Medway newsSwap shops, summer reading challenge and win a trip to LEGOLAND.

Five years ago, while chatting with friends over coffee and biscuits, babies crawling around our feet - we came up with the idea for a local magazine for families.

All of us were new to Medway and new to parenting and wanted a publication that shared the kind of advice and information you pick up from other mums and dads at playgroups, nurseries and the school gates. And so Kent mama was born.

As our own families have grown, so too has the magazine. It now has a print run of 35,000 copies, published 5 times a year, covering Medway and Maidstone, with plans to expand further. And our articles have developed to feature a range of topics from tots to teens - all of which have that important local angle.

Dads, grandparents, parents-to-be and those with grown-up children read the magazine. And as our readers have changed – we feel it's time for us to change too. change too.

. . . to

So look out for our new name and exciting new features in our Back to School issue out on 28th September.

Best for toddlers by Sue WadeMinnis Bay is a beautiful sandy beach where the children can use their nets in the rock pools. It’s got a fantastic promenade and a little paddling pool. Joss Bay is a sandy beach and fantastic for toddlers. Our pre-school takes the children there every year and Broadstairs is a great place for a day out with the kids. Both beaches are great for swimming.I also take mine to Leysdown on Sheppey because it’s close and clean and it has a lovely park and arcades. We have a great time there stuffi ng our faces with ice-cream; you get a real sense of holiday. None of these allow dogs in the summer months so they are very safe and clean.

Deal beach by Emma ShawDeal Castle is just behind the stony beach looking out over the channel so we tend to visit both together - picnic on the beach and park in the castle’s car park. The castle is smaller than nearby Dover but good for littler /less energetic folk and has loads of ‘secret’ passageways to explore. Family ticket to the castle is £11.30.

Best by train Make the journey part of the adventure and travel by train. Whitstable and the Thanet coast are all around an hour-long train ride from Medway, while Folkestone and Dover are within easy reach of the Maidstone line. Southeastern Trains have some great offers for families this summer. Kids for a Quid allows up to four children between the age of 5 and 15 to travel off-peak for just £1 each with one full-paying adult.

Kent’s Blue Flag Beaches 2010

Best for older kids by Shelley Whittaker Camber Sands has always been a favourite of ours. The wide, long sandy beach provides countless hours of fun and if you don’t like crowded beaches, head East or West to fi nd a quiet spot. Ideal for sandcastles, paddling, beach volleyball and even BBQs, it’s a beach that keeps all ages happy – even my teens come along when we head there and that’s a miracle! There are toilets in the carpark complete with a sink to wash off your sandy feet and buckets and spades, fi sh and chips and the usual beachside kiosks, cafes and restaurants. If you’re looking for a bit more culture, head to nearby Rye for fi sh and chips or quality coffee and cakes and a bit of retail therapy in the quirky shops. If it’s raining, don’t worry about escaping the beach – just stick up the brolly and enjoy the adventure! Camber Sands may be just over the Kent and East Sussex border but it’s worth the drive.

Sandgate, Nr Folkestone By Lara SlavinQuick drive down the M20, very clean sea and beach. Sea shelves away quickly so it wouldn’t be suitable for toddlers, but if you have older kids who swim it’s great. Always quiet, even on the sunniest of bank holidays, easy parking and 200 yards

from the high street with restaurants, cafes, great fi sh and chip shop, toilets and pubs. Quiet enough for a beachside BBQ and only a short walk on the coastal path to nearby Folkestone and the Leas Coastal Park.

Kids and clutter. The two things usually go hand in hand. But what do you do with all your unwanted baby, toddler and children’s items? Step forward Clare Knowles, from Gravesend, who has launched local swop events for parents. Says Clare: “ I have four children and a three bedroom house. There just isn’t room for unwanted stuff. One night my son showed me the GoGos he had acquired through swopping and I had an idea. I started a online group and on the same day pictures started to appear and swops started to happen. I expected to get about 30 members and now have more than 2,000”. Clare runs the events at halls in Medway, Gravesend

A new initiative called Medway Parents and Carers Forum has recently launched for parents and carers of children with disabilities. There are future plans for a general parents' forum and a group for parents with disabilities. The forums will be run by parents for parents

with the support of local organisations such as Medway Council and the NHS. The aim is to provide a collective voice and raise awareness of issues affecting a number of parents. Says Medway Council’s Michelle Lofting: “It's a chance to support each other, share knowledge and raise awareness of the groups and services

currently available. They are also an opportunity for parents to say what they really need and infl uence a change in the services provided.” Currently the forum for parents and carers of children with disabilities meets monthly in Gillingham. For more information visit www.medwaypcf.org.uk or call Michelle Lofting on 01634 332445.

Specialist maternity and newborn photographer, Rebecca May (www.rebeccamayphotography.co.uk), gives her advice on capturing your pregnancy on camera forever.

Get inspired. Fashion magazines have some of the greatest photographers in the world showing how to pose a woman. Use those angles and ideas for your own session. It’s a matter of timing. The ideal time for a maternity bump session is between 34-38 weeks when your model should be ‘blooming’.Equipment. A standard digital camera will

produce good results, if used carefully. Switch off the fl ash function and if indoors use good natural light from windows or French doors to produce more natural results. Simplify the surroundings. The miracle of life should speak for itself. So be sure to pay attention to what is in the background in every frame before shooting. Be different. Get ‘closer to nature’ and try photographing outdoors. Do a shoot at sunset, on a beach, in the woods by the bluebells, or a windswept fi eld. Dare to be different.
