Koro{ka (Carinthia) comprisesthree valleys – the Me`i{ka dolina,the Dravska dolina and the Mislinjskadolina valleys, and three mountainranges – the Pohorje, the Karavankeand the Savinjske Alpe, that mark thelandscape with an independentoriginality and solidity. A little abovea thousand square kilometres andsome more than 74 000 inhabitantsput this region amongst the smallestin Slovenia. It is also one of the oldestSlovenian industrial regions. Theprevious centuries gave start to miningin the area (the beginnings of miningallegedly go back to the Roman era);and afterwards ironworks and woodindustry have fluorished here. Koro{ka is amongst the mostmountainous Slovenian regions. 90percent of the land is covered bygradients, mostly pre-Alpine hills. Thegreatest and most frequently visitedmountain peaks here are Peca, Raduhaand Ur{lja gora, while Ol{eva is lessvisited and so even more attractive.

The nature presented Slovenia with woodsmore generously than most Europeancountries. In this view Koro{ka is one ofthe chosen lands and as such a preciouspearl in the mosaic of Slovenia. Nowadays,when people run from the urban centres asecological-tourist emmigrants, looking forhealth and peace of the soul in places witha lot of woods, this fact has a specialimportance.

The woods of Koro{ka are special for asignificant outline of the dark green ofspruce, in hights thinned by larch-trees.These are the perfect home of a mostremarkable, but highly endangeredinhabitant of the wood – the heath-cock.

The mountains of Koro{ka aresignificant for the whiteness of theirsun-lit rocks and the softness of thehill-sides. The peaks are thereforeoffering relaxing views of the quietvalleys, the dark green of the vastwoods and the fleeting sparks of waterdrops. This mountain area also attracts

inquisitive mountaineers with a specialcharm of wilderness, offering todisclose around 400 million years oldtracks of the Tetis ocean bumping intothe rocks of Peca.

Attractive blossoms of rare andendangered alpine plants fascinatethose who go to mountains toinvigorate their body as well as theirsoul.

There is no other place you can listento its significant woos as much as here.The vastness of the west Pohorje alsobelongs to Koro{ka. The woods thereare dark and deep, at places almostimpassable primeval forests; mostlyovergrown by conifers. A majesticSgerm’s spruce grows on Ribni{koPohorje and, with its 61,8 m, it is thehighest tree in Central Europe.People of Koro{ka think of the tree asan ancient symbol of life. The oldfarmhouses in Koro{ka are therefore

surrounded by magnificent lime-trees,growing there for hundreds of yearsas a pride of the farmers and aprominent ornament of the land.The most special amongst them is“the mother of all Slovenian lime-trees”, over 770 years old Najevskalipa lime-tree. Its voluminousness aswell as the interesting story about itsbeginning as a marker for a burriedTurkish treasure have made it famousand Slovenian politicians have nowbeen annually meeting around it.

There is one more gem hidden in ourmountains. Where the Karavankerange in the east rise up to the sky, avalley of unique beauty and charmextends under the mighty walls of Peca– the Regional park of Topla. A loverof nature’s foot stops and his heartjumps when his eye is trying to catch,at least for a moment, the uniquenessof soft beards of mountain grasslandand the freedom of morning views.

Koro{ka is a unique, autochthonousworld of solitary farms dispersed acrossthe sunny highland. The land betweenOl{eva, the Dravsko polje field and theAustrian border is the largest area ofsolitary farms in Slovenia. Shinglecovered farmhouses together with otherfarm buildings are crowded on steepslopes, appearing like small settlements.People here call them “celk”.

Many generations had to put a lot ofhard work, inventiveness and folk-architectural creativity into them becauseof remoteness and meanness of the land.Therefore many archaic signatures offolk architecture from the 17th centuryhave been kept until today. Such are,before all, wooden granaries –functionally designed buildings withexceptional artistic decorations – usuallyindependent buildings used for keepingcereals, flour and meat. There are also“black kitchens”, mills, saw-mills andoften even small forges. And, not last,pushed to the edge of the property thereare small cottages for the subsistent,the aged farmers and the decrepitfarmhands.

Unseparable on slopes of Koro{ka,woods and brooks indicate the trueculture of a country, as the ecologistssay. Interesting waterfalls, skipping andpurling cascades, refreshingly coolwells, pools like from a fairyland,

Knowing all these things nobody willmarvel over ancient local stories aboutmagical springs of “live” water healingevery disease, bringing back the youthand turning away death.The most famous of the springs withsuch pure, alkaline and non-sulfuricwater is the Rimski vrelec spring nearKotlje.

Ancient farm work customs likesteljaraja, jaj~arija, gnojvo`a, elsewherelong forgotten, are still kept on thesefarms. People on these farms can stilltell many tales about goblins, giants andother local fairies like prekmandelc, ajdi,{kopnek, gozdni mo`, `al `ene and divjajaga. Their ancestors knew how to bringhome spirituality and joy of the aesthetic.

Living by and of the woods their carvedor painted front doors, cupboards,sideboards and chests are still a proofof their skill. These farmhouses are alsofamous for their excellent home cuisine,their first-class, sweet and sharp, cider,and the matchless views of the countrybelow.

Antique hamlets, originally emergingfrom the high hill-sides which shelteredthe first settlements, spreaded towardsthe valleys and are still a part of thecultured country. The densely overbuiltsettlements in the valleys have, throughcenturies, taken the role of localadministration centres, while the townof Slovenj Gradec, especially since 13th

century, has developed into a greater,regional administration centre. The town-planning, keeping the historical coreinside the frames of a medieval townwall, has successfully kept the integrityof the town’s image. The secondarysettling of the hills is more recent; small“islands” of solitary farms in the middleof woods are significant. These remoteand almost inaccessible farms have kepttheir archaic originality until today, as

This diversitymirrors many autochtonous features,characteristic for the country of Koro{ka, placingit among the most culturally attractive parts ofSlovenia. Ivy-overgrown and demolished walls ofthe most ancient and later abandonedcastles in Koro{ka awaken imagination.Images of mighty aristocrats, the countsAnde{ki and Vuzeni{ki, as well as thebishops of Bamberg and their Gu{tanjministry, who, foremost in the 13th

century, made the local history, raise inour minds. The earliest remnants, fromthe 11th century, can be found on castlehill above Stari trg pri Slovenj Gradcuand near Ir{tajn on Pa{ki Kozjak, morerecent are those above Dravograd,Vuzenica and Radlje; the mostpicturesque and still magnificent are theruins of Vodri` Castle in the middle ofthe woods below Ur{lja gora. Barelyhealed wounds of the 15th century’sviolent wars for succession and the 16thcentury’s religious discords enabledgenerous renaissance and baroquearchitecture to prosper and leave theirmark on numerous country castles andmansions. The most important and themost beautiful among them is RavneCastle, made even more attractive by alarge English park, planted by the countsThurn at the end of the 19th century.

Among many castles that had once beena decoration to the coloured Mislinjskaand Dravska dolina valleys only townmanor Rotenturn in Slovenj Gradec andBukovje manor near Dravograd haveavoided the consequences of time andthe flames of World War II.

Old Christian chapel and tombs inside thechurch of St. George (sv. Jurij) at Legen fromthe first half of the 9th century are the onlymaterial proof of early Christian communitiesin the territory of the one-time greatCaranthania. Most churches have a 12th- or 13th-century core, and romanesque belfries withchoirlofts are a local particularity. Thearchitecture of the church of St. Vitus (sv. Vid)in Dravograd, the earliest documented example(from 1177) of this type of architecture inSlovenia, is extremely loquacious. Rotundasused to stand inward the churchyards; theformer were usually simple, but sometimesstoreyed ossuaries with a circular ground plan,such as is the ossuary in Libeli~e near Dravogradfrom the first half of the 13th century, and theeven more remarkable and ambitiouslydesigned round church of St. John the Baptist

(sv. Janeza Krstnika) in Spodnja Muta.The church of St. Pancras (sv. Pankracij) atGrad above Stari trg near Slovenj Gradec fromaround 1240 is an exceptional and distiguishedmonument. There are few churches of theGothic architectural style from the 15th and the16th century that are preserved in their originalmedieval form such as the prominent twinchurches of St. Wolfgang (sv. Volbenk) and St.Anne (sv. Ana) in Le{e above Prevalje, and the

hospital church of the Holy Spirit (sv. Duh) inSlovenj Gradec. The rest of the churches’medieval architectural partition is concealedby baroque reconstructions; only as localparticularities there are some Gothicpresbyteries with low outer pillars stillpreserved. The taste of the old-fashionedconservatism conveying respect of thetraditional values has also been responsiblefor the outward form of the church with thegreatest height above sea level in Slovenia.

In 1602 the neighbouring farmers, with agenerous donation of the bishop of Ljubljana,Toma` Hren, finished the church of St. Ursula(sv. Ur{ula) on Ur{lja gora. Since then it hasbeen the mother of all churches of Koro{ka,dominating on the 1696 metres high solitaryKaravanke mountain.

Strategic position of the draftyborderland between Koro{ka and[tajerska has always been dictating avivacious cultural and artisticcirculation. Echoes of the greatnorthern and south-western centres’artistic achievements were hereadditionally refined by a rich localtradition, turning up with quite originalresults. Simple folk-painters andcarvers have decorated not only thesuccursal country churches’ altars, butalso numerous marks and smallchapels on the paths between solitaryKoro{ka farms; and they still use thetypical old samples and patterns. Onceevery apiary in Koro{ka used to havedecorated front parts of beehives;today these decorations represent atreasure-house of folk-motives – theykeep a rich collection of decorated

The skills of wood carvers andother traditional home manufacturers,particularly wickerworkers, blacksmithartsmen and sellers of honey andsweetmeats made with honey, havenot only survived the centuries, buthave, through various kinds ofentertainment and shows, especiallywith Slovene biennial exhibition of Artsand Crafts in Slovenj Gradec, beenraised to a mastery.

A more ambitious fine-arts heritagecan be found in parish churches of the

valley market-towns and towns. Themedieval town of Slovenj Gradecprospered with well-known carvingworkshops in the baroque 17th andespecially in the 18th centuries, whenimportant artistic and applied-artworkshops of the Scobl, Strauss andMersi families operated here.

Internationally renownedsculptors’ symposium FormaViva used to represent thecentre of artistic life in Ravne.In decades after World WarII, under patronage of theRavne ironworks, itcontributed a collection of

thirty monumental steel statuaries that mean anenlivenment of the urban environment of the Me`i{kadolina valley. Many important local and foreign artists’sculptures can also be found at selected Slovenj Gradecoutdoor ambiences.

A sensitive spiritual heritage and an invaluable historicalmemory have also interweaved the work of Koro{kaliterary and musical giants: Pre`ihova bajta cottageabove Kotlje invites us to the world of Lovro Kuhar, thewriter; Sele under Ur{lja gora are an idyllically remotevillage, once home to Franc Ksaver Me{ko, the writer;the loquacity of the middle-class atmosphere of thehouse in Slovenj Gradec in which Hugo Wolf, the famoussolo composer, was born. Their followers, Dr. FrancSu{nik, Leopold Suhodol~an, Janez Mrdav{i~ and LojzeLebi~, the composer, have brought the recognizableidiom of Koro{ka to present time; though the charm ofthe times gone by and the still present relics of the pastare most authentically, and immediately, echoed in thelyrical and melancholic folk songs, in the words of theoriginal self-taught authors (“bukovniki”), such as wasBla` Mavrel from Strojna, and the alluring dialect of the

carvings made by folk-carvers, such as was GregorLipovnik from Dobrije.

The rich tradition dictated themodern culturaldevelopment: already beforeWorld War II the SlovenjGradec vicar Jakob Sokli~opened the first publicmuseum in Koro{ka and afterthe war sponsored the raisingof Koro{ka Art Gallery. Whileits international collectioncomprises works of manyforeign masters of modernart, a special attention is paidto local artists: the pioneerof modern Slovene statuary,Fran Berneker, and highlyvalued modern artists suchas Bogdan Bor~i~ , KarelPe~ko, Andrej Gro{elj, AntonRepnik, Naca Rojnik, Sa{oVrabi~ and the authenticallyoriginal Jo`e Tisnikar.

Carinthian Regional Museumwith its two divisions – one inRavne, the other in SlovenjGradec – provides public serviceswith all the fundamentalmuseum departments forkeeping and preserving themobile cultural heritage of theregion, with many collectionsscattered across all thecommunities of Koro{ka.

Technical heritage is a part of industrial heritage that keeps the memory of historical tools, machines and other devicesused for extraction of lead in the mountain chain of Peca, from the 17th to the 20th century, and for extraction of browncoal in Le{e, from 1822 to 1935. It also reminds us of forging of nails, wiredrawing, production of iron and steel, scythes,plough tails, ploughshares, axes, hoes and other tools, used by inhabitants of ^rna, Me`ica, Ravne na Koro{kem, Mutaand Mislinja in the 17th and the 18th centuries. The preserved work units and machines bear witness of technical andtechnological achievements of the ironworks and steelworks in the 19th and the 20th centuries in Koro{ka, of use ofbrown coal at gaining steel, of the Rosthorns ironworks’ production of rails for railways in surroundings of Vienna andnorthern Italy, of the Thurns steelworks’ high-quality steel, which is still world-wide known, of raft transport along theDrava river, of railway conveyance to Maribor (built in 1863) and to Velenje (built in 1899). Abandoned buildings, togetherwith other preserved material evidence, tell about the left off work units, such as blast-furnace in Sv. Primo` (1782–1833),glassworks and glass furnace in Hudi Kot and Josipdol (1799–1908), and trade sawmills, impelled by water power, thathave been a part of the timber industry since World War II.

There has been a long history of miningin Koro{ka, as its beginnings descendfrom 1665. Me`ica lead and zinc mineis amongst the oldest mines in thispart of Europe; mining between Pecaand Ur{lja gora went on for over 330years. Miners dug up over 1.000kilometres of galleries and shafts.Today’s generations are therefore leftwith a rich technical, natural andcultural heritage to offer it, properlyarranged, to tourists.

The first written documents that mention raftingwork on the Drava are from 1280. Rafting workwas the most important economic branch in the19th and the 20th centuries in the Dravska dolinavalley. Then raftsmen (flosarji) conveyed woodalong the river all the way to Hungary, Serbia andRumania. Their work was tiresome and dangerousbecause of their bold fighting against the whirls,but it was well-paid. The bygone water adventuresare today made safe for you to experience themon real rafts, made specially for tourist rafting onthe Drava. The rafting includes a richentertainment and music programme.

The woods in hills and mountains ofKoro{ka are overspread with carttracks and forest roads, suitable forall visitors. Panoramic ridges areaccessible with pathways that mosttimes lead to the best viewpoints.

The European pathway E6 runs overthe country of Koro{ka. Alpinists liketo follow the Slovene mountaintransversal and go for a hike to themuch liked viewpoint peaks of Kozjak,Pohorje, Ur{lja gora, Smrekovec andto some more difficult ascents to Peca,Ol{eva and Raduha.

Free climbing has become a verypopular sport without age limits, as itis supposed to be quite safe, if youregard its rules. There are many highquality places for climbing in Koro{ka:Burjakove pe~i in the Topla valley,Matvoz in Javorje, [tenge aboveMe`ica, Kot above Prevalje, Votla pe~near Ravne na Koro{kem, Zabri~nikovape~, climb Sele and Kalvarija andPerkolica near Radlje ob Dravi.The Burjakove pe~i climb with itsheight and quality of rock is specialfor Slovene standards. There is alsoone of the largest boulder climbs inthe Topla valley.

Natural, home-made and traditionalare the words to describe the culinaryart of Koro{ka. We are above all proudof our specific autochthonous foodcustoms and dishes. They have theirsource in natural production and inthe original traditional recipes.Therefore Koro{ka cuisine keeps manydishes that have been long forgottenelsewhere. The preparation of thesedishes namely demands a lot ofexpertise, care and time. Thehousewives and landlords (birti) herestill know how to cook klocavi nudlni(dried fruit noodles), {trukli (a specialkind of dumplings), o`ejeni `ganki(hard-boiled corn mush), mav`eljniand me`erli (special dishes of Koro{ka)and grumpi (cracklings) that promptthe culinary experience already withtheir uncommon names. A specialty ofKoro{ka is its famous black rye bread.It is made by an old unwritten recipeand baked in baker’s oven it still tastesthe same even after a few days.Koro{ka is also famous for its deliciousmo{t (cider), a traditional drink, madewith fermentation of juice from oldapple sorts. Ingredients:Lamb or veal heart and lights; 10 dag of white bread, cut into small cubes;1 to 2 eggs, lard, milk, marjoram, onion, salt, pepper, cream.

Preparation:Mince cooked pluck. Roast a chopped onion in lard. Soak bread cubes in milkand mix with eggs and minced pluck. Add spices: marjoram, the roasted onion,salt, pepper and some cream. Put this mixture in a baking tin and cover with therest of the cream. Bake and serve with potato salad.

MUTA (area of 39 km2, 3.670 inhabitants, 382 m above sea level)The Muta community lies in a natural cradle between the Pohorje, the Drava and theKobansko. The principal town, Muta, was marked with forges and ironworks over the past.The Muta museum has been faithfully preserving this long-continued trade. Among thenumerous cultural monuments the Kienhofen manor, today's museum's premises, shouldbe mentioned as well as the round succursal church of St. John the Baptist (sv. JanezaKrstnika). MISLINJA (area of 112 km2, 4.736 inhabitants, 598 m above sea level)A random traveller might think of Mislinja, the principal town of the Mislinja community, asno more than a town with a church and a few houses by the main road, but actually it is afusion of five former settlements. The development of the town is connected with its positionon the antique road Celeia–Colatio–Virunum, which enabled the trade, the transport andthe ironworks to blossom. The ironworks in Mislinja started already in 1724. Visitors todayadmire the churches of St. Lenart and St. Ahac as well as the Robnik forge and archeologicalfinds in Dov`e - villa rustica. ^RNA NA KORO[KEM (area of 156 km2, 3.566 inhabitants, 575 m above sea level)The community of ^rna na Koro{kem is a picturesque one. Its principal town, ^rna, is knownas the most beautiful tourist place in the Me`i{ka dolina valley, and it is famous for itstraditional Tourist week of Koro{ka. ^rna's natural pearls are the wonderful alpine valleysof Topla, Koprivna and Bistra. The history of the oldest Slovenian lime-tree Najevska lipaat Ludranski Vrh above ^rna goes back to the Turkish invasions of this country. There arealso imaginatively arranged mining and ethnological collections in the centre of the townto remind us of the times gone by. In the town itself, there are ski slopes which are consideredto be the cradle of some top Slovenian skiers, owing to whom ^rna is known as “the villageof the Olympians”.I: www.crna.si

ME@ICA (area of 26 km2, 3.885 inhabitants, 491 m above sea level)The principal town of this community, idyllical town of Me`ica, is the Alpine and miningcentre, as its name indicates, of the Me`i{ka dolina valley. While already the Romans weremining under Mt. Peca, today the Peca underground is turned into a tourist mine andmuseum. There are beautiful and nicely kept forest roads and mountain paths leading toall the surrounding hills. Some of these roads and paths lead to the Dom na Peci mountainhut where king Matja` sleeps in the nearby cavern. DRAVOGRAD (area of 105 km2, 8.881 inhabitants, 362 m above sea level)The community is the geographical centre of three valleys: the Me`i{ka, the Mislinjska andthe upper Dravska dolina valleys. Its principal town, Dravograd, has grown from an oldmarket town under an ancient castle to a modern settlement, divided between the left andthe right Drava banks. The town that once had a tollhouse later became the Drava navigationquay and afterwards a big railway crossing. In the Dravograd community there are manytraces of history. Prominent rafters who nowdays transport tourists on the Drava, the famousRoman church of St. Vid in Dravograd, the remarkable Libeli~e ossuary and the Dravogradmuseum collection recording the Nazi violence are distinctive. PODVELKA (area of 104 km2, 2.701 inhabitants, 330 m above sea level)Podvelka, the principal town of a new community, is an interesting settlement on the rightDrava bank. In the past this town only served as a home to forestry workers who preparedthe alluvial wood for sale. The uninhabited neighbouring hill slopes are nowadays a paradisefor visitors looking for peace, freshness of nature and pure forest air. These beauties canbe experienced on Jan`evski vrh, Javnik and Lehen na Pohorju. The tourists especiallyappreciate raft rides on Drava, in tourist village of Javnik, as well as church of St. John (Sv.Janez) at Jan`evski vrh which is known for its extraordinary strong positive energy withhealing effects. RADLJE OB DRAVI (area of 94 km2, 6.241 inhabitants, 370 m above sea level)Radlje ob Dravi is also the name of this community's principal town, which was settled as farback as the antiquity. Therefore in the Middle Ages the town already claimed the repute of oneof the oldest settlements on the Drava banks. In addition, many different Roman finds tell aboutthe respectable age of the town. On Kamen (”The Stone”) above the town once stood RadljeCastle, which was later on rebuilt into a mansion, which is nowadays surrounded by a beautifulEnglish park. Despite the remarkable time span the significant market image of the town hasbeen preserved until today. SLOVENJ GRADEC (area of 174 km2, 17.088 inhabitants, 410 m above sea level)Slovenj Gradec is the administrative, economical and cultural centre of the Mislinja Valley andalso the oldest town in the Koro{ka region, for it was granted its town charter as early as 1267.Its favourable position was provided by the shelter between Mt Ur{lja gora and the neighbouringPohorje, where tourists nowadays can choose from many well-maintained hiking and cyclingtrails. The town is known for its artists and numerous cultural and social events. You certainlyshould visit the Koro{ka Gallery of Fine Arts, the birthplace of the composer Hugo Wolf, andboth churches. VUZENICA (area of 50 km2, 2.805 inhabitants, 338 m above sea level)Vuzenica, the principal town of this community, is a central settlement, idyllically set on the leftDrava bank. Vuzenica is distinguished as one of the oldest towns in the Dravska dolina valley.Raftsmen once used to start their rafts in Vuzenica, and the carriers used to load their freighthere lively. Once numerous fairs also were vivacious. Remains of the old castle bear witnessof the former fame of Vuzenica, as well as the parish church of St. Nicholas (sv. Nikolaj). Amongits parish priests was also the gentle poet and waker of national awareness Anton MartinSlom{ek. PREVALJE (area of 58 km2, 6.629 inhabitants, 411 m above sea level)The history of Prevalje, is at the same time the history of ironwork, as the ironworks of thistown was, until its abolishment, the most important in this part of Europe. The communityis also prouding itself with its rich cultural heritage, with Roman stones found in Zagrad,with two prodigious Gothic churches at Le{e, with an exceptional technical monument –[toparjev most bridge, with the fact that here once was the headquarters of the Society ofSt. Hermagoras (Mohorjeva dru`ba) publishing company and with the idea of the ReadingBadge which was born here. Tourists should not leave out visiting the tourist village of[entanel and the scene of the last battles of World War II in Europe – Poljana and the Holmecborder crossing where, in 1991, one of the most important battles of the independence warof Slovenia took place. RAVNE NA KORO[KEM (area of 63 km2, 12.132 inhabitants, 394 m above sea level)Ravne is the biggest town in Koro{ka region. It is the town of ironworkers, Forma Viva steelsculptures and a profusion of books. While rich fonds of The Central Carinthian Library bearwitness of cultural development, interesting museum collections tell about the history ofironwork. On the Pre{ki Vrh above Kotlje there is the Pre`ihova bajta shack, consolidatingthe memory of the writer Lovro Kuhar – Pre`ihov Voranc. There is Ivar~ko jezero lake underthe wide Ur{lja gora welcoming you in summer and the snowy hillsides with ski slopes inwinter. RIBNICA NA POHORJU (area of 59 km2, 1.272 inhabitants, 715 m above sea level)Ribnica na Pohorju, the principal town of a relatively new community, is a small clusteredsettlement on the north side of the Pohorje range. There was a Roman road leading fromSlovenske Konjice through Ribnica to the Dravska dolina valley. The town is surrounded by vastand dark Pohorje woods, therefore people here have always been occupied with forestry andsaw mills as well as stockbreeding. Ribnica today is an idyllic climate tourist village withbungallows, ski slopes and well developed farm tourism. Ribnica also is a pleasant startingpoint for mountain paths towards Ribni{ka ko~a and Jezerski vrh. In Jospipdol, there is one ofthe first educational forest trails, Kapelvald, a treasure house of various tree species.We get to know natural beauty, the importance of a forest, and the history and way of living inthis part of Pohorje.
