The attractivenessof the Landes economy
Despite the constraints of the current economic climate, the Landes economy is performing well ; near the sea and the forest, leading companies led by particularly dynamic managers and teams, are developing on their markets. Our territory is known for its great attractiveness increased by its authentic asset of space. This natural asset is now reinforced by a modern communication infrastructure network on the number one axis for European North-South exchanges. This latest edition of “Key Figures” aims to share this statistical data and has the ambition of contributing to the outreach of the Landes. English, Spanish and German versions of this document are being published with the intention of convincing new enterprises to establish themselves here. The Landes has a genuine future ahead and you will realise, on reading these “Key Figures” that entrepreneurs are contributing to building it.

Location and infrastructures
The Landes benefits from a unique asset: space. With its 9,243 km2, the department is the second largest in France. The territo-ry has a particulary efficient road network.
The new A65 motorway linking Bordeaux, Mont de Marsan and Pau reinforces the motorway diagonal between the Spanish border, Dax, Mont de Marsan and Agen.
The widening to 2x3 lanes of the A63 mo-torway linking the North of Europe to Spain and North Africa via the Landes usefully completes this network.
The extension, in the south of Bordeaux, of the South-Atlantic High Speed Train Line to Spain opens up tremendous opportunities for the Landes, with the perspective of a new high-speed line serving 2 new train stations.

Sharing a frontier with Spain and also having its own coastline, the Landes is situated in the corridor which constitutes the principal axis for trade between the North and South of Europe.
On average, 138,700 trucks and cars cross the Franco-Spanish border daily. Of these, 37% cross on the Atlantic side.
211 million tonnes of goods are traded between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe, of which 47% travels by road. This traffic has grown by 60% since 2001.
The Atlantic facade accounts for 53% of trade traffic, of which half travels by road (compared with 33% in 2001).
Transport and logistics
Between 2006 and 2011, the value of international trade transiting through the Landes more than doubled. Today, it amounts to 4.64 billion euros. Transport with Spain and Portugal alone represents more than a third of this trade. A quarter concerns Germany, Netherlands, Luxem-bourg, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
The road is the favoured means of trans-port, with 67.2% of total value, before sea and air (both with 16.4%).

Average yearly growth rate 2006/2012

Demographic Boom
All of the territory benefits from these demographic dynamism.
398,000 inhabitants in the Landes
There are 397,766 inhabitants in the Landes, representing 12% of the Aquitaine popula-tion. Demographic growth is far superior to regional and national averages.
The population growth rate (+1.48% annually since 2006) is three times higher than the national average. This rate places the Landes first in the Aquitaine departments and fifth in France.
Source : INSEE 2012
This vitality is essentially due to a very positive net migration (+1.2% on average, annually, compared to +0,9% in Aquitaine and +0.5% in France), due to the arrival of active young adults. This recent phenome-non makes the Landes in proportion to its population the second most attractive department of France along with Corsica, Gers and Aude.
