NATURE: Echo: An Elephant toRememberSeason Premiere: Sunday, October17, 7:00pm

Echo, the elephant matriarch, was the

subject of many films and the leader of a

carefully studied herd of elephants in Africa.

This past fall, she died of natural causes.

This film is a look back at this remarkable

animal through extraordinary footage and

interviews with the researchers that cared

for and studied this amazing herd.

NOVA:Building the Great CathedralsSeason Premiere: Tuesday, October 19, 7:00pm

Carved from a hundred million pounds of

stone, soaring effortlessly atop a spider web

of masonry, Gothic cathedrals are marvels

of human achievement and artistry. But how

did medieval builders reach such

spectacular heights? Consuming the labor

of entire towns, sometimes taking a hundred

years to build, these architectural marvels

were crafted from just hand tools and stone.

Many now teeter on the brink of catastrophic

collapse. To save them, an international

team of engineers, architects, art historians

and computer scientists searches the naves,

bays and bell-towers for clues to how the

dream of these heavenly temples on earth

came true. NOVA’s teams perform hands-on

experiments to investigate and reveal the

architectural secrets that the cathedral

builders used to erect their soaring, glass-

filled walls. On this dazzling journey, inside

the jewels of Gothic architecture, the

filmmakers of the award-winning NOVA

documentary “Secrets of the Parthenon”

reveal the hidden formulas, drawn from the

pages of the Bible itself, that drove medieval

builders ever upward.clues to life’s

breathtaking diversity in ways he could

scarcely have imagined.

8:00PMWHEN WORLDS COLLIDEfrom filmmaker Carl Byker (ANDREW

JACKSON: GOOD, EVIL AND THE

PRESIDENCY) and hosted by award-

winning author and journalist Rubén

Martínez, presents a vivid exploration

of the first century after the “Old

World” encountered the “New World.”

Written by Martínez and Byker, this

90-minute documentary illuminates

the origins of today’s Latino culture

through the largely untold story of the

Americas after Columbus. The journey

begins on the streets of Los Angeles

in 2010 and travels to Spain and Latin

America, where contact first occurred

between Spanish conquistadors and

native peoples. By the time the Span-

ish arrived, Indigenous civilization had

developed a highly sophisticated soci-

ety, including advanced architectural,

agricultural and textile practices that in

many ways surpassed those of the in-

vaders. This epic odyssey traces the

impact that these and many other

“New World” innovations had on the

“Old World” during an era almost al-

ways described as “the conquest.” In

reality, the most important conse-

quence of the era was the radical

change that both worlds experienced,

resulting in an entirely new “mestizo”

or mixed culture, an important part of

the heritage of more than 30 million

Latinos in the U.S. today.

6:00PmNOVA: The Ghost in Your GenesIn a provocative report from the fron-

tiers of biology, NOVA explores new

findings that call into question the

long-held belief that all inherited traits

are passed on by our genes. The fast-

growing field of epigenetics investi-

gates hidden influences that could

affect not only our health today but

that of our descendants far into the fu-

ture. It now seems that our environ-

ment makes small chemical changes

to our DNA without affecting the

gene’s overall makeup. To put it an-

other way, epigenetics adds to our

DNA another layer that acts as a con-

trol system of “switches.” Experiential

factors such as nutrition or stress may

trigger these switches and turn genes

on or off. These subtle changes can

then be “remembered” and passed on

from generation to generation, altering

inherited traits. This means the lives of

our grandparents - the air they

breathed, the food they ate, even the

things they saw - could have directly

affected us, and that what we do

could, in turn, affect our grandchildren.

NOVA explores this fascinating new

idea, interviewing top scientists in the

field and following what could be a

paradigm shift in the way we think

about inheritance and genes.

NATURE: Black mambaThe black mamba is one of Africa’s

most dangerous and feared snakes,

known for being aggressive when dis-

turbed. Rearing up with its head four

feet above the ground, it strikes with

deadly precision, delivering venom

that is packed with three different

kinds of toxins 10 times more deadly

than needed to kill an adult human.

Without treatment, the mortality rate is

100 percent. Until now, little has been

known about the black mamba’s natu-

ral behavior in the wild because, in

Africa, most people kill a black mamba

on sight and feel lucky to have done

so. But in the tiny country of Swazi-

land in southern Africa, a team of her-

petologists has an entirely different

“take” on these creatures and hopes

their six-week study will change public

perception of what they feel is the

world’s most misunderstood snake.

8:00PmmASTERPIECE: Wallander, Series II: Faceless KillersWallander (Kenneth Branagh) investi-

gates the brutal slaying of an elderly

couple at an isolated farmhouse. The

fallout from the case leads the detec-

tive to doubt everything, including his

abilities as a police officer. Alan Cum-

AmERICAN HORIZONS: THEPHOTOGRAPHS OF ART SINSABAUGHArt Sinsabaugh (1924-1983) made his

artistic breakthrough in the early

1960s with panoramic landscapes of

the midwest that were unprecedented

in both form and subject matter. He

used a giant 12x20-inch "banquet"

camera that allowed him to marry a

sublime and expansive 19th-century

vision with mid-20th-century formal-

ism. Trained at Chicago's renowned

Institute of Design, Sinsabaugh was a

landscape photographer in the broad-

est sense: he photographed the

spaces - both rural and urban - that

people inhabit. From his early midwest

prairies to the majestic southwest

work of his last years, his remarkable

photographs capture a richly nuanced

sense of place and the ever-changing

face of the American environment. Ac-

cording to Keith F. Davis of the Nel-

son-Atkins Museum of Art, Art

Sinsabaugh "is an artist ripe for redis-

covery."

8:00PMAMERICAN MASTERS: A Letter

to EliaElia Kazan’s name was brought front

and center to the world again during

the buzz surrounding the March 1999

Academy Awards. He was to receive

an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, an

honor that divided Hollywood. Then 89

years old, Kazan was primarily re-

membered for his impressive directo-

rial body of work in the 1950s — On

the Waterfront, East of Eden, A Street-

car Named Desire, Gentleman’s

Agreement, A Face in the Crowd —

but remained controversial. To many,

he was singularly and permanently

emblematic of the sin of “naming

names” before the House Committee

on Un-American Activities. To others,

his extraordinary work deserved

recognition. One of his strongest sup-

porters — one of the men who stood

tall with Kazan in front of that divided

Hollywood audience in 1999 — was

the filmmaker Martin Scorsese, the di-

rector of this documentary, a personal

and poignant meditation on art and

the creative impulse. The film is com-

posed of minimal elements: Scorsese

on camera and off; snippets of Kazan

interviews; readings from his writings;

photos, posters and a wealth of film

clips; and music. There is biography

and autobiography — Kazan’s life, his

sense of himself as an immigrant, as

an outsider — and Scorsese’s early

experiences seeing Kazan’s films for

the first time — and being forever in-

fluenced.

Puzzle Palace) probes the untold

story of the elite corps of clandestine

astronauts who were never told of the

true purpose of their training program.

Bamford travels to Russia to reveal

the secrets of the Soviet response —

the prototypes of the “Almaz” military

space stations that, if deployed, might

have led to a Cold War showdown in

outer space.

and which certainly sealed the fate of

the Nixon administration. The film is

also an intensely intimate look into the

conscience of a gifted and intelligent

man who National Security Advisor

Henry Kissinger told his staff was "the

most dangerous man in America who

must be stopped at all costs" upon his

leaking of the Pentagon Papers to The

That

Changed

AmericaIn the fall of

1893, an ad-

young man

rode out

from the sa-

any wolf, but an outlaw, the leader of a

marauding, cattle killing pack. But by

the time Ernest Thompson Seton fi-

had become a hero in his eyes. He

would write a tale of that encounter

that captured the essence of the van-

establishment of the national park sys-

one wolf set in motion a change in

American hearts and minds that is still

God In America: A New Adam /

A New Eden The first hour of God in America ex-plores the origins of America’s uniquereligious landscape—how the NewWorld challenged and changed thefaiths the first European settlersbrought with them. In New Mexico, thespiritual rituals of the Pueblo Indianscollided with the Catholic faith of Fran-ciscan missionaries, ending in abloody revolt. In New England, Puritanleader John Winthrop faced off against

religious dissenters from within hisown ranks. And a new message ofspiritual rebirth from evangelicalpreachers like George Whitefieldswept through the American colonies, upending traditional religious authorityand kindling a rebellious spirit thatconverged with the political upheavalof the American Revolution.

Hour two considers the origins ofAmerica’s experiment in religious lib-erty, examining how the unlikely al-liance between evangelical Baptistsand enlightenment figures such asThomas Jefferson forged a new con-cept of religious freedom. In the com-petitive religious marketplaceunleashed by this freedom, upstart de-nominations raced ahead of traditionalfaiths and a new wave of religious re-vivals swept thousands of convertsinto the evangelical fold and inspired anew gospel of social reform. In afierce political struggle, Catholic immi-grants challenged Protestant domina-tion of public schools and protestedthe daily classroom practice of readingfrom the King James Bible.

It hasbeen shot at, exploded, set on fire, rocked by earthquakes, looted for itsmagnificent sculptures and subjected

to restorations that have been termed“catastrophic.” Despite so much abuseand renown as an icon of Western civ-ilization, the question of how theParthenon was built has been largelyignored until recently. Now, thanks tothe Greek government’s $10 billionrestoration program, scholars are fi-nally probing the enigmas of its plan-ning and construction. Withunprecedented access, NOVA pres-ents the inside story of the officialrestoration, which reaches far beyondthe challenges and controversies ofconserving one of the world’s best-known buildings. The researchers areconfronting some truly monumentalriddles: How did the ancient Atheniansbuild their great temple with incredibleprecision in a mere eight years? Howdid they manage to incorporate subtle,eye-pleasing distortions into theParthenon’s layout, such that thereare few straight lines or right angles tobe seen? And, most baffling of all, howdid they accomplish all this without anoverall building plan or blueprint, which would be indispensable to amodern architect?

During the 19th century, the forces of

modernity challenged traditional faith

and drove a wedge between liberal

and conservative believers. Bohemian

immigrant Isaac Mayer Wise em-

braced change and established Re-

form Judaism in America while his

opponents adhered to Old World tradi-

tions. In New York, Presbyterian bibli-

cal scholar Charles Briggs sought to

wed his evangelical faith with modern

biblical scholarship, leading to his trial

for heresy. In the 1925 Scopes evolu-

William Jennings Bryan faced off

God In America: Soul Of A Na-tion / Of God And Caesar Hour Five explores the post-World

War II era, when rising evangelist Billy

Graham tried to inspire a religious re-

vival that fused faith with patriotism in

a Cold War battle with “Godless Com-

munism.” As Americans flocked in

record numbers to houses of worship,

non-believers and religious minorities

appealed to the US Supreme Court to

test the constitutionality of religious

expression in public schools. And civil

rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

emerged as a modern-day prophet,

calling upon the nation to honor both

biblical teachings and the founders’

democratic ideals of equal justice.

The final hour of God in America

brings the series into the present day,

exploring the religious and political as-

pirations of conservative evangelicals’

moral crusade over divisive social is-

sues like abortion and gay marriage.

Their embrace of presidential politics

would end in disappointment and

questions about the mixing of religion

and politics. Across America, the reli-

gious marketplace expanded as new

waves of immigrants from Asia, the

Middle East and Latin America made

the United States the most religiously

diverse nation on earth. In the 2008

presidential election, the re-emer-

gence of a religious voice in the Dem-

ocratic Party brought the country to a

new plateau in its struggle to reconcile

faith with politics. God in America

closes with reflections on the role of

faith in the public life of the country,

from the ongoing quest for religious

liberty to the enduring idea of America

as the “city on a hill” envisioned by the

Puritans nearly 400 years ago.

8:00PMWe Shall Remain: American Ex-perience: After the MayflowerIn March of 1621, in what is now

southeastern Massachusetts, Massas-

oit (actor Marcos Akiaten, Chiricauha

Wampanoag, sat down to negotiate

with a ragged group of English

colonists. Hungry, dirty and sick, the

pale-skinned foreigners were strug-

gling to stay alive; they were in des-

perate need of Native help. Massasoit

faced problems of his own. His people

had lately been ravaged by unex-

plained sickness, leaving them vulner-

able to the rival Narragansett to the

west. The Wampanoag sachem calcu-

lated that a tactical alliance with the

foreigners would provide a way to pro-

tect his people and hold his enemies

at bay. He agreed to give the English

the help they needed. A half-century

later, as a brutal war flared between

the English colonists and a confedera-

tion of New England Indians, the wis-

dom of Massasoit’s diplomatic gamble

seemed less clear. Five decades of

English immigration, mistreatment,

lethal epidemics and widespread envi-

ronmental degradation had brought

the Indians and their way of life to the

brink of disaster. Led by Metacom,

Massasoit’s son (actor Annowon Wee-

den, Mashpee Wampanoag), the

Wampanoag and their Native allies

fought back against the English,

nearly pushing them into the sea.

7:00PMNOVA: Building the Great

CathedralsCarved from a hundred million pounds

of stone, soaring effortlessly atop a

spider web of masonry, Gothic cathe-

drals are marvels of human achieve-

ment and artistry. But how did

medieval builders reach such spectac-

ular heights? Consuming the labor of

entire towns, sometimes taking a hun-

dred years to build, these architectural

marvels were crafted from just hand

tools and stone. Many now teeter on

the brink of catastrophic collapse. To

save them, an international team of

engineers, architects, art historians

and computer scientists searches the

naves, bays and bell-towers for clues

to how the dream of these heavenly

temples on earth came true. NOVA’s

teams perform hands-on experiments

to investigate and reveal the architec-

tural secrets that the cathedral

builders used to erect their soaring,

glass-filled walls. On this dazzling

8:00PMFRONTLINE: Death by FireDid Texas execute an innocent man?

Several controversial death penalty

cases are currently under examination

in Texas and in other states, but it’s

the 2004 execution of Cameron Todd

Willingham — convicted for the arson

deaths of his three young children —

that’s now at the center of the national

debate. With unique access to those

closest to the case, FRONTLINE ex-

amines the Willingham conviction in

light of new science that raises doubts

about whether the fire at the center of

the case was really arson at all. The

film meticulously examines the evi-

dence used to convict Willingham,

provides an in-depth portrait of those

most impacted by the case and ex-

plores the explosive implications of

the execution of a possibly innocent

man.

spooky — Hitchcock used them quite

successfully to frighten moviegoers —

or as a general nuisance; scarecrows

were, after all, invented to scare crows

away from crops. But their image is

about to take a turn. New research

has shown that they are among the

most intelligent animals in the world,

able to use tools as only elephants

and chimpanzees do, able to recog-

nize each other’s voices and 250 dis-

tinct calls. They are social, mate for

life and raise their young for as long

as five years. They’re able to recog-

We Shall Remain: American Ex-

sion

In the spring of 1805, Tenskwatawa

(actor Billy Merasty, Cree First Na-

tion), a Shawnee, fell into a trance so

deep that those around him believed

he had died. When he finally stirred,

the young prophet claimed to have

met the Master of Life. He told those

who crowded around that the Indians

were in dire straits because they had

adopted white culture and rejected tra-

ditional spiritual ways. For several

years, Tenskwatawa’s spiritual revival

movement drew thousands of adher-

ents from tribes across the Midwest.

His elder brother, Tecumseh (actor

Michael Greyeyes, Plains Cree),

would harness the energies of that re-

newal to create an unprecedented mil-

itary and political confederacy of often

antagonistic tribes, all committed to

stopping white westward expansion.

The brothers came closer than any-

one since to creating an Indian nation

that would exist alongside and sepa-

rate from the United States. The

dream of an independent Indian state

may have died at the Battle of the

Thames, when Tecumseh was killed

fighting alongside his British allies, but

the great Shawnee warrior would live

on as a potent symbol of Native pride

and pan-Indian identity.

NOVA: Crash of Flight 447On June 1, 2009, Flight AF447, an Air

France Airbus A330 flying from Rio de

Janeiro to Paris, disappeared over the

Atlantic Ocean, taking with it all 228

lives on board. How could a state-of-

the-art airliner with elaborate elec-

tronic safety and navigation features

and a faultless safety record simply

vanish without a trace? NOVA assem-

bles a team of seasoned pilots, engi-

neers and safety experts to examine

the evidence that emerged in the

weeks following this disaster. What led

Flight 447’s crew to fly straight into a

towering thunderstorm? Using expert

testimony, messages transmitted by

the doomed plane’s computer system

and multi-layered CGI weather recon-

structions, NOVA pieces together the

events leading up to the catastrophe.

With a veteran pilot at the controls of

an Airbus simulator, NOVA recon-

structs the final moments in the cock-

447’s crew. The program provides a

forensic view of crucial events seen

from all angles to reveal what really

happened on Flight 447.

8:00PMFRONTLINE: The SpillLong before the Deepwater Horizon

explosion in the Gulf, BP was widely

viewed as a company that valued

deal-making and savvy marketing

over safety, a “serial environmental

criminal” that left behind a long trail of

problems — deadly accidents, disas-

trous spills, countless safety violations

— which many now believe should

have triggered action by federal regu-

lators. Could the spill have been pre-

vented? Through interviews with

current and former employees and ex-

ecutives, government regulators and

safety experts, FRONTLINE corre-

spondent Martin Smith joins with the

investigative non-profit ProPublica to

examine the trail that led to the disas-

ter in the Gulf. From BP’s vast oil

fields in Alaska to its refineries in

Texas and its trading rooms in New

York and London, the film raises new

questions about whether BP’s corpo-

rate culture will finally be forced to

change.

Season Of Arthur® PremieringMonday, October 11 At 2pm On

KCOS.This fall, everyone’s favorite aardvark,

Arthur Read, is back for an all-new

season of ARTHUR, which will intro-

duce a new friend and encourage kids

to get creative through the arts, mak-

ing movies and even writing graphic

novels! Five new episodes premiere

Monday, October 11 on PBS KIDS

GO! (check local listings).

In the premiere episode, “The Wheel

Deal,” Arthur and his Elwood City

friends meet Lydia Fox – a new char-

acter created by ARTHUR/All Kids

Can Character Search winner, Connor

Gordon. After being introduced by

Connor last season in a live-action

segment, Lydia now moves into El-

wood City as an animated character.

In “The Wheel Deal,” Brain has to

spend some time using a wheelchair

after an injury, and is afraid his plans

to compete in a basketball

tournament for charity may be

dashed! Luckily, his new friend Lydia

happens to be a wheelchair basketball

player, and shows him how it’s done.

The story is followed by a live-action

segment featuring 10-year-old Kaitlyn,

who doesn’t let the fact that she uses

a wheelchair stop her from enjoying

life. Kaitlyn shows viewers that, like all

kids, she has homework to do, enjoys

spending time with her family, eating

Originally from

Bisbee, Arizona,

Melinda has al-

ways loved the

Southwest and

has been a resi-

dent of El Paso,

Texas for over

twenty-five years. Melinda has often

said that she has been in the desert so

long that she has "sand in her blood"!

She loves the vibrant colors the

desert has to offer, and expresses

them vividly in her work. A multi-

media artist, Melinda has been paint-

ing for twenty years. She began her

artistic journey in oils. Since then,

she has embraced pastels, which

have become her favorite medium.

Her pastel paintings are bright,

bold and vivid. She also enjoys the

experimental nature of encaustics,

which are an ancient Egyptian art

form using colored wax and a hot

iron. She enjoys the fluid nature of

watercolors and the feel and han-

dling of acrylics. Melinda is prima-

rily a self-taught artist, but she has

continued her training by attending

International Pastel Society work-

shops by well-known pastel artists

Richard McKinnley, Desmond

O'Hagan, Doug Dawson, Margaret

Evans, and many others. In addition

to the beautiful atrium studio in her

home, Melinda paints weekly out-

doors at many sites in the area as a

member of the Plein Air Painters of

El Paso. She is also an active mem-

ber of the El Paso Art Association

and the Pastel Society of El Paso

(there, a former president and current

board member). She has exhibited

and won awards in shows sponsored

by all of these organizations. Her

work has appeared on the cover of

the El Paso Scene Magazine (May

2009).

Melinda has also donated her tal-

ents to community causes such as

Buena Vida Adult Care Centers,

KCOS-TV (Public Television in El

Paso), and Hospice of El Paso.

Melinda is currentlyexhibiting at

Sunland Art Gallery at Sunland Park

Mall, in Northwest El Paso
