BUSINESS LISTINGS

A standard business entry in Key British Enterprises includes nearly thirty pieces of information. These are listed below. However it is not always possible to collect every piece of information. For instance sales turnover and profit figures may not be available or there may be no parent company or export markets. To show the incidence and quality of each data element a percentage figure is given in the table below, which indicates the number of business records that have the particular data element. This provides you with further insight into the data that you have at your fingertips. % % DUNS Number 100 Export Indicator 19 Full legal name 100 Export markets 16 Headquarters address 100 Date of formation 96 Telephone number 92 Legal status 92 Fax number 42 Company registration number 87 Website address 32 Issued capital 81 Location of branches 44 Principals’ names 97 Line of business 100 Number of employees 72 Trading style 25 Sales turnover 54 UK SIC codes 99 Export sales turnover 13 US SIC codes 100 Profit figure 67 Parent company 55 Bankers 62 VAT number 23 Auditors 75 Net worth 83 Working Capital 72

Key British Enterprises – Overview

How to use Key British Enterprises:SIC Indexes

For indexing purposes Key British Enterprises uses the 1972 US Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code system. However the UK SIC Codes appear as data elements in the main entry ensuring that no information is omitted.

SIC Codes are a vital tool in any business research. Market researchers and advertisers rely on them to pinpoint the kinds of business they want to reach. When economists study business segments they use the SIC Code to identify and compare industries - especially when they are analysing changes or trends in business and the economy. Job hunters use SIC’s to identify appropriate or interesting prospective employers. Finally SIC Codes are used for hard copy and computer assisted searches in business research everywhere. The letters N.E.C. may appear in the business description, these occur when a full descriptive business operation has not been identified. N.E.C. refers to Not Elsewhere Classified.

US SIC Codes divide all economic activity into ten major groups. These business segments are represented by the first two digits of the SIC Codes:

Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing 01-09 Wholesale Trade 50-51 Mining 10-14 Retail Trade 52-59 Construction 15-17 Finance, Insurance & Real Estate 60-67 Manufacturing 20-39 Business Services 70-79 Transportation, Communication 40-49 Social Services 80-97 & Public Utilities & Public Administration

Each line of business is categorised within one of these ten divisions and assigned a code. The first two digits of this code describe the general line of business. The third and fourth digits pinpoint a specific business activity, e.g.

22 Manufacturing - Textile mill products 227 Manufacturing - Floor coverings 2272 Manufacturing - Tufted carpets, rugs

Key British Enterprises and other D&B directories are cross referenced by US SIC Code.

To find the right US SIC Code, simply turn to the alphabetical index in volume 4

Alternatively, if you need an explanation of a particular US SIC Code, it may be found in the numerical index in volume 4

Alphabetical Section

A full business entry will appear as follows:

Volumes 1-3 of Key British Enterprises list Britain’s top 50,000 companies alphabetically.

The following alphabetisation conventions have been used:

ACRONYMS. Businesses whose names comprise initials appear at the beginning of the relevant alphabetical system, e.g. N C R Ltd. appears before National Freight Co. Ltd., but where they appear as Ncr they are alphabetically listed.

SURNAMES. Where a company name consists of a person’s name it will be listed under the christian name, e.g. Thomas H. Loveday Ltd. appears under ‘T’.

BUSINESS NAMES STARTING WITH ‘St.’ are all listed as if the word ‘Saint’ was spelt out in full, e.g. St. Austell Brewery Co. Ltd. appears before Sandvik Ltd.

BUSINESS NAMES STARTING ‘THE’ are listed according to the next word in the business name, e.g. The Boots Co. PLC appears under ‘B’.

NUMERICAL ENTRIES. Businesses whos names begin with a number or symbol are listed at the start of Volume 1.
