Presdient’s Pop In
Hello KAY Supporters and Alumni!
The 2013 KAY Camp theme "Leadership Roundup" is fitting for our first KAYAN Newsletter. Those involved with the KAY program as camp staff are passionate about helping our KAY Clubs to be successful in their respective communities.
We hope that you will join us in providing assistance to a KAY Club in your area. As a new and evolving Alumni Network we know the KAY Program is unique, thus KAYAN will be just as unique in how we assist our clubs throughout the State of Kansas.
As KAYAN leaders, we are "rounding up" ideas as to how we can move forward with your alumni network. We look forward to hearing from you and keeping in touch with you through the newsletter, email, mail and social media. For the future of KAY, Teresa L. Clounch
Once a KAY Member, Always a KAY Member:
Join KAYAN! Over 65 years ago, Miss Wanda May
Vinson had a vision, and through hard work that vision became a reality. Now, junior high
and high school students from across the state have the opportunity to learn leadership skills,
serve others, and build character as members of the Kansas Association for Youth. Although
your high school days are over, as a member of
KAYAN, the Kansas Association for Youth Alumni Network, you have the privilege of
supporting the KAYs of Kansas. Once a KAY member, always a KAY member!
Starting an organization takes time, talent, and resources. For the past year, 77
former KAY members have given their time, volunteered their talents, and become a member of KAYAN in order to support this
organization financially. KAYAN needs your continued assistance.
Charter Member: If you would like to hold the distinction of being a founding member of KAYAN, consider becoming a Charter
Member. The planning and organizing of this association began during the 65th anniversary of
the KAY organization and we chose $65 as the charter membership cost in honor of the 65
years of the organization. This one time donation of $65.00 can be submitted now through December 31, 2013.
Regular Member: If you wish to support the KAY clubs across Kansas, consider becoming a
member of KAYAN. This dues donation of $25 can be submitted at any time between July
1, 2013 and June 30, 2014. To maintain
membership status, you must renew your regular
membership each fiscal year.
If you have not joined KAYAN, but would like to do so, please fill out an electronic
membership form, found on our website www.kayankansas.org, and submit your
payment. Payments should be mailed to: KAYAN
11184 Antioch, Box #251 Overland Park, KS 66210
Do you have friends and relatives who might be interested in supporting the KAYs across
Kansas by becoming a member of KAYAN? If so, please spread the word!

“YES I CAN!”
At KAY Leadership Camp there are certain terms that will always be “ours.” Superfantastic will always be used. This adjective has become as commonly used as Cheryl’s name at camp. This year Cheryl brought a new saying to camp. Throughout camp Cheryl would ask, “Can you do it?” The campers would respond with, “Yes I can!” The call and response helped to promote confidence and instill self worth throughout the week. The campers came to Rock Springs ready to increase their leadership skills, and
did they do it? Yes they did!
“I am thrilled with the creation of KAYAN! The KAY program has touched the lives of thousands of Kansas students since its start 67 years ago. To
paraphrase what our founder reminded us so many times, I believe that KAYAN will also
follow suit – “AS KAYAN GOES, SO GOES THE KAY PROGRAM”. Long live “OUR ORGANIZATION”.
Cheryl Gleason, KAY State Director
Balancing Technology with Traditions: As much as things
change they stay the same Leadership Roundup was the theme that brought 240
campers to KLC this year. “It was our finest session ever.” KLC is
based on many traditions and many of these are still in place today. On Tuesday night select staff spoke, reflecting on things we’ve
learned and leaders we’ve become through our involvement with the KAY organization. We continue to have Fun Night on Wednesday where campers work on brainstorming, preparing and participating
in leadership presentations. They have the opportunity to actively learn skills they can use in their schools and throughout their life.
They learn to breakdown a large project into parts, brainstorm, form committees to complete the work, perform the presentation and then
process how the project went and what they learned. Thursday night continues to be a night of celebration and reflection with our banquet and campfire tradition. We continue to take a vow of
silence and walk to the campfire single file as we reflect on our week and what we have learned. When we leave the campfire we reach
out to take the hand of another to help symbolize the friendships we have made. Many of you may remember the black and white camp
photos taken by Mr. Bobo on the hill. While we still take a camp photo, our photos are now digital and posted on the KAY website to share with everyone. The last few years there have been additional
changes such as air conditioning in the dining
hall, meeting rooms, and housing. This makes
for a better learning environment. Instead of
watching the butter and Jello melt in the dining
hall and wiping sweat, campers can enjoy their
meals and take notes comfortably during
meetings. A KAY staff member created a daily
blog that was posted on KSHSAA’s website. This
blog allowed those not at KAY Leadership Camp
the ability to follow our activities each day.

Treasurer’s Report We are currently working on fundraising
efforts in conjunction with our membership
and marketing committee. We have
extended the deadline for charter
memberships to December 31st 2013. We are
currently accepting funds for membership for
the July 2013 fiscal year. We have secured
funds to meet our operating expenses to
date. We are continuing to work with our
marketing and membership committee for
our fundraising needs.
501(c)(3) Update
We are currently in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) status. This allows us to be a tax-exempt nonprofit association. Once we have
achieved this status, donations to our organization will be tax deductible for federal
income tax purposes. This process has been little more time consuming than we anticipated.
It is typically about a 3-month process, but we are still in a holding pattern waiting on approval from the IRS. There is currently a significant
backlog in approval of 501(c)(3) organizations due to a myriad of reasons including closer
scrutiny of non-profit organizations as well as government furloughs. We will let everyone
know as soon as we have been granted 501(c)(3) status. You will probably hear the cheers of joy and celebration from the KAYAN board
members!
We Need You!!!!
Area Presidents help clubs in their Area, and now you can help an Area by serving as an Area Coordinator! Clubs are looking for
volunteers to help with various projects and events. The Area Coordinator will work with KAYAN volunteers to gather requests
and assign volunteers to assist clubs in the Area. We have commitments from KAYAN members to serve as Area
Coordinators, yet, we need to fill a few more positions. If you are interested in serving as an Area Coordinator OR as a KAYAN volunteer who is willing to assist Clubs, then contact us at
[email protected]! We look forward to hearing from you!
