Description

Route Number generally consists of a prefix (generally alphabetic characters written in upper cases), a number and, in some cases, a suffix.

The prefix (= alphabetic character(s)) and the numeral can possibly be separated by a blank ( ), a hyphen (-), an asterisk (*),..., but they are never separated by a slash. In some cases the numeral of a route number is followed by a suffix.

E.g. E17N-IIISS 248N137*dD54e. The first alphabetic character(s) of a route number contained in

Route Number refers to the transportation network to which the route belongs. These alphabetic characters can differ for different countries. E.g. N1 (Australia) refer to a national route.

General Capturing Rules

Route Number of a Road Element representing an abstract topological connection inside an Enclosed Traffic Area shall be captured as the Route Number of the Road Elements joining the Enclosed Traffic Area. There is continuation of Route Number inside an Enclosed Traffic Area.

A Route Number on a small Slip Road is not necessary. Certain Route Number gaps can occur if they represent the real

world situation.

Description

Route Number Type shall be used for display purposes: the types will be used for displaying Route Number icons and to filter Route Numbers for small-scale maps.

Route Number Type reflects the road sign, used by an official authority, to indicate its Route Numbers. A type represents the characteristics of the signpost. Route Number Type is a functional differentiation between signs, based upon the color of the characters and signs, the shape and the framework.

The Route Number Type will correspond with a number, which reflects the country depending situation.

General Capturing Rule

Route Number Type shall be captured for the most important Route Number, as mentioned in the reference list provided in “Route Number Shields” in next slide.

The Reference List indicates that the decisive factor the Route Number prefix is. Exceptions are possible.

E.g.1. Type 4 in Australia indicates ‘State Highway’ with prefix S.
