Police pick up Khawaja before his release

ISLAMABAD: Just a day after the issuance of his release orders by the

Rawalpindi Bench of Lahore High Court, Bhara Kahu Police again arrested

human rights activist Khalid Khawaja early on Thursday in another case.

Addressing a news conference here at the camp office of

Islamabad/Rawalpindi Press Club, Khalid Khawajas wife Shamama Khalid,

along with her mother-in-law Ume Khawaja and son Osama bin Khawaja,

accused Bhara Kahu Police of kidnapping her husband from Adiala Jail on

Thursday morning despite issuance of LHC orders for his release a day

ago. She alleged her husband was booked in a fabricated case regardingburning of a CD shop in Bhara Kahu.

Its for the fourth time that a fabricated case has been lodged against my

husband to prevent his release. We condemn such tactics by the

government and demand his release without delay, she said. Shamama

said she would move court against fresh and illegal detention of Khalid

    Khawaja.

She alleged that police misbehaved with her son Huzaifa and brother who

went to Adiala Jail to receive Khawaja Thursday morning.

She said her son submitted the LHC release orders of Khawaja to the

Adiala Jail authorities at 12 noon on Wednesday, however, the authorities

did not free him until 6:00 am on Thursday. Instead, they handed Khawaja

to Bhara Kahu Police, she alleged.

She said the original FIR filed by the Bhara Kahu police about burning ofCD shop did not carry Khawajas name, however the same was later

mentioned in the supplementary FIR illegally.

Shamama claimed her husband was in Adiala Jail on April 14 when the

    shop was torched.

Khawaja, who was used to pursue forced disappearances case in the

Supreme Court, was picked up by the secret agencies on Jan 26 this year

    on sectarian charges. staff report

Rawalpindi ATC sends Khawaja to jail

    Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday

rejected the request of the police investigating officer for extending the

physical remand of Khalid Khawaja in a case of burning CDs and

videocassettes at Bhara Kahu and sent him to Adiala Jail on judicial

    remand.

The ATC accepted for hearing a bail application of the accused and asked

the investigating officer to produce the charge sheet of this case by May 3.Investigating officer Inspector Abdul Majeed of Bara Kahu police station

moved the court to extend the physical remand of the accused for seven

more days to probe the alleged recovery of hate material from Khawajas

possession and his alleged plan to create unrest in the city.

Shaukat Siddique, defence counsel for the accused, opposed the

investigating officers plea and said that Khawaja was not involved in that

case because he had been in Faisalabad Jail when the incident took place.

He argued that police wanted to implicate Khawaja under false pretences.

On the courts inquiry, Majeed said that the police could not recover any

objectionable material from the accused because of time constraints. The

court rejected Majeeds arguments and sent the accused to Adiala Jail on

udicial remand and adjourned the hearing of the case till May 4.

An ex-employee of the ISI, Khawaja had played an active role in uniting

the relatives of missing persons. He was arrested on January 26 from his

residence and booked in a case of spreading religious hate material.
