Prayer

15th March, 2019

Dear Parents and Friends,

We have past the midway mark of term 1 and school is certainly in full swing. Our Year 11 and 12 students are away at their respective camps and the Year 10 girls have taken part in a Futures Programme exploring the world of work and mapping out their own career pathway. Last week our Year 7 girls went to Phillip Island for their annual camp at Cowes. I was able to visit the girls on their second day and they were in good spirits. It was great to see the girls engaging in the various activities and dipping their toes in the cold water! Camp is an important event to ensure the girls get to know each other and make new friends apart from those they know from primary school. It was evident from my short time there that the idea of inclusiveness and hospitality was not lost on the girls and everyone was welcomed into the group. We look forward with great expectations to watching this cohort of students develop over the years. They show the promise of being a wonderful group of young women. Sincere thanks to Mrs Kennedy and her team for leading and coordinating this important event.

As we move into the second week of Lent we remember that Lent is a time to reflect on how we can be better versions of ourselves and allow ourselves the time to reflect on who we are.

One of the Lenten challenges is examining not only how we treat others but how we treat ourselves. Am I the best that I can be? Does every moment, every thought, word or action, help me to become a-better-version-of myself or a-lesser-version-of myself? Am I worth that ten minutes of time out, time to just sit and be still, no children talking at me, no work beckoning me and no sense of guilt nagging me? The secret of life is getting really good at becoming aware of and acting on the things that make me a better-version-of-myself. It's a journey lived through every moment of the day and so in the next week or two of Lent we should ask ourselves 'What would the best-version-of-myself do in this moment?'

Wishing you and your family a safe and happy week ahead,

Out and About

In Term 2 of 2018 Killester became part of history. For the first time since the inception of NAPLAN in 2008 a number of schools, including Killester College, were part of the pilot program to take NAPLAN testing into the digital age and online.

Killester College will be completing NAPLAN Online again in 2019. As part of our preparations for this, the College will run a practice test coordinated with other school completing NAPLAN Online on Thursday March 28 with all Year 7 students. This will allow the school and ACARA to confirm the capabilities of the online system with large simultaneous login, as well as allow the students to become familiar with the online test platform and its functionality prior to the actual NAPLAN testing in May. On this day it is important that all Year 7 arrive at school with their laptop fully charged.

All students in Year 9 will also complete NAPLAN Online in May 2019. An opportunity will also be given to them to login and become familiar with a practice test later in Term 1.

Prior to the practice test, staff in the IT Department will arrange with students in Year 7 and Year 9 for the installation of the Lock Down Browser required for the testing. Further information regarding NAPLAN Online will follow early in Term 2.

VCE Art and Textiles NGV Excursion

On Saturday 9th March, Mrs Anna Miha's Unit 3 VETiS Applied Fashion Design and Technology and Ms Fros Stabologlou's Unit 3 Art classes, attend an excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria International, on St Kilda Road.

In the morning, the Art class attended a presentation by current exhibiting Top Arts students. Our students attentively listened to the presenters who shared their experiences and gave insight into completing Unit 3. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to view the top scoring folios and ask the exhibiting students questions.

During this time the fashion students were treated to a spectacular of more than 200 garments on display at The Krystyna Campbell-Pretty Fashion Gift exhibition. The display is a microcosm of the world of haute couture and Parisian fashion from the late nineteenth century to the twenty-first century. The newly gifted NGV Collection includes designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli, the Boué Soeurs, who were specialists in embroidery and the luscious gowns of Christian Lacrois. Also represented are Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s ‘little black dress’ in a number of styles, and the sculptural bias-cut gowns by Madeleine Vionnet, a designer of the 1920s and 1930s who has inspired countless designers, including Issey Miyake and John Galliano. Other big fashion houses included are Dior, Givenchy and Alexander Mc Queen to name a few. The students were in awe of the beautiful designs and workmanship and marvelled at the cyclic nature of fashion. After lunch, both classes attended the exhibition, Escher X nendo: Between Two Worlds. Students were fascinated and thrilled to see the intricately drawn and printed artworks by M. C. Escher, complimented by the installations of Japanese design studio work of Nendo.

The excursion was an invaluable experience, as all students will be able to incorporate various aspects of the excursion, into their theory and folio work. This will enable students to produce work of a higher standard, which both teachers are looking forward to seeing.

Year 7 Camp 2019

This year we went to Phillip Island for camp and it was a experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. Coming into camp I was really excited to make new friends that I will keep forever and even though I knew this was going to happen I didn't know how easy it is to talk to new people.

What I learnt from this camp is that everybody wants to find new friends so it wasn't too hard to come up and say hi there to everybody. Previously, it wasn’t the easiest thing to just walk up to somebody and say “hi can we be friends?’

We all had different experiences every day at camp. Although I really like to step out of my comfort zone I've never done it this much. When you come to a new school or start high school I think everybody feels the same, not knowing names and you tend to stick around your primary school group. However this camp experience changed that.

My most awesome memory would be Killester idol. Killester idol was amazing. I do not normally perform on stage even though I do believe I have a lot of confidence, but to perform in front of 160 kids was scary. The moment our group were on stage, I felt comfortable and supported by the group of students. We talked later about the fun we had performing to the audience and stepping out of our comfort zone.

One piece of advice for the future Year 7 students would be to enjoy camp, step out of your comfort zone, try to make new friends and attempt new activities such as bike riding and swimming at the beach. Your camp experience will be a positive one with wonderful memories of your time as a Year 7 student.

Career Focus – Primary Teaching

Primary school teachers educate primary school children by planning and conducting an education programs to develop literacy and numeracy, as well as the physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth of their students. Primary school teachers are usually trained to teach the whole curriculum. Some undertake further studies to become specialist primary teachers in areas such as music, physical education, art etc. Others undertake training in order to develop and teach programmes for students with special needs or rural and isolated children or children for whom English is a second language. Primary school teachers:

Prepare daily and longer-term lesson plans in accordance with curriculum guidelines. Teach a full range of learning areas, including English (reading, writing, speaking and listening), mathematics,

science, technology, society and environment, creative arts, personal development, health and physical education. Develop children’s interests, abilities and coordination using creative activities such as art, music and sport. Use computers to assist with lesson preparation, teaching and reporting. Develop and maintain good working habits and discipline in classrooms. Carry out administrative duties. Supervise students during classes and at other times in the school day, including in the playground during breaks. Attend staff meetings and other training and development sessions. Take part in joint decision-making about educational issues. Assess and evaluate students’ progress in written and oral work. Discuss students’ progress and concerns with parents and administrators. Assist with and organise sporting activities, school concerts and excursions. Prepare for and attend parent-teacher interviews and other functions.

To consider primary teaching, it helps if you:

Enjoy working with children Are creative and organised Are patient in dealing with students of differing abilities Are able to communicate simply and clearly Are prepared to work outside of school hours.

To become a primary school teacher, you usually have to complete a degree in primary education or primary school teaching. Alternatively, you can undertake a post graduate qualification specialising in primary education after completing a degree with relevant study areas. For example, a degree in Arts followed by a Graduate Entry Teaching (Graduate Entry Teaching) course i.e. Master in Teaching. To get into the degree courses, you usually need to have gained your V.C.E. prerequisite subjects, or assumed knowledge, in one or more of English and mathematics. It’s important to research your universities of choice and be aware of entry requirements. To apply for a bachelor degree in teaching, you will need to complete the CASPer test. The CASPer test is a non-cognitive online test which assessing various things such as; communication, empathy, problem solving etc. and you only need to complete it once if you are applying for one or more courses via VTAC. The test is open for completion between August 1st and July 31st. To read more about preparation and registration, please visit: https://takecasper.com/about-casper/ Competition for positions in metropolitan schools is very strong. Teachers should be prepared to move to areas of need (rural areas, for example) to secure a job or obtain promotion to senior positions. Once employed, prospects for advancements can be enhanced by obtaining higher qualifications. Primary school teachers also need to continually update their subject knowledge and teaching methods through private study and professional development activities. With further training and experience, you may be promoted to a position of educational leadership, such as a primary school principal. The below table outlines; pathway courses into degrees into Teaching and Education, Bachelor Degree’s in Education and Graduate Entry Teaching options.

Career Profile Name: Samantha Cannizzaro Current Position: Contracted Relief Teacher at St Simons Primary School Can you tell us where you studied, how long your course duration was and where you undertook your work placement to become qualified as a teacher? I studied at Deakin University for both my Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Teaching qualifications. The Bachelor of Arts is a 3 year course which enables you to major or minor in a variety of different fields. I double majored in Media/Communications and Dance. I then went on to complete my Masters of Teaching, a 2-year course, majoring in Secondary education and leadership. Throughout my studies I completed 2 major placements at Hallam Senior College and St Francis Xavier College allowing me to graduate in 2016. Whilst you were studying at secondary school, did you know teaching is what you wanted to get into? Teaching had always been a career I was interested in but it wasn’t until I went to University and began my Bachelor of Arts that I decided it was the course my life would take. I hadn’t planned to follow up my Bachelor with a teaching degree but knew that enrolling in the Bachelor of Arts course would provide a lot of flexibility and options for further study What do you love about your job? I currently work in relief work which I thoroughly enjoy due to its flexible nature and rewarding conditions. I find it exciting entering a new classroom each day and working with an array of people. I love working in the Primary school sector also which was not something I anticipated having studied towards working in Secondary schools, but I always feel appreciated for the work that I do. What personal requirements would you say are necessary in your position? You have to be a flexible person who is willing to bring energy and creative thinking into each day. Often times you will have to think on your feet and react quickly while maintaining a willingness to try new things. What are the challenges of teaching and the best ways to overcome those challenges? The biggest challenge I face particularly as a relief teacher is understanding each student’s different needs and ways to fulfil them. It is very important to me that everyone feels that they have a place in the classroom and the best way to overcome that is to make sure everyone feels heard. It’s often hard to prepare for each day as a relief teacher so I always try to remain as engaging as possible so that no matter the content everyone wants to get involved and their expectations for the day are met.
