Kia ora koutou, dear Parents, Whānau, and Friends,
What a fortnight of wonderful entertainment it has been! We were treated to plays by Classes 2, 3 and 7, and each one was outstanding at its own level. Congratulations to the teachers and tamariki – well
done! And a big “Thank You”, too, the numerous helpers and supporters – they couldn’t have done it without you. Class 6 had performed their splendid play “Robin Hood” earlier in the term, and we still have the Class 4 play to look forward to in week 9. Meanwhile, the teachers are also busy studying their lines for the upcoming Shepherds’ Play. If you have never been, come along this year. This is the play that keeps on giving, and it never fails to entertain!
During the last fortnight we welcomed Eden Lawson and her whānau to Class while Sage van de Vorstenbosch joined the Tui kindergarten group. Nau mai, haere mai ki a koutou.
Good news #1: Our Class 1 Teacher Svenja Donlon and her husband Seth are expecting a baby in May! Svenja will take parental leave from term 2 which means that we will be looking for a long-term reliever to cover this.
Good news #2: We are very pleased to announce that we have appointed André Ngāpō to the position of Class 1 2020 Teacher. We are letting André introduce himself – see below. André and his whānau will be looking for a house in Raumati, so let us know if you can help out.
Ngā manaakitanga, nā

Te Rā School Sports – Touch Rugby Update
Te Rā Touch Season Update Kia ora koutou. Te Rā has three teams playing in the local touch
competition this year. We started the season with a whole group practise to set the scene and get everyone familiar with each other, with the rules and some basic skills. Coach Rich also shared three concepts for us all, which are: 1. Have fun 2. Support each other 3. Try our best It is so wonderful to see the smiles on the faces of our players, to see everyone giving their all and having fun.
U10 Te Rā Tornadoes Coach Cassady, Coach Hinemoana, Manager Sharee Te Rā has their first under 10’s touch rugby team running this season. We began with a couple of children keen, no coach, no manager and not enough children to create a full team. With class 7 students - Hinemoana and Cassady raising their hands to coach, and myself to manage, we quickly had 13 class 2 and 3 students and 1 class one keen student creating a more than full team!
With 5 games having been played now and weekly practices our team has gone from strength to strength. We focus on fun number one, great team spirit and supporting each other, doing our best and being part of an awesome touch rugby wider community of kids being active, playing together and giving things a go.
Massive thanks to our coaches, Tab and Rich our coordinators, and all our parent support. U12 Te Rā Turbos Coach Rich, Manager Tab Te Rā Turbos are off to a great start, working hard on the basics and getting use to the game of touch for those newcomers. We have had some great games and are improving each week! Our focus for touch this year is to have fun, support our teammates and try our best.
A big thank you to office staff for sorting our admin, and to our
whānau support in getting our kids to and from the practices and the games. U14 Te Rā Tū Kaha Coach Elise, Manager Elan Te Rā Tū Kaha have a lot of keen and a lot of new players in the team this year. It is great to see our players enjoying the game of touch, supporting each other and improving each and every week. Some of our younger players from the U10 and U12 teams come along to watch our games and see the level of touch in the U14 grade - it is always good to have our whānau supporters as well as
our wider school supporters on the sideline too! Touch Kapiti-Horowhenua Representatives We would also like to acknowledge and congratulate three of our players who made representative teams for touch this season. - Elena Keall-Neches (U12 Girls Touch Team) - Luca Van Mills (U12 Boys Touch Team) - Cassady Van Mills (U16 Mixed Touch Team)
Well done to you all and good luck for the upcoming rep tournament.
A note to parents that if your child is enjoying touch and would like
to trial for one of the rep teams next season we'll put the flyer out again next year and can have a chat beforehand if you would like more information. Ngā mihi nui
News from the Beehive
News from the beehive It has been an eventful month in the school apiary. Unfortunately our small hive, a Langstroth hive, had been diagnosed with
American Foulbrood (AFB), a bacterial disease that infects the brood and eventually leads to the collapse of the hive. As this disease is so destructive and can easily be transferred between hives, any hive that has AFB needs to be destroyed immediately and so we had to burn the hive. This is important to keep other hives healthy. Hopefully we will have a new Langstroth hive soon. On a more positive note, our big hive, a topbar hive, is still going strong. After the old queen left with a swarm, a new virgin queen emerged and has had a successful mating flight. Now she is laying well and there is a lot of young brood in the hive. Swarming season will soon be over and the main honey flow of the year is only about a month away.

Child Car Seat Recycling in Kapiti Coast Recycling isn't limited to the paper, glass, tins and plastic you put in your recycling bin each week. In Kapiti Coast parents and caregivers can recycle their damaged, expired or unwanted child car seats through the SeatSmart programme, thus preventing highly recyclable metal and plastic from going to landfill. The cost to recycle a seat in Kapiti Coast is $10, thanks to a subsidy from the Kapiti Coast District Council. Besides keeping seats out of landfill recycling them also helps provide employment for people
who have a disability or are disadvantaged or marginalised as some of the dismantling is done by social enterprises. Kapiti Coast has a collection site at the Otaihanga Resource Recovery Facility. For more information please visit www.seatsmart.co.nz
