WELCOME TO THE 2015 KICKSTART FESTIVAL! FOR THE FIFTH YEAR RUNNING, PROPEL YOUTH ARTS WA INVITES YOU TO HELP US CELEBRATE NATIONAL YOUTH WEEK.
Driven by young people with big ideas, the KickstART Festival returns to captivate your imagination with creative arts workshops, discussion forums, performances, live music, special events, activities, an emerging artist exhibition, and the KickstART Market Day, all held throughout the Perth Cultural Centre and surrounds, from April 7 – 27.
The KickstART Festival is presented by Propel Youth Arts WA in partnership with the Department of Local Government and Communities and is an initiative of It Starts With Us, National Youth Week 2015.

Explore over 60 stalls showcasing emerging artists and designers, plus an array of community groups, arts organisations, youth service providers and delicious food vendors at the KickstART Markets. Find beautiful jewellery, fashion, homewares, stationery, visual artworks and who knows what else!

AMAZE INSTALLATION Visit our aMAZE sculpture installation and get lost down the yellow brick road. Local artists Matt McVeigh and Calvin Chee enlisted the help of emerging artists Robyn Taylor, Jaccie Gillet and Nicola Flaherty - as part of our brand new KickstART mentorship program - to create a new sculptural centrepiece of KickstART Market Day, using only recycled materials!
KICKSTART WINGS For the first time in KickstART history, we are bringing to you a collaborative community art piece. Leave your mark and help create the KickstART Wings!
GIANT GAMES Use your skills to become games master of the Urban Orchard! Conquer such favourites as GIANT Jenga, Chess, Noughts & Crosses and Connect 4.
CLOWNING AROUND! Kinetica Circus Arts will be in the Urban Orchard from 11am – 3pm. Test your circus skills on their spinning plates, juggling balls, hula hoops and more!
THE ART TRAIL: STOP,STOP.STAMP! & THE SELFIE TRAIL
Get to know your local cultural institutions by taking part in The Art Trail, where you collect stamps or take selfies (hashtag #kickstartselfie) outside each Art Trail venue on the map. The Art Trail will take place throughout the KickstART Festival, so find out more under KickstART Projects, Activities & Special Events on page 9.

THE SKETCHBOOK PROJECT
The Sketchbook Project allows young people to show off their artistic skills by filling the pages of a blank sketchbook with original designs, writing, photos, illustrations, or anything else creative! Once completed, participants send their sketchbooks back to Propel, to be exhibited at The Basement Gallery @ Colosoul throughout the KickstART Festival, and then onto the Travelling Sketchbook exhibition, which will tour libraries across WA!
STORY REELS: KICKSTART SHORT FILMS PROJECT
Across all of WA, Story Reels offers young people aged 12 to 26 the opportunity to channel their inner Spielberg and create a short film or show off a mini-masterpiece they’ve already made. Story Reels will be shown on the James Street Amphitheatre big screen during KickstART Market Day on 11 April, and also at The Basement Gallery @ Colosoul throughout the Festival.
KICKSTARTISTS EXHIBITION
KickstARTISTS is an art exhibition curated by young people for young people! The National Youth Week Planning Committee have worked hard to put together an exciting, inspiring and unique exhibition by young WA artists, to be held at The Basement Gallery @ Colosoul throughout the KickstART Festival. Don’t miss these young up-and-comers!
THE ART TRAIL: STOP.STOP.STAMP! & THE SELFIE TRAIL
How well do you know your way around Northbridge? Join the Stop.Stop.Stamp! scavenger hunt (collecting stamps along the way) or snap your own additions to the Selfie Trail (hashtag #kickstartselfie) outside each institution on the KickstART Map on page 26. Remember to have the building visible in the background of your selfie!
Complete the whole trail and you can collect a special limited edition prize from the Propel Youth Arts WA office, during weekdays only.
ARTS LAW AND ORDER
Is your goal to have a successful and sustainable career in the arts? Building a successful creative practice means understanding your legal rights and responsibilities. Join Michael Tucak from Creative Legal for an information-packed session, to learn must-know details about copyright, moral rights, negotiating a good deal, and the thrills and dangers of working online.

PLAYING WITH JUNK This fun-filled workshop the Junkadelic Collective will guide you in creating a percussion instrument made completely out of recycled materials! And if that wasn’t enough, you will then get a hands-on lesson in how to make magical tunes with your junk creation in a percussion and vocal session. STAMP IT UP! Join the artists from Beau Est Mien Printing and Design, for a workshop that will introduce you to the art of making hand-carved rubber stamps! Made of rubber mounted on a wooden block, your stamps can be taken home in a muslin bag and used for hours of fun, for a range of printing activities. The KickstART Forums have been exclusively devised and organised by the National Youth Week Planning Committee. This year’s topics aim to ignite a range of insightful and interesting conversations surrounding topics important to young people today. They provide opportunities for you to inquire, connect, share, learn and have your say about topics relevant to you!
For the first time in KickstART history, our forums will be streamed online in real time. Young people living in regional WA can register, tune in online and participate over the net! Recorded forums will be archived and uploaded to propel.org.au for future viewing.

MATTERS OF THE MIND
This forum will focus on how young people can actively support themselves, their friends and family in relation to mental health. Representatives from mental health organisations as well as those with personal experiences will discuss how and where to get help, mindfulness, supporting others in need, promoting good mental health and more. GETTING PUBLISHED Perth is ablaze with young writers, creatives and innovators all searching for an opportunity to break into the publishing industry. In this unique forum, four of Perth’s own are here to speak about their careers, the world of publishing and answer your questions about breaking into the writing and publishing industry. Ranging from journalism, to creative writing, editorial and features or the world of novel writing. Come along to hear their stories of accomplishment and success in our State, WA.

PAVE YOUR WAY The Millennials are a generation marked by entrepreneurialism and innovation. We are revolutionaries simply for being the first generation in history born into the digital age. In this forum we discover that career progression holds a brand new definition for youths of today, and that success can be achieved on your own terms, literally. YOUR STATE, YOUR SAY Government represents the people but unfortunately young people are often overlooked in government planning because they’re too young to vote, and also because it’s hard for governments to speak to them directly. This forum will bring government departments together with young people to answer questions and help them guide their work, as well as giving young people the chance to have their say about the issues most important to them.

IDENTITY POLITICSUnderstanding gender and sexuality for young people is a significant component in shaping their identity. This forum aims to increase young people’s awareness on the diversity of gender identities and sexual orientation. Advocates, educators and members of the LGBTQIA community will discuss the impact of both gender and sexuality on identity covering areas such as fashion, transitioning, coming out, mental illness, feminism, acceptance and family.

In the build-up to ANZAC Centenary celebrations, the Art Gallery of Western Australia has created activities that encourage participants to reflect upon this event.
School Holiday Tours: At 10:30am each day, join AGWA’s free Volunteer Gallery Guides through the ANZAC inspired exhibit, For Love of Country.
Art Activity: From 11am to 3pm, create poppies from recycled materials. These poppies will be collected and displayed as part of a larger installation in the Gallery over the ANZAC long weekend. Donations welcome.
