FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD:

GRANDMA MOSESGrandma Moses is proof positive that you’re never too old to learn something new. Take a look at the life of this celebrated folk artist who started a new career in her 70s. • Grandma Moses was born Anna Mary

Robertson in upstate New York in 1860. As a child, she began painting, squeezing juice out of grapes and lemons to obtain colors.

• Atthetenderageof12,Annalefthometoworkon a neighboring farm doing housework. At 27,shemarriedoneofthefarm’shiredmen,Thomas Moses. While on their honeymoon to North Carolina, the couple spied a farm in Virginia they liked, and invested their meager $600 savings to rent the place, where they remained for20years.Forsparecash,Annasold homemade potato chips and butter to the neighbors. The Moses had 10 children, only five of whom survived.

• The family thenmoved to a farm at EagleBridge, New York, and it was here that Anna completed her first painting. While wallpapering her parlor, she ran out of paper, pasted up plain white paper and painted a scene. That first work still hangs today in a Bennington, Vermont museum.

•WhenAnnawas67,Thomaspassedawayandshe handed over the farm duties to her son and daughter-in-law. During her spare time, she embroidered pictures with yarn wool, which were much admired by family and friends. However, arthritis set in, forcing her to give up her needlework when it became too difficult to hold the needle. But she could hold a brush, and so turned to painting at age 76.

•GrandmaMoseslaidMasoniteflatonanoldkitchen table for her work rather than using an easel. She shared her “studio” with the washeranddryer.Shecharged$2forasmallpainting and $3 for a large one. When she was 78, an art collector from New York City happened to be driving through Grandma’s small community and saw her paintings in the window of the W.D. Thomas Pharmacy. He bought every one, then drove to the Moses’ farm to purchase all she had on hand. Three major exhibits followed shortly after, and Anna was on the road to fame.

•GrandmaMoseslivedpasther101stbirthday.LIFE magazine featured her on the cover of its September, 19, 1960 issue in honor of her 100th birthday. Twenty-five paintings were done after she hit the century mark. Her art hangs in nine U.S. museums, and another hangs in theWhite House. In 2004, one ofher painting appeared on the PBS broadcast Antiques Roadshow, where it was appraised at $60,000. Q: We adopted a darling dog from the pound. We have a gravel yard with lots of foliage, but we can’t get her to pee there. We have to take her to the park twice daily, and it’s not easy for us.I’m84andmyhusbandis82.Anyadvice?

A: “I doubt your dog likes the gravel very much,” says Cheryl Smith, author of “Dog Friendly Gardens, Garden Friendly Dogs” (Dogwise Publishing,Wenatchee,WA,2003;$19.95).“AndI don’t blame her.” Smith, of Port Angeles, WA, says the good news is that your dog does her business in the park with no apparent problem. “One solution is to buy a small piece of sod. Take your dog to this piece of sod on leash, and be armed with lots of cookies and be ready to say, ‘Good Dog.’ She’ll see grass, and I bet she goes,” says Smith.
