Every year, the club holds a friendly tournament that pits the lady veterans of the game of golf against those who have comparatively fewer years of experience under their belt. The battle between the Evergreen and the Roses took place on a pleasant Friday afternoon.

Some of our lovely ladies all decked out and ready to go.

Evergreen vs Roses: Sept 2, 2016

Everything’s coming up rosesBy Gilbert Wong

Each flight of golfers looked forward to the day ahead and the air was filled with constant banter and laughter as they teed off. Despite the fact that it was a competitive event, words of encouragement and praise were heard throughout whenever a shot was taken, displaying the bonds the ladies shared with each other as fellow golfers of Keppel Club.

However, neither team forgot that winning the event meant having bragging rights until next year, and it was a challenge for all participants as they drove, chipped and putted their way through 18 holes.

Before the big winners of the day were announced, the ladies tucked into the simple but hearty dinner provided at Tee Top, enjoying the cool air- conditioning after a warm day out. The setting sun provided a fitting backdrop to close out the event and before long, it was time to announce the results.

Cheers and yells of excitement rang out around the dining area as the Roses emerged as the overall winners, pipping the Evergreen team 321 to 304. Celebrations were in order along with playful ribbing among the competitors.

Congratulations to the Roses! The Evergreen team will surely be aiming to give a good fight for the trophy next year.

The happy Evergreen and Roses after a satisfying dinner.

October is upon us, and the months have certainly whizzed by quickly! It’s that time of the year for our annual Charity Open again, and we hope to get you involved. Do support our 10 beneficiaries and contact our golf office to purchase a corporate flight, or make a donation. Any help will go a long way to those who need it most.

In this issue, we were excited to have our annual Evergreen vs Roses back on our fairways again with our lovely lady golfers. As always, there was plenty of camaraderie and fun on the fairways – enough to make it our cover story!

And sports buffs, here’s something to get you excited! Keppel Club finally welcomes a new tennis academy run by former 200-ranked ATP world tour player, Mr Joe Russell, on Oct 1 and if you’ve been bitten by the Olympic bug like we have, it’s time

for you to enrol yourselves (and your families) for its programmes.

Lastly, this month’s social calendar is set to get you moving with both the return of “Let’s Dance” and Line Dance events. And don’t forget to take part in our monthly Tombola night on Oct 7 – have a fantastic month ahead!

A foodie’s tale As told to Ashikin Hashim by Ong Yan Ting, HR Executive

Taipei has its charms like many other cities, but it was Yilan, a county that really captured my heart – and my taste buds!

As a foodie embarking on an exciting trip, I had been eagerly looking forward to the Luo Dong Night Market and its famous San Xing Onion Bun which they are reputed for.

From the scent of food wavering in the air to the variety of food on display, there were already many incentives waiting to be added to my list of existing favourites of the city.

Mr Brown Coffee Castle was a dream dessert place, with its fairy-tale view which had resplendent views of Wushi Harbor, Waiao Beach and Turtle Island.

I was lucky to taste a variety of its desserts, including a variety of cakes, tarts and ice-cream.

There’s nothing quite as special as taking a sip of their coffee and enjoying the stunning ambience of the café from the hill.

Yilan also boasts one other unique hotspot – in the form of its bizarre and fascinating Chilli Museum.

Its uniquely conjured-up “spicy ice-cream” with varying levels of spiciness goes up to level seven. And although I am not a great fan of spicy food, the adventurous side of me couldn’t resist trying it for a bit of a challenge!

And boy, did it surprise me – the chunks of chilli peppers in the ice-cream created a distinctive sweet-spicy taste.

And although the first-taste of the ice-cream was sweet, it gradually blended into an interesting spicy taste. It was an interesting experience, although I can’t imagine myself trying it at higher levels!

The sweet and spicy chilli ice-cream at the chilli museum.

The beautiful Artemis garden is a must-visit for all floral fans.

The writer Yan Ting hanging out at the Alpaca café with an adorable alpaca.

ARTEMIS BEAUTY

The Artemis Garden topped off my experience, as the first botanical gardens that is entirely dedicated to fragrance.

In Jiufen, I was also excited to try the famous Lai Ah Po Yu Yuan (taro balls) that have captured the imagination of many fans around the world.

I also explored the Zhong She Flower market, which was delightful indeed – especially for floral lovers. And in the Alpaca café, I mingled with some adorable alpacas while sipping tea, and as an animal lover, this was another highlight of my trip.

My foodie’s journey would not have been complete without a visit to the Rao He Night Market, famed for its cheese potato.

And as morbid as it may sound, I took a bite of the Coffin Bread at the Shi Lin Night market and

instantly found myself “in heaven”!

Here’s to more foodie trips far and beyond.

Until then, my tastebuds will be yearning for all things Taiwanese.

It’s always a wonderful affair whenever our reciprocal “brothers” and “sisters” from across the causeway come for a visit.

Inter-club friendly: Keppel Club vs Kluang Country Club

A friendly day on the fairway with our counterparts

And on Aug 28, it was the case once more when our warm and enthusiastic Keppelite golfers welcomed 28 of our visiting guests from Kluang Country Club in Johor for the annual friendly game.

A club tradition for many years, the friendly reinstated our strong ties with the club located within the Kluang district, also famous for its tasty durians during peak season.

Kluang and Keppel have enjoyed many friendly exchanges in the past, with our members also paying a visit to the visitors’ nine-hole course. And it mirrors Keppel largely in that it serves as a sports and recreational club for members and their families.

Vice-Captain Jamil Maksoem noted that Kluang remains one of the “closer and friendlier” reciprocal clubs that Keppel maintains successful relations with through the years. He also added that the purpose of organising the friendly

was to keep in touch with one another, while enjoying friendly banter with old friends on and off the greens.

Wearing official orange Keppel Club T-shirts, our members happily posed for a group photo with the visitors before tee-off. Played in the Stableford format and with a shotgun start, the buggies set off at 1.15pm.

Keppel won the game and Kluang Country Club’s Captain, Mr Adam Chua, later expressed his gratitude to Keppel for its impressive organisation of the event.

A dinner at the Berlayer Terrace, with a stunning sea view, capped the day’s event. Here’s looking forward to Kluang Country Club’s next visit on our greens!

Keppel Club Junior Tommy Lamb finished 11th in the US Kids Golf European Championships Boys U13 category, and secured a place in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final 2017.

By Michael Lamb

Keppel Junior flies flag high at global golf events

Tommy’s golf has been steadily improving over the last few years, with his Handicap Index score now at 3.5.

In May he travelled to East Lothian, Scotland, to compete in the US Kids Golf European Championships Boys 13 Division. The competition was played at the Luffness New course, which is a famous and traditional links course used for Open qualifiers. Rich in history, the course was opened in 1894.

The links course is a true test with the cold, wind, hard fairways, deep pot bunkers and very fast greens proving very challenging. Tommy was placed 11th over the 54-hole stroke play format, competing against many European representatives and national players and beating the 2015 World Champion. He was one place away from a guaranteed invitation to the World Championships held at Pinehurst.

Tommy also competed in the Malaysian MyFutures Junior Tour this year. The tour was played over seven legs with Tommy winning the Johor Bahru leg.

In July, he travelled to Siem Reap to compete in the Faldo Series Asia Cambodia 2016 Championships. The competition was played over 36 holes stroke play at the wonderful Angkor Golf Resort. The field was small and dominated by Thai and Malaysian golfers.

Tommy came in second in a merged Boys 12-18 Division with a one-under-par 71 first round followed by a 76 to secure himself 2nd place and an invitation to the 11th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, to be hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at Laguna Lang Co in Danang, Vietnam, in March 2017.

Keppel Club wishes Tommy all the best in his future competitions!

Have you ever wondered why people play golf? More specifically, why do they play golf in club competitions?

An online search of the first question yielded several results, including the official PGA website which was prominently listed, and Maxwelton Golf Club’s site. The PGA site cited spending quality time with loved ones as the top reason why one would play golf while Maxwelton listed eight reasons, with exercise being one of them. It surprises me that enjoyment was not listed.

I doubt that I am among the minority who play golf for the enjoyment it brings. On the contrary, I feel fortunate to find enjoyment as a primary motivator for my playing golf.

Golf is exercise, surely, but club competitions are not a daily or even weekly event, with the most frequently held competitions being the monthly medal games while other competitions are held only once a year. This makes exercising a rather poor reason as to why one plays golf in club competitions.

From this internet search exercise, I concluded that the main reasons why one plays golf in club competitions are:

1. Golf is social2. Golf allows us to be

competitive3. Golf allows all players

regardless of the level of ability to compete

4. Golf builds character 5. Golf reveals character

Intermediate Championship and Duffer’s Cup Competition

I played in the Keppel Club Intermediate Championship this year which is an annual event that sees participation from mainly “B” Division players whose Handicap Index (HI) is in the range of 11.1 to 18.0. Previously, I played in the Duffer’s Cup Competition which requires an HI of 18.1 to 24.5.

Having participated in both competitions in recent years, my impression that the social aspect in a “C” Division competition is stronger than that in the “B” Division has been reinforced. The “C” Division players, in general, appear to have their priorities more closely aligned with the reasons

Keppel Club member Mr Richard Hoo shares his thoughts on the reasons for playing golf in club competitions.

Why we play golf

outlined above than those in the “B” Division, whose competency in the game is generally higher.

Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that players in the “C” Division are more sociable than those in the “B” Division; the contrary may also be true. In the Intermediate Championship, Mr Desmond Chen was an excellent example of good sportsmanship as he often helped to pinpoint the location of a fellow competitor’s ball, thereby saving them the trouble of searching for it and saving everyone’s time.

As my marker, Mr John Tan demonstrated another commendable example when he politely encouraged me to recount the strokes that I had made at hole nine.

There are many more examples of good sportsmanship but it is not my intention to make a laundry list here. For those golfers whose names are not mentioned, your kind deeds are also appreciated.

Golf Rules

Golf has its set of rules much like any other sport, but it has perhaps one of the most.

The set of rules and accompanying decisions may be a put-off for some, especially in club competitions where it is common for strangers to play and compete in the same flight. In such a setting, a strict adherence to the rules is necessary for the competition to be fair and meaningful.

It does not help that golf rules are regularly updated while remaining complex and obscure. Some have been playing golf for decades and may have read the rules from cover to cover many times over, but that does not necessarily make them rule gurus. As we know, local and international rules are revised constantly and what was correct then may not be applicable now.

But who could fault those who have misinterpreted the rules? With the large number of rules, even professionals and world-class players such as Tiger Woods are known to have been penalised for rule breaches that they were unaware of.

Observations and Views Regarding Club Competitions

In a club competition, we should follow the rules in the strictest sense. That however does not prevent us from being helpful and friendly to each other, whether our role is that of a fellow competitor or a marker.

The one thing a player should avoid doing is to intimidate his fellow competitors with rules and etiquette. Instead, if the player shares his knowledge and experience on the golf course, it would help to strengthen the reasons why one plays club competition golf.

The Keppel Club operates probably the most heavily-utilised golf course in Singapore. Getting a slot to play a game during the weekend often requires significant effort, and some members have experienced considerable difficulties in securing a playing slot. Yet the take-up rate of club competition in most cases is underwhelming. Often, by the close of registration, there are still plenty of slots left unfilled.

In closing, I would like to urge members and fellow competition participants, especially those with plenty of experience, to be polite to your fellow golfers should an inadvertent rule breach occur. Your kind deeds will be appreciated and most probably reciprocated, and it surely will enhance the social aspect of taking part in club competitions.

Together we can make club competitions purposeful. Happy golfing!

Keppel Club member Mr Richard Hoo enjoying himself in Chiang Mai.

With the completion of Keppel Club’s golf office renovations after a month and a half of work, members can now look forward to a cleaner and sleeker new office with more streamlined service for their golfing needs. There will be improved booking stations and a photo gallery to showcase the club’s history and heritage to remind us all of the good times we’ve had while the club is still here.

The new golf office has been equipped with new facilities and a sleek look to welcome members and visitors.

Due to heavy usage of its facilities, both toilets have been extensively renovated.

With our recent collaboration with Keppel Club, members can look forward to achieving their tennis goals whether they’re beginners, social club players, or aspiring SPEX junior age group tournament competitive players and school team players.

Additionally we will offer ITF tournament-training programmes that cater towards

those who strive to achieve an ITF junior ranking.

For adults, group and private lessons are offered depending upon player skill and level. SITA also offers exclusive ladies group training with WITS & LTS team-training programmes that typically take place during morning sessions year-round.

SITA Tennis Academy will provide a level of professionalism on and off the court that will increase and raise the profile of tennis within the Keppel Club.

produce quality tennis players with the ability to make an impact on the national scene,” said Mr Steven Pellow, the new Tennis Director for the Keppel Club.

Players from Keppel Club and the Singapore Cricket Club played out an exciting tennis friendly match on Friday, Sept 9.

Singapore Cricket Club vs Keppel Club

Keppelites rise to the occasion in tennis friendlyBy Ashok Kumar, Assistant Manager, Sports

And it came at the perfect time, as the game was held at the Cricket Club’s newly-laid artificial turf tennis courts.

Although the rain delayed the start of the friendly, it did not deter the participants, with matches starting at about 6pm and only finishing way past 10pm.

The pairings from Keppel and SCC played a total of 15 matches and despite it being billed as a friendly, there was clearly a competitive edge to the games.

The match-ups were exhilarating as Keppel Club fended off a stiff challenge from the hosts to prevail 9-6.

A sumptuous dinner was later served while Keppel Club’s Tennis Sub-committee member, Mr Sit Moon Choy, and SCC Tennis Convenor, Mr Kevin Cumbers, gave their respective speeches.

The committee members also exchanged club T-shirts as is the tradition in inter-club games.

Indeed, the event was an excellent show of camaraderie between the two clubs and the players from both sides are already looking forward for a return match at Keppel Club.

The following players represented Keppel Club in this friendly :

1 Mr Lai Mun Onn (Keppel Club President)

Warren Golf and Country Club hosted the Annual Inter-club Meet (Swimming) on Sept 7, 2016. With some of our top swimmers out of contest due to exams and another international meet, Keppel Club sent a total of 20 swimmers to compete in this year’s AIMS. Nonetheless, our boys and girls strove hard and did well, improving on last year’s results.

Swimmers of note were Ashvin Raju, who bagged the Best Boy Award for this year’s AIMS with an impressive haul of three individual gold, two relay gold and one silver. A special mention to Damian Ho who could only swim one event as he is already representing the national swim team in his age group, but he still came and swam for Keppel club, adding one more gold to the medal tally.

This year we saw numerous swimmers coming through the ranks and that helped Keppel to get an

impressive medal haul. In total, our swim team this year attained an impressive 13 gold, five silver and 13 bronze.

We would like to thank all the parents who came down to support and help out during the AIMS event. As part of the ongoing effort to keep the swimmers together, we will be holding centralised training sessions for them every last Friday of the month in order to keep the momentum going and to start preparing for AIMS 2017!
