Key Information

This episode starts in 1943 in Montgomery, Alabama, USA. A young, weary African American lady called Rosa Parks is verbally and physically abused by a white bus driver.

12 years later, the Doctor and her human friends arrive in Alabama. The travellers soon realise that Alabama in the 1950s is not a safe place for some people.

In their race to ensure history plays out as it should, our friends meet key members of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, including Martin Luther King Jr.

Rosa Parks had encounters with the same bus driver, James Blake, in 1943 and 1955. In 1943, Blake told Rosa Parks to get off the bus and he drove off without her. He was also driving the bus the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in 1955.

Emmett Till, who Rosa Parks mentions when she first meets the Doctor and her companions, was a 14-year-old boy who was visiting family in 1955 when he was killed for talking to a white woman in a shop.

After her stand, life continued to be hard for Rosa Parks. Both she and her husband lost their jobs and were unable to find other work. For many years, they lived with very little money.
