Most of these settings have limited numbers of other children and rightly so. However, when children reach school age and attend a primary school setting, a huge social learning curve begins for them. Not only are they mixing with different children that they have to get to know, but they are meeting new adults. They will be interacting with their class teacher as well as all the other teachers they have specialists’ lessons with. Whilst all this is happening they will also be learning a great number of social skills by just simply playing in the school yard at break times. What skills I hear you ask? Firstly, they will be learning how to be a good friend to these new acquaintances, how to play games by the rules, how to negotiate and how to appreciate the ideas of others. Sharing, taking turns and being patient while waiting for their time on the play equipment are also skills they will have to adopt. Again, these are skills that will develop over time and need to be re-visited constantly. Teachers and teacher aides are on duty in the playground- five adults are out in the yard at Kew PS at any one time during these breaks. These professions not only provide a duty of care but they also help the students of all ages negotiate through any issues that arise. They model to the students, conflict resolution strategies and provide support for those students who need ideas about resilience. The school yard is a wonderful learning opportunity for all children so I have personal plea for all parents- please do not limit your child’s opportunities to grow as a social being by banning him/her from playing with different children. Let’s not limit their opportunities to learn acceptance, patience, negotiation skills, cooperation as well as resilience. RockKew Wrap-up: I can't thank Sue Friend enough for all her work pulling together the RockKew gig at the QPO last Friday night. In

the end about 110 people pitched in to make it a fantastic night of revelry, dancing and (I have been told by reliable

sources) gentle misbehavior all in the good cause otherwise known as a sandpit relocation! Lots of people (Suzie

Clarke, Cait Mullins, Emma Moore, Jacqui Tomlins) helped in other ways, such as spruiking and trybooking

management and general encouragement so thank you to them too. A special thanks to those of you who purchased

tickets knowing you couldn't attend on the night - your support of this cause is really appreciated, as is your

spirit. Finally, a big thank you to those of you who ate and drank altogether far too much on the night so that the

minimum spend was achieved thereby ensuring that all ticket sales will end up in the sandpit - great effort you

greedy dancing machines! Anyone who would still like to donate to the sandpit cause can do so at the office.

Fathers Day Breakfast - Thursday 30th August: Prep Parent Helpers Needed The Fathers Day Breaky will start at 7:30am with a delicious menu of choc croissants, yoghurt & cereal cups, fresh

fruit, proper coffee, egg & bacon rolls and juice (all for $10 adults & $5 kids) so get your trybookings in asap so you

can share some special time with your kids. Attention all PREP PARENTS - Sue, Emma & Prue really need your

help with food prep and serving from 6-9am (or part thereof) on the actual morning of the 30th so please contact

Emma Rush on 0406513544 or [email protected] if you can help. Trybooking.com/BUUE

Fathers Day Stall - Thursday 30th August: Year 4 & 6 Parent Helpers Needed Don't forget the Fathers Day Stall on the same day. Classes will be rostered to come to the stall for a few minutes

during the day and choose something special for their Dads. Prices range from $1 to $10 and gifts, as always, will be

beautifully presented ready for Sunday morning. This is a seriously easy and worthwhile solution to Fathers Day

shopping! Attention YEAR 4 & 6 PARENTS, please please please help Joanna and Maria make this event a success

by offering an hour or two of your time to help with wrapping the presents from 9.00am -3.00pm on Monday 27th

and manning the stall from 8.30am-2.00pm on Thursday 30th. Please contact Joanna on [email protected] if

you can help.

Peppercorn BBQ and Bush Dance - Friday 7th December after school Stay tuned for news about the end of year Peppercorn BBQ and Bush Dance,

which will be our next and final big KPS social event for 2012.

Finally QPO (cnr of High & Cotham) were wonderful to deal with for the

RockKew event and generously agreed to lower their fees when our numbers

were down. It is because of this that all ticket proceeds were able to be forwarded

to the KPS sandpit fund so please support QPO in return - they're a real family

friendly meal option in the junction area and would be a great Father’s Day lunch

venue.

Busy times!

Cheers, George

Thank you

Thank you to all the wonderful parent helpers who assisted with the Prep, Years 1

and 2 on their excursion to Myuna Farm. This was very much appreciated by the

Prep and Year 1 and 2 teachers.

Dancing Queens!

It’s not often these days that you get the chance to dance; once in a blue moon in fact. There was time – before

kids – when pretty much every Friday and Saturday you’d be heading into town for an evening of clubbing. You

didn’t have to be any good at it – I never was – you just had to drink enough to take the edge off, and wait for

Abba to get things started. Was there ever anything that compelled you to the dance floor more than Dancing

Queen?

So, last Friday night Sarah and I dusted off our dancing shoes and walked to the QPO for RockKew, the school

fund-raiser for the year. The aim of the event was to raise money to fix up the outside play areas; to build a new,

decent sandpit at the end of the oval with shade-cloths and digging machines, and to resurface the old area for a

new basketball court and hoops.

The lovely ‘Stamps room’ upstairs at the QPO filled up gradually and everyone managed to have a conversation

that wasn’t interrupted by a small child falling off the monkey bars, a demand for food or a request for an im-

promptu play-date. After an hour, my toes started to tap quietly, but with no sign of Abba I thought I’d just check

in with the DJ. We were listening to Getting Into The Groove music, he informed me, which was all well and

good, but I did just want to point out that the demographic of the room was, well…how could I put it…old, and

possibly past its Groove. I hear you, he said. 70s and 80s disco on its way.

And there it was – suddenly, gloriously – the Abba medley working its magic once again. Kew mums rushed to the

dance floor and from that moment on it was never empty. Annie Lennox, Gloria Gaynor, The B52s, Lionel Ritchie

– enough to warm the heart of any Baby-boomer. Gradually, the Dads joined in too and the evening kicked off.

There was a Tassie-two-step, a little European swing, and some disco divas who were clearly making up for lost

time. And, really, how often do you get to see the State Minister for Health slipping off his jacket and getting

down on the dance floor?

And just when everyone was sated with nostalgia, DJ Rutherford switched to a more recent set. There was Pink

(who is really the Annie Lenox of our kids’ generation), ‘That funny Gaga Lady’ (as she is affectionately called by

our Preppie), and Maroon 5’s, Moves Like Jagger (is Jagger a real-true life person, Mama?)

Oh, yes, Sweetheart, he certainly is!

And I won’t say that by the end of the night there were open bottles of champagne being passed around the tables,

just that everyone had enjoyed a well-earned night off from the kids and had clearly found their Groove.

So a huge Thank-you to Sue, George and the PTA team for organising the night, and I hope we went some way

towards raising enough money for the hoops and sand-pit. I know that’s the primary purpose of these events, but I

think they’re important for other reasons too. They remind us that we’re part of a great community and that

supporting and celebrating our school is really important. It was an excellent night; as the kids would say: Epic!

FATHER’S DAY STALL Thursday the 30th of August

The annual PTA Father's Day stall is taking place next Thursday. We have a wonderful selection of gifts, all of them wrapped and great value!

Prices range from $1 to $10. The children absolutely love being able to choose

special gifts for their fathers in this familiar and safe environment. Classes will visit the stall briefly during the day between 9am and 1pm.

Please remember, the stall is not just a fundraising endeavour, but is aimed at providing a convenient and cheap opportunity for the children to choose their

parent a gift – and they absolutely LOVE doing this! It provides them with a lot of pleasure and happily, provides us parents with a convenient solution.

Happy Father's Day to all!

Before School / After School Care Program Program Update Hello everyone and welcome to week 6, This week is book week and the children arrived dressed as their favourite characters. Some amazing costumes were worn, well done everyone! On Monday was PUPCAKE DAY and we are raising money for the RSPCA, the children are making pupcakes to be sold for a gold coin donation. Can you help us raise money for a good cause? Please? We will be running the fundraiser until the end of the week. We are also getting close to Father’s Day. If there are any parents who wish to join us next week to celebrate Father’s Day, we will be having a pancake breakfast on Friday 31

st August at 8am. This week we have planned around the ideas from the children on their likes and dislikes. We like to

plan at least 2 craft and 2 sporty activities per session, at the bare minimum, that are child initiated. Also, I would like to ask if any families have suggestions to improve our program please drop in and have a word to staff, all feedback, good or bad, is welcomed.

BREAKING NEWS ….......BREAKING NEWS ….......BREAKING NEWS ….......BREAKING NEWS ….......BREAKING NEWS ….......BREAKING NEWS

NEXT FRIDAY BEFORE SCHOOL CARE IS HAVING ‘PANCAKES FOR DADS’ but EVERYONE IS WELCOME. There will be blue, pink, yellow, green and traditional pancakes. Science week was an inspiration to the children coming up with

different coloured pancakes. (Don’t worry dads, they look gross but taste yummy).

I would like to keep this as an open invitation to the families of OSHClub children, if everyone could possibly donate any empty glass jars with or without lids, old newspapers, children's books, cardboard, paper, old magazines, wool, fabric scraps and anything else that is recyclable, even plastic drink bottles from soft drinks. A HUGE THANKS TO THE FAMILIES WHO ARE BRINGING IN RECYCLABLES :) If you have any questions or queries please call the program on 0400 394 489, alternatively feel free to pop into the program between the hours of 7:00 – 9:00am and 3:00 – 6:30pm and talk to one of our staff (Remembering that between 3:30 and 4pm is our busiest time and we might not be able to assist immediately). If you would like to book your child/ren into before or after care please log on to www.oshclub.com.au and follow the prompts to enrolling (Children MUST be enrolled to use the service). We hope to see you soon at OSHClub. Come and join in on the fun!! OSHClub Staff
