Tough winter driving conditions are a part of life in most of Canada. The seasons change, you put on winter tires, slow down and drive to conditions. However, this week, as anyone who has ventured out onto East Kootenay highways can tell you, conditions have been particularly challenging.

A FaceBook group called Taking Back East Kootenay Highways is pointing fingers at the highways contractor Mainroads, saying that they are not doing a good enough job keeping the highways in the area safe through the win-ter months.

Robert Campbell is one of the administra-tors of the group.

“It seems to us that not enough attention is being paid to roads after major incidents,” he said. That means making sure that roads are sanded and additional clearing is done days after a storm, he says.

“We all understand there are limitations to what sand and gravel can do, but they are not doing enough. Look at the roads this week. Would those conditions be acceptable in a parking lot where owners are liable? I don’t think so.”

This week the group began circulating a petition stating the following:

1. Relieve “Mainroads Contracting” from its role in highway maintenance for the East Kootenays of British Columbia and elect a different contractor for at least one term.

Crown counsel cross-examined Chey-enne Learn on Thursday in Cranbrook Su-preme Court following testimony in his de-fence of the shooting death of Tammy Ellis in 2007.

There is a federal election coming in 2015, and although no one is quite sure of the date yet, the Green Party in Kootenay Columbia will be ready.

Bill Green of Kimber-ley will be the Green Party candidate in the next federal election, after being acclaimed in the contest for the Koo-tenay-Columbia riding nomination. Shortly be-fore the scheduled De-cember 6th vote, the other contestant, Keith Page of Nelson, with-drew from the race.

“I am very excited to start campaigning now for the 2015 federal elec-tion,” said Bill Green.

From page 3“And I’m really happy

that the Kootenay-Co-lumbia Greens have se-lected a candidate early so we are ready for whenever the next elec-tion may be called.”

Green previously ran for the Greens federally in 2011.

He believes that this riding may be ready for a change from years of Conservative MPs.

“Conservative MPs represent the Conser-vative Party. Do you want someone who can really speak to the needs of the East Kootenay?” Green asked.

Green feels that the addition of the Nelson Kaslo area to the riding gives it a more progres-sive lean, giving the Green Party a better chance.

“I believe there is a growing dismay with the present govern-ment,” he said. “People are thinking that it’s time for a change. The key is to convince them that the Green Party is the change they should make.”

Green also believes that MP David Wilks will not get away with skip-ping debates and fo-rums this time around.

“The long gun regis-try is behind us. That’s no longer an issue. There are a broad range of issues and David Wilks will have to ad-dress them. He has to show up and speak to his government’s re-cord.”

Green says he will be ready to run in January.

“My intention is to begin running really hard in January,” he said. “We do have an ad-vantage right now over the Liberals and NDP as they don’t have candi-dates in place yet. We

know there has to be an election by fall, but it could be called in the spring or early summer. We have to be ready.”

“Bill is clearly the best candidate for Koo-tenay-Columbia and I look forward to working on his campaign,” said withdrawing candidate Keith Page. “I’ve been nothing but impressed with his dedication to our communities.”

“I am very apprecia-tive of Keith’s campaign to win the nomination,” added Green. “I think that it was great that we had a nomination con-test and I certainly learned from Keith’s views, as well as from all of the people I met at the 8 meetings held throughout the riding over the last six weeks.”

In place of the planned nomination meeting on Saturday, December 6th, the Koo-tenay-Columbia Greens are holding a campaign launch event in seven communities around the riding, linked by vid-eoconference. The event runs from 5 to 6pm upstairs at the Kimberley Public Li-brary. All are welcome.

“I’m campaigning to win this election, and Greens across the coun-try have shown that Greens can get elected and bring a wide range of important issues for-ward at all levels of gov-ernment” said Green. “Most importantly, I want to give real repre-sentation to the people and communities of this riding in Parliament. We need to revive our de-mocracy, we need a smart economy, and we need strong communi-ties.”

Bill Green for the

Green PartyHe testified his next

memory was laying on a road with his bicycle on one side and the gun — a sawed-off shotgun — on the other side. He said he didn’t realize he was on a bridge over-running a creek, and that he couldn’t say why he tossed it away.

Swanson opened her cross-examination by referring to the tran-script from the first trial and pointing out incon-sistencies in that testi-mony and the one he delivered on Wednes-day.

Right before the shooting, Learn testified Ellis had come outside the house and yelled at him for five minutes, in-

sulting him and making derogatory remarks about his intimacy is-sues with his ex-girl-friend.

Learn said he had trouble hearing Ellis, and it was like she was speaking in a tunnel. He later testified that his vi-sion was like a grey haze when he was inside the house directly before the shooting. Swanson questioned those spe-cific details, noting he didn’t mention them during his first trial.

The weapon itself — originally a shotgun rifle — was sold many years ago, but Learn hap-pened to reacquire it in it’s sawed-off state with the intention of restor-

ing it. Though he had other

rifles stored at his par-ents’ home, the shotgun was stored in an old army box in his trailer in four parts that required assembly in order to fire properly.

Learn testified that he had brought it out five days before the shooting with the intent of showing it to his ex-girlfriend, who was dealing cocaine at the time and wanted a fire-arm for protection.

He also testified that he had never put it to-gether at any point in the time he owned it, or even checked to see if it would fire properly.

In terms of intoxica-tion, Learn testified he had three coolers and

was mixing rum from a 375-ml bottle into a two-litre seven per cent bottle of a different kind of cooler at his trailer the night of the incident.

He had testified that he was trying to get clean and had abstained from drugs and alcohol for a few days prior, but said he relapsed on that particular night. Swan-son challenged that tes-timony by saying he was drinking because his ex-girlfriend broke up with him.

His ex-girlfriend, who will be referred to as B.L. as her identity is protected by a publica-tion ban — was over at a friends house where she was staying temporarily with Ellis.

He said he made the decision to leave his trailer and go over to the house because he was concerned about B.L.’s cocaine trafficking and drug use, and wanted to disable her vehicle with the shotgun, using three shot shells — one with birdshot and two slugs,

which he doesn’t recall taking from the storage box.

Swanson questioned his level of intoxication based on the co-ordina-tion it takes to ride a bi-cycle for approximately three kilometres to the residence.

She also challenged his reasoning, noting that if he wanted to dis-able B.L.’s vehicle, he could’ve slashed the tires, put sugar in the gas tank or smashed a win-dow.

She also challenged the effectiveness of dis-abling an engine with a shotgun shell contain-ing birdshot without having access inside the vehicle to pop the hood.

Defence counsel had a brief re-examination, establishing that he had previously testified in his appeal that he began feeling the affects of the alcohol he was drinking earlier in the evening.

Crown and defence counsel will make their final submissions on Friday.

Campbell says there

will be volunteers out there with the petition in the next month or so, at malls, stores and even door to door in some areas.

“The Legislature will not accept online peti-tions so we urge anyone to print it out and get signatures,” he said. “We don’t have a goal but we hope that in the next four to six weeks we can at least get a few thousand signatures

Road maintenance petition circulating

and then present it to MLA Bennett.”

The group has al-ready made phone calls to the office of Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, complaining about the state of the roads.

Bennett’s office has sent out a statement:

“Thank you for your email concerning the roads. We are taking your email very serious-ly and have brought your concerns to the at-tention of the Manager at Mainroads.

“We have also been in contact with the Se-nior Management of the Ministry of Highways. We have been assured that Mainroads has 3 graders working to re-move the ice on High-way 3. After the ice has been removed Main-roads will be applying sand or salt depending on temperature with liq-uid calcium to improve traction.

“The cold weather has been a challenge to remove the ice and Mainroads is working on it.”

“There is no question that at this time of year

there are a lot of com-plaints about highway conditions,” said Co-lumbia River Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald. “And there have been tough weather condi-tions lately. But there is also no question that contracts are getting tighter and tighter and it’s bound to show up. Roads simply aren’t being maintained well enough. The quality of road maintenance just isn’t there. When peo-ple’s lives are at stake, the province has to pay attention.”

The provincial Min-istry of Transportation is looking for feedback on transportation priorities until December 12. You can put provide feed-back at http://engage.gov.bc.ca/transporta-tionplan/

Moving people safely is one of the areas on which the province will accept feedback.

Mainroads East Koo-tenay was contacted for this story and indicated a statement would be released, however as of press time it had not been issued.

College of the Rockies math instructor, Dr. Jim Bailey, saved his students close to $8000 in textbook fees for the fall semester by adopting open textbooks for his courses.

The BC Open Textbook Project, funded by the BC Ministry of Advanced Ed-ucation and managed by BCcampus, aims to pro-vide flexible and affordable access to openly-licensed textbooks to post-second-ary students.

Open textbooks are re-sources created and shared in a manner that allows more people access to them than would be available with traditional, copyrighted materials. They are offered in various e-book formats free of charge or as print-on-de-mand books available at cost. Phase one of the project, which received $1 million in funding from the provincial gov-ernment in 2012, saw open resources made available for the high-est-enrolled academic subject areas. A second phase, which received an additional $1 million from the provincial gov-

ernment, is focussing on open textbooks for trades and skills training.

Bailey adopted open textbooks in September for his introductory sta-tistics course as well as for five first and second year math courses. In all, 60 students had access to online, print or PDF ver-sions of the text with a total savings of $7,920.

“I am a long-time sup-porter of open source materials. It is the way of the future and I think, moving forward, publish-ers are going to need to adapt. This was the first semester I have used open textbooks but I am happy with the results,” Bailey says.

In addition to a cost savings, open textbooks provide faculty with more control over their instruc-tional resources, helping them to provide resourc-es that are up-to-date and more relevant to stu-dents.

One of the blogs I read pretty regularly is by Peter Enns, an evangelical scholar of the Old Testament. He

usually has some pretty good things to say—and he has a weird sense of humour which appeals to me.

The other day, he posted something about St. Nicholas. The rector of the church he attends handed out a card with an icon of St. Nicholas on the front The back contained some brief facts about this saint: “Nicholas was born in the 3rd century in Asia Minor.  He used his entire inheritance to help the poor, sick, and  children  in need. He gave in secret, expecting nothing in return. He attended the Council of Nicea in AD 325. He is greatly loved for his faith, compassion and care, and is venerated in both East and West.”

Enns continues, “OK, that’s pretty cool. He gave away his entire  inheritance to those in need. I never knew that. I thought he had elves  helping  him or something, but I guess I got that part wrong.”

Enns continues, “Nicholas saved young women from slavery, protect-ed sailors, spared innocents from execu-tion, provided grain in a famine and res-cued a kidnapped boy.”

He ends, “That really hit me and made me feel stupid and cheated for never hav-ing been taught this as a child.”

I’ve written about St. Nicholas before, but let me do so again. We need to hear stories like this about people for whom living a life of love and compassion seems to be such a natural thing.

St. Nicholas’ Day falls on December 6

every year. People in northern and eastern Europe still celebrate this day by giving gifts and engaging in other festive activi-ties. In the Netherlands, where I was born, it is called Sint Nicolaas Day or Sinterklaas Day.

Over time, St. Nicholas has become the modern–day Santa Claus. The sad thing is that St. Nicholas would never recognize

himself in this fat, jolly man with a white beard. As Enns puts it, “He probably had bet-ter things on his mind than making sure nice children get an X–Box or an iPad.”

We honestly don’t have many historical facts about

St. Nicholas. We know he was a priest and later became a bishop. He seems to have been quite well off, and travelled around the country helping people, giving gifts of money and other presents, and doing so anonymously.

A famous story about St. Nicholas is how he helped a poor man who had no money to give to his three daughters on their wedding day. St Nick dropped bags of gold into the stockings which the girls had left to dry by the fire. Although this story is most likely to be legendary, it does capture the spirit of generosity and wisdom dis-played by this ancient bishop.

In a very funny monologue as a host on Saturday Night Live, Chris Rock notices that “there are no sacred days anymore. We commercialize everything. Look what we did to Christmas! This is Jesus’s birth-day! Now I don’t know Jesus, but from what I’ve read, Jesus is the least materialis-tic person to ever roam the earth. No bling on Jesus! He kept a low profile, and we

turned his birthday into the most material-istic day of the year. As a matter of fact, we’ve turned it into a whole season of ma-terialism.”

Indeed! We could use some of the spirit of St. Nicholas at this time of year. We are being swamped by consumerism. We spend money we don’t have on stuff we don’t need. We have lost our way.

St. Nicholas shows us again the grace which is found in giving freely and gener-ously to people who are truly in need. Joy is discovered not in the pile of presents stacked under the Christmas tree, but in giving of ourselves to other people in com-munity.

There are so many ways in which we can do that this season. The Salvation Ar-my’s Red Kettle appeal is present every-where you look. There are giving trees and giving fairs and other projects and pro-grams to give gifts to children who other-wise would get nothing. There are oppor-tunities to give to charities in the name of a friend or family member.

Even beyond giving tangible gifts, com-munities like Cranbrook and Kimberley need people who give of themselves as volunteers to meet various kinds of needs in our communities. Volunteers make life better for all of us. Without the spirit of volunteerism and giving, so much of what we take for granted simply wouldn’t exist.

St. Nicholas exemplified this spirit of giving. So let me wish you Happy St. Nich-olas’ Day! May the spirit of the good bishop fill your lives in this season and throughout the year.

The Wreck of the 3885

Letters to the editorChanges

I find myself content with the candi-dates elected by the voters of our commu-nity for new Mayor and Council. I’m espe-cially happy that three of candidates I voted for will now be sitting at council meetings. However I find it a sad that outgoing Mayor Wayne Stetski and Council could not have been awarded more time. Three years is not enough time to make changes.

I would like to thank Mayor Stetski, Councillors Sharon Cross, Gerry Warner for their three years’ service, and Bob Whetham for his six years of service. Prior to the last election of 2011 all of you came forward spending countless hours of fact finding and research which brought about change to our sewage infrastructure. I es-pecially thank you for helping shut down

the sewage effluent discharge into Hillbar Creek which flowed over top our well. Also for bringing cleaner water to the cows that graze on the City Irrigation Site. In my view you also saved the City a hefty lawsuit from the underground sewage effluent flow that washed out the CPR tracks at Fort Steele.

I am looking forward to the new Mayor and Council continuing the improvements that our previous Mayor and Council have started on our sewage infrastructure. I still have concerns, such as how all the chemi-cals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. are removed, as no one has given me a satisfac-tory explanation as of to date. There are still areas where the cattle are drinking out of watering dugouts that need to be tested often for E.coli and fecal bacteria counts. Lagoon 2 continues to leak hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of sewage efflu-

ent into the ground, possibly putting Fort Steele ground water at risk.

TSE “treated sewage effluent”. I do not consider the sewage effluent treated until it is returned to the same quality as before passing through a municipality!

Mayor Stetski, Councillors Sharon Cross, Gerry Warner, and Bob Whetham, your stay was short. However you showed up at the right moment in time and made changes that this City desperately needed. I and my family sincerely thank each and every one of you and all the voters that gave you that opportunity to make these chang-es in 2011!

We wish you the very best in the years ahead.

The road travelled is not always the road planned. Photo mon-tage Cameron 2014

The train pulled out of Cranbrook at approxi-mately 10:30 a.m., on the

morning of November 20, 1925.A CPR freight heading west

to Spokane, it was carrying the usual compliment of crewmen: engineer Henry “Harry” Gam-mon, fireman Robert “Bob” Eley, head-brakeman Hubert “Bert” Huxtable, rear-end brakeman Edward “Ted” Gum-mer and conductor William Long, all from Cranbrook, all in their thirties, and all with years of railway experience.

The weather was just start-ing to change following a warm, wet spell which melted most of the previous snow. “Ice-making” weather at last, although the local rinks were not yet quite frozen.

On this particular run, the train was 15–20 minutes late leaving Cranbrook, not an un-usual occurrence but one that would necessitate the freight train pausing at the town of Moyie to let a trailing passen-ger train from Cranbrook pass by.

The freight was hauled by coal-fired, steam locomotive #3885, an engine constructed in 1910, by the Montreal Loco-motive Works, and later rebuilt to a newer class N3 2-8-0; a no-nonsense, hard-driving machine.

The train crew, following a brief stop to take on water near Jerome tunnel (across Moyie lake from Green Bay Resort), were in their places onboard for the expected run around the lake: Bob Eley and Bert Huxtable riding in the cab with engineer Gammon, and con-

ductor Long and Ted Gummer in the caboose.

As later recalled by the engi-neer, the train travelled at a speed of about 20 miles an hour, with numerous rock bluffs rising to the immediate left and loose rock falling sharp-ly into the lake to the right. Rockslides, although not com-mon, were always a concern.

On this particular day the tracks had been patrolled just a half-hour prior to the arrival of the train but, nonetheless, as the train rounded the final sharp curve heading into what is commonly referred to as “The Narrows” — where the

lake all but disappears for a time before opening up again near the town of Moyie — Bert Huxtable, keeping lookout from the cab’s left window, saw, to his dismay, a large rock slide resting directly on the rails ahead. From his estimated dis-tance of 75 yards, at a speed of 20 mph, there would be a time lapse of about eight seconds before the inevitable collision. Bert gave a loud cry of warning as engineer Gammon, having also spotted the obstruction, set the brakes and closed the throttle. In the words of Harry Gammon, “Bert tumbled out the cab window. Bob stayed

with me when we struck the slide to plow through it. The engine tilted and I jumped, landing on the rocks below the tracks and rolling into the lake. When I came to, I was strug-gling deep down in the lake … I fought my way up to daylight and swam ashore to see Hux-table walking by the side of the track. He was bleeding and quite badly hurt by his fall from the cab.”

Some of the many rocks scattered on the tracks mea-sured fifteen feet across, caus-ing the locomotive to partly re-verse direction as it plunged into the lake, dragging the coal tender directly behind the en-gine and two others cars — one also loaded with coal — into the cold, murky water.

Both Bert Huxtable and Harry Gammon, recovering from their ordeal, and Ted Gummer and William Long, both unscathed, quickly real-ized that not only was there no sign of Bob Eley, but that the passenger train was due along the line in a very short time. A runner was sent to flag it down and managed to halt it in time.

A search of the crash scene found no trace of fireman Eley. Only the top of the locomotive windows were visible in the water and the interior ap-peared to be at least partially filled with coal thrown from the tender.

By late afternoon the deci-sion was made to bring in a professional diver from Van-couver. He arrived Sunday and began searching for the fire-man’s body the following day. On Wednesday afternoon he uncovered Bob Eley’s feet sub-merged beneath a large heap of coal and debris in the lake, some distance from the engine. The body was extricated on Thursday and brought to Cran-brook.

Kootenay Ice captain Sam Reinhart (pictured last season) was named to Team Canada selection camp for the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship Monday.

Calm & collected CanuckReinhart named to Team Canada selection camp ahead of World Junior Championship

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

Sitting on the Koote-nay Ice bus outside Ever-ett, Wash., last Sunday, Sam Reinhart received a call he had been anx-iously awaiting.

The 19-year-old Koo-tenay Ice star was one of 29 players named to Team Canada selection camp for the 2015 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship Monday morning.

“It’s been on my mind for quite some time,” Re-inhart said Thursday af-ternoon prior to Koote-nay Ice practice at West-ern Financial Place. “I’m obviously looking for-ward to it.”

With 17 forwards on the preliminary roster, there are no guarantees for Reinhart. That being said, as one of only four returning forwards from the 2014 squad, the North Vancouver native and second-overall se-lection of the NHL’s Buf-falo Sabres is about as near a lock as they come.

“From what I learned

last year, it’s a tough tournament to even get to the medal stages,” Re-inhart said. “It takes a big effort out of the group to buy in to the process.”

Team Canada hasn’t medalled at the World Junior Championship since earning bronze in 2012. With such a wide array of experience, Re-inhart is hoping to take on a leadership role this year as Canada strives to end its medal drought.

“There’s quite a few of us with experience from the tournament last year and I know that’s an important thing,” Reinhart said. “We did have good lead-ers last year as well, and we learned a lot from them. That’s a big thing in a tournament like this.”

In net, Zach Fucale of the Halifax Mooseheads returns, while Chris Bi-gras (Owen Sound, OHL) and Josh Mor-rissey (Prince Albert, WHL) represent the two returners on the blue-line.

Joining Reinhart for a

return engagement up front are forwards Frederik Gauthier (Ri-mouski, QMJHL), Con-nor McDavid (Erie, OHL) and Nic Petan (Portland, WHL).

There are plenty of obvious assets Reinhart brings to the table, evi-denced by an 11-game point streak that has seen him register 23 points for the Kootenay Ice. There’s no question-ing the two-way ability of Kootenay’s star captain.

But Ice head coach Ryan McGill, who served as an assistant coach with Canada’s 2014 World Junior Championship entry, believes it is the intangi-bles that set Reinhart apart, not only at the major junior level, but on the international stage as well.

“I know this for a fact, whether he is named captain or whether he is considered a leader,” McGill said Thursday, “[the tournament] is in Canada -- [Sam] doesn’t fizzle or have any phase to pressure. He is calm,

he is collected. Nobody can ever see on his face whether you’re up by a goal or down by a goal. He’s always the same player.

“Those are the intan-gibles that mean more to me. I know how he’s going to compete in the games. He’s going to try to be the best player on the ice. He’s going to make his linemates bet-ter…The pressure of being in Canada -- he can handle it better than anybody I know. Yes, I’m a little biased, but he backs up my words.”

The Buffalo Sabres prospect was steady at last year’s tournament in Malmo, Sweden, tal-lying two goals and five points in seven games.

Team Canada selec-tion camp opens Dec. 11 in Toronto. Reinhart will head east Dec. 10 following a Dec. 9 meet-ing between the Koote-nay Ice and Medicine Hat Tigers.

Reinhart is one of 14 WHL players named to Team Canada selection camp.

The Motherland callsValiev headed for Team Russia’s World Junior camp

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

No matter when you talk to Kootenay Ice de-fenceman Rinat Valiev, hard work always comes up in conversation.

It’s no secret the To-ronto Maple Leafs pros-pect focuses on putting forth his best effort each and every day he is at the rink, whether that be in practice or during a game.

Last Friday, that ef-fort landed the 19-year-old native of Nizh-nekamsk on the selec-tion camp roster for Team Russia ahead of

the 2015 IIHF World Ju-nior Championship.

“I have been waiting for that roster for the last two weeks,” Valiev said Thursday afternoon on the concourse of West-ern Financial Place, tak-ing a pause from his pre-practice warm-up with Tim Bozon. “I’m so excited to go there.”

Valiev was one of 14 defencemen named to the 38-man roster for Team Russia’s World Ju-nior Championship se-lection camp, so he still has a ways to go before solidifying a spot for himself.

“I have to work so

hard everywhere,” Va-liev said. “I don’t know if there’s something spe-cial I have to do. I just work hard and show my best game.”

Valiev has quietly put forth a strong perfor-mance to start the 2014-15 WHL campaign. After missing the first 12 games of the year with a lower-body injury, the Russian rearguard is chugging along with 19 points in 16 games since his return.

Though he doesn’t claim to have any insight into the approach of Russian management, Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill believes his defenceman’s familiarity with the North American ice surface will provide a leg up when it comes to making the final roster. After a year in Malmo, Sweden, the World Ju-nior Championship re-turns to Canada, hosted in Toronto and Montreal later this month.

“It’s a smaller ice sur-face, which he has tre-mendous experience on right now,” McGill said Thursday. “Things hap-pen quicker and he has obviously accustomed himself to being a good player in our league

where things happen quick.”

Valiev has been in North America since the 2012-13 season when he skated in 36 games with the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League. He joined the Kootenay Ice for the 2013-14 campaign.

“I will feel more com-fortable,” Valiev said. “It’s a big difference with the ice. It’s hard to feel better [about your game] when you’re changing ice.”

The 6-foot-2 defence-man was one of only four North American-skating Russian defencemen named to the selection camp, joined by Nikita Zadorov (Buffalo, NHL), Ivan Provorov (Brandon, WHL) and Damir Shar-ipzyanov (Owen Sound, OHL).

“His personality, his commitment to getting better, all those things are what you want in a teammate,” McGill said of Valiev. “Hopefully they’ve done their re-search enough that he can endear himself to that staff.”

Team Russia will host a camp in Novogorsk

prior to departing for Canada. According to a press release from the Russian Ice Hockey Fed-eration, the team begins training in Oshawa, Ont.,

Dec. 17. According to Va-liev, he and the other CHL players named are not required to travel to Moscow.

The 2015 IIHF World

Junior Championship begins Dec. 26 at the Air Canada Centre in Toron-to when Russia faces Denmark in the first game of the tournament.

Going to battleIce set for home-and-home with Spokane Chiefs

Taylor rocc aSports Editor

For the second time in a week, the Kootenay Ice play three games in three nights, including a home-and-home battle with the Spokane Chiefs.

“You try to narrow your focus knowing you’re playing six peri-ods against an oppo-nent,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill Thursday afternoon. “You try to challenge yourself and your group to understand the inten-sity level is going to be up. It’s a great rivalry.

“You try to get your players to understand, playing the game inside the game might have an advantage for you. That’s just doing all the little things and maybe getting inside the head of your opponent.”

The Chiefs will visit Western Financial Place Friday night at 7 p.m., before returning home

to welcome the Ice to Spokane Veterans Me-morial Arena Saturday.

Spokane holds the slightest edge in the five-game season series, hav-ing claimed a 4-3 victory Oct. 25 at home, while falling to the Ice in over-time Oct. 3 in Cranbrook.

The last time the two teams met at Western Fi-nancial Place, it was Jae-don Descheneau blow-ing the roof off the rink, scoring with three sec-onds to play in overtime to give the Ice its first win of the 2014-15 campaign.

Ice captain Sam Re-inhart will look to ex-tend his 11-game point streak, which is the lon-gest active streak in the WHL heading into Fri-day’s contest. The 19-year-old Buffalo Sa-bres prospect has yet to be held off the score-sheet since his return from the NHL, tallying six goals and 23 points.

“It’s always an op-

portunity, when you’re playing out-of-confer-ence teams, to get back in the swing of things,” Reinhart said Thursday. “If we focus on our own game plan and focus on the things that have given us success the last little while, I think we’ll be fine.”

Reinhart isn’t familiar with the 2014-15 edition of the Spokane Chiefs,

having returned to the Ice Nov. 7 against the Ed-monton Oil Kings. In the two contests against Spokane without the North Vancouver native in the lineup, the Ice were outshot by a com-bined margin of 82-56.

“We focus on work ethic, compete and stuff like that,” said Ice de-fenceman Rinat Valiev. “We have to shoot more

from everywhere.”Friday night rep-

Call Chalet Chevrolet Buick GMC at 250-427-4895, or visit us at 1142 - 304 Street, Kimberley.

The death of Bob Eley, a man, according to his obitu-ary, of exemplary character and of a quiet disposition, aroused great sympathy in the community. The funeral at the Baptist church on the corner of 11th Avenue and 1st Street, was largely attended. Among the hymns, somewhat ironi-cally, was the tune “Rock of Ages.”

A cortege of almost one

hundred people followed by 25 cars followed the hearse to the General Cemetery where Bob was laid to rest. His now weathered gravestone (pic-tured above) carries the in-scription: In the midst of life we are in death.”

Things gradually returned to normal for the survivors of the crash, all of whom contin-ued working the rails for years to come. It is safe to say that nothing was ever quite normal

again for Mabel Eley and her four young children. The day after the accident Mrs. Eley was quoted as stating, “I must bear up for the sake of my little ones – Bobby’s children and mine. It has been so willed that Bob died in the perfor-mance of his duty…We cannot help but think of the terrible calamity that would have en-sued had it been not Bob’s train but the passenger that was following a few minutes

behind that had plunged through that rock slide into the lake.”

As for the badly damaged locomotive No. 3885, it and the other cars were removed from the lake within days. The engine was sent back to the Montreal Locomotive Works from whence it came. Its fate from that time to now is un-known.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll say what is on your mind, and others will give you a quick response. Confusion could be the outcome if they haven’t thought through their responses. Be spontaneous and open-minded. You might be surprised by how everything works out. Tonight: Chat with a friend. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might be swallowing some anger over a personal issue. Don’t use shopping as an outlet, because doing so would end in regret. You also are likely to change your mind about your choices, so be sure to keep your receipts. Tonight: Pay bills, then decide what you can afford. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) After a few difficult days, you might feel as if you finally are back in the swing of things with your daily routine. A friend or loved one could shock you with his or her news. Absorb what you are hearing, but don’t take his or her words as being written in stone. Tonight: TGIF!

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You have accomplished a lot this week, and you could feel your-self slowing down. A problem with a loved one could result in his or her creating some distance between you. Express your grati-tude if he or she decides to open up and share with you. Tonight: Indulge yourself. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might feel pushed by an associate, but understand that a cold shoulder doesn’t explain where you are coming from. A flirtation also could cause you a problem. Do your best not to mix business with pleasure. Tonight: Do what you want -- just don’t be alone. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Clearly an interaction with someone you respect could put you on edge; you might not know why until you speak with a loved one about it. Indulge this person, as he or she is consis-tently there for you. Make time for a spontaneous get-together. Tonight: A force to behold. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Honor a change of pace. You can

intellectualize to your heart’s content yet still have plenty of time for a fun conversation. The combination will help you relax as your weekend begins. A loved one could be unpredictable. Strap on your seat belt. Tonight: Take off! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Try not to color someone else’s day as somber; projecting your mood onto others can cause a lot of problems. Fortunately, you will be able to turn this at-titude around. Anger could build on the homefront, but you will know what to do. Tonight: Your home is your castle. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to see what is happening with some associates before you decide that a proj-ect isn’t likely to work out. Get the full story, and then make a decision. Avoid actively commu-nicating while doing anything that requires your attention. Tonight: Remain anchored. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You will want to have a long-overdue discussion with a co-worker whom you see almost

daily. You might even be exercise buddies! You’ll discover how much you have in common, and you’ll wish you had more time together. Why not make plans? Tonight: Surprises surround you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Be more forthright with a loved one. Try to be gentle in your choice of words and attitude; otherwise, you could come across as being harsh. Under-stand what is happening within you. Perhaps you need to plan a vacation. Tonight: Let off some steam. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Keep your own counsel, if pos-sible. You might be taken aback by what is going on behind the scenes. Touch base with a family member or a loved one to get more information. Curb an im-pulse to go spending for now. Tonight: Make it your treat. BORN TODAY Business magnate Walt Disney (1901), singer/songwriter Little Richard (1932), comedian Mar-garet Cho (1968) ***

Dear Annie: I am a middle school student, and one of my friends is depressed. She and her family are atheists, and they have been repeatedly harassed about it to the point that her worst fear is dying and going to hell. I’m really scared for my friend. When we found out she was thinking about suicide the first time, we got her to go to the school counselor, who, instead of telling her that she was depressed and needed psycholog-ical help, told her she had made mistakes and needed to be more careful. This only decreased her already low self-esteem. Now she thinks she’s a coward. My friend is also painfully lonely and convinced that everyone hates her. I do not trust the school to help, and nei-ther does she. Everyone says she’s just be-ing dramatic. I have no idea what I am sup-posed to do. -- Powerless Dear Powerless: First understand that ha-rassing someone for her religious beliefs (or lack thereof ) is bullying and should be reported to the school authorities. It is very difficult when a student doesn’t conform to the dominant attitudes of the school, and it takes a great deal of courage to stand your ground. She is fortunate to have you on her side. Is there a sympathetic teach-er or coach she can talk to? If the bullying continues, her parents should speak to the school board and even the local police. We assume her parents are aware of the bul-lying. If not, please tell them immediately. Your friend’s well-being is at stake. Dear Annie: Our extended family is rel-atively small, and we all live nearby. We gather for annual holiday dinners. Four of the seven women have a very close relationship, with frequent telephone calls, personal contacts and shared vacations. When the family gathers for the holiday dinners, these four women separate them-selves from the remaining family and have a raucous time together with their private jokes, etc. They go to another room and make no attempt to include others in their “clique,” so the other three women and the remaining family are left out of this merriment. The men don’t seem to mind. However, we, the three excluded women, feel this behavior is rude. It makes us feel isolated and offended. After one such holiday, a comment was made to a clique member that they should attempt to socialize outside their group, but their be-havior hasn’t changed. One of the offend-ed females is questioning why she and her spouse should even attend these gather-ings. Do you have any suggestions as to how to handle this situation? -- On the Outside Looking In Dear Outside: Are the parents around? Mom or Dad should make it clear that this rude, exclusive behavior is inappropriate for family gatherings and will not be toler-ated. If there is no authority figure whom these women will listen to, your best op-tion is to ignore them. It would be a shame for these family gatherings to disintegrate because a few people are terminal adoles-cents. Don’t treat them as if they are the cool kids in high school. Talk to the other family members. Have the interesting and amusing conversations they will be jealous to have missed. Dear Annie: You’ve printed several letters about what to do with old photographs. Ev-ery photo has a meaning to someone. And all those photos are history to a family. As a hobby, I scan all family photos and put them into a separate folder on my comput-er. I then edit them and burn them to a CD. If the family has five members, I burn five CDs. The best part is, I do a family movie with music and burn that to a DVD so the family can watch it on TV. I also tell every-one to put the CDs and DVDs in a safe so they are protected from water or fire dam-age. -- Mesa, Ariz. Ten Reasons to Advertise on a Newspaper Website

1. Frequency: The online newspaper Web site user accesses the Internet almost twice as much as the general user.

2. Credibility: The credibility of the newspaper brand extends to the advertiser. Fifty-nine percent of Web users agree that online advertising is more believable from a trusted Web site. Online, newspaper Web sites are the dominant local media site in most markets.

3. Targeted: If you want to focus on a particular backyard, advertising in an online newspaper is more personal, and more relevant because it is local. Newspapers also publish a plethora of niche sites (youth, women, movie fans, seniors, are illustrative) for virtually any demographic advertisers could possibly hope to reach.

4. Purchasing power: Sixty-two percent of newspaper Web site users purchase online compared with 49 percent of general users. Thirty-nine percent of online newspaper users have incomes higher than $75,000; 65 percent own their homes. Fifty percent of online newspaper users have spent more than $500 online in the last six months, and 63 percent of online newspaper users prefer to find out about new products through the Internet.

5. Content: After e-mail, the most preferred Web content is news, sports, financial information, entertainment news, and shopping – in that order. Sixty-two percent of Internet users visit online newspapers for local news, compared with 39 percent for the local TV station Web site and 23 percent for the local radio station site. Not even Yahoo! or AOL’s Digital City can top this.

6. Retailers prefer newspaper sites: Sixty-five percent of retailers report that newspaper sites are efficient in assisting them in meeting marketing needs compared with other sites.

7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products,” “Where I prefer to receive information about companies,” and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise.” At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35.

8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns.

9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.

10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium.
