FALL 2015

Home Away From Home For Horses:KHPF Launches New Barn Renovation Effort

Two generous lead gifts - from Equestrian Events, Inc. and from USA Equestrian Trust

–have the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation off and running with its newest fundraising effort. Initiated this summer, the KHPF is raising funds to support the much-needed renovation of Barns 1 – 21, beginning with Barns 1-4 and Barns 8-12. Two significant grants from USA Equestrian Trust and Equestrian Events, Inc. are making a great impact on this project’s momentum, and the KHPF is eager to build on the excitement.

As equestrians that use the park know all too well, the past few years

have been a time of significant growth for the Kentucky Horse Park. The park is proud to host competitions and events that serve virtually every breed and discipline of horse and to operate 365 days per year.

This exponential growth and year-round activity, while a positive and welcome improvement, also mean that capital facilities are used more often and require more frequent maintenance. The capital needs of the park are constant and ongoing, and the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is committed to funding the renovations that are necessary to maintain safe and accommodating facilities.

The barns utilized by visiting competitors are one area of great concern. This summer, the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation launched a barn renovation fundraising effort to address the growing need. Barns

1-4 and Barns 8-12 serve 50 horses each and are completely full during the competition season. Not only do the structures themselves need a facelift, but also the metal frame that holds the stalls together needs to be replaced and upgraded.

Plans for renovation include removing the current stalls, installing kick-proof stalls (some of which will have the ability to become double stalls when needed),

renovating lighting, adding fans, and replacing roofing, thus making the facilities safe and accommodating for the thousands of horses that use them each year. The two generous lead gifts make an important impact, but they will only cover a portion of the costly

renovations that are necessary. The KHPF is actively seeking to fund the barn renovation project through private donations.

“Here at the Kentucky Horse Park, we are committed to providing the safest, most accommodating environment possible. While we are thrilled to welcome more horses than ever before, we are also continually challenged by providing the best ‘home away from home’ that we can offer. We are proud to partner with the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation’s efforts to fundraise for this important project. And we hope the folks that use these facilities so often-- the competitors, the owners, the trainers--will partner with us,” shared Jamie Link, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Park.

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation seeks and welcomes support for this fundraising effort. To make an impact on barn renovation at the Kentucky Horse Park, please contact the KHPF office at 859-255-5727. If you would to make a gift by check, please write “Barn Renovation Project” in the memo line and mail it to Kentucky Horse Park Foundation, 4089 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40507 or visit us on the web at www.Khpfoundation.org/donate ◆

Southern Lights Holiday Festival returns to the

Kentucky Horse Park on November 20th with exciting light displays, family activities, entertainment and more! Debuting this year will be a giant animated Carousel light display, which will be located between the Museum and Petting Zoo as part of the non-driving portion of the event. On the driving route itself, guests will enjoy new light displays and old favorites depicting Holiday vignettes, Kentucky and equine scenes, and pop culture icons – outlined in sparkling LED splendor.

After driving through the lights, guests are invited to park in the Visitors’ Lot and walk in under the stone arches to enjoy

the attractions in the park’s interior. This portion of the Holiday Festival is designed to entertain every member of the family -from local crafts, model trains and mini train rides, visits with Santa, to the ever popular exotic petting zoo. These non-driving Holiday Festival attractions are open every night except November 26 and December 24-31.

INSIDER TIP: Given record turnouts last year, we suggest you consider visiting Southern Lights on a weeknight –

the lines are shorter and the ticket price is lower on Monday through Thursday evenings! Same great attractions! Also, arrive as close as possible to opening time (5:30 pm), and you will move through the driving route more quickly and have more time to visit our non-driving Holiday Festival attractions in the park’s interior! ◆

Pre-register online for the Southern Lights Stroll!Imagine seeing the holiday lights on foot, set in the magnificent surroundings of the Kentucky Horse Park. The Southern Lights Stroll is your only opportunity to do just that!

Both the race and the Stroll will start and finish in front of the KY Horse Park Visitor Center. Additional activities that evening include complimentary Mini Express Train rides, refreshments, drawings for prizes and more!

This year the Southern Lights Stroll has teamed up with 3 Way Racing to provide chip timing for the competitive 5K race. Also, new this year, all registrations for the Stroll will be taken online at https://runsignup.com/Race/KY/Lexington/SouthernLightsStroll5K

The first 1,000 adults who pre-register online will secure a Southern Lights Stroll t-shirt and the first 350 children (12 and under) registered will receive a free holiday souvenir. (Note: children under 12 do not receive a t-shirt unless they register as an adult participant).

Linda Green has long-stood as a dedicated and passionate

Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Board Member and volunteer. Her history with the organization dates back to its earliest beginnings when she was instrumental in a number of major special events, including the Carousel Ball, the Circus Flora, and receptions surrounding major exhibitions in the International Museum of the Horse.

Perhaps most notably, it was through Linda’s leadership and vision that Southern Lights came to fruition over 20 years ago. Linda recognized the need for a winter event in Central Kentucky and worked with other key volunteers to design a family-friendly, affordable lights event. From the very beginning, Southern Lights was deemed a great success, and its attractiveness, as

both a family event and a sponsorship opportunity, continued to grow.

Linda worked diligently to ensure that new features were introduced each year at Southern Lights. She visited other holiday lights events to gather ideas and fondly remembers when the petting zoo was added. She also recalls taking a test ride on the Holiday Express Train with her young granddaughter Isabel. Then 3 years old, Isabel was insistent that the train was a necessary addition, and families have been enjoying it at Southern Lights every year since!

Linda’s involvement with horses and the park is indeed a family affair. Linda and her husband Curtis own Bel-Mar Farm, a Thoroughbred farm in Lexington. Their son, Clay, also serves as a Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Board Member. The Green family finds themselves at

the park quite often, as their 14 year old granddaughter Cosby is a passionate equestrian eventer, competing in dressage,

cross-country, and show jumping. The whole family can often be found at the park, cheering her along.

When the Champions’ Circle Society was formed, Linda felt compelled to join by making the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation aware of a bequest she had designated towards it. “I’ve been involved for so long, and I felt like I needed to do something,” she shares. Because she has made the KHPF aware of her commitment, the KHPF is able to honor Linda during her lifetime and Linda is able to enjoy special benefits reserved exclusively for Champions’ Circle Society members.

Linda adds, “I appreciate the fact that the Kentucky Horse Park has always stayed devoted to the horse and has resisted going commercial. And I like the fact that the park is devoted to all breeds and

disciplines. It’s just a great place for people to come and a great enhancement to Kentucky. I know we must be doing something right because a lot of people are trying to emulate us.”

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation formed the Champions’ Circle Society to recognize those individuals who have informed the foundation of their intentions to make a planned gift. For more information about planned giving or joining the Champions’ Circle Society, please contact the foundation office at 859-255-5727 or visit us on the web at www.khpfoundation.org. ◆

On October 7th, a reception was held at the Rolex Arena to dedicate the Jane K. Beshear Plaza in honor of the First Lady of Kentucky. In her many roles as a businesswoman, educator and community leader, First Lady

Beshear has dedicated her life to the service of others throughout the Commonwealth. As a life-long equine enthusiast and advocate she serves on the board of directors of

Equestrian Events, Inc. which organizes the Kentucky Rolex 3-Day Event, and the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation. She also served on the FEI World Equestrian Games Foundation Board that hosted the first ever North American World Games at the Kentucky Horse Park in September of 2010. The Kentucky Horse Park is honored to recognize

all of Mrs. Beshear’s hard work on behalf of Kentucky’s equine industry and the Kentucky Horse Park. ◆

were adopted in June from equine rescue organization Last Chance Corral. Since their adoption, members of the KHP

Mounted Police have been working diligently to socialize the foals and work on desensitizing through different exercises.

“We have introduced them to many things they may encounter on the street, such as bridges, water, tarps and

blowing plastic,” states Captain Lisa Rakes. She continued, “The foals have shown so much progress over the summer and we are so excited to see them grow and mature as individuals.”

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation will gladly accept donations to the KHP Mounted Police Fund to help care for and train the foals as they become Mounted Police horses in adulthood! Donate online at https://khpfoundation.org/donate or call 859-255-5727. ◆

Volunteer SpotlightSteven HoweKentucky Horse Park volunteer

Steven Howe is a man of many talents and interests. His

educational background includes an advanced degree in Library Science from the University of Kentucky, and his personal life includes explorations in ballroom dancing, oriental art, ice skating, collecting socks, and gardening.

Upon his retirement in 2004, Steven sought a place that could benefit from his professional experience while also stimulating his passion for diverse cultures and activities. The International Museum of the Horse became that perfect place. For the past decade, Steven has devoted countless hours to the Museum, assisting with cataloguing and docent work. He has also been happy to lend a hand in the Volunteer Center, assisting with spreadsheets and large group mailings.

Originally from Muscatine, Iowa, Steven worked at Book Wholesalers for many years, preparing books for libraries. His background in library work makes him a perfect match for the volunteer needs of the International Museum of the Horse. It has also led him to appreciate the importance of supporting the work of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation. For the last two years, Steven has

participated in the GoodGiving Guide Challenge online giving campaign on behalf of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation (see sidebar).

Steve believes the park gives back to him as much as he gives to the park. “I started volunteering in 2004 and have found that it is a great place to experience a lot of different activities and cultures along with feeling appreciated,” he shares, “I choose to support the park because it offers so much to so many from around the world.”

When not at the Kentucky Horse Park, Steven Howe can be found spending time with his spouse, Jill and their two dogs Boskoe and Devoe. ◆

The Kentucky Horse Park is proud to have been selected as one of 100 charities to compete in the 2015 GoodGiving Guide Challenge.
