Terri’s Tidbits CHAUTAUQUA Pronounced sha-TA-kwa Last summer I went to my hometown of Mechanicsburg, PA for an extended stay to renew acquaintances with family and friends. While there, friends called and asked if I wanted to go with them to a show in Mt. Gretna. Since I had never been there and love shows, I quickly agreed. It was there I was introduced to “Chautauqua”. Webster defines Chautauqua as various traveling shows and local assemblies that flourished in the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, that provided popular education combined with entertainment in the forms of lectures, concerts, and plays, modeled after activities at the Chautauqua Institute of Western New York. In 1874, a summer institute for the teaching of Sunday school teachers was started at Lake Chautauqua. This endeavor grew in popularity and dimension until it encompassed all the arts and sciences. The idea spread, and Chautauqua
Groups formed over many part of the country. Mt. Gretna was developed in the early 1880s because of the railroad and ore empire. It soon became a summer picnic getaway community. The Mt. Gretna Camp Meeting Association and the Pennsylva-nia Chautauqua began to develop a variety of programs. They offered 17 different courses, 60 lectures, and 60 first-class entertainments. Following WWI, States were no longer able to subsidize the programs and colleges were offering “credit” courses on campuses. The focus changed to summer activities. Of the original Chautauqua movement in Mt. Gretna the theatre remains, having over 130 years of success. <Continued on page 2>
Terri’s Tidbits Continued... This movement was new to me, albeit not to most of you. I wanted to share this with you because our ILR has a similar purpose, to learn for the love of learning without thought to gaining “credit.” We find many classes each term that we want to take and enjoy the “lectures” in the form of our luncheon speakers. We love to travel, to experience new sites, and learn what different cities have to offer that we would probably never experience if we visited on our own. I encourage each of you to take advantage of the classes offered in Battle Creek and Hastings. Anyone can attend any of these classes, regardless of membership, or where you live.
We have scheduled our trip to Stratford for August 11-13. We’ll be seeing Hamlet, The Diary of Anne Frank and The Sound of Music. Watch for more details to fol-low. Our Annual meeting will be May 8th at Burnham Brook, and will include election of officers. Parting Tidbit “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” - Benjamin Franklin I look forward to seeing you in class this Spring! Terri Schreffler ILR President

Hello Everyone, My name is Kimberlee Andrews-Bingham and I’m excited to be joining the Lifelong Learning team as the new Coordinator for the Institute for Learning in Retirement! I’m sure I have met many of you previously when I worked with Mary, Abbie and Connie to manage Lifelong Learning’s nonprofit classes and youth programming. After spending the last few years working in other departments at KCC, I’m happy to be moving back over to work more closely with the ILR. Having spent the last 7 years at KCC, I am committed to making sure everyone in our community has access to enriching educational experiences. I know you are all committed to this too, so I can’t wait to see what wonderful classes and trips we can come up with for the ILR this year! Until I officially start my new position on April 1st I will be working closely with Abbie to get up to speed. I hope to meet as many of you as possible before then.
