Dear Wellington Friends,

I am delighted, but far from surprised, by the momentum The Wellington School has gained in the last year. Together, as a community of parents, students, teachers, and administrators, we have experienced unprecedented success as thought leaders in education. Our school received national acclaim in November for our innovative curriculum dedicated to fostering fearless learning. In April, Wellington was named the #1 Top Workplace by CEO Magazine and 10TV. It was a tremendous honor to be recognized for providing our employees with an environment in which they feel encouraged and supported in bringing their creativity and vision to every class.

Wellington’s significant presence on the global stage would not be possible without the generous support of its parents and friends dedicated to cultivating each student’s unique potential. I am quite proud to say that we have broken several school records in fundraising this year. The Arts Premiere “Singing in the Rain” surpassed last year’s triumph, raising over $175,000 in net profit. Our first ever One Wellington. One Goal. One Day. generated the largest single day of giving in school history with 222 gifts totaling $57,770. It was an impressive display of our community’s dedication to preparing students for the pursuit of their dreams.

Gifts to The Wellington Annual Fund, The Arts Premiere, and The Campaign for Wellington are all essential to the prosperity of our school. As you look through this annual report, you will see just a few examples of how your financial backing has provided the foundation for students to build a future of their own design.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to The Wellington School. Your support is the driving force behind the remarkable trajectory of our school and the future fearless leaders within it.

Warmest regards,

Robert D. Brisk

one Wellington. one goal. one Day.The inaugural One Wellington. One Goal. One Day. was a fantastic fundraiser for our school as it increased participation in The Wellington Annual Fund to help us surpass our goal of $400,000 for the year. With Duke giving out hugs and volunteers handing out cookies in the morning car line, the event emphasized the “fun” in fundraising. Smiles and laughter were plentiful, as were the generous gifts of the Wellington community, making the day truly memorable.

The Wellington Annual Fund Grandparents & Special Friends

The Delight in DiscoveryUnquestionably, The Wellington School would not be what it is today without the love and support of the extended families in our community. For that reason, one of the school’s most beloved traditions is Grandparents and Special Friends Day held each spring. It provides an inside glimpse of what makes our school so exceptional.

The day began this year with a delicious catered breakfast for guests as they watched a program highlighting the extraordinary talents of students. Grandparents and special friends were then invited into the classrooms where they were encouraged to participate in the same experiential learning process that every Wellington student is exposed to each day. It provided many wonderful memories for both the children and their guests as they shared the delight in discovery.

Students heart WellingtonIn February, Wellington 6th graders held sheep hearts in the palm of their hands. Despite their initial reluctance to touch the organ, students were amazed by the experience of feeling something so profound. The ability to overcome the fear of the unknown is an essential skill for success in the modern world. At Wellington, we believe that the most important lesson we teach our students is to have the courage to find their passion. Whether dissecting hearts in science class or performing a solo at a choir performance, our school community provides a safe environment for students to experiment with endless possibilities.

Students explore Their creativityWellington’s dedication to educating the whole child includes invaluable access to the arts. Funding from the annual Arts Premiere is crucial to providing students with unparalleled creative experiences. They have the opportunity to work with local guest artists like Giovanni Santiago and Daniel Colvin, both of whom collaborated with the Middle and Lower Schools to create lasting works of art on display at Wellington. The permanent installations are powerful reminders to the entire school community that passion and perseverance are the keys to leaving a lasting legacy in the world.

Athletic Boosters

Athletic AchievementWhether trying a sport for the first time or pursuing a long held talent for athletics, Wellington students are encouraged to develop skills in perseverance, collaboration, and leadership. The boys varsity golf team made school history during their 2012 season by winning more tournaments and making more top finishes than any other year. Their hard work and dedication culminated with being named Division III State Runner-Ups. Other students achieve greatness as individual competitors, like diver Brittany Anderson ‘14 who finished this last season with an impressive State Runner Up title for the second year in a row. Our school believes strongly in giving every child an opportunity to set, achieve, and surpass his or her goals on the court or in the field.

Wellington Wows with RoboticsThe Wellington Robotics program has been tremendously successful due largely to the teachers and parent volunteers who lead it, including (pictured above left to right) Helen McConaghy, Monique Sierzputowski P ‘17 ‘18 ‘19, Dr. Matt Spencer P ‘19 ‘24, Dave Nye, and Dorene Henschen (not pictured).

Hank and Melinda Gleissner P ‘20 are committed to supporting the continued efforts of these hard-working and dedicated individuals. Their decision to make a generous multi-year gift to the program came from walking through the halls of the school and being continually amazed by what they saw.

“It’s the teacher student interaction that does it,” Hank said. “The talent and passion of the Wellington community is like no other.”

Melinda agreed. “Combine the learning opportunities at Wellington with the talents and passion for our children that teachers and parents have and it’s very inspiring.”

Thanks to the kind support of the Gleissners, Wellington students have much to be inspired by.

leaving a legacyThere are many gifts you leave to your family and community beyond your lifetime. Perhaps one of the most important is your commitment to providing future generations with an education worthy of their vast potential. A legacy gift is an important component to ensuring the Wellington students of tomorrow have continued access to world-class faculty and innovative curriculum in an environment that encourages fearless learning. The Legacy Society of The Wellington School celebrates those members of our community who make contributions that will stand the test of time by establishing a deferred or planned gift for the school.

The World in focusCommunity service and philanthropy are integral to a Wellington education. Each student in every division learns about the importance of giving back and helping others in need. Middle School has a particular emphasis on teaching humanitarianism. Each year students in 5th grade form a year-long partnership with recently arrived immigrants to Columbus who are students at Columbus Global Academy. Middle schoolers have the opportunity to learn about countries around the globe on a personal level that will forever inform their worldview.
