International Day of Forests 2017 (21 March) AND World Water Day 2017 (22 March) SEMINAR on Strategies for Water Security in Bundelkhand to Meet the Challenge of Climate Change Khajuraho (M.P.): 21-23 March 2017 VENUE: Hotel Jhankar, Khajuraho (M.P.) Organised by Centre for Inland Waters in South Asia (under Pragya Education and Environment Trust, Jaipur) Jointly with the Maharaja Chhatrasal Bundelkhand University, Chhatarpur (M.P.) with support from Other Organisations Water is most critical natural resource for all kinds of socio-economic development including food security, sanitation and health. However, the climate change threatens the water resources by increasing spatial and temporal variability and the effects of rise in temperature. Strategies and approaches to management of water resources is central to adaptation to and mitigation of climate change impacts. Bundelkhand region, a low elevation, undulating plateau, interspersed with flat topped hills, lies between the Vindhyan hills in the south and a wide plain along the river Yamuna, covering parts of both MP and UP. The region is drained by several north- flowing rivers, particularly the Ken and Betwa, and other tributaries of Yamuna. However, in spite of good average annual rainfall, the region experiences frequent droughts. It experienced two consecutive years of severe drought (2014 and 2015). Recent data suggest that the rainfall has been decreasing during the past 50 years and the probability of receiving even 75% of normal rainfall is decreasing at an alarming rate. Historically, Bundelkhand relied on large number of tanks constructed by former rulers but these have now been grossly neglected. Water resources development projects, which raise serious environmental concerns and are costly and time consuming, have not yet helped the region significantly. There is an urgent need for adopting approaches and strategies for quick viable solutions to improve water availability for development and to ensure water security with climate change. Water is certainly the highest priority for the region. Scope of the Seminar The topics for discussion at the Seminar include: Forests and Water; Surface and Ground water resources of Bundelkhand; Climate Change scenario in Bundelkhand; Future changes in water availability and Water requirements of Bundelkhand; Water, sanitation and livelihoods; Agricultural systems and Growth potential in Bundelkhand; Water Security and Food Security; Traditional Water management; Repair, Renovation and Restoration of Tanks Expected Outcome The discussions focused on water management in Bundelkhand would help formulate realistic and actionable recommendations which can be implemented in the region. Participation Participation is open to all those interested in the subject but with a focus on management of water resources. Interested individuals from universities, colleges and research institutions and Government Departments, NGO representatives etc. should inform about their participation by email to [email protected] latest by 18 March 2017. They must make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation. Participants, other than the invitees, will be required to pay a Registration Fee (Rs 1200) to the Pragya Education & Environment Trust, Jaipur. It can be paid in cash at the Seminar Venue at the time of Registration.
