Students should be familiar with the Interactive Whiteboard etiquette and procedures. They should be able to manipulate the board using the mouse, keyboard and touch & drag techniques on the surface of the board.

Day 1 Anticipatory set (Hook/Grabber)

• We will be exploring a great website designed to help kids search for information and find articles and pictures. It is called Kids Search. This great website is safe for kids and it is free. You don’t have to sign up to use it. It has a dictionary, encyclopedia and lots of other great resources.

• We will be using the Interactive Whiteboard to learn about all the information you can find on Kids Search. After we explore the website together a few times you can explore on your own. We will use this site for our next research project.

Procedures 35-45 min.

Students will gather on the floor in front of the Interactive Whiteboard. The majority of the children will want to actively participate. The teacher will provide enough tasks for all students to become involved. Students will sit appropriately to avoid obstructing the view of the Interactive Whiteboard. Students will be seated in rows with an isle in the center for easy access to the Interactive Whiteboard and wireless keyboard. Students will volunteer to participate at the Interactive Whiteboard while becoming familiar with the functions and educational value of INSPIRE, Kids Search. http://www.inspire.net/

Demonstration • This demonstration will include printouts of

selected topics to illustrate and guide the teacher’s demonstration of specific features of Kids Search. Student interest and interaction may require the teacher to deviate from the predetermined selections.

• Introduce the website address http://www.inspire.net/ or conduct a search for “INSPIRE.” Locate Kids Search by EBSCOhost and bookmark the site.

Set a Purpose Display the Home Page of Kids Search. Enter Appleseed and refer to the suggested results that may also be available for the word. Example: Apple seed. Ask students if they want information about apples and how they grow or the legend, Johnny Appleseed. This will help determine which results they select to explore. Explain the upcoming Power Point will help them learn how to use Kids Search to answer questions, explore the world and learn exciting new information.

Day 3

Independent Follow-up & Review 45 min. Students will gather in the computer lab seated at individual computers. Students will be directed to view the large screen. (Teacher’s Station will be equipped with a projector to show the computer screen on the large wall screen.) The teacher will review the procedures from the previous lesson using Kids Search. The students will direct the teacher to select the appropriate icons to maneuver the sites on cue. Students will follow along before completing several tasks as directed by the teacher.

Day 3 continued • Determine students comfort level with the

database by observing the students as they explore.

• Teachers can develop a scavenger hunt unique to grade level curriculum topics to assess student understanding of the data base.

Suggestions for Second Grade Research• Money. Find out where the US Mints are located and how their

security compares with Disney Land or the Kennedy Space Center.

• How Stuff Works: Compare how Tinker Toys are made compared to Legos or Lincoln Logs. Compare how each company got started.

• Look inside pictures of common objects. How is the inside of a clock different or the same as the inside of a fan?

• What exercises do athletes in baseball do compared to athletes in basketball or football or hockey?

• Weather Resources-Look at lots of clouds and see if there is a pattern between the color of the clouds before a snow storm and the color of the clouds before a rain storm?

• Find out what information an Almanac gives and then list people who would use an Almanac to do their jobs.

• Find out what special rules children in the White House MUST obey and explain one rule you disagree with and one rule you support.

Search Challenges • To promote the use of this database at all grade

levels the media specialist could prepare a list search items and questions.

• Each class would have grade level appropriate questions to answer.

• The questions would be delivered to each classroom at the beginning of the week.

• The first class to complete all the research activities accurately would display a banner outside their door until the next challenge round.
