Hi Moms, Dads & Kidz!My name is Benny the Bee!

I started my new job atThe Kidz Digest this month.

I was selected as the“official spokesbee” for The Kidz Digest.

Why was I selected you ask?Well besides being extremely cute,

thank you very much, I’m a hardworker!Bees are social bugs that are very

organized and follow a strict set ofguidelines to get our jobs done.

We may be small, but we are very importantto big people like you. Because we help

“pollinate” flowers & plants to make themgrow and produce honey and beeswax.

That makes me very qualified to help you Kidz learn to be hardworkers, follow the rules and realize that even though you are small...you are important!

We will have lots of fun together learning and growing. You will see me throughout The Kidz Digest to help you learn new things, teach you fun games, learn to be safe and watch for dangerous situationsand I’m here to create a little Kidz Community where you can show your

funny pictures, share your drawings, tell stories or ask for advice.

Parents are encouraged to join in the fun and send inyour Kidz cute pictures, drawings, funny things

they say or do, or exemplary behavior or achievements. We will also have parenting tips and articlesfrom experts in their field on how to enrich

your children’s lives.I would also like to get your opinions on childrelated businesses and services to see if they

deserve my “seal of approval”.

Send me your suggestions on how we can makeThe Kidz Digest something both you and your

children can enjoy!

You can mail whatever you like to:1610 S. Washington

Amarillo, Texas 79102

or you can email me at: [email protected]

See you in the next issue!

February is National Children’sDental Health Month, so wewanted to see what a localdentist had to say about his jobas a dentist.

Dr. Shane Moore, with Ama-rillo Pediatric Denistry says asfor schooling he has taken tobecome a dentist, “My name is

Dr. Shane Moore D.D.S. I graduated from the University ofTexas Health Science Center at San Antonio with my Doctoratein Dental Surgery. I completed my Pediatric Specialist Resi-dency at the University of Tennessee Dental School and St. Jude’sChildren’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.”

When is comes to the goals the dentists at the Amarillo Pediat-ric Dentistry feel are important to be a good dentist and maketheir patients, parents and staff happy...they want to representthemselves, family, and staff with integrity and an openly Chris-tian faith. Provide very high quality dental care for childrenand adolescents. Provide an environment where Dr.’s staff, andparents are inspired and encouraged. Continually strive forgood communication with patients and parents, and staff. Of-fer the latest in innovation and technology. Treat each patientand parent with a legitimate concern and interest. Give a sig-nificant amount of time, money and education back to the com-munity. Prioritize care for any child in pain that needs my ser-

vice. Offer honest and friendly servicewith integrity. Treat each child as a closefriend.

Personally, Dr. Moore says, “I have threechildren, Preston, Emily and John. I liketo coach my son’s basketball team andparticipate in the children’s puppet min-istry at my church. My wife Nicole and Iare excited and proud to be apart ofthis wonderful community. My favoritecolor is green. If I were a cartoon char-acter I would be Perry the Platypus fromPhineas and Ferb because he always hasa plan.”

Artist Info: Lesley Ingham ~ I have always loved art. I have always loved creating, and I have always loved pretty things, but I had never experienced the kind of inspiration that I have now with my two precious children: Allison (3), and Kahlon (1 1/2). From the moment I knew I was expecting Alli, I began thinking of beautiful theme ideas for her nursery... and we ended up with a spring time type of theme, since her birthday is in April. Butterflies and bunnies in light pastels and sheer draperies is what I came up with. I beamed with joy each time I walked into her room! It turns out that her room matched her - light and blonde-headed, and pretty!

My Life With Seizuresby Landri Thompson

Hi, my name is Landri. I am thirteen years old, and Ilive in Texas. Currently I am going through a batteryof test because I have unexplained seizures.

The summer of 2008 I started having these episodeswhere my heart would race. They would lastanywhere from two to five minutes. This left me tiredand a little scared. My family and I just thought thatI was nervous about the upcoming school year. Iwould be going to middle school, in a differentbuilding, and lots of changes. Even though schoolhad started I kept having these episodes.

In January, we saw our family doctor. He thoughmaybe it was an arrhythmia. An arrhythmia is anirregular heartbeat, so he put me on some vitamins. We then started seeing his Physician’s Assistant.

During a later visit he witnessed one of theseepisodes. After that, he ordered a twenty-four hourEKG (a test that records your heart rate for twenty-four hours). The results came back normal. With theseresults he set up an appointment with a PediatricCardiologist. A cardiologist is a doctor specializingin the heart.

One day I came home from school complainingabout some pain in my chest. We all thought I wastoo tired. I began getting very pale and the painsstarted going into my left arm, neck and back. Theseare sometimes symptoms of a heart attack. We called

t h edoctor, and he saidto go straight to the emergencyroom.

At the ER, one doctor noticed that my eyes weredilated. These two symptoms together can be a signof drug use. Of course, that was not true. AnotherER doctor thought that my heart was weak, and thatI needed to start running two or three miles a day.We though that was ridiculous. We went home aftersix hours disappointed.

In the early summer of 2009, we went down for thecardiologist appointment. We learned that I didn’thave an arrhythmia, but my heart did race at timesfor no apparent reason, but still no diagnosis. The

cardiologist prescribed a heart medication, but therewas no improvement. My episodes continued.

We began looking up my symptoms online. That ishow we came upon the idea that these episodescould be seizures. My doctor said that could be apossibility. We did lots of research over the summer.

In August, school started. I went the first week, andthe episodes got worse. That weekend my legsstarted to twitch. By Monday I was having full bodyconvulsions. Convulsions are very scary. Convulsionsare when your body takes over and the muscles jerkand twitch uncontrollably. Some people pass out,but I don’t. However, I must be in a safe place, so Icannot go to school. A teacher comes to me. Guesswhat...I miss school!

That Wednesday we went to the emergency roombecause I was have one convulsion an hour. Theyran more test, but we would have to wait awhile forresults.

Before this had happened my doctor had scheduledan appointment with a Pediatric Neurologist (aneurologist is a doctor specializing in the brain). Theappointment however was four months away onDecember 1st. In the meantime, I got a prescriptionsfor an anti-seizure medication. I worked, I was feelingso much better.

December 1st arrived and the doctor wants moretest. On December twenty-first I will be going intothe hospital for a twenty-four hour EEG. This willmeasure my brain waves while I am having theseseizures, but I have to be completely off mymedication. Even though I have had such a hard timethese past two years I am okay. Yes, it is scary atfirst, but I know that by having all these test andthings we are getting closer to a diagnosis.

It is hard to be away from school and my friends, but I have had to come to terms with it. We are hopingthat I can go back at the beginning of the secondsemester. In a way this has been good for me. I feelthat I have become more mature, and view on lifehas changed. Now I am grateful that we are able togo to these doctors. I also find comfort in knowingthere are other children and young adults goingthrough this.

Even if you have been diagnosed, or if you are likeme and it just seems they will never find what is

wrong, keep your hopes high. It is okay to be afraid, but you have to remain calm and patient. When Ifirst started having these episodes I wasembarrassed, but you can’t help it. I feel that I havethe opportunity to help other people.

So just remember that, it is okay to be afraid. It isscary, but when you find out what is wrong theneverything will be worth it. I hope that if you haveseizures or even if you don’t , that after you readthis that you will feel more secure. By secure I meanthat you can tell yourself, “I am going to be okay”and don’t worry, your family won’t let anythinghappen to you.

Even if you have to have surgery, or something elseif seriously wrong, just remember you are not theonly one. Exactly sixty-eight percent of people withseizure disorders never discover the cause.

I hope that you learned something new, or feel betterabout what is happening in your life. I hope that bysharing my experience with seizures, others will learnsomething new and feel better about what ishappening in their lives or someone they know.
