Last weekend, my triathlon club, Optima Racing Team did a spon-sored charity event where we vir-tually ran/cycled the distance from Kew to Tokyo (where one of our members should have been com-peting in the Olympics this year), a total of 9,556km. I contributed 100km of cycling over the weekend which helped enable the club to not only complete the distance but ac-cumulate over 12,000km. More im-portantly, nearly £10,000 has been raised to date for two excellent charities, the Princess Alice Hospice and Duchenne UK. Harry 3OH

abundance – “a large quantity of something (usually something good)”

From the Latin abundans (= “overflowing”), which is in turn based on the word unda, meaning “a wave”.

Johnny wondered at the abundance of birds which seemed to be visiting the garden every morning. There certainly seemed to be more around now there was less noise from traffic and planes.

‘a true ecological approach … must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor’ Pope Francis, Laudato Si This week is ‘Laudato Si’ week – recognising the 5th anniversary of Laudato Si – a letter written by Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church – to everyone on our planet. It asks us to take better care of our common home – the Earth. This 4-minute CAFOD animation explains how ‘the world can’t wait – so let’s make our start today’ - https://youtu.be/KOgF2Kgel6k. It could be a good conversation-starter around why small changes in the way we live can make a difference. This week’s Young Climate Warriors challenge recognising that ‘the world can’t wait’ encourages children to make small changes to the way they live – and to ‘make a start today’. They are challenged to reduce their use of plastic by helping to ‘banish the clingfilm and plastic food bags’- and come up with inventive alternatives to store leftover food.

In the Arctic, each litre of sea ice contains as many as 12,000 pieces of microplastic – this is reducing the ocean’s ability to ‘store’ carbon.

Globally, over 90% of plastic goes unrecycled, even if it’s put in a recycling bin, partly because some products are really tricky to recycle.

This Ted-ed video shows what happens to 3 different plastic bottles after they have been thrown away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6xlNyWPpB8

In 2019, annual carbon emissions from plastic

production and disposal had the same climate

impact as 189 coal-fired power stations.

Around 40% of the plastic produced was for single-

use packaging.
