Happy New Year!!! In this new year, we look forward to working with our families to improve student performance. Parent involvement is crucial to student success in school. Please be on touch with your child’s teacher regularly, so that you are aware of your child’s educational needs. We want to make sure that our children soar! Let’s continue to see that they are prepared for instruction and are growing academically, emotionally, and socially. Together we can!

¡¡¡Feliz Año Nuevo!!! En este nuevo año, esperamos poder trabajar con nuestras familias para mejorar el rendimiento de los estudiantes. Participación de los padres es crucial para el éxito de los estudiantes en la escuela. Favor de mantenerse en contácto con el maestro/a de su estudiante regularmente, para que estés consciente de las necesidades educativas de su hijo/a. Queremos procurar que nuestros hijos se exitosos! WHAT WILL STUDENTS WORK ON IN JANUARY?

3rd In math we have moved onto studying

fractions. We will be looking at

representing fractions, drawing them,

comparing them and describing

them. We will be using fractions on a

number line and will be solving work

problems involving fractions. Please

continue to practice multiplication facts at

home!

In reading we will be doing a unit on

popcorn. We will look at what happens

inside a kernel and why popcorn

pops. We will also be making ice cream

and exploring the science and history

behind the tasty treat!

In science we have been examining what

happens to objects when they are heated

or cooled. We will be creating ways to

keep things cool and keep things warm.

In writing we have finished out

technology in the past and present

research projects. We will present our

projects using a poster, promethean

board presentation or a comic strip. We

will be doing free writing and going

through the writing process to create a

finished writing piece. Ms. Bontems

STEM January brings the end to

Marking Period 2 in the

STEM Lab. Second through

fifth graders will be

wrapping up and

submitting their

ExploraVision science

competition entries. Good

luck to all the teams! In

Kindergarten, we have

begun a new project testing

materials for the perfect

dog house. Lastly, as the

cold weather comes in, first

graders will be making a

winter storm of their own

with 3D printed snowflakes!

January 25th from 6:30-8:00,

Music

We will be starting our 4th & 5th grade chorus session in January with a performance in April. 3rd grade will be starting their recorder unit. K-3rd graders will

be starting to learn their music for our Kemp Mill Evening of Song in March. Ms.

Hines

In math, students will use equations, area models, and

number lines to add, subtract, multiply, and divide

fractions including word problems.

In reading, students will have collaborative

discussions to deepen meaning and use academic and

content specific vocabulary including figurative

language, homographs, and Greek and Latin affixes.

Students have been working hard on their Wax

Museum projects. The Wax Museum will be held on

January 18, 2017. Please mark your calendars for this

special event. We hope to see you there.

Our Kemp Mill students will

be learning the proper form

for the bump, set, serve, and

spike in volleyball. We will

be examining the ways in

which exercise effects our

bodies, especially our

muscles, skin, heart, lungs,

and cardiovascular

system. Finally, we will be

exploring the concept of

goal setting, and how

effective effort and strategies

leads to improvement.

1st

In January first graders will write personal narratives about a cooking experience we had before

winter break. A personal narrative is a true story about something that happened in someone’s

life. Please encourage your child to write their own personal narratives at home. Have them

stretch their stories across multiple pages including a beginning, middle, and end. It should have

characters, a setting, and include emotions. In reading, we will continue to identify the main top-

ic, key details, and key ideas of nonfiction text. The main topic is what the story is all about. The

key details are the important parts of the story, and the key ideas are what the author wants us to

learn. In Mathematics, we will start adding with three numbers using various strategies. In Social

Studies we are studying the past and present and in Science we are exploring with magnets. Have

a great first month in 2017!

In Math, we will continue to add and subtract 2-digit within 100 (including situations involving money),

and use mental strategies within 20.

In Reading, we will be asking and answering questions about an informational text (ex. main topic/ idea and

key details, author's purpose, etc.).

In Writing, we will write both fictional narratives that include details, and informational texts that include

facts and definitions. In Science, we will continue to discuss objects, and how the parts affect its function.

In Social Studies, we will continue to discuss how people develop, share, and borrow customs and traditions

¿EN QUÉ TRABAJARÁN LOS ESTUDIANTES EN ENERO? 3er

En matemáticas estamos estudiando

fracciones. Representaremos

fracciones, dibujarlas, compararlas y

describirlas. Estaremos usando

fracciones en una línea numérica y

estaremos resolviendo problemas con

fracciones. ¡Por favor continúe

practicando su tabla de multiplicación

en casa!

En lectura vamos a hacer una unidad

de palomitas de maíz. Vamos a ver lo

que sucede dentro de una semilla y

por qué revienta. También estaremos

haciendo helados y explorando la

ciencia y la historia detrás del sabroso

plato!

En ciencia hemos estado examinando

qué sucede a los objetos cuando se

calientan o se enfrían. Vamos a crear

maneras de mantener las cosas frías y

calientes.

En escritura hemos terminado la

tecnología del pasado y los proyectos

de investigación actuales.

Presentaremos nuestros proyectos

utilizando un cartel, una presentación

en la pizarra o una historieta.

Estaremos haciendo escritura libre y

viendo el proceso de escritura para

crear una pieza de escritura terminada Srta. Bontems

PE Nuestros estudiantes de Kemp Mill estarán aprendiendo la forma apropiada para el mate, armar, servir y spike en voleibol. Estaremos examinando las formas en que el ejercicio ejerce en nuestros cuerpos, especialmente nuestros músculos, piel, corazón, pulmones y sistema cardiovascular. Por último, estaremos explorando el concepto de establecimiento de metas, y cómo el esfuerzo efectivo y las estrategias conducen a un mejoramiento.

En matemáticas, los estudiantes usarán ecuaciones, modelos

de área y líneas numéricas para sumar, restar, multiplicar y

dividir fracciones incluyendo problemas de palabras.

En lectura, los estudiantes tendrán discusiones colaborativas

para profundizar el significado y usar vocabulario académico

y de contenido específico, incluyendo lenguaje figurativo,

homógrafos y prefijos griegos y latinos.

Los estudiantes han estado trabajando duro en sus proyectos

de museo de cera. El Museo de Cera se llevará a cabo el 18

de Enero, 2017. Por favor, marque sus calendarios para este

evento especial. Esperamos verle ahí.

de ExploraVision. ¡Buena suerte

comenzado un nuevo proyecto

un perro. Por último, a medida

que el clima frío entra, los

estudiantes de primer grado

estarán haciendo una tormenta

de invierno propia con copos

de nieve impresos en 3D! No se

olvides, la noche de STEM es el

25 de Enero de 6:30-8:00pm,

Music Comenzaremos nuestra sesión de coro de 4to y 5to grado en Enero con una actuación en

Abril. El 3er grado comenzará su unidad de usar una flauta. Los estudiantes de K-3er grado

comenzarán a aprender su música para nuestra Noche de Canto de Kemp Mill en Marzo.

En enero, los alumnos de primer grado escribirán relatos personales sobre una experiencia

culinaria que tuvieron antes de las vacaciones de invierno. Una narración personal es un

cuento real sobre algo que sucedió en la vida de alguien. Por favor anime a su niño a escribir

sus propias narraciones personales en casa. Pídales que extiendan sus cuentos creando va-

rias páginas, incluyendo un principio, medio y final. Debe tener personajes, un ambiente e

incluir emociones. En la lectura, seguiremos identificando el tema principal, los detalles clave

y las ideas clave del texto de no ficción. El tema principal es de qué trata el cuento. Los deta-

lles clave son las partes importantes del cuento, y las ideas clave son lo que el autor quiere

que aprendamos. En Matemáticas, comenzaremos a sumar cifras de tres números usando va-

rias estrategias. En Estudios Sociales estamos estudiando el pasado y el presente y en Ciencia

estamos explorando con imanes. ¡Tenga un gran primer mes en 2017!

En Matemáticas, continuaremos sumando y restando 2 dígitos dentro de 100 (incluyendo

situaciones que involucren dinero) y usaremos estrategias mentales dentro de 20. En Lectu-

ra, estaremos preguntando y respondiendo preguntas sobre un texto informativo (por ejem-

plo, tema principal/idea y detalles clave, la intención del autor, etc.). En Escritura, escribire-

mos narrativas ficticias que incluyen detalles y textos informativos con hechos y definiciones.

En Ciencia, seguiremos discutiendo objetos, y cómo las partes afectan su función. En Estu-

dios Sociales, continuaremos discutiendo cómo las personas desarrollan, comparten y toman

prestadas las costumbres y tradiciones para satisfacer sus deseos y necesidades.
