……...AGM continued..our OPP representatives took time to speak to us about security tips:

Tips from the OPP for Closing up the Cottage for the Season Now is the time when most property owners consider the closure and winterizing of their cottages for the season. Cottages and seasonal homes are most vulnerable to thieves from the week following Thanksgiving to the weeks prior to Victoria Day, especially if the owners are not using them for fall, winter or spring getaways. Here are some tips to consider: * Pack up all food and alcohol and remove from the cottage. * Do not leave firearms or weapons at the cottage. * Trim trees and shrubs so that doors and windows are visible from the roadway. * Secure your windows and doors – close window curtains or blinds and put up shutters. * Take your valuables with you – electronics, personal items, tools, etc. * Check around your property for objects that could be used to break in to your property and eliminate them as options for would be thieves. * Ensure that contact (key holder) information is made known for alarms, thefts, weather damage. Ask a permanent resident to check in on your property and provide them with your contact information. * Winterize any vehicles such as boats and all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s). Ensure they are covered, locked and the keys are hidden. For motorized snow machines, hide the keys. * Consider an alarm system and leave contact information with your alarm company * Consider using motion sensors to light up the exterior of the cottage. * Get to know your neighbours, know who is a stranger and who belongs there and contact the Police if you see someone who appears suspicious. * Consider using the KLCOA Neighbours Network spreadsheet – that can be found at http://klcoa.org/community/kennisis-community-watch-initiative.php For more information on how to protect your property please visit www.opp.ca*

Thank you for keeping this a focus for us, John.

President’s Remarks

I am pleased to introduce myself as your new president for the 2018/19 term. I want to thank our outgoing president, Tayce Wakefield as well as outgoing directors Tony Lepine, David Austin, Cathy Whittaker, and Cam Douglas for their committed time and dedication to the board. A number of them will continue to offer their time and expertise at a committee level. I also want to welcome our new directors to the board; Grant DeMarsh, Duncan Kent, Gino Ariano, Scott Durie and Arlene Burch. Each of these individuals bring new expertise that, combined with the rest of the existing board, sets us up for an exciting and productive term. Over the last few years the boards main initiatives have been based on a combination of both social and stewardship activities. Communication, education and advocacy in these areas continue to be a large part of our focus. Over the coming year you will see updates and changes to our website and e-blasts that will enhance our communications with our members. Water quality testing, advocacy for septic inspections and septic health, shoreline restoration, improved cell phone coverage and the hazard marker program among others will keep us busy in relation to stewardship activities. The Ladies of the Lake Luncheon and Art on the Dock are forefront in the area of social activities and the Regatta, swim lessons, sailing lessons and sailing regatta will continue to lead the way for recreation. Please check out our website at www.klcoa.org for a complete list of initiatives. As always, volunteers play a huge part in defining the KLCOA. Your board of directors volunteer a great many hours of their time to research, advocate, organize, communicate and educate on your behalf, but it is a great many of you, our members, that bring the programs to fruition. Thank you! We encourage your continued input, ideas, time and energy. We would also like to thank the Kennisis Marina and Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve for the use of their facilities, Parker Pad and Printing for providing most of our printed material at low or no cost, all of our Kennisis Breeze newsletter advertisers for their funds that allow us to undertake many of our initiatives. Thank you to Art on the Dock sponsors and exhibitors for their contributions which allowed the Kennisis community to provide significant support to the Arts Council – Haliburton Highlands’ Artists in the School Program. I look forward to serving as your President of the KLCOA as well as leading a team of conscientious and eager directors who strive to make our lake community a better place for everyone. See you in the Spring of 2018 and enjoy your winter! Deb Wratschko President, KLCOA

KLCOA ...This Is What We Do

Do you ever wonder how your $35.00 membership fee is used? Do you ever wonder why we ask for $35.00 each year? Do you ever wonder if your $35.00 is making a difference? If you do not attend the spring meeting or the AGM in the fall, you might not get a sense of the work the KLCOA does on your behalf. Look to page 5 for a snapshot of the initiatives that become tasks organized by your KLCOA directors plus additional volunteers who offer additional assistance. Although your 16 directors keep very busy they also value the work of volunteers who help to implement these initiatives and value the advertisers who provide KLCOA with the extra funds to allow us to offer the various activities. If you are interested in helping, please feel free to contact [email protected] who will connect you to the correct KLCOA director.

Snowmobiling: Drive Smart and Drive Safe

Snowmobiling is a great attraction for children and teens during the winter months. However, according to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, “you can drive a snowmobile if you have a valid Ontario driver’s licence (any class). If you do not have a driver’s licence and you are 12 years of age or older, a valid motorized snow-vehicle operator’s licence (MSVOL) will allow you to drive on trails established and maintained by a recreational organization for the use of snowmobiles. However, you must be 16 years of age or older and have a driver’s licence or a motorized snow-vehicle operator’s licence (not both) to drive a snowmobile along or across a public road where snowmobiles are allowed.

An MSVOL is issued by the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs in co-operation with the Ministry of Transportation. You must successfully pass a snowmobile driver-training course to get a licence. You must carry your driver’s licence or snow-vehicle operator’s licence when you are driving your snowmobile anywhere other than on your own property. You must show it when asked by a police or conservation officer.“ ……..visit www.mto.gov.on.ca for more information

Surface water usually contains bacteria and virus.Surface water is water on the surface of the earth such

as in a lake, river or stream. It is easily contaminated by many things including fecal matter from humans

and animals along with rain water runoff, just to name a couple. Pathogens and waterborne diseases are the results. E-coli, Cryptosporidium and Giardia (beaver fever) are most common.

How do we keep our family and friends safe from the potentially deadly effects from contaminated water? UV Disinfection – Ultraviolet Light of a special wavelength is passed through the water, inactivating any pathogens that are present. UV is very effective and it’s the most natural way to disinfect your water.

Voluntary Septic Inspections Results to Date on the Kennisis Lakes

While we wait for the implementation of mandatory septic re-inspections in Dysart the KLCOA sponsored two septic inspection open houses in 2017. As a result 27 property owners on the Kennisis lakes had comprehensive inspections, including pump outs, completed as of the end of August. Each of these property owners deserves our thanks for stepping forward. Under no obligation these water quality “heroes” decided to lead with their pocket books and take a critically important step toward helping to preserve the quality of water in the Kennisis lakes. From above ground all of these septic systems looked fine. There were no visible indications of problems at any of the properties. However, with all of the lids off, after the pump outs were completed at 10 of the sites all was not well. In 10 of the 27 (37%) septic systems various component failures were allowing septage to leak into the ground around the septic tanks and into our lakes! The inspector described the reaction of most property own-ers as shocked and distressed that their systems were leaking septage. The good news is that in most cases relatively minor and inexpensive re-pairs were completed to eliminate the problems. In only one case was the entire septic tank in need of replacement. These property owners had decided to do the right thing by ordering an in-spection. They fully deserve our thanks for taking that step and through their thoughtfulness reducing the flow of harmful contaminants into our lakes. Hopefully more property owners will do the same rather than waiting for Dysart to make such inspections mandatory. Comments or questions may be directed to [email protected] a KLCOA volunteer who is not in the

septic business

A Tribute to Gary Benson 2017 brought sadness to the Benson family and his friends and family. After many years of cherishing life at Kennisis Lake, Gary Benson past away peacefully. As a close cottage neighbour, I watched Gary fill his waterfront with a floating water slide, fishing boats, seadoos and lots of dock space as the gathering place for his family and friends. It was obvious that Gary provided a summer experience for his family that was all about learning, fun and family connections. He taught them well as I still see the family closeness grow on the dock...living, loving, laughing! And his extended family, the KLCOA will continue to benefit from his work that focussed on our roads and the health of the trout population as well as the leadership and stewardship in many KLCOA events. KLCOA will miss Gary’s presence and guidance, but will move forward knowing Gary’s principles and values will always live with us. Thank you, Gary! Jim Prince was able to attend Gary’s funeral service and spoke on behalf of KLCOA. Some of his comments are connected to the pictures that follow. Thank you, Jim!

Gary would say “the trout in the lake were like the canaries in the coalmine”

Gary’s love of the forest, the clean water, the wildlife and in particular the trout were always front and centre in his words and actions .

Page 25

Gary worked closely with the Ministry of Natural Resources and local fishery biologists to under-take fish population studies including trout spawning bed netting in the fall of the year to protect the trout spawning beds in the lake.

Gary played many roles on the KLCOA as President, Roads Coordinator, Leading Lake Stewardship when the term didn’t exist. He was a mentor to many on the KLCOA and the lake.

Words are few, thoughts are deep,

Memories of you we will always keep.

2017 Annual Rock Bass Fishing Derby

Each year, during the week of Family Fishing, the McNeelys kindly organize a fishing derby to catch as many rock bass from our lake as possible. Rock bass are part of the sunfish family, eat all day long and feed on minnows. There is a need to keep the numbers of rock bass at bay in order to protect our trout population. The annual rock bass fishing derby not only helps to reduce the numbers of this fish species but also teaches our younger folks about the sport of fishing. The first week in July and also the Family Day weekend in February allow Ontario residents to fish without fishing licences. Mark you calendars for an opportunity to learn or teach about the sport of fishing without the cost of licences! And thank you to Mike McNeely for organizing the event again this year!

Smiley, a dog well known by so many! Joanne George writes, “Not easy to type this out ... they found a mass/tumour on Smiley's stom-ach and one on his liver. The dog who I thought would live forever doesn't have much time left with us. We are obviously shocked and devastated. He has been so happy lately with extra pep in his step, so this is so hard to comprehend. “ Joan Middleton writes, “The famous Smiley is at his special place on Big K this past weekend. Un-fortunately Smiley, at 15, is about to go to the next step in dog heaven - rainbow bridge today. Our thoughts are with Joanne, Darrin, Shep this upcoming day. It was great to see Smiley on Sun-day for his last visit to the Lake. He served well with St. John's Ambulance as a therapy dog, read-ing with special children in Stouffville, visiting the elderly and so many other activities and of course a special friend to the George family. If you aren't aware of the history of Smiley he was a rescued blind golden that has had a special place in thousands of lives (he is the middle one),(below) We thank him for his service! I will be wearing my Smiley hoodie today.”

Joan Middleton takes a special moment with Smiley.

Did you know that in Toronto there is a fountain surrounded by dog statues. One dog looks very much like Smiley. There is an effort to name this statue Smiley, in his honor. Go to www.change.org and search “Smiley” to sign the petition and bring the signature count to 35,000. A most deserving tribute to Smiley!

Celebrating our Lake Community by Janis Parker

The Board of the KLCOA tries very hard to acknowledge all of our wonderful volunteers and donors that make our Lake as wonderful as it is. However, we would also like to celebrate the difference that members of our Lake Community make within Haliburton County. We thought we could use our newsletter to highlight some of our Kennisis Lake Community members that make a difference on a regular basis. Our own unsung heroes! Shelley Beach – who graciously donates her art regularly to charity auctions and has been a member of the Arts Council for Haliburton County and a staunch advocate of the Artist in the School program. Here is a sample of Shelley’s painting of Norah’s Island to celebrate the islands 10th anniversary. Jim Redner volunteers very regularly (2 or more times a week) for HHHS & and is a strong advocate for Community Care.

Larry Everitt has facilitated a bottle drive for many years and donates all proceeds to local charities. This year, money from the bottle drive will go to buy children's’ gifts for Christmas.

Terry O’Connor is an very active board member for Abbey Gardens. Roy Campbell, Tayce Wakefield & Joan Middleton are founders and Board Members of the Haliburton Pet Owners Assistance Fund. Andi Rogers, Shirlee Weeks & Scott Durie are members of the Norah’s Island Management Com-mittee and members and volunteers of the Haliburton Land Trust. Our volunteers truly make a difference for our community. Thank you for all that you give!

Looking to get involved in Haliburton County? There are a wide range of organizations that could use more help. Need to get a connection?
