Does your child miss breakfast because theres no time or they simply arent hungry first thing in the morning? The Kern High School District offers a nutritious breakfast every day that is available to all students. The School Breakfast Program (SBP), authorized by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), was established to ensure that our nations schoolchildren have access to a well-balanced meal every morning that class is in session. It is administered in California by the California Department of Education (CDE), Nutrition Services Division. It is a federally funded program that helps schools provide breakfast to all students. School breakfast provides ¼ of your childs daily nutrition needs and research shows breakfast provides fuel for school and boosts brain power. Students who participate in the School Breakfast Program perform better academically and have better school attendance. It s a nutritional and educational benefit! When a child misses breakfast and experiences hunger, their chance to succeed in the classroom is drastically reduced. Their ability to learn is impaired, translating into outcomes like behavioral problems, lower grades and poorer test scores. Busy parents also benefit from the SBP because their children will receive a healthy, balanced and affordable meal at school that eases the burden of their hectic morning rush. Not only is breakfast offered daily at every site location, but it is also provided at sites offering Saturday School. Encourage your student to take advantage of school breakfast! The School Breakfast Program operates in the same manner as the National School Lunch Program, and does not require separate application. If you have completed and submitted an Application for Free and Reduced-Price Meals for your student, and been notified that they qualify for the program as either free or reduced eligibility, those meal benefits include breakfast at no cost. Meal applications are available at all school sites or at the KHSD Nutrition Services Office. Online applications may also be submitted by visiting our website or going directly to the Titan Family Portal at: family.titank12.com *Note—Students attending designated CEP or Provision 2 sites receive all meals free without the need for application. The Healthy, Hunger-free Kids Act of 2010 requires school cafeterias to meet Federal nutrition standards for school lunches and breakfasts. These standards are in place to ensure students receive a well-balanced meal needed to be successful in school. Breakfast meals are high in vitamin C, calcium, iron and fiber to help energize your child for the day. Students are offered 4 items from required food components: grains (w/optional meat/meat alternative), fruits/vegetables, and fluid milk.
