SECTION IGENERAL INFORMATION

1.1 INTRODUCTIONThis manual contains information relative to the physical, mechanical, and electrical characteris-tics of the BENDIX/KING KDF 806 ADF System. Installation and operating procedures are also included.

1.2 EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTIONThe KDF 806 ADF system is comprised of the KDF 806 ADF receiver, a KFS 586 or KFS 586A control head, and the KA 44B antenna unit.The KDF 806 receiver is solid state with a self-contained microprocessor which provides bearing information to stations in the 190KHz to 1799KHz frequency band, along with audio reception, en-abling the pilot to identify stations and listen to transcribed weather broadcasts or commercial ra-dio stations in the AM broadcast band. Its tuning circuitry utilizes a single reference frequency crystal and a large scale integrated circuit (LSI) frequency synthesizer.The KDF 806 is an extremely compact remote mounted ADF unit. It provides DC Sine/Cosine outputs, or 400Hz, 3-wire synchro outputs for indicator drive. It can be operated from any DC input from 11 to 33 volts. Power consumption is only 15 watts at any input voltage; therefore, forced air cooling is not required.The KFS 586 is a frequency and function control head used with the KDF 806 ADF receiver. It contains a multiplexed gas discharge display that exhibits the active and standby frequencies. The KFS 586 switches power to the receiver, controls the operating modes and the audio output level, and selects the frequency of operation.The KFS 586A is a frequency and function control head used with the KDF 806 ADF receiver or as part of a Frequency Management System. It can be used in either a single or tandem installa-tion. It contains a multiplexed gas discharge display that exhibits the active and standby frequen-cies in its Frequency mode of operation. In Channel mode it exhibits channel number and fre-quency and in Program mode it exhibits program channel number and frequency. The KFS 586A switches power to the receiver, controls the operating modes and the audio output level, and se-lects the frequency of operation.An automatic dimming circuit adjusts the brightness of the display to compensate for changes in ambient light level. A single-chip, self-contained microprocessor controls the display, and the tun-ing circuitry. A non-volatile electrically alterable read only memory (EAROM) stores the active and stand-by frequencies even after the unit is turned off. Mounting dimensions are compatible with the new King Gold Crown line. An "X" appears on KFS 586 display when the ADF is not pointing.Optional External Features:• External flag output.• DC Sine/Cosine or 3-wire synchro indicator outputs selectable with jumper and 400Hz input.• Jumper to permit interface with KNI 581.• Jumper available to allow selection of 2182KHz international distress frequency.• Superflag Output (071-1077-01 version) - To interface with EFIS systems.The KA 44B Antenna Unit contains both loop and sense antennas, preamplifiers, and modulators which combine the antenna signals into a single RF signal which is output to the receiver via a triaxial cable, the length of which is non-critical.

9VA additional power is required with two XYZ loads.

The 806 system requires 12VA totalsystem power.

FREQUENCY RANGE: 190 KHz to 1799 KHz in 1KHz increments.Optional jumper selectable 2182 KHzmarine band emergency frequency. All channels are crystal controlled.

RECEIVER SENSITIVITY:

ADF Mode: 150uV/m maximum for (s + n)/n = 6dB

ANT Mode: 70uV/m maximum for (s + n)/n = 6dB

REMOTE FLAG: Can sink up to 100mA with less than 1Vdrop. Open when locked and in ADF mode,otherwise ground.

SUPERFLAG: (066-1077-01 only)

Logic high: ≥ 31V when the voltage at pin 50 is ≥ 33V; ≥ 25.5V when the voltage at pin 50 is +27.5V; and ≥ 9V when the voltage at pin 50 is ≥ 11V.

Logic low: ≤ 3.5 V.

Can source 250mA. min. The load applied to this output shall be non-reactive and terminated at a po-tential equal to A/C ground.

RECEIVER SELECTIVITY:

3dB Bandwidth: ±1.5KHz minimum off center freq.

6dB Bandwidth: ±2KHz maximum off center freq.

80dB Bandwidth: ±7KHz maximum off center freq.

SPURIOUS RESPONSE: 80dB down ±12KHz from center frequency

CROSS MODULATION/INTERMODULATION:

50KHz to 550KHz: 66dB minimum

550KHz to 150MHz: 72dB minimum

ADF BEARING ACCURACY: ± 3° from 70uV/m to 0.5V/m RF inputsignal level

1.4.2 KFS 586/A CONTROL UNIT

The KFS 586 (P/N 071-1210-XX) is the standard control unit for the KDF 806. The KFS 586A (P/N 071-1284-XX) is an optional replacement for the KFS 586/A in single control unit installations and is required for tandem control unit installations of frequency management applications. 1.5 ACCESSORIES REQUIRED, BUT NOT SUPPLIED

1.5.1 INDICATOR REQUIREMENTS

Indicators KNI 582, KI 229, KI 228, KI 227 are recommended as optional equipment to provide ADF pointing. The KDF 806 is also compatible with the KNI 581 indicator by connecting the ap-propriate jumper to pin 14 of the 806, refer to interconnect drawings (FIGURE 2-14 KDF 806 SYS-TEM INTERCONNECT WITH KFS 586, FIGURE 2-15 ADF SYSTEM INTERCONNECT WITH KFS 586A, FIGURE 2-16 KDF 806 SYSTEM INTERCONNECT WITH KFS 586A (TANDEM), and FIGURE 2-17 KFS 586A REPEATER INTERCONNECT)..The recommended indicators are listed below with part numbers and descriptions.

1. The KNI 582 ADF RMI (P/N 066-3060-00/03) provides ADF and VOR to the station bearing information. This information is presented by two pointers which are read against the compass card to provide magnetic bearing information. The ADF or VOR information presented by each pointer is selectable by the two front panel mounted switches. The servo driven compass card provides heading information.

2. The KI 229 ADF RMI (P/N 066-3038-00/01) provides ADF and VOR to the station bearing information. This information is provided by two pointers which are read against the compass card to give magnetic bearing to the station. The "double" pointer is for ADF information only, the single pointer is primarily for VOR informa-tion.

NOTE:The VOR pointer can select ADF or VOR informationby an external switch which grounds pin 35 to re-ceive ADF information.

3. The KI 228 Dual needle ADF indicator (P/N 066-3059-00/01) is a basic indicator which provides ADF to the station bearing information for dual system installations. The -00 version has a manually adjustable compass card, the -01 version has a stepper motor which can be interfaced to a KCS 55 system.

4. The KI 227 ADF (P/N 066-3063-00/01) provides ADF bearing information that is read against the compass card. The -00 has a manually adjustable compass card. The -01 can be interfaced to the KCS 55/55A compass system which allowing the compass card to be driven to show magnetic heading.

The 806 system with XYZ indicators requires a 26V, 400Hz inverter with a minimum output of 12VA.

1.7 CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS INSTRUCTIONS

1.7.1 EQUIPMENT

The instructions for continued airworthiness given in the TC or STC approvals for this product sup-plements or supersedes the instructions for continued airworthiness in this manual.Most Honeywell products are designed and manufactured to allow "on condition maintenance". On condition maintenance is described as follows; There are no periodic service requirements necessary to maintain continued airworthiness. No maintenance is required until the equipment does not properly perform its intended function. When service is required, a complete perfor-mance test should be accomplished following any repair action. Consult the appropriate unit Main-tenance/Overhaul Manual for complete performance test information.14 CFR Part 25.1529 Instructions for Continued Airworthiness is met per the following instruc-tions:

SECTION IIINSTALLATION

2.1 GENERAL INFORMATIONThis section contains suggestions and factors to consider before installing the KDF 806 ADF sys-tem. Close adherence to these suggestions will ensure a more satisfactory level of performance from the system. Read this section carefully before attempting any aspect of the installation.The conditions and test required for the TSO and MOPS approval of this article are minimum per-formance standards. It is the responsibility of those installing this article either on or with a speci-fied type or class of aircraft to determine that the aircraft installation conditions are within the TSO and MOPS standards. These articles must have separate approval for installation in an aircraft. Any features in this equipment outside the requirements of this applicable TSO and MOPS must be evaluated and approved as part of the installation approval. The article may be installed only if performed under 14 CFR part 43 or the applicable airworthiness requirements.

2.2 UNPACKING AND INSPECTING EQUIPMENTExercise extreme care when unpacking the equipment. Make a visual inspection of the unit for evidence of damage incurred during shipment. If a claim for damage is to be made, save the ship-ping container to substantiate the claim. The claim should be promptly filed with the transportation company. It would be advisable to retain the container and packaging material after all equipment has been removed in the event that equipment storage or reshipment should become necessary.

2.3 EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION

2.3.1 COOLING CONSIDERATIONS

The greatest single contributor to increased reliability of all modern day avionics is to limit the max-imum operating temperature of the individual units whether panel mounted or remote mounted. While modern day circuit designs consume far less electrical energy, the watts per cubic inch dis-sipated within the avionics units still remains much the same due to high density packaging tech-niques utilized. Consequently, the importance of providing avionics cooling is essential to the life span of the unit.While each individual unit may or may not require forced air cooling, the combined heat load of several units operating in a typical avionics location will significantly degrade the reliability of the avionics if provisions for cooling are not incorporated in the initial installation. Failure to provide cooling will certainly lead to increased avionics maintenance costs and may void the warranty.

2.3.2 KDF 806 MECHANICAL INSTALLATION PROCEDURES

A. The ADF antenna should be mounted a minimum distance of 4 feet from the DME antenna and transponder antenna.

B. Aircraft panel mounted equipment should be easily accessible and clearly visible to the pilot.

C. Panel mounted equipment should not be mounted close to heater vents or other high heat sources.

D. Consider adequate clearance for plug and harness.

E. Select the KDF 806 unit location keeping in mind the general advisability of having harness cables as short as possible. Allow one inch of free air space around top and rear of unit. Rigid mounting is permissible.

F. Refer to Installation drawing (FIGURE 2-8 KDF 806 OUTLINE AND MOUNTING DRAWING) for mounting dimensions; then mark, punch, and drill the mounting holes. Care must be taken to avoid damage to adjacent equipment or cables.

G. Ensure that bonding between rack and airframe measures less than one milliohm by preparing the surface with Alumiprep No. 33 (P/N 016-01127-0000) and Alodine No. 1001 (P/N016-01128-0000).

H. Using four No. 6-32 screws and the holes drilled in Step F, secure the mounting rack firmly in place.

I. Slide the KDF 806 into the rack. Using the fluted knob on front of the equipment rack, secure the KDF 806 to the rack.

CAUTIONAVOID MOUNTING THE UNIT NEAR HIGHHEAT SOURCES, OR NEAR ALTERNATORWIRING, INVERTER SUPPLIES, OR 400HzCOMPASS SYSTEM CABLING.

2.3.3 KDF 806 CABLE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY

Although the KDF 806 Receiver will work with any DC voltage from 11 to 33 volts, the front panel lighting circuit for the control unit must be wired for either a +5.00 or a +27.5 volt supply. To drive a 3-wire synchro indicator, 26VAC, 400Hz is required. See FIGURE 2-13 KA 44B ANTENNA CA-BLE INTERCONNECT and FIGURE 2-14 KDF 806 SYSTEM INTERCONNECT WITH KFS 586, FIGURE 2-15 ADF SYSTEM INTERCONNECT WITH KFS 586A, FIGURE 2-16 KDF 806 SYS-TEM INTERCONNECT WITH KFS 586A (TANDEM), and FIGURE 2-17 KFS 586A REPEATER INTERCONNECT for wiring details.

A. The installing facility will supply and fabricate all external cables except the anten-na cable (see FIGURE 2-13 KA 44B ANTENNA CABLE INTERCONNECT). The required connectors are supplied as a part of the installation Kit.

B. The length and routing of the external cables must be carefully studied and planned before attempting actual installation. Avoid sharp bends or locating the cable near aircraft control cables.

C. The KDF 806 and the associated wiring harness must be kept a minimum of three feet from the transponder antenna to prevent RF interference from the antenna.

D. Do not route the ADF antenna cable near the transponder antenna coax.Prior to installing the receiver itself, it is wise to make a point-to-point continuity check to verify proper wiring. A check should also be made to ensure that aircraft power is applied only to spec-ified pins. Verify that the antenna and indicator connectors are in place.With the connectors in place, place the KDF 806 into the rack and secure it by turning the hold down locking screw clockwise. Continue turning until the unit is secure in the mounting rack.

2.3.4 KFS 586/KFS 586A MECHANICAL INSTALLATION

NOTE:IN THE KFS 586A, R115 MAY BE ADJUSTED TOPROVIDE DESIRED MAXIMUM AUDIO OUTPUTLEVEL UP TO 100mW IN A SINGLE INSTALLA-TION AND 50mW IN A TANDEM INSTALLATIONWHEN CONTROL HEAD IS CONNECTED AS INFIGURE 2-16 KDF 806 SYSTEM INTERCONNECTWITH KFS 586A (TANDEM). IN TANDEM INSTAL-LATION, VOLUME OUTPUT VOLTAGE P586A1-2,AS ADJUSTED BY R115, MUST BE IDENTICAL INEACH HEAD.

A. Plan a location in the aircraft instrument panel for the KFS 586 control unit that is clearly visible and within easy access of the pilot.

B. Compass safe distance is twelve inches for a worst case deflection of one degree.C. Avoid mounting close to heater vents or other high heat sources.D. Allow a clearance of three inches from back of unit for connector.E. Refer to FIGURE 2-9 KFS 586 OUTLINE AND MOUNTING DRAWING and FIG-

URE 2-10 KFS 586A OUTLINE AND MOUNTING DRAWING for mounting dimen-sions and hole pattern. Mark, punch and drill the necessary mounting holes. Note: A cutout decal, filing template or a punch and die set are available for mounting convenience. (Refer to 1.5.2 INSTALLATION ACCESSORIES)

F. Install the KFS 586/KFS 586A through the aircraft panel from the front of panel and secure with two #6-32 black fillister head screws (P/N 089-06565-0001).

2.3.5 KFS 586/586A CABLE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY

A. Carefully route and secure the wiring harness for the KFS 586. Verify that the con-nector locking mechanism engages properly when attaching the cable connector to the rear of the control unit.

B. Once the cable harness has been fabricated, and is ready for installation, connect the rear connector to the indicator. Secure cable harness to aircraft no more than 6 inches from connector.

2.3.6 KA 44B ANTENNA MECHANICAL INSTALLATION

The antenna installation will determine, to a large extent, whether the KDF 806 will give optimum performance. The KA 44B antenna contains both the loop and sense antennas. The following considerations should be taken into account before selecting a location for the antenna:

CAUTIONKEEP THE ANTENNA AT LEAST 4 FEETAWAY FROM DME OR TRANSPONDER AN-TENNAS TO MINIMIZE L-BAND INTERFER-ENCE. S/N 8800 AND BELOW BE SURE TOPLUG THE DRAIN HOLES AND THE MOUNT-ING SCREW HOLES OF THE ANTENNA WITHA GOOD CAULKING COMPOUND OR SEAL-ANT SUCH AS RTV 3116 (P/N 016-01021-0000), TO AVOID CONTAMINATION BY WA-TER. S/N 8800 AND ABOVE ARE DESIGNEDWITHOUT DRAIN HOLES. THE ANTENNASHOULD BE MOUNTED WELL CLEAR OFTHE AIRCRAFT GENERATOR/ALTERNATORAND WELL CLEAR OF ANY GENERATOR/AL-TERNATOR CABLES.

CAUTIONDO NOT ROUTE THE CABLES ALONG WITHHIGH LEVEL TRANSMITTING CABLES. DONOT ROUTE THE CABLES WITH OR NEARALTERNATOR OR 400Hz CABLES. MAKESURE THAT THE CABLES DO NOT INTER-FERE WITH ANY OF THE AIRCRAFT CON-TROL CABLES.

A. Mount the antenna on the centerline of the aircraft fuselage. Failure to do so may result in excessive Q.E. error.

B. If the antenna is to be top mounted, select a location where shadowing from the wings, etc., is minimized.

C. The antenna should be well removed from any projections such as the engine(s) and propeller(s), as well as landing gear doors, access doors, or other openings which will break the ground plane for the antenna.

D. Use the template included in the installation kit to mark the mounting holes on the aircraft fuselage.

E. Drill and/or punch the required holes.F. Use a piece of fine sandpaper or emery cloth to sand the area on the fuselage skin

on which the doubler plate is to be mounted.G. Apply Alumiprep No. 33, P/N 016-01127-0000, to both the inside area of the fuse-

lage and the back of the doubler plate, following the directions on the container to cleanse the metal of any residue.

H. Apply Alodine No. 1001, P/N 016-01128-0000, to both locations following the di-rections on the container. This is used to ensure good bonding and prevent oxida-tion.

I. Refer to the Antenna Installation Drawing, FIGURE 2-11 KA 44B OUTLINE AND MOUNTING DRAWING (-0000) or FIGURE 2-12 KA 44B OUTLINE AND MOUNT-ING DRAWING (-0010) and mount the antenna as shown. First rivet the doubler plate in place. It is imperative that the doubler plate make a good ground plane contact with the inside of the aircraft skin.

2.3.7 CABLE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY

Refer to FIGURE 2-14 KDF 806 SYSTEM INTERCONNECT WITH KFS 586, FIGURE 2-15 ADF SYSTEM INTERCONNECT WITH KFS 586A, FIGURE 2-16 KDF 806 SYSTEM INTERCON-NECT WITH KFS 586A (TANDEM), and FIGURE 2-17 KFS 586A REPEATER INTERCONNECT for wiring details. . Consider the following when making up the cable harness:

A. The KDF 806 antenna connector is designed to connect all the cables to the an-tenna, including the triaxial cable (see FIGURE 2-6 BNC CONNECTOR TO TRI-AXIAL CABLE). This connector is supplied in the installation kit with the antenna end pre-terminated at the factory in order to facilitate proper installation and mini-mize installation-related service problems. Connector pinout information is de-tailed in FIGURE 2-3 KDF 806 CONNECTOR J8061, FIGURE 2-4 KDF 586/586A CONNECTOR J5861, and FIGURE 2-5 KA 44B CONNECTOR J4441. The triaxial cable and signal wires are supplied with the connector, and can be ordered in ei-ther 12’, 24’, 36’ or 48’ lengths. These wires should be cut to a convenient length for the particular installation and terminated at the receiver connector by the instal-lation personnel. (Their length is not critical.) Refer to the applicable System In-terconnect Diagram for the proper receiver pin connections and color code.

B. The bare drain wire of the shield that surrounds the four 24AWG wires in the 6 con-ductor antenna cable must be grounded at the receiver end. It has been left open at the antenna connector end.

C. Refer to FIGURE 2-6 BNC CONNECTOR TO TRIAXIAL CABLE for instructions on installing the coaxial connector assembly to the receiver end of the triaxial cable.

D. The signal cable and the triaxial cable leading to the antenna should be tie-wrapped together to facilitate handling and routing.

E. The audio output line should be a twisted, shielded pair, with its shield grounded at the load end. It is designed to drive a 500 ohm load, so it should be wired to the proper input of an audio panel isolation amplifier or a 500 ohm headphone jack.

F. Use 22AWG or heavier wire for the DC power to the radio and for the output lines to the optional indicator.

G. For a top-mounted antenna, leave pin 7 of the KDF 806 connector open. For a bot-tom-mounted antenna, ground pin 7.

H. After the harness has been fabricated and is ready for installation, secure it to the air frame.

2.4 POST INSTALLATION CHECK

2.4.1 KDF 806 SYSTEM

A quick preliminary operational check can be made by turning on the KDF 806 and tuning it to a local AM broadcast station or strong NDB station. Check for satisfactory audio (this should be done where clear reception is possible, preferably outside of a hanger).

NOTE:THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN ADJUSTED TO COM-PENSATE FOR THE AVERAGE AMOUNT (6° ) OFQUADRANTAL ERROR (Q.E.) THAT EXISTS DUETO THE AIRFRAME. IF ADDITIONAL Q.E. AD-JUSTMENT IS REQUIRED FOLLOW THE PROCE-DURE OUTLINED BELOW.

A. Tune in a nearby broadcast station, NDB station, or compass locator that gives a strong, clear signal, free of fading. Position the aircraft on the ramp in an area that is clear of surrounding buildings, such that the indicator points to 0° (i.e., the air-craft is heading directly toward the station.) Note the aircraft heading.

B. Turn the aircraft to the left 45° . Note the indicated relative bearing and the amount of error. Continue to turn the aircraft, stopping at every 45° and note the relative bearing error. Average the absolute errors at the 45° , 135° , 225° and 315° point, this is the amount of Q.E. to compensate for.

C. Pin 40 of the unit connector determines the direction for correcting Q.E (see FIG-URE 2-1 Q.E. COMPENSATION ADJUSTMENT). Pins 36 thru 39 are pro-grammed to give a set amount of Q.E. adjustment. The following table shows error in degrees and the proper combination of adjustment outputs to connect to pin 41 (Q.E. ground).

D. Repeat step B. If additional correction is necessary enter the table at the value pre-viously found and increase or decrease the correction from that point.

Example:If is found that an additional 2° of Q.E. is necessary, in ex-ample 2, then go to 7° on the table and ground pins 36, 37 and 38.

2.4.2 OPERATIONAL CHECKOUT

2.4.2.1 KFS 586

A. Verify that the function switch on the KFS 586 turns the unit on and off and the vol-ume control changes the volume.

B. Vary ambient light on display by placing finger on photocell (FIGURE 3-1 KFS 586 CONTROL FUNCTIONS) and verify that display darkens.

C. Depress and hold Transfer switch (FIGURE 3-1 KFS 586 CONTROL FUNCTIONS) for approximately 2 seconds. The Standby frequency should blank and the tuning knobs should then tune the Active frequency.

D. Press the Transfer switch momentarily and verify that the Standby frequency reap-pears and may be tuned by the tuning knobs.

2.4.2.2 KFS 586A Operational Verification

A. Verify that turning on unit(s) causes both display(s) to light and the volume control changes the audio level.

B. Verify that pressing the Mode button changes the mode as indicated on the display. The mode rolls through the sequence - ANT, ADF, ANT BFO, ADF BFO.

C. Vary ambient light on display by placing finger on photocell and verify that display darkens.

D. Depress and hold Transfer button for longer than 2 seconds. The Standby display will blank and the tuning knobs will then tune the Active frequency.

E. Press the Transfer button momentarily and verify that the Standby display reap-pears and may be tuned by the tuning knobs.

F. Press the CHAN button and verify that the unit(s) goes into Channel mode and dis-plays "CH" and the channel number and frequency. The tuning knobs increment or decrement the channel number only to channels with a programmed frequency. If none are programmed the unit will default to Channel 1 and display dashes in the SBY display.

G. Press the CHAN button and hold for longer than 2 seconds. Verify that unit goes into Program mode and displays a "P" and a flashing channel number.

NOTE:AN UNPROGRAMMED CHANNEL WILL DISPLAYDASHES IN THE SBY DISPLAY.

The increment/decrement knobs will change the channel number 1 thru 9. Press the Transfer button momentarily and verify that the channel number stops flashing and the frequency flashes. The tuning knobs will increment or decrement the chan-nel frequency. Pressing the Transfer button again will cause the frequency to stop flashing if it is valid and the channel number to flash again. Pressing the CHAN but-ton will return the tandem control heads to frequency mode.

Whenever one or both control heads are removed from a tandem installation, or for newly installed control heads, the unit with the desired channel frequencies should be sequenced through each channel while in Program mode after reinstallation. Each channel should be displayed long enough so that the other control head will display the channel as well (approximately .5 seconds). This will ensure that both control heads have the same channel frequencies stored in their non-volatile mem-ory.

NOTE:IF NO ACTION IS TAKEN FOR 20 SECONDSWHILE IN PROGRAM MODE, THE UNITS WILLRETURN TO THEIR PREVIOUS MODE.

H. Verify that when turning unit on while Transfer button is depressed, the unit will turn on in Active Entry and load 800KHz as the Active frequency. The Standby display will be blanked and the tuning knobs will increment and decrement the Active dis-play.

2.4.2.3 KDF 806

The following operational checks are to verify proper operation of the various internal functions of the KDF 806. They can be made with the aircraft outside of the hanger.

A. With the KFS 586/KFS 586A in the ANT mode, tune in several known stations and verify that satisfactory audio is present in the speaker and/or headphones. The nee-dle on the indicator should be parked at the 090° relative position. When the unit is put into the ADF mode, the needle should point to the stations.

B. Turn function switch on KFS 586 to ADF/BFO or on KFS 586A push Mode button until ADF/BFO is displayed. With a station tuned in, verify that a tone is present at all times. (If the station is a keyed CW station, the tone is the ident.)

C. The lower part of the display indicates the Standby frequency while the upper part of the display indicates the Active frequency. Press the Transfer button and verify that the Active and Standby frequencies exchange places.

SECTION IIIOPERATION

3.1 OPERATING PROCEDUREIt is recommended that the KDF 806 unit be turned off when the aircraft engine is started in order to prevent possible voltage transient damage to the radio. The unit is turned off by placing the function switch in the OFF position. The KFS 586A turns the unit off by rotating the ON/Off/VOL knob fully counterclockwise. The volume control adjusts the audio output for a comfortable listen-ing level.

NOTE:IN THE ADF MODE, THE AUDIO MUTING FEA-TURE OF THE KDF 806 CAUSES THE AUDIOOUTPUT TO BE MUTED UNLESS THE RECEIVERIS LOCKED ONTO A VALID STATION. THIS RE-DUCES INTERSTATION NOISE AND AIDS THE PI-LOT IN IDENTIFYING NAVIGABLE STATIONS.

3.1.1 KFS 586 OPERATION

The KDF 806 Automatic Direction Finder has two operational modes. With the mode switch in the ADF position, the unit is placed into the ADF mode and the loop antenna is enabled. The indicator needle will point to the relative bearing of the selected station. To tell if there is a sufficient signal for navigational purposes, the pilot can place the KDF 806 back into the ANT mode, parking the indicator needle at 90° . When the unit is then switched to the ADF mode, the needle should slew to the station bearing in a positive manner, without excessive sluggishness, wavering, or rever-sals.In the ANT mode, the loop antenna is disabled and the unit acts as a receiver, allowing audio re-ception through the speaker or headphones. The indicator needle remains parked at the 90° rel-ative position. This mode provides slightly clearer audio reception, and is used for station identi-fication. In various parts of the world, some stations use an interrupted carrier for identification pur-poses. A Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO) function is provided to permit these stations to be more easily identified. Placing the function switch in either of the BFO positions causes a 1000Hz tone to be heard whenever there is a radio carrier signal present at the selected frequency.

3.1.2 FREQUENCY CONTROL

Standby EntryThe Standby frequency is read on the bottom of the display. It may be tuned by turning the frequency selector control. Standby frequency tuning does not affect the Active frequency. Depressing the Transfer button causes the Standby frequen-cy to appear in the Active, or upper frequency location. To tune Standby frequen-cy:

1. Tune frequency of station desired.2. Push Transfer button

This method permits the pilot to tune to the desired frequency without the accom-panying noise of tuning through other stations.

Active EntryThe Active frequency is read on the top of the display. Holding the transfer button depressed for approximately 2 seconds causes the Standby frequency display to go out. The Active frequency may now be controlled directly by the frequency se-lector control. In this tuning mode, the station audio is present, permitting the op-erator to hunt for a station by listening to the audio while tuning. The large outer knob of the frequency selector control selects the 100’s KHz from 1 to 17, with roll over from 17 to 1, and roll under from 1 to 17. The small inner knob selects 10’s KHz when pushed in and 1’s KHz when pulled out. The 10’s KHz and 1’s KHz rolls over from 9 to 0 and rolls under from 0 to 9.

Display FlashAny time the frequency displayed is below 190, the display flashes.

X CharacterThe small X to the right of the top frequency turns off in the ADF and ADF/BFO modes only

when the ADF is pointing.

3.1.3 KFS 586A OPERATION

The operating modes of the KDF 806 are controlled by depressing the Mode button of the KFS 586A. A description of the ADF receiver modes is found in 3.1.1 KFS 586 OPERATION.

3.1.3.1 Frequency Mode

Standby Entry

Two frequencies are displayed; one in the Active display and the other in the Stand-by display. Select desired frequency in Standby display by rotating the increment/decrement knobs either clockwise or counterclockwise. The larger knob will change the 100KHz portion of the Standby (SBY) display. When changing the frequency past either end of specified frequency range the display will roll over to the other end of the frequency range. The small knob will change KHz portion of the Standby dis-play. It steps in increments of 10KHz when the knob is pushed in and 1KHz when the knob is pulled out.

To tune the ADF receiver to the desired frequency, the desired frequency must first be entered into the Standby display, and then the Transfer button must be pushed for less than 2 seconds. This will trade the frequency of the Active/Chan and Stand-by display. While in Frequency Mode, the ADF Receiver is always tuned to the fre-quency in the Active display.

Active Entry

The Active Entry mode is entered by pushing the Transfer button for longer than 2 seconds. The increment/decrement knobs operate as in Standby Entry, but as the Active/Chan display changes so does the tuned frequency of the radio.

Momentarily pushing the Transfer button returns the control head to Standby Entry. The Standby frequency prior to Active Entry mode remains unchanged.

3.1.4 CIVIL OPERATION

3.1.4.1 Channel Mode

Momentarily pressing the CHAN button while in one of the Frequency modes temporarily puts the unit in Channel mode. The unit remains tuned to the last Active frequency displayed before en-tering Channel mode. The last used channel number is displayed in the Active/Chan window and the associated frequency in the Standby display (unless no channels have been programmed, in which case the unit defaults to channel 1 and dashes are displayed in the SBY display). Turning either Increment/Decrement knob will change the channel number and its corresponding frequen-cy. The channels will only increment and decrement to channels that have been programmed.

Pressing the CHAN button will return the unit to Frequency mode and the status of Frequency mode prior to entering Channel mode remains the same. If there has been no activity for 5 sec-onds the unit will return to Frequency mode and the channel frequency remains in the Standby display.

If in Channel mode, pressing the Transfer button will return the unit to Frequency mode. The Channel frequency will become the new Active frequency and the last Active frequency will be-come the new Standby frequency. If the unit was in Active Entry mode prior to entering Channel mode, pressing Transfer button or allowing the unit to time out will bring it back to Standby Entry.

The On/Off/Volume and Mode control operate as in Frequency Mode.

3.1.4.2 Program Mode

Program mode is selected by pressing and holding the CHAN button for longer then 2 seconds. The unit remains tuned to the last Active frequency displayed before entering Program mode and the last used channel number is displayed when Program mode is entered. The channel number flashes. Either Increment/Decrement knob changes the channel number. Any channel, 1 thru 9, may be programmed.When the channel number is flashing, pressing the Transfer button will cause the channel number to stop flashing and cause the frequency to flash. The Increment/Decrement knobs then work as in Frequency mode. When frequency is flashing, pressing the Transfer button will cause the fre-quency to stop flashing and the channel number to flash. An unprogrammed channel displays dashes.

In frequency rollover or rollunder, dashes will be displayed before rolling to the highest or lowest frequency respectively. Leaving the dashes in the display unprograms the channel when leaving Program mode.

If no knob activity has occurred for 20 seconds the unit returns to Frequency mode. The unit can also be returned to Frequency mode from Program mode by pressing the CHAN button. Return-ing to Frequency mode will not change the Active or Standby frequency from what it was prior to entering Program mode.

The On/Off/Volume and Mode controls operate as in Frequency mode.

3.1.4.3 Default Mode

Turning the unit on while holding the Transfer button down will bring the unit on in Active Entry and load 800KHz as the Active frequency.

3.1.5 MILITARY OPERATION

3.1.5.1 Channel Mode

Momentarily pressing the CHAN button while in Frequency mode puts the unit in Channel mode. The last channel used is the channel number displayed. The unit tunes the ADF receiver to the frequency in the Standby display provided that it is a valid frequency. Otherwise it will tune the KDF 806 to the last Active frequency. If no channels are programmed the unit will display for 3 seconds; "CH 1" and dashes in the Standby window. Turning either Increment/ Decrement knob changes the channel number and corresponding channel frequency. The unit will only channel to channel numbers with a valid frequency programmed. If the frequency is below 190Khz, the ADF receiver does not operate and the frequency flashes.

Holding Transfer Button for 2 seconds selects Active Entry.

NOTE:CHANNEL MODE DOES NOT TIME OUT AS INCIVIL OPERATION.

Momentarily pressing the CHAN button will return the unit to frequency mode and the status re-mains what it was prior to entering Channel mode. The KDF 806 will be tuned to the frequency in the Active display.

3.1.5.2 Program Mode

Pressing and holding the CHAN button for longer than 2 seconds brings the unit into Program mode. The last used channel number is displayed and flashes. The ADF receiver remains tuned to the last Active frequency. When the channel number is flashing, the Increment/ Decrement knobs change the channel number. An unprogrammed channel displays dashes in the Standby window, in which case the receiver tunes the last valid Active frequency.

Pressing the Transfer button causes the channel number to stop flashing and the frequency to flash. The Increment/Decrement knobs then operate as in Frequency mode. Pressing the Trans-fer button again causes the Channel number to flash and the frequency to stop flashing.

In frequency rollover or rollunder dashes will be displayed before rolling to the lowest or highest frequency respectively. Leaving the dashes in the display unprograms the channel when leaving Program mode.

The unit returns to the mode and frequency which were in use prior to entering Program mode by momentarily pressing the CHAN button or if no activity has occurred for 20 seconds. The ADF receiver will be tuned to the frequency in the Active/Chan display if the prior mode was Frequency mode or the frequency in the Standby window if the prior mode was Channel mode.

The On/Off/Volume and Mode controls operate as in Frequency mode.

3.1.5.3 Default Mode

Turning the unit on while holding the Transfer button down will bring the unit on in Active Entry and load 800KHz as the Active frequency.

3.1.6 X CHARACTER

The small x to the left of the Active/Chan display turns off in the ADF and ADF/BFO modes only when the ADF is pointing.
