• Currently more than 100,000 members• Supported by over 200 local IAM groups• Majority of members have taken and passed

an advanced driving programme• Actively assists drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists

1956 Foundation of the IAM and Advanced Driving Test

1962 First IAM Test for Commercial drivers

1986 Launch of IAM Fleet Training

1994 250,000th member enrolled

1995 First IAM Minibus Test

1998 Over 200 local IAM groups in the UK

2002 New IAM head office opened in Chiswick

2007 IAM begins active support of cyclists

Driving StandardsThe Reasons for Focusing on Driver Training

• 75% of drivers believe their driving is above average• Most drivers involved in a collision do not believe they

may have contributed to it• Many of these motorists do not learn from these mistakes• Nobody has ever confessed to being a BAD driver

The IAM Difference

• Statistically, IAM Advanced Drivers are safer. 18 month study concluded that “advanced driver training produces safer drivers and lower accident involvement”, with measurable improvements in knowledge, skills and attitude (2006, Brunel University)

• Driving is less stressful; you’ll take pride in your driving or riding and enjoy it much more

• The IAM Commercial division produces a 40% reduction in company car collisions

Preparing for the IAM Advanced Test

• Network of over 200 IAM groups across the UK

• A group “Observer” will help assist you in your “Skill for Life” programme

• The Observer will take you on a series of drives giving advice on the techniques of Advanced Driving

• Number of observed drives/rides is not fixed

The Advanced Test

• A daytime test using your own vehicle, lasting approx 90 minutes

• The test route covers all types of roads

• It includes a full and constructive de-brief

• All IAM Examiners hold a Police Advanced Driving Certificate

Cycling – a new venture for the IAM

• Provide cycle training through existing, qualified instructors across the UK

Referral to the “Bikeability” Training Scheme

• Published 3rd in series of IAM books: “How to be a better Cyclist”

• Created a new level of cycling membership; - some access to benefits and services

• The South Lakeland Car Group, formed in 2007• Area covered Lancaster – Grasmere – Barrow - Ingleton• Approx 90 Full Members• All our Group’s Observers and Committee are volunteers• Track Record of only 1 failure of the Advance Test
