Focus of the Fortnight

After School Safety

No students are to remain at school after 3.00pm unless theyare waiting to be picked up. Ball games are not permittedafter school as this has resulted in numbers of children leavinglate to walk home or catch buses. KPS OOSH has use ofthe playground and all equipment from 3.00 (as part of theirlease) and all other students and parents should vacate atthis time, unless waiting for a specific purpose. An executivestaff member will walk a circuit of the playground, encouragingstudents to leave the premises. From Monday 12 Februarythere will be a new bell at 3.10pm as a reminder for parents andstudents to vacate the school grounds or as a reminder for astudent that has not been picked up to go to the waiting gate, ensuring their safe supervision.

If waiting to be picked up, all students must wait inside theschool fence near the Doncaster Ave gate (waiting gate). Theymust not play but watch for parents' arrival, so parents do notneed to leave their car. All other students and families are

asked to exit via the Todman Avenue and Bowral Streetgates to ensure a clear thoroughfare for children enteringcars.

Parents taking children across roads are asked to observeall safety rules and apply common sense. What you feel issafe when you are with your child (ren), may not be for anunaccompanied child who follows / copies you. Calling tochildren to cross roads from the opposite side is NEVER safe.Always use the crossings.

At 3.15pm all children who are still waiting to be collected willbe brought inside, where they can be supervised by the teacheron duty. After 3.30pm parents/guardians will be contacted andif unavailable, emergency contacts will be notified. Children whoare not collected after a reasonable time will be handed over tothe Police.

Car Pick-up Procedures

Our Pick-Up Zone has been designed to make it easier andsafer for our community to collect children. For it to remainsuccessful, we remind all families to recognise the following:

We are working with Randwick Council to ensure thecooperation of all community members. Fines may be issuedfor failing to comply.

GATE REMINDERS

Gate 1 Doncaster Avenue (nearest the canteen)

This gate is open from 3pm and is only for students accessingthe Car pick Up Zone. To ensure the safety of our students, adult pedestrians are asked NOT to use this gate until after3.15pm

Gate 2 Doncaster Avenue (nearest the basketballcourt)

This gate is open from 6am to allow access to KPSOOSH,before school activities and the administration office. At 3pmthis gate is locked to avoid congestion on Doncaster Avenue.

1. You may remain in the standing zone for up to 2minutes.

2. You must remain inside your vehicle at all times.

3. Reversing your car in a school zone is unsafe andillegal.

4. Stopping in the No Stopping Zone at the corner ofDoncaster Avenue and Todman Avenue is illegal andimpedes traffic turning the corner. This also results inthe crossing being blocked, preventing our studentsfrom crossing safely. Please only join the queue ifthere is space before the No Stopping Zone, otherwise complete another circuit and join the endwhen there is room to do so.

5. Please cross only at the designated crossings.NEVER attempt to cross in front of cars in thePick-Up Zone.

6. Staff priority is student safety. Please cooperate andfollow all staff requests AT ALL TIMES TO ENSURETHE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN.

Volunteer Ethics Teacher RequiredDear Parents and Carers,

Ethics classes are available at Kensington Public School asan option for children who don’t attend Special ReligiousEducation (SRE/scripture).

Ethics classes support children in developing skills in ethicalreasoning, critical thinking, collaborative enquiry and how tosupport their arguments with evidence. The lesson materialshave been approved by the Department of Education.

We do not have enough volunteer ethics teachers atKensington Public School to meet the demand for classes in2019. The more children and stages we have requests for, themore teachers are needed.

Volunteering is a great way to engage with the school.Volunteer ethics teachers do not need a background inteaching or ethics, just a willingness to learn how to deliverclasses. They must complete a two-day workshop and otheronline training and accreditation requirements. The approvedlesson materials are provided. Ethics teachers must commit to

conduct classes each week at the school during school termsfor at least one year.

For more information about Primary Ethics, the curriculum orto volunteer as an ethics teacher, please visit the link belowwhere you can complete an on-line application or contactMichael Locke, Volunteer Ethics Coordinator, on (M) 0404 506706 or (E) [email protected]
