Letter from the Editor: Hello Southwest District Key Clubbers! My name is Audrey Schreiner and I am a junior at Cienega High School in Vail, Arizona. I am currently the Lieutenant Governor for the Catalina Division. Key Club is my passion and one of my goals was to increase communication so here I am writing to you! I am excited to present to you the first issue of the second volume of Key to the Southwest. I would like to thank all of my fellow board members for submitting the articles for this newsletter and all of the wonderful adults, family, and friends who support me on a daily basis! I look forward to hearing what all of you have to say about this issue. Remember to sign up for DCON and the online versions of the Key to the Southwest! Letter from the Governor: I am absolutely elated to be serving as the Southwest District Governor this year. I‘m currently a senior at Lake Havasu High School in the beautiful Lake Havasu City, Arizona. My Key Club journey began my freshman year and quickly developed into a passion. Key Club is something special. We all know that. We see it, we feel it, and we hear it every day. Key Club isn't just a high school organization dedicated to serving our homes, schools, and communities. It's a family. A family that grows through compassion, leadership, inclusiveness, and care. My goals this year are to Strengthen K-Family Bonds, Boost Membership, Close the Gap, and to Push for Passionate Service. And as a family, we must see to it that together we accomplish these goals. This year will be what you make it. Take risks. Open doors. Have fun. Whatever you want out of this year, you can get with dedication, drive, and faith. Don't be afraid to try the unthinkable. We can do this. Together. -Riley Jandrew

Letter from the Secretary/Treasurer: My name is Eli Barnett and I am your District Secretary-Treasurer. I am currently a senior at Marana High School. My free time is spent running (yes I love to run), working at Starbucks and preparing for college. I have been a member of Key Club all four years of my high school career and am nearing my 500-service hour mark! I am super eager to start working with each and every one of you. I have high expectations of myself in this position and hope to make all of you proud. With that being said we as a District are a team and must work accordingly. I thank you for your service, which has grown The Southwest District to 6,000 members! Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. -Eli Barnett

District Convention 2014 was an astounding success. Key Club members from all over the southwest traveled to Tucson, Arizona to meet and elect their new district board, as well as raise money for the ELMINATE Project. Now it’s time to start preparing for this coming DCON 2015!

DCON Recap 2014

ICON Recap 2014

International Convention is a gathering of Key Clubbers from all across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean where students elect the Key Club International Board for the upcoming year, share service project and fundraising ideas, learn about new charities and organizations, all while having fun and making unforgettable memories. This past year, ICON was held in Anaheim, California, July 2-6. There were a wide variety of workshops to attend including ones about icebreakers, the Youth Opportunities Fund, public speaking, and the major emphasis projects. Chris Bashinelli, the actor and current host, founder, and producer of Bridge the Gap TV was invited to share his story and eye-opening experiences from traveling. Additionally, Matt Mattson, the co-founder and president of Phired Up Productions came out to give a motivational speech and to rekindle excitement for the year ahead. After listening to many speeches in caucuses and making some tough decisions, students casted their votes and the International Board was elected: Maria Palazzolo, the 2014-2015 Key Club International President, Kevin Zhang, the International Vice president, along with many international trustees including our own Renisha Daley, the trustee assigned to our Southwest District as well as the Nebraska-Iowa District and Montana District. Overall, ICON 2014 in Anaheim was such an amazing experience, and if you missed it or want to experience ICON for yourself, you can join us in Indianapolis, Indiana this summer, June 25-28.

The Eliminate Project 2014! With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and

UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of

nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer

repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

www.theeliminateproject.org

Hello Southwest District,

Jump to Eliminate was an amazing event that

helped raise money for the Eliminate Project,

giving mothers a vaccine and a healthy baby in

time for Christmas. I want to say a special thank

you to of you who showed up and/or advertised

this fundraiser. We have until July of 2015 to

eliminate MNT (Maternal Neonatal Tetanus).

Please remember that every $2 raised is the life of

a mother and all of her future children that have

saved thanks to your hard work.

Key Leader is a spectacular weekend event, held all over the world. During this weekend you expand your knowledge on leadership, create memories that last a lifetime, and get to know the members of the Southwest district. While many Key club members attend Key Leader it is also for any young leader looking to further their leadership skills. The weekend focuses mainly on service leadership. Key leader participants, use their knowledge gained from this weekend to better their homes, schools and communities. The weekend contains valuable lectures, small and large group workshops, and team- building activities. The Key leader program is built on five essential principles called Keys to Excellence. The Keys of Excellence are personal integrity, personal growth, respect, building community, and the pursuit of excellence. Anyone who participates in the Key Leader program will never forget the experiences gained during this weekend. The next Key Leader event in the Southwest District will be February 13-15, 2015, at the YMCA Triangle Y Ranch in Oracle, Arizona. I can’t wait to see you all there!

Fall Rally Fall Rally, assembled by Carefree Kiwanis, is a weekend leadership

camp dedicated towards allowing young adults to hone their abilities as leaders. Located in Prescott, Arizona on Camp Sky-Y, a chilly forest environment with log cabins, mess halls, and surprisingly scrumptious camp lunches, is the home of over 100 teens for a weekend of a lifetime. This year's Fall Rally has been a triumphantly successful one: inspiring teenagers to take charge in accomplishing team-based objectives and expressing oneself to others without fear. Want to join in the fun! Contact one of the board members for more information!

Tempe High school hosted its second Eliminate Walk in which students convened to participate in various activities around the track. At the completion of each lap, whether a three legged race, a game of red-light-green-light, or blind folded trust lap, students were given a bead. These beads were added to their piece of yarn, which ultimately created a necklace, representing the number of laps completed and the overall contribution to Project Eliminate. In addition, the South Mountain LtG was pied in the face, for Eliminate, of course! All the proceeds were donated to support Project Eliminate!

Corona’s officers traveled up to Prescott for an officer’s retreat. At this retreat, the club officers got a chance to experience the emotional side of key club and bond with one another. The retreat was held at a firehouse. Consequently, the firefighters got a chance to talk to the Key Clubbers and compliment them on their outstanding work and contributions to the organization. What a great way to strengthen bonds between a school board!

McClintock has established a constant connection with the Lost Our Home Pet Foundation. The foundation strives to give pets a home after families could no longer support them. McClintock Key Clubbers constantly give community service to benefit the cause. At the foundation, Key Clubbers get to interact with the pets in many ways: playing with and feeding cats, as well as taking dogs for walks. Key Club has no boundaries in which it benefits, even animals are being served through Key Club. Keep it up McClintock!

New Mexico School For The Blind And Visually Impaired of Alamogordo NM The best part about Key Club is that Key Club is so diverse. No matter who you or where you’re from you fit into Key Club. As different as everyone involved is, all key clubbers share a love for one thing- helping others, but how we do so varies greatly. To some, giving back is easy, to some it is necessary, and to some it is simply their passion. At the Key Club of Alamogordo’s New Mexico School For The Blind And Visually Impaired (NMSBVI), it is the student’s passions. NMSBVI is a school ranging from pre-K to 12th grade where students go not to just learn statistics and biology, but also about themselves. While most students are residential, they are typically enrolled on a short 1-2 year time frame, later returning to their home school. For twelve years now, NMSBVI has maintained a Key Club. Michala J Wadley currently advises it, and the president is Aaron Kysar. The school has 12 dues paying members, which makes up 1/3 of the schools population!! Their Key Club participates in a huge variety of events from cleaning up their own community, to supporting other visually impaired schools out of state. The Key Club of the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired reminds us that no matter what life throws our way we must always give back.

How to participate? 1 Find a leader. Identify an advisor, teacher, Kiwanis

member or community leader to serve as an event organizer.

2 Register your event. Ask the event organizer to create a local organizer account and register your event on the HTFG website under “Event Manager.

3 Plan and promote your event. You’ll find helpful tools and templates on the HTFG website.

5 Host your event and have fun! Email questions to ht&[email protected]

Hershey’s Track and Field’s main goal is to reach out to children, and encourage physical fitness! Kids are encouraged to come together to beat personal records. To come out onto the track and get active while having fun!

Maybe your school could hold its very own Hershey’s Track and Field Day?

Children’s Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization that strides itself to raise awareness and money for children in hospitals around the nation. All CMN Hospitals contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs and provide health care for children whose parents can’t afford to pay.

How to give back! Think of any way to raise money

for the cause! Here is one idea to begin with! Brainstorm with your clubs and create your own way to give back!

**Stalling for Spare Change: The more money the school raises, the longer class is stalled for that day. So classes will be delayed 1 second for every $.50 raised. If the school raises $1,000, that is 2,000 seconds (33 minutes and 33 seconds).

How Key Club Helps! Key club began supporting and fundraising for Children’s Miracle Network in 1997. Now hundreds participate each year to give back to children in need.

ELIMINATE

ELIMINATE is Kiwanis International and UNICEF joining forces to Eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus.

Imagine you or a family member giving birth; when your precious baby is born they suffer painful convulsions and are sensitive to touch, light and sound. They only live for about a week and spend this week in utter pain. This disease is completely curable, but the mother’s suffering do not have the medical resources to take action. It takes $1.80 to save a mother at risk. Maternal Neonatal Tetanus affects the lives of 60,000 babies and a significant amount of women every year.

In order to eradicate MNT over 100 million mothers and their babies must be immunized; it will take 110 million dollars to do this.

So far Key Club has raised: $2,801,290.21

March of Dimes March of Dimes is an organization focused on working to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Not only does March of Dimes provide educational resources, but they also support families affected by infant health problems. Many children face the issue of being born premature. 1 out of every 8 babies are born prematurely and over half a

million babies are born prematurely every year! Premature birth can lead to a lifetime of illness or even death. Starting its support of March of Dimes in 1938, Key Club focuses on helping March of Dimes through fundraisers and awareness programs. By holding walks, dances and other events, Key Club has been an advocate to the cause as they earn money, educate the public and give hope to families in

need.

Beads of Courage Beads of Courage provides assistance to more than 60,000 sick children facing life threatening illnesses and their families. This takes place in over 250 hospitals throughout the United States, along with six other countries. Beads provide an intimate and innovative arts-in-medicine supportive care program. The beads are given to the kids, but they represent what the child has gone through in their treatment journey. Some beads represent hair loss while others represent chemo. We can help by making strength bracelets for the kids or packaging beads. Key Club

organizes fundraiser in order to donate money along with informing the public of this organization.

20 Need A Break? Have Some Fun!

Page 21: Key to the southwest january edition (1)

21

Feeling like you’re in one of those Key Club slumps, where you feel like Key Club has lost its appeal? No worries! Here are five tips to stay on top of things, and ensure that your passion for both Key Club and service stays strong and stands firm:

1. Voice your opinion: You have a voice—use it! Key Club is in NO way just about listening to the officers. Oftentimes, members lose motivation to serve because they feel as though they have no say or part in decision-making. This, however, is a common misconception. Speak your mind, and watch great things unfold before your very eyes; you will definitely not be sorry for devoting yourself to this awesome club.

2. Make more friends: Key Club is the largest high school student-lead organization in the entire world! This gives you no excuse to be by yourself. Making friends in Key Club will not only give you people you can serve with (which is awesome—think of how much fun you have serving when by yourself, and then multiply it by two or ten or ten thousand! That’s A LOT of fun), but will ensure you long lasting friendships that you will thank Key Club for many times over. Having friends that share your passion for service will help you maintain your love for Key Club, and will diminish any doubts you have in your love for Key Club.

3. Remember why you started: It’s understandable that you will have days when Key Club is just too much for you; you are, after all, a busy adolescent who has to juggle Key Club with sports, classes, homework, and other numerous extracurricular activities. When you feel like Key Club is just too overwhelming for you, remember to take a step back, take a deep breath, and remember why you joined Key Club in the first place, and why you chose to maintain your membership in this amazing organization. You may or may not have joined Key Club for your love of service, or just to enhance your college applications, and to be honest, either reason is completely okay. Why you joined Key Club is important, but it definitely is not as important as the fact that you have stayed in the club for as long as you have been. Remember how far you’ve come, and tell yourself that you can only keep progressing; this definitely helps when you feel like Key Club just isn’t as appealing as it once was.

4. Keep it fun: Key Club’s core values of caring, character building, leadership, and inclusiveness. What does this have to do with keeping the fun in Key Club, you ask? Well, when all values have been put into action, you will find that you can never truly lose the fun in anything you do regarding Key Club. When other members, as well as yourself, learn to care for and include other members, take the lead in making risks that can benefit the majority, and build character along the way, you will realize that you have had more fun that you thought was possible in the entire history of mankind. The Southwest District Board dares you to try it out yourself! We guarantee that you will never fall out of love with Key Club.

How to stay motivated:

Page 22: Key to the southwest january edition (1)

22 5. Make a difference: In the world of today, it is all too easy to become

consumed in the daily tasks you have as a member of society. In a short amount of time, Key Club can just be one of those organizations that you have just found does not produce the same results that you had once received, which makes you less motivated to stay in the club. When this happens, think about one of the main reasons Key Club was ever invented: so that a not so average kid like yourself is capable of changing the world and making a difference. Key Club gives you the opportunity to change what you thought would never be possible, had you attempted to make the change you wanted to see by yourself. It’s hard to make a difference when you are the only person who wants the change; it is, however, exponentially easier when you have a magnitude of others who want this same change as you. Key Club helps you help the world; isn’t that plenty of reason to want to stay motivated in your Key Club endeavors?

Now, I will be the first (and definitely not the last) to admit that staying in Key Club as an active member is hard. But I will be the first (and most certainly not the last) to also say that you reap a lot more than you sow when you invest your time, efforts, and soul into Key Club. You’ll find that as long as you stay dedicated to Key Club, Key Club will definitely stay dedicated to making your efforts visible and known by the rest of the world.

24

Break your work into little steps – Break the task down to lessen the sense of being overwhelmed. Once you start to enjoy a small accomplishment or two, you will be more likely to finish.

Change your working environment - When doing schoolwork, choose wisely where and with whom you are working. Repeatedly placing yourself in situations where you don’t get much done and are easily distracted– such as “studying” in your bed, at a café or with friends – can actually be a kind of procrastination. Create a detailed schedule with deadlines - Break down your project (see tip #1), then create an overall timeline with specific deadlines for each small task. This way, you know you have to finish each task by a certain date. Get a buddy to help you stay focused – Have them encourage you to stay on task and help you when you need it. Remove your distractions – Although it may seem that you need to walk the dog or find out if penguins have knees, you’re probably just distracting yourself from getting your work done. Put your phone on silent and hide your temptations to get your wok done. Give yourself short, planned breaks – Set a timer for ten minutes and take a break. Do whatever it is you’ve been daydreaming about so that the temptation is removed once you go back to work. Just be sure to follow through with your deadline rather than ignoring it when your alarm finally goes off. Create a To-Do list – Make a smart to-do list by including only the items you’re avoiding, not the ones you know you’ll do anyway. Then, set deadlines for yourself. Make your intentions public – This will add pressure, but for some of us, avoiding embarrassment is the mightiest motivator Sit down and just get it done - At the end, it boils down to taking action. You can do all the strategizing, planning and hypothesizing, but if you don’t take action, nothing’s going to happen. Also, the sooner you get things done, you can spend more time performing Key Club activities!
