There is a
very strong tradition of producing great teams and great players. Being able to work alongside professionals like Brent Sutter, Jeff Truitt and Steve O’Rourke is an honour and I look for-ward to helping develop the best players we pos-sibly can.”
Dakers will work with the Rebels roster goaltenders as well as prospects on the pro-tected list and assist scouting staff in the evaluation of talent for the WHL bantam draft.
“We’re very pleased to add Taylor to our coaching staff,” said Rebels president Brent Sutter. “Taylor has coached goaltenders and he brings that coaching experience. Also, we were looking for someone that had played at a high level, he’s played in our league and professionally, so he brings that knowl-edge of the position too. We look forward to add-ing him to our coaching staff.”

The Cranbrook Minor Lacrosse Associ-ation is wrapping up their season with the Chris Watson Memori-al Tournament at the Memorial Arena and Western Financial Place this weekend.
Lacrosse action will take over both facilities as 16 teams over vary-ing age di-v i s i o n s f r o m a r o u n d B.C. and Alberta go head to head.
G a m e s begin at 11 a.m on Friday in both facilities, running right through on Saturday, and wrapping up with playoffs on Sunday.
There will be a break in the event on Satur-day at 3 p.m. in the af-ternoon, as all teams gather on the floor at Western Financial Place for a ceremony
honouring Chris Wat-son.
“We do a little cere-mony, we award the Chris Watson Fair Play award,” said Outlaws president Tammy Tait. “Each team selects someone who shows all the good attributes of a good sportsman.”
After the ceremony, kids will put their indi-vidual skills to the test
in a trick stick compe-tition before getting back into games.
The Out-laws are also hosting a public pan-cake break-
fast by donation on Sat-urday morning from 7-10 a.m. at the upstairs viewing area in the Me-morial Arena.

Anthony Bennett made Canadian basket-ball history Thursday, becoming the first play-er from north of the border to be selected first overall in the NBA draft.
The Cleveland Cava-liers stunned the league by selecting the UNLV freshman forward, who has starred for Canada’s junior national team and was the Mountain West Conference player of the year.
“I’m just as sur-prised as everybody else,” Bennett said mo-ments after he strode across the stage in his scarlet and grey suit - UNLV colours. “I didn’t really have any idea who’s going No. 1 or who was going No. 2. I heard everything was up for grabs. But I’m just real happy, glad that I have this oppor-tunity, and I just got to thank God for every-thing.”
Tristan Thompson of Brampton was se-lected No. 4 by the Cav-aliers in the 2011 draft, making him the highest Canadian draft pick be-fore Thursday. Teen
phenom Andrew Wig-gins of Thornhill, Ont., who’ll play for Kansas next season, is project-ed to go first overall in the 2014 draft.
“Yeah. It’s just crazy. Made history. I can’t re-ally complain about that,” said Bennett, who had between 25 and 30 family members with him in New York - he lost count. “It’s just like a long time dream that I had since I first started playing basketball, even though it was six or seven years ago. It’s just crazy. Next year with Wiggins, hopefully he does well at Kansas. I’m rooting for him. I’m pretty sure he’ll get that No. 1 spot.”

There was suspense right until the end, ei-ther because the Cavs were unsure who they wanted or were trying to trade the pick. Most predictions had them taking one of the big men Nerlens Noel and Alex Len.
Orlando passed on both of them, too, going with Indiana swingman Victor Oladipo with the No. 2 pick. Washington took Otto Porter Jr. of
Georgetown with the third pick.
Bennett has been sidelined since having rotator cuff surgery in May, and didn’t partici-pate in the draft com-bine or any pre-draft workouts. The 20-year-old clearly impressed in his interviews - he in-terviewed for the top five teams in the draft - and his play in college last season.
Bennett had surgery a few weeks after the Runnin’ Rebels were upset in the second
round of March Mad-ness in a 64-61 loss to California, but said Wednesday he wasn’t concerned the injury would hurt his chances in the draft. He was bang on.
Ten years after the Cavaliers selected LeB-ron James to start a draft that would include his future NBA champi-onship teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in the top five, this one lacked the star power and perhaps the promise of stardom.

BOSTON - The names that Boston Celt-ics general manager Danny Ainge didn’t mention said all anyone needed to know about how he views the team’s future.
After trading up three spots to get Gonzaga 7-footer Kelly Olynyk in the NBA draft on Thurs-day night, Ainge de-scribed him as a comple-mentary player who will fit in well with Rajon Rondo, Avery Johnson
and Jeff Green.No mention of the
team’s biggest stars, Paul Pierce and Kevin Gar-nett.
“Can’t talk about it,” Ainge said when the omission was pointed out to him. But asked if there were any untrade-able players on the ros-ter, he said, “If Wilt Chamberlain and Ka-reem Abdul-Jabbar were traded, I guess every-body’s tradable.”
According to a person with knowledge of the talks, the Celtics and
Nets were nearing com-pletion of a deal that would send Garnett and Pierce to Brooklyn along with Jason Terry in ex-change for a package that included three first-round draft picks and three players. LONDON - What a stark statistic for the na-tion of Bill Tilden and Don Budge, John McEn-roe and Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi: It’s been 101 years since no men from the United States reached Wimbledon’s third round.
And the last time it happened, way back in 1912, no Americans even entered the oldest Grand Slam tourna-ment.
By the end of Thurs-day, all 11 U.S. men in the 2013 field at the All England Club were gone, with top-seeded Novak Djokovic ac-counting for the last one by beating 156th-ranked qualifier Bobby Reyn-olds 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-1. Earlier in the day, for-mer top-five player James Blake lost to Ber-nard Tomic of Australia 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, while qual-ifier Denis Kudla was beaten by Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-1, 7-6 (4), 7-5.
That trio joined 18th-seeded John Isner, 21st-seeded Sam Quer-rey, Ryan Harrison, Steve Johnson, Alex Kuznetsov, Wayne Odesnik, Rajeev Ram and Michael Russell on the way home.
“It’s a tough stat to hear, but I still believe, right now, where U.S. tennis is, not too many guys are in their prime. That’s why the numbers are like that. But a lot of guys are, maybe, in the tail end of their careers and a lot of guys are coming up,” said Kudla, a 20-year-old from Ar-lington, Va., who is ranked 105th. “Maybe next year, or the year after that, things could change. You have to go through a little bit of a struggle to get some success.”
Led by top-seeded and defending champi-on Serena Williams, the U.S. women still are rep-resented in singles at Wimbledon this year.
Williams extended her winning streak to 33

“It was a bit strange to see so many top play-ers either lost or retired,” Djokovic said. “But grass is a very special surface. It requires a dif-ferent kind of move-ment. ... If grass at the start of Wimbledon is still not so used and, I guess, a little bit slip-pery, it can be danger-ous, until you really get your right footing on the court. That’s probably the reason why they all felt uncomfortable and they all injured them-selves, unfortunately.”

Canucks will attempt to trade Luongo as NHL draft approaches

VANCOUVER - Now that new coach John Tortorella has been hired, Vancouver Canucks gener-al manager Mike Gillis can try to complete a long-delayed project in conjunction with Sunday’s NHL draft - trading goaltender Roberto Luongo.
“We’re going to try and ac-complish that goal,” Gillis said this week. “We’ll see what hap-pens.”
If other teams do not find the nine years remaining on Luongo’s US$64-million contract onerous, his trade could help the Canucks acquire a veteran or some young talent in the form of prospects or draft picks. But Gillis will not be dealing from a position of strength.
Although Luongo’s contract has a reasonable annual sala-ry-cap hit of $5.3 million, clubs have to reduce their cap maxi-mum to $64.3 million from about $70 million as part of the new collective bargaining agreement. The Canucks will also be missing a key bargaining chip if they want to move Luongo, who must agree to waive his no-trade clause.
“I think it’s a strong draft,” said Gillis. “I think there’s opportuni-ty, but we don’t have a sec-ond-round pick, because we traded it at the trade deadline to try and get stronger for the play-offs. That’s a practice that I don’t like, and I haven’t liked, and I’m
not sure what we can do with that.”
The Canucks sent their sec-ond-round pick to the Dallas Stars for centre Derek Roy and minor-league defenceman Kevin Connauton. Roy produced just one point in the playoffs as the Canucks were swept in the first round by the San Jose Sharks.
NHL clubs head into this year’s draft with significant change looming when the 2013-14 season begins. In addition to salary-cap challenges, teams must deal with the implications of realignment and tougher bat-tles for prime playoff positions.
Gillis expects the challenges and changes to spur trades.
“There’s going to be a lot more moving parts now in the draft with compliance buyouts, a lower cap number, teams that are in a very narrow bend and want to improve - and want to improve immediately,” he said. “There’s a lot of different synergies going into this draft, I think, than in past years.”
Under the new collective bar-gaining agreement that ended the NHL lockout, each team can buy
out two players this season and next season to reduce salaries in compliance with the cap. Bought-out contracts do not count against the salary cap, but timing is be-coming critical. The current buy-out window closes July 4, a day before free agency opens.
But a buyout is not necessarily the best option for Luongo, be-cause the Canucks would get nothing for an elite goaltender who should still be in demand, although perhaps less than in the past. Also, the Canucks have two other prime buyout candidates - high-priced defenceman Keith Ballard ($4.2 million annually) and winger David Booth ($4.25 million.)
The Canucks have the 24th overall pick in the first round and are slated to pick 85th, 115th, 145th, 175th and 205th in the third through seventh rounds. Gillis could be seeking to parlay some picks into immediate help as he and Tortorella believe that the club is close to contending for the Stanley Cup again after reach-ing the finals in 2010-11.
But the Canucks have a short-age of young NHL players who are usually in demand at this time of year as struggling teams at-tempt to rebuild and contenders try to obtain talent necessary for a Cup run. And, due to previous drafts that have not paid off, the Canucks have a shortage of mi-nor-leaguers who are NHL-ready and would appeal to other clubs.

Professional lacrosse franchise relocates to Vancouver

National Lacrosse League added a fourth Canadian franchise on Thursday by giving unanimous approval to a plan for the Washing-ton Stealth to relocate to the Vancouver area.
The Vancouver Stealth will play at the Langley Events Centre starting in the 2014 NLL season, the league said in a statement.
The Stealth, previ-ously based in Everett,
Was., have been one of the most successful franchises in the nine-team league over the past five years. The team reached the final in three of the last four sea-sons and won the cham-pionship in 2010.
“The Stealth will rep-resent and draw from all over the Metro Vancou-ver area and beyond,” said Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “The township of Langley is extremely proud to have the Stealth and the NLL call
the LEC home.“We welcome our

Here are ICBC’s tips for drivers:It’s all mixed up: Dur-ing the last few days of school, kids may be arriving or leav-ing school at varying times throughout the day. When school is in session, a 30-km/h school zone speed lim-it is in effect between 8 am and 5 pm. During the summer months, speed limits in school zones are only in effect if summer school is in session, but kids often still play around these areas, so drive cau-tiously at all times.
Kids all around: Drivers aren’t used to seeing crowded playgrounds and parks during the day but this all changes as we welcome summer. Remember that play-ground speed limits remain in effect year-round. When driving around playgrounds and parks, observe carefully. Small chil-dren are less predict-
able and harder to see than adults.
Watch for clues: In residential areas, a hockey net or ball can mean that kids are playing nearby. Remember that a child could dash into the street at any moment. Pay attention and always anticipate the unexpected.
Here are ICBC’s pedestrian safety tips for parents to share with their children:Be a role model: Par-ents are the number one role models for their children so make sure you set a good ex-ample when teaching them about pedestrian safety. If your child sees you jaywalking, they will think it is okay to do and will do the same thing. Make sure you teach your child to cross at intersections that have a pedestrian cross-ing light or a marked crosswalk whenever possible.
Make it fun: Make your road safety teaching fun while still treating it as a serious issue. For younger children, try an interactive game by having them point out all the traffic signs they see and ask if they know what they mean. For older children, remind them to put away their phones and remove their head-
phones when crossing the road.
Focus on the basics: Kids will digest infor-mation about serious issues when it’s kept simple and relevant. Therefore, begin your pedestrian safety les-sons with the key ba-sics that you learned as a kid, which are still relevant today. A great example is how to cross at intersections:
Stop: Before cross-ing, always stop at the curb. Make sure all vehicles have stopped.
Look: Look left and right for oncom-ing vehicles. Then look again over your shoulders for vehicles that might be turn-ing. Teach your kids to keep looking for approaching vehicles as they cross.
Listen: Listen for ap-proaching traffic that you can’t yet see.
Make eye contact: Even if the walk signal is on, teach your children to make eye contact with drivers before they cross.
Walk: Teach your kids to walk, never run, when crossing a road.
Mark out safe areas: Focus on teaching your kids where to safely position them-selves when they are around roads. Chil-dren should always walk on the inside edge of a sidewalk where they are less exposed to traffic. If there isn’t a sidewalk, teach your kids to walk facing oncoming traffic so they can see approaching vehicles and make eye contact with drivers. Children should avoid short-cuts through parking lots where drivers can often be distracted by more complex ma-neuvers.

SPOKANE, Wash. — State reg-ulators have released two studies that confirm heavy metals pollu-tion along undeveloped regions of Lake Roosevelt near the Cana-dian border.
The studies released this week by the Washington Department of Ecology found elevated levels of heavy metals in surface soils, wet-lands and lake sediments in un-developed areas near the town of Northport.
The metals originated from past operations of a huge smelter near the border in Trail, British Columbia.
“What’s significant is we have far more information than before on metals in undeveloped, forest-ed land,’’ said Brook Beeler, a spokeswoman for Ecology in Spo-kane, on Thursday.
Lake Roosevelt is the 150-mile reservoir behind Grand Coulee Dam.
One study evaluated surface soils in timberland within two miles of the U.S.-Canadian border in the fall of 2012. More than 120 soil samples were tested for vari-ous metals, including lead, arse-nic, zinc, cadmium, mercury and
others. The second study looked at metals concentrations in sedi-ments at 10 lakes and wetlands.
The studies confirmed elevat-ed levels of metals and also con-cluded the metals came mostly from past smelter emissions in Trail, Ecology said.
People living or recreating in the Northport area should take some extra precautions, such as washing toys and clothing after playing on soil; washing hands and face after working or playing outside; and mopping, dusting and vacuuming often, Ecology said.
Efforts to clean up Lake Roos-evelt from smelter pollution have been in the works for years.
A federal judge last year ruled that his court has jurisdiction to apply the U.S. Superfund law to the Canadian company that ac-knowledges polluting Lake Roos-evelt.
U.S. District Judge Lonny Suko, of Yakima, ruled against Teck Met-als Ltd. in a case involving pollu-tion of the lake in northeastern Washington. Cleanup has been estimated to cost up to $1 billion.
Teck has acknowledged that pollution from the Trail smelter
travelled down the Columbia River into Lake Roosevelt be-tween 1896 and 1995. But it has said that as a company operating in Canada, it is not subject to U.S. environmental laws and cannot be ordered to pay for cleanup.
Much of the pollution is a fine black sand known as slag that washed downstream onto beach-es at the lake where people camp and swim.
The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation peti-tioned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency a decade ago to assess contamination in the reservoir. In 2003, the EPA decid-ed Teck was subject to the U.S. Superfund law, demanded the company pay for studies to deter-mine the extent of the pollution, and clean it up.
Teck objected and the tribes sued in 2004 to force the company to comply. The state then joined the case.
However, Teck did agree in 2006 to perform a major study of pollution in the lake, under the direction of the EPA. The compa-ny has spent more than $55 mil-lion on the study, scheduled for completion in 2015.

NEW YORK — In the chaotic days after Su-perstorm Sandy, an army of aid workers streamed onto the flood-ravaged Rocka-way Peninsula looking for anyone who needed help. Health workers and National Guard troops went door to door. City inspectors checked thousands of dwellings for damage. Seaside neighbour-hoods teemed with util-ity crews, Red Cross trucks and crews clear-ing debris.
Yet, even as the months dragged by, no-body thought to look inside the tiny construc-tion trailer rusting away in a junk-filled lot at the corner of Beach 40th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
If they had, they would have found the body of Keith Lancaster, a quiet handyman who appeared to have been using the trailer as a home the night Sandy sent 5 feet (1.5 metres) of water churning through the neighbour-hood.
It took until April 5 before an acquaintance finally went to check on the 62-year-old’s where-abouts and found his partially skeletonized remains. His body lay near a calendar that hadn’t been turned since October and pre-scription pill bottles last refilled in the fall.
New York City’s medical examiner an-nounced this week that Lancaster had drowned, making him the 44th person ruled to have died in New York City because of the storm.
Neighbourhood resi-dents described Lan-caster as a loner and something of a drifter, and police said he had never been reported missing. No one stepped forward to claim his body from the city morgue, either, after he was finally discov-ered this spring. He was buried in a potter’s field on an island in Long Is-land Sound, the medi-cal examiner’s office said. A police miss-ing-person squad is still trying to identify any relatives.
But in life, he was well liked by some of the people who saw him sweeping sidewalks
around the vacant lot where he sometimes slept.
“When we first moved here, he weeded our entire backyard,’’ said Gerald Sylvester, 55, a retired transit worker who lives in a small bungalow just feet from the trailer where Lancaster died.
Sylvester and his wife, Carrie Vaughan, 60, said Lancaster also mended their fence and once fixed an outdoor light at their house — but he always refused any money for his help. He wouldn’t take any food, either, when they offered, and politely de-clined their invitations to come inside, explain-ing he didn’t like to go into people’s houses.
“He didn’t talk a lot, but if he knew you, you could have a decent conversation,’’ said Vaughan. “He was very nice. A gentleman at all times.’’
She said it wasn’t en-tirely clear where he was living. Lancaster, who the family said looked slightly frail, told her he didn’t want to settle in one place.
As the storm ap-proached and the neighbourhood evacu-ated, Sylvester said he went looking for Lan-
caster to see if he want-ed to leave with the fam-ily, but never found him.
After the Oct. 29 storm, many neigh-bourhood residents were unable to return to their homes. Even today, some buildings remain empty or under repair. Vaughan and Syl-vester were away for two months, living in a FE-MA-funded apartment, before they came back.
The lot where Lan-caster’s trailer sat has been vacant for many years and, at just 15 feet (4.57 metres) wide, is easy to miss.
The company that owns the plot, the Mas-ter Sheet Co., hasn’t paid any property taxes on the parcel for years, according to city re-cords.
New York City’s Of-fice of Emergency Man-agement spokesman Christopher Miller said that search and rescue teams searched 30,000 homes in areas hit by the storm, but hadn’t entered the trailer.
“As nobody had re-ported the deceased missing and we had no reason to believe that someone had been (ille-gally) residing in the trailer, we did not seek access to the structure,’’ he said in an email.

Dear Annie: I’ve been trying to write a novel for a year. The problem is, I have no support from my family. My wife and friends always groan when I ask them to read what I’ve written. I’m trying to be considerate of their level of interest and don’t want them to be annoyed with me, but I need some feed-back on my writing.
That being said, would you know where I could send my pages for review? I’d like to know if my story is interesting the way I’m writing it, or if I need to develop it better. -- Amateur Author in El Paso, Texas
Dear Author: There are various ways to get your written material in front of an au-dience. You can ask writing teachers to look at it. You can search for a writers workshop or try meetup.com for a writing group that critiques members’ work. You can self-pub-lish (you are responsible for all costs), put it in a blog or on an Internet site for free (you will get myriad comments, many worthless, and you’d better have a thick skin), enter a writing contest, or submit a short version to a magazine. You also can go to the nearest li-brary and find a listing of literary agents. An agent will help get your book into the hands of a reputable publisher or reviewer. Getting published is not easy, but if you have talent and skill, it is possible.
Dear Annie: Our daughter was asked to be the maid of honor at her friend’s wed-ding. She was very excited about it. We planned a small shower for her closest friends and family. Now the bride and her mother have given us a list of 78 women to invite. I checked the etiquette book and found no encouragement for such a large event. The 78 women are also invited to the wedding reception.
We simply cannot afford such a large shower, and the bride’s parents know it. I do not understand how they could expect us to handle such a large event. Our daughter doesn’t want to lose the bride’s friendship. Should she bow out of the wedding? -- Anx-ious Parent
Dear Anxious: No bride should demand such extravagant favors. Your daughter should tell her that she cannot manage such a large affair and ask that the guest list be trimmed to 30 women or however many she can afford to host. Your daughter could also ask the other bridesmaids to host this show-er with her, providing more resources and perhaps accommodating a larger guest list.
If the other bridesmaids are not inter-ested or if the bride insists on 78 women, your daughter should offer to bow out of the wedding party. We hope the bride will then understand how unreasonable she is being and back off.
Dear Annie: Your answer to “Parents at Wits’ End,” whose bipolar son would not take his meds, exemplifies the dilemma posed by mental illness in this country, namely that without the patient’s cooperation matters may quickly grow hopeless.
My wife had severe bipolar disorder. It was only luck that kept her aggressive driv-ing from killing all of us and enabled her to keep her job. A friend urged me to leave with my children, but I knew my kids would be devastated, and I worried that my wife would kill herself.
My wife saw a doctor who prescribed an antidepressant, but she did not want a mood stabilizer. The antidepressant by it-self sent her spiraling, as she knew it would. The doctor’s nurse later told me, “We knew something was wrong, but she wouldn’t talk about it when she came in.” Less than a year later, my wife committed suicide, breaking all of our hearts.
If a bipolar person cannot cooperate, the family can do nothing but pray. -- Wiser in Tennessee

Lots of people claim to follow Jesus, and then they do
stuff like what is on this list. Sure, we do these things all the time, be-cause we’re fallible human beings. The point is that you can’t deliberately do these things if you claim to fol-low Jesus’ example. Also, let me be clear that this is not a complete list, but it’s not a bad place to start.
10) Exclude people because they practice another religion.
Jesus was constantly including people, and he did it with a radical dis-regard for their religion. Jesus spoke with and broke bread with every-one, no questions asked. In fact, he was accused of being a glutton and of breaking the law be-cause of his practice.
9) Exclude people for what they look like, how they were born, or things beyond their control.
I may have men-tioned this already but Jesus was constantly in-cluding people. Jesus had this rebel streak in him that actually sought out folks who didn’t “fit in.” People who were dif-ferent, people who were marginalized, people whom others excluded, people who were made to feel unwanted in one way or another held a special place in the heart, life and actions of Jesus. I suspect he did it because he understood they weren’t actually dif-ferent at all. They were precious human beings.
8) Withhold caring from people.
Did you ever play the game “Follow the Lead-er?” If you don’t do what the leader does, you are out. Following means you should imitate as closely as possible. When people who were sick needed care, Jesus gave it to them. If we are following Jesus, we will imitate him as closely as possible. We will take care of everyone. Every-one.
7) Exclude people.Last time. I promise.
Jesus was constantly in-cluding people. It’s a lit-tle concept called love. He was pretty big on it.
6) Let people go hun-gry.
When Jesus said “Feed my sheep,” he wasn’t talking about just
spiritual feeding. If Gandhi was right (and I suspect he was), you can’t have one without the other: “There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread.” There isn’t a food shortage in the world. There is enough for everyone. There isn’t a problem with a distribution sys-tem capable of handling it; I can eat lobster from Nova Scotia while look-ing at the Rockies. The problem is that we aren’t very good at sharing.
5) Make money more important than God and God’s people.
The love of money re-ally is the root of all sorts of evil. We make choices about what we will do with our money every day. Our choices speak louder than our words. Willingly or not, our choices frequently hurt the least of these and others rather than help them. Sometimes, we even hurt ourselves. Be-cause money is so im-portant, we will shop at stores because their prices are cheaper even though we know their products are made in sweat shapes and en-danger the lives of those who make them. We buy mass–produced food be-cause it’s cheaper than buying from the farmer down the road. We’d rather keep more of our money than pay the taxes it takes to provide for those in need. We have a money problem.
4) Judge others.“That ‘speck of saw-
dust in your brother’s
eye’ and ‘let the one who is without sin cast the first stone’ stuff? I meant it. Signed, Jesus.”
3) Be physically ag-gressive or violent.
Jesus’ message and life showed us that we are to avoid violent be-havior. “Put your sword away, (insert your name here).” Use non–violent ways to seek justice. Be creative in your protests. See how Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi did this, to name just a cou-ple of folks who got it.
2) Use the church to hurt people.
If there was anything that could tick Jesus off, it was when institutions used their power and practice to hurt or ex-clude people. Notice, for example, the incident of the money changers in the Temple. It was sup-posed to be a place of love and worship. So while it is true that Jesus became physically ag-gressive there (throwing over the tables and booths), it’s important to note that even then, he didn’t attack people. Just threw some stuff around.
1) Hate.The one possible ex-
ception might be “hate” itself but even then hate breeds hate — so it’s best to avoid hating altogeth-er. I have to admit I have problem tolerating peo-ple who are intolerant. But I am learning in my journey not to do it.
It’s a process of grow-ing in love. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

WASHINGTON — The dra-matic Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage is forcing Repub-lican leaders to cope, in bright daylight, with something they’d rather handle discreetly: the careful balance between pla-cating their conservative base and reaching out to centrist voters crucial in presidential elections.
Top GOP leaders showed notable restraint this week, while conservative activists ful-minated against the court’s de-cision, which requires the fed-eral government to recognize same-sex marriage.
It’s a delicate political dance that establishment Republi-cans perform whenever divi-sive social issues gain new prominence. Republicans are unified and confident in their anti-tax, small-government principles. But nonfinancial is-sues cause more problems.
Republicans are struggling to keep pace with rapidly increas-ing public acceptance of gay rights. They’re also embroiled in intraparty debates over illegal immigration. And a third sensi-tive issue charged back into prominence this month when House Republicans voted to sharply restrict abortion rights. A similar bill triggered a mid-night standoff this week in the Texas legislature.
All these issues pose major challenges to Republican lead-ers in Washington if not else-where. Conservative activists, who form the party’s backbone, care passionately about these matters, and they will give Re-publican candidates only so much leeway before rebelling. Many House Republicans, in particular, cater to such voters, hoping to avoid a GOP primary challenge from the right.
But up-for-grabs centrist voters hold more moderate views on these issues. Their drift towards Democrats in re-cent years is a key reason why Republicans lost the popular vote in five of the last six presi-

the Defence of Marriage Act already is stirring new debates over gay rights in the states, with unpredictable effects on state and federal elections. Thirty-seven states still bar same-sex marriage, including presidential battlegrounds Ohio, Florida and Virginia. If activists try to legalize gay mar-riage in these states, it might fire up conservatives and help GOP candidates in next year’s midterm elections. But it also might drive a further wedge between Republican presiden-tial hopefuls and unaligned voters in 2016 and beyond.
“In less than a decade, op-position to gay marriage has transformed from a marginal political winner for Republi-cans to a liability with swing voters,’’ said GOP consultant John Ullyot.
National Republican lead-ers carefully calibrated their responses this week to the Su-preme Court’s ruling. House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement: “While I am obvi-ously disappointed in the rul-ing, it is always critical that we protect our system of checks
and balances.’’ He said he hopes states “will define mar-riage as the union between one man and one woman.’’
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell issued no statement at all. His aides, when asked, said McConnell “supports traditional mar-riage.’’
Boehner said he has no plans to deal with a proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, and it would have no chance anyway in the Senate.
The Democratic National Committee chortled that “some Republican leaders are conspicuously missing in ac-tion.’’
The GOP’s most conserva-tive lawmakers, meanwhile, blasted away.
“Marriage was debased today,’’ said Rep. Doug LaMalfa of California. Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana said it was “a sad day when the same court that upheld Obamacare decides to reverse course on thousands of years of tradition and a strong bipartisan coalition in Con-gress.’’

A party-commis-sioned report said Republicans must embrace “comprehen-sive immigration reform’’ to improve their damaged rela-tionship with Hispanic voters. Many House Republicans reject the advice.
“The biggest mistake we can make as a party is to pan-der to the Hispanic communi-ty,’’ said Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho. The top priority is to se-cure the U.S.-Mexico border, he said, adding: “the American people are with the Republi-cans on this.’’
Such discussions unsettle Republican presidential cam-paign strategists. Blatantly ca-tering to centrist voters in 2016 could antagonize loyal conser-vatives who have funded and supported the party for years. But standing pat on immigra-tion, gay marriage and other issues could perpetuate, or worsen, the political dynamics that lifted Obama to consecu-tive wins.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — NASA on Thurs-day was poised to launch a sat-ellite to observe a little-under-stood region just above the sur-face of the sun.
Unlike a traditional liftoff, the Iris satellite was to cruise into Earth orbit on a Pegasus rocket dropped from an air-plane after taking off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on California’s central coast.
The launch was to sched-uled to occur at approximately 7:27 p.m. About 100 miles (160 kilometres) off the coast and at
an altitude of 39,000 feet (11,880 metres), the rocket was to be released and ignite its engine for the climb to space. If all goes as planned, Iris will be boosted into orbit 400 miles (640 kilo-metres) above the Earth, unfurl its solar panels and begin its two-year mission after a check-out period.
Previous sun-observing spacecraft have yielded a wealth of information about our near-est star and beamed back bril-liant pictures of solar flares.
Iris carries an ultraviolet telescope that can take high-resolution images every few
seconds. Its focus is on a little-explored region of the sun that lies between the surface and the corona, the glowing white ring that’s visible during eclipses. The goal is to learn more about how this mysterious region drives solar wind and to better predict space weather that can disrupt communications sig-nals on Earth.
The mission is cheap by NASA standards, costing only $182 million, and is managed by the space agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
Once in orbit, engineers will spend a month making sure Iris
is in perfect health before pow-ering on the telescope to begin observations.
The launch was delayed by a day so that technicians at the Air Force base could restore power to launch range equip-ment after a weekend outage cut electricity to a swath of the central coast.
The Pegasus, from Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Vir-ginia, is a winged rocket de-signed for launching small sat-ellites. First flown in 1990, Pega-sus rockets have also been used to accelerate vehicles in hyper-sonic flight programs.

VICTORIA – Govern-ment revenues have fallen $900 million short of February’s budget projections, and teach-ers and other govern-ment workers can ex-pect no new money for wages, Finance Minister Mike de Jong said Thursday.
Bright spots for the B.C. economy include an expected recovery in natural gas prices from historic lows, and $500 million in savings on government operations, de Jong said in a post-election budget update.
B.C. is continuing an effective freeze on pub-lic sector wage growth that began in 2010. Since the government’s “cooperative gains” mandate in 2012, nearly three quarters of union members have signed contracts with average pay increases of one to two per cent, financed through savings in other areas of operations. Most are two-year deals, with some halfway through.
The projected sur-plus for this year is trimmed from $197 mil-lion in February to $153 million, and de Jong had to trim contingency funds to reach that.
Tax hikes are un-changed from February, including a two-year in-crease for personal in-come over $150,000 and a tobacco tax increase set for October.
The budget calls for $30 million in spending cuts this year, after last year’s reduction of $20 million in all ministries except health. The gov-ernment’s “core review” of government opera-
tions is getting under-way with a target of an-other $50 million in sav-ings by the end of 2014, but no program targets are identified in the budget update.
The price for natural gas, the key commodity for the government’s debt reduction plan, is forecast to rise from $2.25 per gigajoule this year to $2.51 and $2.89 in the next two years. Exports of liquefied nat-ural gas to Asia, where prices are currently far higher, can’t begin until well after 2015.
Lumber prices are forecast to decline, from a peak of US $348 per 1,000 board feet this year to $308 in 2014 and $300 in 2015.
De Jong said the gov-ernment’s asset sales plan is about $8 million ahead of projections, with about half of the properties, bonds and other financial holdings sold or in negotiations to sell. The goal is to raise $475 million for next year’s budget.
Properties already sold include land on Tranquille Road in Ka-mloops, a school board office in Kelowna, sur-plus school land in Delta, vacant lots in Burnaby, Surrey and near Victoria General Hospital and former school sites in Surrey and North Vancouver.
Properties going on the market include a former school board of-fice in Surrey, a vacant site north of Kelowna once planned for a pro-vincial prison, former school sites in Central Saanich, Sidney and north central Vancouver Island and land for LNG development in Kitimat.

Crews work to stabilize tanker cars on the collapsed railway bridge over the Bow River in Ogden on Thursday morning.

Five railcars filled with a pe-troleum product derailed Thurs-day when a bridge collapsed be-neath a freight train as it was crossing the swollen Bow River in Calgary.
Emergency crews were under-taking a delicate operation to se-cure the cars and empty them before they fell into the water below.
The bridge was initially sag-ging into the river, but the City of Calgary said the situation had
stabilized and the structure had not fallen any further as of 9 a.m. The collapse happened about six hours earlier.
Emergency management di-rector Bruce Burrell said the cars were not leaking, but booms were being placed down river in case of any spills.
Ed Greenberg, spokesman for CP Rail, said the five cars were carrying a product used to dilute raw oilsands bitumen. A sixth de-railed car was empty.
Greenberg said the 102-car
freight train was eastbound when it left the tracks.
“There are no leaks reported and no injuries reported as a re-sult of the incident.”
The bridge gave way after most of the train had crossed. Cars that were still on the tracks were pulled away from either end.
The immediate area around the derailment was evacuated. It’s primarily an industrial part of the city and there is a large rail-yard nearby.
