CHANGE OF STAFFING FOR 2017
Mrs Kim Kelly, who currently works in a job-share with Mrs Marie Mead has accepted
the position of Year 11 Dean at Paraparaumu College from the beginning of next year.
Kim has a career goal around educational leadership, where this position provides a
great opportunity.
NEW CLASSROOMS
The two new classrooms currently being constructed are nearing completion. The
classrooms have been built with two additional shared learning areas where students
from both classrooms may work in groups on joint learning projects. These flexible
learning spaces will supplement the two seventy square metre classroom spaces
which will contain Years 7&8 Classes being taught by Mrs Janine McDonald and Mrs
Marie Mead.
2017 TEACHING TEAMS
Information on our 2017 Teaching Teams will be published in next week’s School
Newsletter.
EMERGENCY UPDATES
Due to the recent earthquakes we need to go over the procedures and reminders of
what happens during these times.
If an earthquake happens while we are at school we follow the school procedures,
which include drop, cover, and hold.
If we need to evacuate the school due to the threat of a tsunami we move immediately
to our nearest high ground at 30 Arnold Grove.
It is VERY important to ensure the school office has up to date contact information for
you and for people that we can contact in an emergency, if you are unavailable. Please
email the school office on [email protected] or call on 2984011 if your
details need updating.
There are several ways that you can receive updates from the school-
Allow your phone to receive text alerts by texting ‘follow kenaschool’ to 8987
Check your emails
Check the school Facebook page
To inform the school that your child will not be attending school please do one of the
following-
follow the Report an Absence link from the school website
www.kenakena.school.nz
text an absence to 027 7818315
email the school on [email protected]
On Monday November 14 we had 302 students absent. 40 students were reported
absent via email, 36 by text and we received around 50 phone calls. It is so important
that we know that your child is safe. Please use one of the above methods to inform
us when your child is away. Freeing up the school telephone is most important,
especially in an emergency. On Monday, contacting the families of the 176 non-notified
absent students by telephone was unrealistic for our office staff as it would have taken
over 8 hours, so please let us know if your child is going to be absent from school.
2017 ENROLMENTS
We are in the process of planning for 2017. If you have a child starting school as a
five-year-old next year and haven’t yet informed us, please contact Lynda at the school
office to let us know.
If you have friends, workmates, relatives or acquaintances who are intending to enrol
their children at Kenakena in 2017, please encourage them to get in touch.

Go-Getter Day
Twenty-six people from Koromiko Syndicate went to the Kapiti BMX track for their Go-Getter day.
There were beginners and expert riders. Some people did little bumps, other people gave it their best shot by doing the whole track. (Even though it was their first time they still managed the whole track and they got better while doing it.)
Sam said, “I finally conquered my demon hill.”
Mia said, “It’s harder than it looks.”
Even though there were some tumbles and crashes, everyone had a great
time.

Sandwiches Bring Smiles
26 kids made sandwiches in Room 6, on Koromiko Go-Getters Day, November 24, 2016.
There was a choice of fillings: eggs, cheese, chippies and cucumber were just some of them. Mrs Keohane cut the cucumber and cheese, and mashed the egg ready for the students to spread on their bread.
Sophie Hoskin said, “It was SO much fun.” JoJo said, “You should have been there.” All 26 kids said, “The sandwiches were yummy.”
Everyone returned to their own class at 12 noon with full tummies.

KAIKOURA EARTHQUAKE FUNDRAISER
On Tuesday our senior students raised $394 for Waiau School selling home baking,
‘slime’ and hand-made soaps. It was a great initiative by the students and reminded
everyone of the hardships other New Zealanders are enduring after the earthquakes.
Thank you for your support.

CONGRATULATIONS
James Fanning, a 7 year old student in Room 8, has been selected to receive an
awesome opportunity to travel to the West Ham Football Academy in London, UK in
April 2017.
James currently plays in the U8 in the Kapiti Coast United Junior League and is a
talented player with great skills and sportsmanship. He lives and breathes football
and has been playing the beautiful game as soon as he could walk and has
continued to gained experience attending camps and academies domestically and
internationally, aiming to realise his dream of playing for the best teams in the World
– all this has been recognised and his efforts rewarded by getting the opportunity to
show West Ham how amazing he is!
To enable James to take up this offer, his family have started a “Give A Little” page
and here is the link if anyone would like to contribute.

TIPS FOR PARENTS
Your kid's best stage
I hope that wherever you are on your parenting journey, you take time to pause and
just enjoy your kids, as they are, right now. They are only going to be like this for the
briefest of moments. Next month they will be bigger, smarter and possibly better in
many ways, but until then, they are just fine. Your reward for all your hard work is
that you get to be there with them today - the only day in their life when they will be
exactly this age. Don’t rob yourself of it. You might have a hundred important things
on your ‘to-do’ list today, but if you don’t get to have a cuddle with your child, smile
at them, enter into their world to see what they see and just spend time with a sense
of gratitude in your heart, then you have neglected the most important things of all.
It sometimes takes a conscious effort of the will to see the gold beneath the dross in
your current situation, and to appreciate each moment with each child as a treasure.
But even if your kids are being stroppy and hard to handle, at least go through when
they are asleep and drooling on their pillow and go, “Aww.”
