Rural Areasthe use of a waste enclosure to store garbage, blue boxes and Green bins is permitted in rural areas, as approved by dufferin Waste. the enclosure must have a flag, similar to a mailbox, in order to notify collection staff that there are materials to be picked up. the flag should be at least 5 x 10 cm (2 x 4 in) and painted red. Collection staff will not stop if they do not see a raised red flag.

there are some rural roads that the collection vehicles only travel in one direction. on these roads, waste must be put on a particular side of the road to be collected. if waste is placed on the wrong side of the road, opposite the “line of travel”, residents are notified by the driver with an “oops” sticker. if you have any questions regarding the line of travel, please call dufferin Waste at 519.941.2816 ext. 2620.

collections for the day of the holiday and the rest of the week are shifted to one day later.

for example, if the holiday is on monday, then monday’s routes will be collected on tuesday, tuesday’s routes will be collected on Wednesday, and so on. if the holiday falls on a friday, saturday or sunday, there will be no interruptions to waste collections that week.

this side holds Green Bin contents!

Co-collectionthe trucks that collect blue boxes and Green bins have a “split body”. it may look like the compostable material is going in the same place as recyclables, however, the trucks being used to collect the materials have two separate compartments. you cannot see the two compartments unless you’re standing at the back of the truck.

it is important that containers are visible and neatly set out at the curb. Keep bags/containers for each stream (e.g. garbage, blue boxes & Green bin) separated at the curb.

Snowbanksin the winter, maintain an area to safely place waste bags/containers at the road. bags and containers placed on snowbanks cannot be collected for health and safety reasons.

Broken glass and other sharp items should be placed in a rigid container (no larger than 0.6 m/2 ft. in any dimension), sealed closed and clearly labeled “sharp object”. Please place this container beside or on top of your garbage bag/container.

Medical sharps/needles and medications are not permitted in any curbside collection program. check the take it back directory (p. 25/26) or bring them to a hazardous & Electronic Waste Event (p. 16).

Fireplace ashes should be left to cool for at least 10 days before placing them at the curb. contact Gfl at 1.888.941.3345 ext. 1 or [email protected] before placing ashes at the curb. Another option is to spread ashes in gardens for fertilizer.

papers and containers can be mixed together. dufferin’s recyclables are sent to a “single stream” sorting facility where they can sort through paper and containers.

place recyclables loose in your Blue Box. Each household is entitled to two free blue boxes. if you need more room, you can purchase another blue box or place items in a blue-tinted transparent bag for occasional overflow.

on windy days, stack your Blue Boxes. Place heavier items, such as phone books, glass jars and magazines on top.

newspaper or paper bags. Wrapping compostable materials in newspaper or paper bags will absorb moisture, reduce odours and pests, and prevent materials from freezing to the bottom of the Green bin in the winter.

Certified compostable bags. using certified compostable bags in the Green bin or kitchen collector will minimize odours, insects and leakage. these liners are 100% compostable and come in sizes to fit both containers. the bags must have either logo (shown at right) to be accepted.

Plastic bags (clear green plastic bags, shopping bags, garbage bags, etc.) are not permitted and will not be collected. However, another option is to duct tape a plastic bag into the Green Bin, so that it does not come out of the bin when the contents are collected.

Some pointers...line the bin. lining the Green bin and/or kitchen collector is a great way to keep it clean and prevent odours. there are a few options for lining the bin, shown at right.

Wrap meat in newspaper. maggots sometimes appear when flies can lay eggs on meat.

Freeze it. Keeping your meat or fish scraps in the freezer until collection day can help reduce odours.

It’s not just for the kitchen. Placing a small container in your bathroom can help collect tissues and other compostable items.

Keep it clean. rinse the kitchen collector and Green bin with lemon juice, vinegar, or add a sprinkling of baking soda to remove odours.

Shredded paper belongs in the Green Bin. shredded paper is challenging to sort in the blue box program. it is more effective and efficient to place it in the Green bin for composting. for overflow, place shredded paper in a certified compostable bag and place beside your Green bin.
