Kern River Valley information

Dear Kern River Courier,In the past several years I have enjoyed the Kern River Courier. Even

though I live elsewhere, it has provided me with such small town comfort, humor, compassion, and just plain ole info about your community, cast ofcharacters and ongoing events.

I have to say, the thing I have missed visually this particular year, how-ever, is the photography of one Murdoc Douglas. I hope to see more of histake on life and events and beautiful scenery that make up the Kern Riverarea. His photos have a particular artistic bent.

Otherwise, keep up the good work.Your faithful subscriber,Diana SaidPalm Desert(Ed. note: Thanks for the letter, Diana. Murdoc has been a bit under the

weather lately. We hope to have more pictures from him soon. In the mean-time, the above is a previously unpublished Murdoc photo taken a few weeksago.)

This modified ride is owned by Bob Weaver of Wofford Heights, and wasspotted in Kernville a few weeks ago. What was the engine compartment(the engine is in the back) is now a barbecue grill, and a stuffed animal isshown on it as a joke. The Kern River Valley is chock full of vintage carenthusiasts (the cars are vintage and so are the enthusiasts!)

PICKS OF THE WEEK"The Music Never Stopped" (PG) --

This is an uplifting family drama forpeople who really love their music. After being separat-ed for 20 years,Henry Sawyer (J.K.Simmons) is reunit-ed with his sonGabriel (Lou TaylorPucci) under grimcircumstances --Gabriel has a braintumor that hasrobbed him of hisability to form newmemories. Determined to have a realconversation with his son, Henryfinds a therapist who discovers thatmusic can awaken something inGabriel and give him a chance tohave meaningful conversations again.

Those who can connect to themusic or the strained relationship willbe taken on a dramatic ride, pilotedby an astounding performance by J.K.Simmons -- an actor who you havedoubtlessly seen and heard in the pastdecade, but never knew his name orthat he could handle a leading role sowell.

"Stakeland" (R) -- One might take a

brief look at this post-apocalyptic hor-ror film and think it a forgettable cloneof "I Am Legend," but that would bedead wrong. "Stakeland" is the storyof survivors and vamp-hunters in thewastelands of America after a vam-pire epidemic has left human societyscattered and living in tiny, frightenedrural clusters. The performances, atmosphere and suspense bring anightmare vision to life without over-

playing the violenceand gore. Monster-fans who want to seevampires return totheir virulent, nonro-mantic blood-fren-zied glory will flock tothis movie like aswarm of nocturnalpredators descend-ing on a helpless vil-lage.

Q: I recently saw "A BetterLife" and was reallyimpressed by the youngactress who played bad girlRuthie. Can you tell me a lit-tle about her? -- Tanya D., viae-mail

A: Up-and-comer ChelseaRendon played Ruthie Valdez, thegang-member girlfriend of Luis. When I spoke with Chelsea, shetold me she had alwayswanted to be an actress orperformer, especially afterseeing the performance ofher idol, Jennifer Lopez, in"Selena." Chelsea went onto get guest parts in "ER,""Judging Amy" and"FlashForward," and she ishoping "A Better Life" willbe her break into some-thing even bigger and bet-ter.

Working with directorChris Weitz, who also directed"New Moon," has its fringe bene-fits, aside from getting to workwith a genius. Chelsea told me:"Chris got me tickets to the'Eclipse' premiere. I met TaylorLautner, and I was so proud ofmyself for staying calm. I also gotto meet Peter Facinelli and every-body else. It was so cool, becausethese are people that I like andlook up to."

***Q: I've been loving this sea-

son of "So You Think You CanDance," and it got me to won-dering how one of myfavorite past winners hasbeen doing. Can you tell mewhat season-six winnerRussell Ferguson has been upto lately? -- Dominique F., viae-mail

A: Since winning the "SYTY-CD" title in December 2009,

Russell has been busydancing, teaching andacting. I spoke withhim recently, and hegave me the scoop:"Right after (I won"SYTYCD"), I got toperform at theAcademy Awards. I'vebeen teaching prettymuch everywhere

around the country:Virginia, Utah,Washington and Cali.

I'm in a film called 'BattlefieldAmerica' that'll be out probably atthe end of next year. It's definitelythe next big dance movie."

Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist

If late summer days are con-sidered the “Dog Days,” then Iguess we could call late July the“Puppy Days” ofsummer as westring togetherday after day ofhot, dry windlessdays. As I amwriting this col-umn the air isthick withsmoke, so thinkit’s laying like ablanket over thelake. It may not have any effecton fishing, but it can’t be goodfor our lungs! The Upper Kern iseven worse. The smoke is com-ing from lightning-caused firesup on thePlateau.

Thefishingupriverremainsphenome-nal andwith thelowerflow it will get even better. Thestaff of the hatchery stocked 300pounds of trophy trout in thestretch of river from the diver-sion dam to Brush Creek lastweek. Thanks, guys.

Up higher, Upper and LowerPeppermint are the only watersthat will receive stocked fish untilfall. The rest of the creeks, due tolow water and increased watertemp, are done for the summer. This also includes the creeks ofthe Greenhorn, Cedar, Alder, etc.

If you are wanting great troutfishing just pick a spot anywherefrom the park in Kernville toBrush Creek just below theJohnsondale bridge.

The lake is still holding itsown, with some nice trout beingcaught at the cemetery and atthe usual trout catching spotsalong the shore. The crappie aresill thick in the trees in the newlysubmerged areas of the lake.

The bass and catfish bite arealso good. If you are planning ongoing fishing or any other out-

side activityremember tokeep hydratedand always besafety mind-ed.

over the next few months though theimpacts will vary depending uponcurrent weather conditions and howmany acres have burned recently.

According to the U.S. ForestService, fire is a useful resource ifmanaged correctly. In a March 2011document they said, “Fire is a naturalecological process in the SierraNevada. Each year, lightning strikesresult in wildland fires that help shapethe wilderness vegetation. Naturallyoccurring fire allows forests to bethinned, opening the canopy andallowing sunlight through, whichallows for the sprouting and re-growth of plants, shrubs and trees.Fire also allows for the recycling ofnutrients to the soil while reducingthe amount of dead, woody debris.”

Trail closures are in effect in andaround the Lion Fire in the GoldenTrout Wilderness. Those planning atrip are asked to call the WesternDivide Ranger District at 559-539-2607 before obtaining your wilder-ness permit. Trail closure and currentfire information can be found onInciweb at http://inciweb.org/ or bycalling fire information lines atKernville #760-379-5646 ext. 515, orSpringville #559-539-2607 ext. 214.

Other smaller fires are still burn-ing on the Plateau as well. The BeachFire at a half-acre and the ChurchFire at six acres are being managedby the Forest Service and are notcontained. Four other lightning firesat less than an acre each have allbeen contained.

I’m at the books again. Each year, those of us who work in healthinsurance sales are required to get acertification to sell MedicareAdvantage (akaMedicare Part C)and PrescriptionDrug Plans(Medicare Part D).The task was madeeasier a few yearsago when a nation-ally recognizedfive-part exam wasdeveloped. Eachinsurance company may use thisprocess, or, with approval, createtheir own training on the rules andregulations concerning the basicinformation and marketing regula-tions. (I served on the NationalAssociation of Health Underwriterscommittee that instigated this.)

Each company selling a prescrip-tion drug plan or a Medicare HMOor PPO must provide training toevery agent who sells their productseach year. After the training, whichcan take many hours each, there isagain an examination. Some plansrequire 100% before you are certi-fied for sales. Also, every companymust, by law, have a class and exam-ination on Fraud, Waste and Abuse.Much is redundant, but as the inter-nal policies differ between compa-nies, it is a chore.

The public should be able to pickthe plan that is the best for them, notthe one or two plans that an agent

contracts with. Worse are the plansthat have in-house agents who goout and discuss their plan's benefits. They only needed to take one com-pany's training. They may knowtheir plan, but is it the best for theconsumer?

There are many agents who learnone or two plans, or the singularcompany rep. You as a consumerneed to attend many presentationsas possible to learn which plan willoffer the most coverage for yourinsurance dollar. Or, seek out anagent who represents a great varietyof plans to make sure you are gettingthe best deal possible.

The Medicare annual enrollmentperiod begins Oct. 15 and will rununtil Dec. 7. In another month youwill receive in the mail an annualnotice of change. Each company, bylaw, must send this out. In the John Wayne movie“Red River,” played all the timenow on Turner Classic Movies,Abilene was where the cowboysand their cat-tle were head-ed. Abilenewas a townfilled withsaloons andmusic, whiskey, gam-bling andprostitutes. Itsfrontierdebaucherysustained many a saddle bum.

One, in the movie, was JohnWayne, who crossed the RedRiver on the way to Åbilene with9,000 cows and a need to sell hiscattle. How he managed that isthe screen story that unfoldsbefore your eyes.

Abilene as a cow capital wasthe brainchild of Illinois stock-man Joseph G. McCoy, whodecided the business needed aKansas rather than a Missouristop. In 1867, he purchased 250acres near the Kansas Pacifictracks. He built corrals, and thendid a little word-of-mouth adver-tising around Texas. The wordspread that Abilene was cow-boy-friendly, and by 1870, some300,000 head had been driventhere. (The establishment of arailhead at Ellsworth, 60 milessouthwest of Abilene, reducedsome of the traffic around

Abilene. Abilene had lawsagainst cattle carrying disease-bearing ticks, and Ellsworth did-n’t. In 1872, its first year as acow town, 100,000 cattle arrivedin Ellsworth. There were alsoeight murders. To deal with thatproblem, Ellsworth hired a fami-ly of celebrity peace officers –the Earp brothers.)

Wichita offered a location fur-ther south on the Chisolm Trail.Settled briefly by the Osage tribeduring the Civil War, the Wichitaarea was left open to land specu-lators when the Osage departedin 1867. When the rails hitWichita, so did the Texas cow-boys. In its first year, Wichitashipped 70,000 cattle to the east-ern markets.

The last of the great cowtowns was Caldwell, 50 milessouth of Wichita, offering aneven shorter trip on the ChisolmTrail. Town promoters hookedinto the major railroads with anindependent line in 1874. By1880, after vigorously courtingmajor rail lines, Caldwellsnagged the Santa Fe Railroad. For about six years, Caldwellattracted Texas traffic, until thetrail drivers had more railroadsto choose from in the Lone StarState.

See “Red River!” Perhaps thegreatest Western ever made!

After last week’s column whereI mentioned that I had spent fouryears in the Navy standing in lines,I got to thinkingabout more aboutthose years. Ispent an interest-ing 48 months ofnaval service.About half thattime I was on adestroyer escort(DE), and the sec-ond half on asubmarine. Onthe DE we spent lots of practicetime trying to locate and makepractice hits on submarines. Laterwhen I was on a submarine, wespent lots of time locating andmaking practice hits on destroyers.I got to see it from both angles.

My DE, the Edmonds, operatedout of Pearl Harbor. It was prettygood duty, and our DE wasinvolved in a number of interestingmissions. I remember one opera-tion with a sub called the K1. Therewasn't a lot of love lost between usand the K1. In previous exerciseswe had come out the victor morethan they and it didn't sit well withthem. This latest mission was forus was to act as a slow moving tar-get for the K1 as they fired one oftheir new torpedoes which had anew tracking device on it. The tor-pedo's warhead was replaced with

a non-lethal unit and was rigged tobe fired from the sub. When it wasabout 1,000 yards from our ship, its motor was to shut off and itwas supposedly to bob around ontop of the water in a big splash ofyellow dye. We would locate, secure and tow it back to PearlHarbor.

That day I was operating thesonar. Just as I located the sub, Inoticed the torpedo leave the K1and head toward us. I told thebridge that the K1 had fired its tor-pedo and it was coming towardus. At 1,000 yards I hurriedly toldthe bridge that it wasn't slowingdown and we were going to be hit.And we were. At about 40 knots itnailed us right in the stern, collect-ing both propellers, bending theheck out of both shafts andspreading yellow dye over every-thing.We were dead in the water. Icould hear our captain cussingclear down in the CombatInformation Center. (I learnedsome new cuss words that day).

Our entire crew thought the K1did it on purpose, but nothingcame of it. The worst part of therepair was trying to remove thebig gobs of yellow dye and livingdown the notoriety of being towedinto port.

Whenever a property is put onthe market by a seller it is alwayswith the best intentions of selling. However, that being said there aresome things that aseller can do thatcan really reducethe chances ofthat sale happen-ing. As my dadsays, "Do youwant to sell yourhome, or justhave it for sale?"Here are five "do-not's" for sellers.

1: Overprice. This is by far theworst thing you can do as a sellerto hamstring the sale of your prop-erty. Once a real estate agent couldrecommend a price and the sellercould still sell for 100K over orsomething. Not so anymore. Get agood real estate agent who is expe-rienced in estimating propertyvalue and price aggressively.

2: Underpay. The days of beingable to put a listing up for 2% com-mission and seeing it sell in a weekwith multiple offers on it are gone.Pay the going commission rate;pay more! Real estate folks workhard, and we don't get a steadypaycheck. We only get paid whenwe sell. So a lot of real estateagents will not even show a homeat reduced commission. Don't costyourself an opportunity to sell your

home to save a buck or two.3: Keeping clutter. It is impor-

tant to have a clean, presentablehome. We all have a lot of personalstuff; you should see the roomwhere I am writing this articleright now! Make sure people cansee the house through the stuff.Light and airy is the thought here, wide open spaces in every room.

4: Not picking the right agent.Picking someone with a good rep-utation is important and a goodrecord of sales. Living in the area along time is a really important traitas well, as is whether they do thisprofesssion full-time or not.Remember, selling a house is a lotmore than just putting a sign in thefront yard and a couple of pictureson the MLS. Some agents don'teven do that. Get someone whowill work hard for you.

5: Spending the money beforeyou have it. Don't! Remember, yourhome is not valued based on a sell-er's needs, it is valued based on itsvalue in the market at the time ofthe sale. An appraiser won't carethat a seller needs 400K for their150K house because they have tomove to a place where houses are400K. Price aggressively based onyour needs and desire to sell. Bepatient and don't worry; it willhappen.
