Get set for an Inspiring adventureMount Kilimanjaro, the “Mountain of Greatness”,

is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world.

While you may have your own reason for wanting to

climb Kilimanjaro, one thing is common amongst all

those who do is the desire to stand on the highest

peak of Africa, possibly God’s greatest mountain.

There is nothing quite like it anywhere else on

earth. It is a challenge, no doubt, but the rewards

are immense - the endemic fauna, the history,

geology and local mythology, and the warmth of

the sun rising over Africa, climbing slowly above the

summit of Mawenzi and catching the glacial ice that

accompanies you along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.

Kilimanjaro the highest, most accessible, “walkable” mountain on the planet.

Are you up for the challenge ?The Connect Adventure challenge is your perfect opportunity to trek with a group of like minded people, while raising funds to help Daw House Hospice Foundation continue its vital work helping people with life limiting illness and their families.

To become a part of this truly inspirational experience involves two simple steps:

Register with Connect Adventures for the Kilimanjaro challenge. As soon as you register your dedicated fundraising team will work with you to create a comprehensive fundraising plan.

You start to fundraise the minimum target amount of $3000. A team representative will contact you regularly with ideas, advice, encouragement - and plenty of inspiration. You will also receive a registration pack with a comprehensive fundraising guide full of great ideas and case studies from previous participants. We will support you every step of the way.

You can pay the whole amount yourself rather than do fundraising or you can pay for part of it and fund raise the remainder. Do whatever works for you!

DAWHOUSE HOSPICE

Behind every person with a life ending illness, is the support of a loving family and friends who also share the journey.

About Daw House Hospice When a cure is no longer possible, patients require not only physical support, but also psychological, emotional and spiritual care.

The Daw House Hospice Foundation is part of this vital support network. The Foundation plays a direct role in this work by raising the funds needed to ensure the journey is made comfortable by supporting programs, items, and services not currently funded by the Government.

Southern Adelaide Palliative Services (SAPS) manage the Daw House Hospice and community service programs which enable over 1,200 patients each year the choice to remain at home through this stage of life.

Through the work of our members, staff and volunteers we raise the $97,000 every year needed to provide this support.

Our work is driven by a strong emphasis on encouragement, motivation and a celebration of life. We invite you to join us in making sure that the funds are available so that we can continue this crucial support.

Shelly knows the importance of this work. Shelly was initially cared for by services in her own home, but when her condition became more complex, Shelly chose to move to Daw House Hospice, the SAPS inpatient unit.

Shelly and her family spent a total of 7 weeks at the Daw House Hospice. During this time, Shelly expressed her joy at being in such a special place with her family welcomed at any hour of the day.

Because of her experience, Shelly’s daughter Candi has committed her time to raising funds to help other families.

The following is a quote from her mum Shelly’s journal:

We invite you to join our team by raising funds to show support for those on their end of life journey.

‘‘The Daw House Hospice is such a wonderful place, the nurses and staff here are such beautiful souls. I am so comfortable here and it‘s so calming. My family are also comfortable and are being treated with such kindness. I know I’m not leaving here now in the physical sense, but it is okay because I feel like I am home, We all do.‘‘

Day 1 ArushaAccommodation: Arusha Hotel

Possible sightings of the colobus monkey as you trek through the forest. (BLD)

Day 3 Shira (3720 m)Accommodation: Shira Camp

Today is an easy paced acclimatization day. Hike over streams, a river gorge, and moorlands. Your camp is located on the Shira Plateau, providing expansive views of Kilimanjaro. There will be an altitude conditioning hike in the afternoon where you can enjoy the clusters of giant lobelias and senecios that grow at this elevation. (BLD)

Day 4 Barranco (3900 m)Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Today is another altitude acclimatization day of predominately uphill climbing to Lover tower then descend into Baranco Valley. Pass through the alpine moorland zone where plants are extremely hardy and consist of lichens, grasses, and heather, to reach Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert zone. After a hot lunch at Lover Tower the descent to the Baranco Valley is dominated by the beautiful giant senecions and Lobelia moorland forest. (BLD)

Day 5 Karanga (4000 m)Accommodation: Karanga Camp

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads you to an undulating trail on the south eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Ice fields. Lunch is usually taken at Karanga, the last water point, in a steep valley. (BLD)

If you are still feeling strong you can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshment continue to descend to reach your final campsite at the edge of Mweka Forest. (BLD)

Day 8 ArushaAccommodation: Arusha Hotel

A final descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes you to the National Park gate at Mweka. Transfer to your hotel in Arusha for a heavenly shower. (B)

The summit of Kilimanjaro is nearly 6,000m and this particular mountain has a rapid rate of ascent, even with

the rest day included, which causes most climbers to experience different levels and symptoms of altitude

sickness. This may include headache, nausea, difficulty breathing and general weakness. More severe reactions

can include cerebral edema and pulmonary edema, which may result in death or permanent injury. Sometimes

judgment is affected when experiencing mountain sickness. Your guide will help you maximize your ability to

climb and will also determine if you are displaying any symptoms of altitude sickness that may put you, as well

as the rest of your group, in serious danger by requiring an emergency rescue. By participating in this group

expedition, you agree to accept the guide’s opinion should he advise you not to continue. Remember at Wildlife Safari, the safety of our passengers and staff is our first priority.

Unlike most travel companies, Wildlife Safari does not request or accept marketing funds from any hotel, lodge, camp, and resort or local operator to promote their product so we have an objective selection criteria based on safety, location, facilities, cuisine, service and value. The same policy applies when the Wildlife Safari team travels to our destinations so that we maintain total transparency and objectivity. Our first priority is to provide the best options for our guests.

Wildlife Safari is a full service tour operator, we take care of all land arrangements from the time you arrive

at your destination to the time you depart on your flight home. We do not provide a hotel booking service

only, nor are we a transportation company and we don’t handle partial land arrangements, as ommissions can

happen with more than one supplier involved in the mix. Unless noted otherwise, all hotel/lodge/camp/resort

accommodations are quoted as “run of house” and room upgrades are available at a supplemental cost. As

outlined in our published “Terms & Conditions”, our costs include expenses incurred for advertising, sales and

marketing, promotions, reservation service as well as commissions paid to licensed travel agents as is the case

with all travel arrangements made through a licensed travel agency in Australia. Wildlife Safari offers exceptional

destination and product knowledge learned from our forty years of “hands on” experience as a luxury travel

company. Remember, booking on a website may be cheaper, but cannot provide the same level of assistance

both in Australia and on the ground at your destination.

All airfares and land costs are subject to change without prior notice due to events beyond the control of Wildlife

Safari. Receipt of your full payment by Wildlife Safari will guarantee your travel arrangements and protects

you from further cost increases, including future currency fluctuations, but only if Wildlife Safari receives your

full tour payment by the due date. Receipt of payment by your agent does not constitute receipt of funds by

Wildlife Safari. At times, the accommodations outlined in your itinerary may not be available due to reasons

beyond the control of Wildlife Safari and comparable alternative accommodations will be provided. Changes to

all reservations after confirmation will incur a $50.00 administrative fee and all changes made less than sixty

days of your date of departure will be subject to the cancellation penalties as outlined in our published terms

and conditions. Additional charges may apply to guarantee rooms for early arrival or late departure. Our Terms

& Conditions of business as printed in all our brochures apply to every Wildlife Safari reservation. A copy is

Frequently asked QUESTIONSQ: How fit do I need to be?A: The Kilimanjaro trek is a challenging adventure. Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and any attempt to reach its summit successfully requires a level of physical fitness. It is important therefore to train properly prior to any attempt, building up stamina and fitness over a number of months. Hill walking, cycling and swimming are excellent forms of exercise and will help prepare your body for the physical exertions required during the hike. Any climbers who suffer from any cardiac or pulmonary problems should be cautious and should not attempt to climb the mountain unless they have consulted their physician. It is strongly recommended that a physical fitness program be followed to prepare you physically for the mountain.

Q: What is the minimum age for participants?A: The minimum and maximum age is adventure specific, please contact us. We have had participants from 15 to 64 years old on our adventures.

Q: What’s the food like during the trek?A: Food throughout the trek is generally excellent and very well prepared. Breakfast tends to be porridge, followed by eggs and lunch consists generally of sandwiches, cheese and fruit or a hot meal. A meat dish is always provided for the evening meal (chicken or beef for example), which is accompanied by vegetables and potato/rice. It is also advised to take plenty of energy bars.

Q: What are the toilet and washing facilities like?A: One of the porters will bring a bowl of hot water to you in the morning and again in the late afternoon when you have finished your days trekking. Toilet facilities are available, however, the further up the mountain the more basic they become.

Q: What sort of trekking team do we have?A: This will normally consist of enough porters to carry all equipment and client duffle bags, a main guide, an assistant guide, a cook and the cook’s assistant. The number of porters depends on the size of the group.

Q: How safe is it?A: On all our trips your well-being is our first priority. Our travel partner’s staff constantly review every aspect of your adventure and our expert guides are fully conversant with the demands of traveling in remote regions.

Q: What sort of clothing and equipment would I need? A: You will require thermal hiking socks, gloves, warm head protection, raincoat, sunglasses and sun protection cream. Do not forget your hiking boots/running shoes and very importantly a walking stick pole. One of the most essential items of clothing is an outer jacket, it should be able to keep you warm, protect you at temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees and to keep the wind out.NOTE: Your porters have been hired to carry most of your gear.

Q: Do I need travel insurance?A: Yes, it is obligatory and your responsibility to get this and provide details to our travel partner before departure. Please note this trek reaches altitude of over 4,000 metres. For this reason, most insurance companies will insist on vetting your age and health prior to agreeing to cover you by their insurance. We would recommend that as a precautionary measure you contact your insurance company to ensure they will include cover for this type of holiday.

Q: Do I need a visa and passport?A: It is the personal responsibility of the passenger to make sure his or her passport is valid and contains the necessary visa and travel documents for his or her journey. Your passport must be valid at least six months beyond intended stay. Please refer to the pre-departure information in your registration pack.

Fundraising QUESTIONSQ: Will I be able to meet my travelling companions before we leave?A: Yes, we have two information nights scheduled prior to departure, which is a great opportunity to meet and get to know each other.

Q: Will I get support in my fundraising efforts?A: Yes, we actually put on a few fundraising events that are great fun and all you have to do is invite your family and friends we make it so easy. Plus a team representative will contact you regularly with ideas, advice, encouragement - and plenty of inspiration.

Q: What happens if we don’t reach my target?A: You will, with the right commitment and a good fundraising plan you have plenty of time and the support you need from us to reach your fundraising goal.

Q: What sort of things have people done to fundraise for our trips?A: Wine tasting, sausage sizzles, football games, lawn bowls, conferences, cook books, comedy evenings, cinema nights, clothing sales, donations from family and friends.

Q: When does the fundraising target need to be reached by?A: There are a number of payment milestones that need to be met, each adventure is different, please refer to the countdown document in the specific adventure for the actual dates.

Q: Are donations tax-deductible?

A: All of the money that goes directly to the charity over $2 is tax-deductible (providing your supporters received nothing in return for their donation) and the charity will issue your donors with a receipt.

Q: How do donors get receipts?A: When your fundraising monies are paid to the charity they will issue a tax-deductible receipt to your supporters who made a donation, providing you have provided all the relevant details.
