General Remarks forplanning and handling

The structural requirements of existingand new buildings must be matchedwith the requirements of the ETICS. Co-ordination of eventual preliminary tasksis to be settled with constructionmanagement.

For all connections and details definiteand realizable finishing information ismandatory.

Sandwiching of existing ETIC systems ispossible in accordance with buildinginspection approval Z-33.49-1183.

Facade insulation should begin at least20 cm below basement ceiling to avoidthermic losses via basement ceiling.Optimal would be to install anadditional plinth insulation.

To fasten components to the ETIC systemthe appropriate mounting elements mustbe taken into account.

Existent structural expansion joints are tobe realized in the ETICS as well.

Interior plaster and screed must bepoured, applied and dried. If required, appropriate measures have to be takenfor drying. Cause for ascending humidi-ty must be remedied.

All horizontal coverings, e.g. windowsills and roof closures must be installedprior to beginning with insulationprocedures.

Levelness of substrate must accord toDIN 18202. Minor unevenness of thesurface can be compensated for withthe adhesives. The substrate conditionmust be examined by the processorbefore beginning with insulationmeasures.

When using EPS panels with thickness >100 mm all lintels must be insulated withmineral wool panels of at least 20 cmwidth for reasons of fire safety (seedetail planning 3.5.1, 3.5.2).

For EPS insulation panels with thickness> 100 mm up to max. 300 mm mineralwool lintels may be omitted if for at leastevery second floor a horizontalcircumferential fire barrier is installed. The fire barrier must be realized with a20 cm wide mineral wool insulationband which is fully bonded andadditionally dowelled. The distance bet-ween lower edge of lintel and loweredge of fire barrier may not exceed0.50 m. (see detail plan 3.5.3)

Abutments between cladding and ETICmust be realized rain- and windproof. Inaccordance with RAL guidelines allrequired sealing foils for mountingwindows must be applied in the interior. The surfaces of sealing foils appliedfrom the outside must be bondable asany other foils impair functionality ofinsulation panels.

Installation of roller shutter boxes into anETICS with EPS-Panels is to be evaluatedindividually.

Only closed systems may be installed.Mixed systems with components of othersystems are not permissible and voidmanufacturer’s warranty.

4

Close expansion joints betweeninsulation panels with insulation materialstrips. For further information see the Ge-neral Construction Approvals.

Trim height differences betweeninsulation panels. Remove grinding dustcompletely.

No expansion joints of insulation panelsover structure joints. For joints betweene.g. 3-layer panels or cracks adisplacement of approx. 20 cm isadvisable.

Fill cavities under ledges with insulatingmaterial.

All connecting joints and penetrations ofthe ETICS are implemented driving rainproof with KEIM joint sealing tape. Thereinforcement layers and finishingplaster are to be separated fromadjacent components by a trowel cut orsuitable plaster parting strips.

For suitable substrates systems with EPSpanels may be realized fully bonded.Structural dowelling is implemented withe.g. 8 concrete dowels / m².

Systems with mineral wool lamellae maybe fully bonded to suitable surfaces formaximum expected wind suction loadsof 1.6 kN/m². Surfaces not suitable forfull bonding additionally requiregenerally approved dowels with140mm plates.

Decision for type of dowel use dependsupon the choice of ETIC system and wallmaterial. The length of the dowel ismandated by anchoring depth, thickness of insulation panels, thicknessof existing plaster and thickness ofadhesive layer.

Dowelling of insulation panels isperformed underneath the fabric aftersufficient drying of adhesives. For theKeramik-MW system (Ceramic)dowelling is performed through thefabric.

Facades exposed to high pressure ormechanical stress, e.g. in playing areas, may be additionally reinforced withKEIM Panzergittermatte (Armoured wiremesh) or KEIM TEC-Platten (Panels).

During the whole processing and dryingduration the air and substrate temperatu-res must be at least +5°C. For KEIMIndusil the minimum temperature starts at+ 8° C.EPS panels are to be protected from sun,and mineral wool and Multipor insula-tion panels from moisture. A suitablemeasure for that would be to cover thescaffolding.

The reinforcement layer must havecompletely set before application offinishing plaster. Drying time dependsupon weather conditions. To avoidvisible transitions enough processors arerequired per scaffolding layer. Thefinishing coat is applied wet in wet.Larger areas should be adequatelypartitioned to permit uninterruptedapplication. Observe weatherconditions.

Due to environmental influence mineraland silicate plaster may dry cloudy. Thisis no technical defect and represents noreason for warranty. For visual reasonstherefore at least one application ofKEIM Egalisationsfarbe (Equalisingpaint) is required. For high quality finisha two-coat application of KEIM Soldalitis recommended. For AquaROYAL-System a two-coat finish of AquaROYAL-Color is compulsory.

Insulation panels are inserted andpressed on flush. Sufficient bonding tosubstrate must be ensured.

Insertinginsulation panels

The XPor-Leichtmörtel (Lightweight-mortar)is applied to the Multipor Mineraldämm-platten (Mineral insulation panels) as fullwetting layer or in bead-point-method.70% of panel surface must be bondedto the surface.

GlueingMultipor panels

The insulation panels are closely abuttedand glued in a bond pattern, avoidingcross joints. Special care should be takennot to get any adhesive between the paneljoints.

Insulating panels inan offset pattern

Ledges must be compatible to the ETICSand installed prior to insulation measures. The ledge must project 4 cm over thecompleted ETIC-system. The use of windowledge brackets is advised. The end capscompensate for expansion and movementof the ledge.

ETICS compatibleledges

Connection joints between ledge andinsulation panels are implemented withKEIM Fugendichtband (joint sealing tape).Panel cut-outs are made with KEIMKonturenformer (contour shaper).

Connection joints

When using plinth profiles as vertical edgethe profiles must be installed with overlap.

Diagonalreinforcement

For EPS panels with a thickness of morethan 100 mm additional fire protectionabove building openings are required.Above the respective opening andinsulation of lintels a strip of mineral woolmust be fully glued. See detail planning3.5.1 and 3.5.2.

Fire protection bands

Fire stops are installed horizontally around thewhole building at least at every second level. The fire stop must consist of a 20 cm wide stripfrom a mineral wool insulation panel which iscompletely glued and dowelled. The maximumdistance between lower edge of lintel and loweredge of fire stop may not exceed 50 cm. Edgesin immediate proximity of openings are protectedwith fabric corner angles. See detail planning3.5.3.

The wind pressure and the resultingareas of differing wind suction loadsmust be determined individually forevery side of the building. The areas A-B-C-E with respective dowel numbers aredetermined by the building dimensions. It is not required to calculate the area D.The regional positioning of the building, land formation and building height mustbe accounted for during calculations.

KEIM Rail systems

Handling of KEIM Railsystem PS

With these systems the insulation panelsare fastened with fastening strips. Thisapplies to panels of EPS and mineralwool. For proof of stability the rails mustbe mounted with officially approvedcollared dowels. Choice of dowel typedepends upon wall material. Substratemust be dry, stable, dust- and oil-free.Unevenness of up to 3 cm/m of thesubstrate can be compensated for withspacers.

The insulating panels are additionallymounted with officially approveddowels required by technical approvalZ-33.42-189. Insulation panels inwindow and door frames are fully gluedand additionally dowelled if possible.Near to end surfaces the M-panels areadditionally secured with dowels.Where fastening strips cannot behorizontally mounted, e.g. roof connec-tions, ledges, overhanging or projectingcomponents, etc. a fastening strip is cutto length and mounted vertically. Shouldpanels be cut to length the groove iscreated with a plough plane.

KEIM perimeter and plinth insulation:Effective protection against thermal bridges

KEIM perimeter and plinth insulationare a sensible enhancement of KEIMETIC systems. Thermal bridges inheight of the basement ceiling areprevented and building structures areeffectively protected from thebeginning.

If ETICS are used and mounted in areasclose to the plinth or having groundcontact mechanical and humidity-related stress-effects must be observed.Structural waterproofing must beensured by sealing according to DIN18 195. In accordance with DIN 18195 all enclosing walls of a buildinghaving ground contact must be sealedagainst ingress of moisture. The verticalseal is implemented from the foundationup to the top of the horizontal seal, atleast 30 cm above ground level.Surfaces to be sealed must be dry, clean, stable, and level (see DIN 18202). Expansion joints of the buildingare to be implemented in plinth- andperimeter-insulation. Precipitated watermust be diverted away from the facadeby structural measures. These arecommonly a gravel layer or anti-capillary layer. Pavement or stones mustbe implemented structurally separatefrom the building and with sufficientdownward slope away from thebuilding.

It is possible to implement a plinthrecess. A baseboard is installedbetween plinth and facade insulation. The joint between plinth insulation paneland baseboard is implemented withKEIM Fugendichtband (Joint sealingtape)

The joint between plinth insulation paneland facade insulation panel isreinforced with an additional strip KEIMGlasfaser-Gittermatte (Glass fibre mesh).

The reinforcement layer ends maximal20 cm below ground level. After dryingof the finish coat in contact with theground is completed an appropriatemoisture protection is installed whichreaches down to the uncoated perimeterinsulation panels (see detail plan 7.2.3).A damage protection to be put in frontof the panels below ground has to beprovided on site, e.g. a dimpledsheeting.

KEIM Perimeter insulation

Perimeter insulation designates allinsulation below ground surface level.Perimeter insulation is installed on theoutside of the respective constructiveelement outside of structuralwaterproofing (see detail plan 7.2.2).In areas with pressing water and withinthe capillary fringe into groundwaterperimeter insulation panels must notbe used.Due to the special demands underground level the perimeter insulationpanel has a general approval by thebuilding supervisory authorities.

Perimeterdämmplatten-SA or -Plus(Perimeter insulation panels) are used.KEIM Indulastic is used for glueing.Glue is applied in 6 lumps to theinsulation panel. Glueing of panels isperformed seamlessly from bottom totop.

Under ground level reinforcement is notrequired.

KEIM Plinth insulation

The plinth zone begins with ground leveland has a height of at least 30 cm. Dueto splash water and higher mechanicalloads perimeter insulation panels areused which may also minimally invadethe soil level (see detail planning 7.2.1).Insulation panels crossing ground-levelare bevelled-cut and covered to thesubstrate with the armouring layer.

The insulation panels are tightly joinedavoiding joints and glued using thebead-point method with KEIM Pulverkle-ber-90 on mineral substrates and withKEIM Indulastic on organic substrates.

Insulation panels above ground levelhave to be dowelled if necessary. If so,the structural sealing must not bedamaged up to 15 cm above groundlevel.

KEIM Glasfaser-Gittermatte (Glass fibremesh) is embedded in KEIM Pulverkle-ber-90 (Powder adhesive). To increasepressure resistance KEIM Panzergitter-matte (Armoured wire mesh) can beused.

KEIM finish plasters together with KEIMpaint systems provide a creative designfor the plinth.

After drying of plaster adequatemoisture protection is applied up to 5cm above ground, e.g. KEIM Indulastic, which must continue underground untilreaching the structural waterproofing. As protection against damage e.g. acorrugated plastic foil is required asnext layer.
