December 2013 Vol 51 Issue 6 Knights of Columbus Council #3548 “Best in the South” December 2013 Vol 51 Issue 7 Dear Brother Knights and Family, Welcome to 2014. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Each of us has plenty to be thankful for over the past year and I wish for everyone to be blessed in this New Year. I’m excited about the upcoming events and this com- ing year proves to be the best year yet for the Knights of Columbus at the Fr. Robert B. Kealey Council. Thank you to all that worked and attended our Sunday breakfast in December. We had about 35 people for breakfast and it really was great to see people coming to the Knights to socialize before and after Mass. At our Social Meeting in December, I had the honor of conferring Honorary Life Memberships to five of our Brother Knights. Congratulations to: PGK Gerry Mathei (26 yrs.), Paul Evans (25 yrs.), Charlie Fleetwood (47 yrs.), Manuel Perez (28 yrs.), and Robert Bishop (37 yrs.). This is a well-deserved award for their many years of service to the Knights of Columbus. After the meeting, Brothers Ed Fiorella and James “JR” Black prepared their usual feast of Sausage and Pepper subs for dinner. Thanks - it made for a great meal and good camaraderie. The Adult Christmas Party turned out to be quite a gala event. Everyone was in the Christmas spirit as Steve Dukes spun up the music. Congratulations to our St. Patrick’s Day Grand Marshall and newly elected Police Chief: Michael Goldsmith; Princess Pat: Chandler Price; and her two attendants: Savannah Holmes and Olivia Hou- ston. Football Frenzy Congratulations to Steve Vetter for winning 6th place in Week 9 High Score of Football Frenzy. Congratu-lations to all the winners this season!

to be committed to our tradition of providing Ocean View with a class A St. Patrick’s Day Parade. And I believe that this will be the grandest parade yet. Thank you to LOTKA for another fantastic Children’s Christmas Party. There were about 25 children that came out to have fun and get in the Christmas spirit. They made pine cone bird feeders and colored pretty Christmas pictures. Ryan, the balloon guy, had everyone captivated as he made every kind of balloon figures imaginable. The high-light was a visit from Santa (PGK Gerry Mathei) and Mrs. Claus (Doris Joachim). January is a relatively slow month for council events but even so, the Fr. Robert B. Kealey Coun-cil continues to stand out in our community and par-ish. Thanks to Brother Matt Tomazic for chairing the Basketball Free Throw Contest – we are off to a great start. We have reserved the Christ the King gym on January 11th from 6-9pm and we will need a few Brother Knights to help man the event. So come on out to Christ the King on January 11th and cheer on your favorite basketball star. DGK Bill Duncan and Warden Pete Wellman are putting together a Night Out with your Sweet-heart Steak Dinner for Valentine’s Day on February 7th. All proceeds will go to KOVAR. See our at-tached flyer and make sure to get your tickets. The Food Pantry basket by the bar door could use some bolstering. Please help the Social Ministries of Holy Trinity and donate a canned or boxed good for those that are less fortunate. Keep in your prayers: Fr. McGivney, our troops and veterans, and all the sick and/or in distress Brothers and family. Go to Mass and pray the Rosary often.

(Continued from page 1) Many of you might have heard over the past few weeks that the council was going to be shutting down BINGO due to a lack of profit. The Grand Knight, Bingo Managers, Council Officers, and Trus-tees have done their best to avoid this option. How-ever, after a full cost-benefit analysis, it has been de-termined that our weekly Bingo has now become a cost burden to the council. Because of this analysis the Grand Knight, acting as the Bingo Chairman, has decided to suspend Bingo for the time being. The council recognizes that the economic hardships over the past year have begun to have an effect on the region, and feels that this is most likely a major contributing factor. As such, the council hopes that it can resume Bingo operations once the hardships have subsided. The Grand Knight, Bingo Managers, Council Officers, and Trustees would like to thank all those Brother Knights and ladies of LOTKA who dedicated their time to help keep our Bingo operations suc-cessful as long as we did. We look forward to seeing you back once these difficult times have subsided and help us get Bingo back on its feet.

Happy Birthday Brothers! December was a busy month for the Ladies. Every-one enjoyed the Christmas party and exchanging of gifts. We elected to help one of our own this year as our “project” for Christmas. Ruth Furnace and her husband, Chris have been members of the Knights for many years and Ruth was a member of LOT-KA. As most know, she is living with ALS, Lou Geh-rig’s disease. However, with the help of her family and friends, she is able to sometimes get out and even visits the KofC bar at times. Her medical needs are many though, so we bought her numer-ous supplies she uses every day and several blous-es as she likes to look nice. It was a great feeling as Linda Clark and I visited her to deliver the bags of goodies. She cried and said to tell all the ladies “thank you very much” as she spoke to us through her IPad. She and Chris were very appreciative. Also, we were able to give a $100 Walmart gift card to a woman and her children who attend Holy Trinity Church and just recently lost her husband. She, too, was very pleased and thankful for our generosity. The Children’s Christmas Party was a huge success as we again had Ryan, our famous and talented bal-loon designer!!! He made everything that the chil-dren asked for and even some of the adults went home with their favorite character on their wrists. Santa (Gerry Mathei) made an appearance with Mrs. Claus (Doris Joachim) and Carole Dewey once again provided the food and goodie bags for all. Thanks to the men of the Knights that helped and also gave money towards paying for the par-ty. Ed Lamb and Maryann provided the huge pine-cones for the bird feeders and Brenda Dolan took care of the cookie decorating and Linda Clark was there to be a helper as needed. Thanks to Carole Dewey’s daughter for doing the face painting. Many hands made our work easier. Fun day for all !!! We hope that more will take the opportunity to sign up their kids and/or grandkids next year as it really is a great celebration for them. We decided to move our January meeting back a week to Thursday, Jan 9th since most of us are still getting over the Christmas festivities and are trying to settle back into a routine. Our January meeting is “Soup and Bingo” so if you are coming, please bring a soup, chowder or chili, bread & butter, or dessert to share with all. I will bring the Bingo game. Hope to see you there!!!
