Namaskar! Warm greetings and welcome to the tenth edition of KEC Newsletter! Writing the editorial for the tenth issue of KEC Newsletter is exhilarating! We’ve indeed come a long way. This semester, KEC hosted various talk programmes including that from a celebrated scholar Wolfgang Korn. We also strengthened the ties with fellow institutions like University of Houston by hosting an interaction programme facilitated by Prof. Jaspal Subhlok. Moreover, KEC entered a Memorandum of Understanding with network of Universities UNITWIN at Handong Global University in South Korea with an appreciative initiation of our Principal Asso. Prof. Chand S. Rana. We are proud to share that our faculty Sr. Lec. Subash Phuyal’s research paper was selected for the esteemed International Journal of Emerging Technologies and Innovative Research. Also, Sr. Lec. Ganesh Gautam won the best paper for his presentation in JENESYS 2016 hosted in Japan. Similarly, students of KEC secured first position in the Drone competition and Tech Bihani 3.0 and third position in RoboAkhada and Mechtrix 4.0. Also, the win by KEC students continued in the international Arcasia Students’ design competition. Even the best thesis award for the year was won by KEC’s Sadixya Pant. KEC, continuing to be proactive in sports, organised a week-long sports event where more than 1000 students, faculty and staff participated in various games. Similarly, KEC managed to lift the winner’s cup for the intercollege futsal competition too. Furthermore, this semester, the much awaited Student Council Election was held with a fair turnout of 88 percent students casting their votes and electing Mr. Purna Bahadur Khadka as the president of the council. We congratulate him and the entire team for the win and wish them a successful tenure. KEC hopes to maintain the momentum to avail quality education and yield professionals who will excel not only in Nepal but all over the world as well. In this regard, we would like to thank all the stakeholders, students, parents and well-wishers for their continual support to this institution to attain academic and professional excellence. This semester, KEC hosted various talk programmes including that from a celebrated scholar Wolfgang Korn. Talk Programme with Prof. Jaspal Subhlok, Kathmandu Engineering College,

Kathmandu Engineering College organised a talk programme on ‘Emerging opportunities in a world of growing data networked device’ in its premises on 1 Poush 2073. The program was facilitated by Prof. Jaspal Subhlok of University of Houston, USa. During the programme, Prof. Subhlok discussed how recent advances in fields such as networking, distributed computing, and machine intelligence have led to significant opportunities for data collection and analysis covering many facets of our lives. He further enlightened the participants that advances in multimedia data analytics enable new and effective ways of delivering educational content to the students. Prof. Subhlok is the Chair of the Computer Science Department in the University of Houston. His research interests are primarily focused on Parallel and Distributed Computing and Educational Technologies.

Workshop on ‘Roles of women in controlling traffic accident’, Kalimati,

26 Kartik 2073

The Community Service Center and Community Police Service Kuleshwor along with Metropolitan Police Kalimati co-organised a one day workshop on ‘Roles of women in controlling traffic accident’ at Kalimati Banquet Party Palace in KMC Ward No. 13 on 26 Kartik 2073. Female faculty and staff members of Kathmandu Engineering College were invited to attend this workshop. Sr. Lec. archana rijal, Deputy Head of Department of Electrical Engineering along with a few female students of KEC attended the workshop.

The programme highlighted current traffic situation and included a discussion on traffic rules and regulations. The workshop also encouraged participants to follow traffic lane rules, traffic signs, maintain speed and discouraged driving under influence. This collective effort aimed at reducing traffic accidents so that all citizens can feel safe in their city.

Establishment of Student Welfare Committee, Kathmandu Engineering College,

15 Mangsir 2073

on 15 Mangsir 2073, a Student Welfare Committee was established in KEC under the coordination of Asso. Prof. Mahesh Singh Kathayat, advisor of Department of Computer Engineering. Similarly, Sr. Lec. Biswo Raj Kaphale, hostel warden, was designated Member Secretary while Asso. Prof. Bed Prasad Pandey (Secretary to Monitoring Unit), Asso. Prof. Kailash Shrestha (Head of Department of architecture), lec. arjun Poudel (Head of Department of Civil Engineering), Sr. Lec. Rajan Lama (Chief, Guidance and Counseling) and Sr. Lec. Madan Neupane were appointed as members of the committee.

Sports Week, Kathmandu Engineering College, 11-17 Poush 2073

A week-long Sports Week was organised by the college from 11 Poush to 17 Poush 2073 in coordination with student bodies. The participants showcased their athletic side in KEC premises and other local gaming grounds. The programme was inaugurated by the Chairman of the college Prof. Hirendra Man Pradhan and Asso. Prof. Chand S. Rana, Principal of the college, in presence of the faculty, staff and students.

During the sports week, all football games were organised at Armed Police Force’s Halchowk ground while cricket was played in Modern Indian School premises, Chobhar. Besides these games, all others - Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Chess and Tug of War- were smoothly organised at the college premises. The marathon route started from the Main Gate of the college. Students of KEC along with the faculty and staff enthusiastically participated in the above mentioned games.

Academic Enhancement Programme, Bhangeri Durbar resort, Nagarkot, 2 & 3 Poush 2073

Kathmandu Engineering College organised a two-day academic enhancement program at Bhangeri Durbar resort, Nagarkot on 2 and 3 Poush 2073. The chairman, managing director, principal, board members, advisors, heads of departments, faculty members and senior staff of the college participated in the program. The event comprised of workshops along with refreshment and recreational activities.

on the first day of the programme, the heads of various departments conducted presentations concerning the analysis of results, review of the previous semester and plans for the running semester. The day concluded with a presentation by Lec. Arjun Poudel, Head of Department of Civil Engineering, comprising summarized inputs from all departments. Similarly, on the second day of the programme, advisors of various departments gave a review on their respective departments. Also, board member Mr.

The 14th National Technological Fair – loCUS 2017 was organised by loCUS, institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus with the theme ‘Renovating Society’ in the categories of thematic hardware, thematic software, thematic electrical, open hardware, open software, open electrical, most innovative, most applicable, people’s choice, and +2 project award.

Saraswati Puja, Kathmandu Engineering College, 19 Magh 2073

Kathmandu Engineering College organised the annual Saraswati Puja in the college premises on 19 Magh 2073. The puja was followed by a Bisarjan. The college administration organised the puja in coordination with the students. Prof. Hirendra Man Pradhan, Chairman of KEC; Asso. Prof. Chand S Rana, Principal, KEC along with the Heads and Deputy Heads of Departments, faculty members, staff and students attended the puja. Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge, language, music and arts in Hindu mythology.

Similarly, discussion of future plans for KEC’s growth was delivered by Mr. Rajendra Shakya, Managing Director of KEC. The event concluded with the appraisal speech from the Chairman of KEC Prof. Hirendra

Computer Engineering and Department of Electrical Engineering from different years of their academics participated in the fair. The participants from KEC won the thematic software category with their 'Annual Harvest Suggestor' entry.

loCUS encourages technological innovation and creation along with engineering studies through interaction and healthy competition promoting professionalism, team spirit and leadership skills.

Man Pradhan, congratulating each department for their improved academic performance. Prof. Pradhan, through his inspiring speech, encouraged the faculty to continue the good work. The entire programme was facilitated by Er. Rajan Lama, Chief of Guidance and Counseling Unit. The two day event was a platform for interdepartmental interaction amongst the faculty members.

Sr. Lecturer Ganesh Gautam presents his paper at JENESYS 2016, Japan, 2-11 Magh 2073

Sr. lec. Ganesh Gautam, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Japan to present his paper at the JENESYS 2016 conference. The JENESYS 2016 was a telecommunication conference and Sr. Lec. Gautam’s visit was from 2 to 11 Magh 2073. Sr. Lec. Gautam visited the Earthquake Simulation

Center Tokyo and the Chips (Electronic) Manufacturing Company (MEaD Co.) Tokyo. He also visited the hypocentre of the bomb attack at Nagasaki as well as the Nagasaki University. 215 students from SAARC countries were invited to join the conference. Moreover, Sr. Lec. Gautam's paper won the best paper award during the event.

Memorandum of Understanding between KEC and Handong Global University, South Korea, 1 Chaitra 2073

Kathmandu Engineering College entered an agreement to join University Twinning and Networking (UNITWIN) with the host university Handong Global University in South Korea on 1 Chaitra 2073. KEC agreed to join the network of Universities on Capacity Building of Sustainable Development in Developing Countries in the asian Region. The two institutions aim to enhance their relations with exchange of faculty members and/or students,

joint research projects, joint degree programs, etc. The institutes entered in this understanding to develop academic and cultural exchange programs in areas of education, research and other activities to work towards the internationalization of higher education. Prof. Chamun Koo, Dean of School of Spatial Environment System Engineering signed the MoU on behalf of Handong Global University while Asso. Prof. Chand S Rana, Principal

of KEC, represented Kathmandu Engineering College. A special lecture by Principal Rana was also organised at Handong Global University which was titled “Traditional Settlements of Kathmandu”. The lecture was attended by the Dean of the university Prof. Koo along with faculty members of the school of Spatial Environments System Engineering and a huge mass of foreign and local students of the School.

Student Council Election, KEC Election Committee, 18 Falgun 2073

The election committee of KEC conducted student council election in college premises on 18 Falgun 2073. The election was facilitated by the faculty and staff and participated by students. Almost 88% of the students cast their vote in the election which was smoothly conducted by the six-member election committee headed by Mr. Mohan Krishna Shrestha, advisor, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The other members of the committee were Asso. Prof. Kailash Shrestha, Asso. Prof. Shiva Raj Baral, Asso. Prof. Ishwar Adhikari, Asso. Prof. Bimal Bhattarai, Sr. Lec. Bal Singh Rana, and Sr. Lec. Sudeep Shakya.

The students of KEC have elected Mr. Purna Bahadur Khadka as the Chairman of the new committee, Mr. Khagendra Sherchan (Bijay) as the Secretary, Ms. Alisha Gautam as the Treasurer along with the members Ms. Arati Lamichhane, Mr. Agrim

Adhikari (Riwaj), Mr. Nabindra Chalise, Ms. Manita Shrestha, Ms. Prerana oli, Mr. Buddhi raj Paudel and Mr. Yogesh Khadka through direct election. The nomination of members through “samanupatik” is under process.

Talk program by Wolfgang Korn, Kathmandu Engineering

College, 11 Chaitra 2073

Kathmandu Engineering College organised a ‘Talk Program by Wolfgang Korn’ at Seminar Hall on 11 Chaitra 2073. An architect, restorer and author by profession, Korn talked about his life and work in Nepal between 1968-1978 aD and 2013-2017 aD. Korn is the author of the popular books ‘The Traditional Architecture of the Kathmandu Valley’, ‘Traditional Newar Architecture of The Kathmandu Valley: The Shikaras’, and ‘The Traditional Newar Architecture of the Kathmandu Valley: The Stupas and the Chaityas’. These books are exemplary documentation of Korn’s extensive research on the city’s architecture and are famously revered by the students of architecture country wide. The program was attended by Asso. Prof. Chand S Rana, Principal; Asso.

Talk Programme, Nepal Engineers’ Association, 18 Chaitra 2073

Asso. Professor Mahesh Singh Kathayat, Advisor of the Department of Computer Engineering delivered a talk Programme titled “E- Governance, Role and Importance of ICTs” at the hall of the Engineer Bhawan, Pulchowk. The talk programme is a part of the series of talk programmes held every Friday by Nepal Engineers’ Association as a part of its intellectual culture and knowledge dissemination. The programme was attended by Engineers and renowned professionals representing various organizations. asso. Prof. Kathayat was felicitated by the President of the Association Er. Hareram Shrestha at completion of the programme.

Felicitation Programme for Semester Toppers, Department of Civil Engineering, 2 Bhadra 2073

Transportation Field Visit, Department of Civil Engineering, 15-17 Poush 2073

With the aim of acknowledging and promoting the academic excellence of students, the Department of Civil Engineering organised a Felicitation programme for Semester Topper in the college premises on 2 Bhadra 2073. The toppers were formally recognized in presence of heads of departments of all faculties, advisors of civil engineering department, and board members of KEC along with faculty members of the department. A total of 100 students attended the program including the semester toppers namely Mr. aman Dhakal for Year iV/i, Mr. Prabal Shrestha for Year III/I, Mr. Basanta Lekhak for Year II/I and Mr. ashish Devkota for Year i/i. Mr. ashish Devkota was also the ioE topper of his batch. The department aims to upgrade academic excellence by providing the platform that increases the exposure for students within the academic environment.

The Department of Civil Engineering organised a three days field visit to the araniko Highway and B.P. Highway for the students of Year IV/ Part I from 15 to 17 Poush 2073. The field trip was attended by 121 students and coordinated by four faculty members, Lec. Bikash Raj Joshi, Asso. Prof. Ishwar Adhikari, Asso. Prof. Bimal Bhattarai,

Survey Camp, Department of Civil Engineering, 30 Ashwin- 10 Kartik 2073

The Department of Civil Engineering organised a Survey Camp for Year III Part I students at Budhanilkantha School in Budhanilkantha from 30 Ashwin to 10 Kartik 2073. A total of 121 students participated in the camp which was coordinated by 12 teachers and assisted by 8 staff members. This extensive survey camp was organised in order to upgrade the students’ knowledge on survey and to ensure that the students are able to handle survey instruments efficiently and confidently conduct engineering survey with the required level of accuracy and efficiency. The students were also able to understand the performance and professionalism required in both field and office works. at the same time this survey also aimed at improving important professional and interpersonal skills of the students like group coordination, leadership and decision making etc.

Geology Field Visit, Department of Civil Engineering, 15- 20 Poush 2073

The Department of Civil Engineering organised a geological field visit to Malekhu for the students of Year II/ Part I of Bachelor in Civil Engineering from 15 to 20 Poush 2073. This excursion was coordinated by Lec. rabin Chaulagain, asso. Prof. Dr. Kamalkanta acharya, asso. Prof. Dr. Subesh Ghimire, and lec. Sunil Subedi. a total of 121 students attended the field visit. The main objective of the visit was to educate the students regarding the origin, characteristics and identification of different minerals as well as that of rock formation. Geology field visit is a mandated study of geological structures in block diagram and study of maps as per syllabus set by ioE.

Structural analysis Program and autoCaD Training, Department of Civil Engineering, 15 Poush 2073 to present

Hydropower Field Visit, Department of Civil Engineering, 7-9 Falgun 2073

A training program for Structural Analysis Program (SAP) and autoCaD was conducted by the Department of Civil Engineering for the final year students. The department has been conducting the training from 15 Poush 2073. This training was conducted by seven faculty members, Sr. Lec. Saraswati Thapa, Lec. Rabin Chaulagain, Lec. Ramin Shrestha, Lec. Ramesh Kaphale, Asst. Lec. Harshi Kesh

The Department of Civil Engineering organised a field visit to Lama Sanghu Sunkoshi Hydropower Project from 7 to 9 Falgun 2073. This field visit was attended by 121 students of the final year in Bachelors in Civil Engineering. The excursion was jointly coordinated by Sr. Lec. Saraswati Thapa, Lec. Shishir Rijal, Asst. Lec.

Karna, Asst. Lec. Ashish KC and Lec. Rujika Tuladhar. The training was attended by 60 students. other than providing them with the knowledge of these software, the training program also facilitates the students with the preparation for their final year project works, especially related to design and construction of buildings. The department provides SAP and autoCaD training to its final year students each year.

Prakash Ghimire and Asst. Lec. Rajan Nhemaphuki. The main purpose of the visit was to familiarize the final year students with all components of a Hydropower Plant from head to tail race, in terms of fulfilment of academic requirements. 14 Bhadra 2073The 5th Asian Paints Awards Ceremony was jointly organised by Kathmandu Engineering College and Asian Paints at KEC Seminar hall on 14 Bhadra 2073. During the ceremony, awards were distributed to top three winners of the competition. Mr. Shrawan Thakuri, Ms. Nikisha Pradhan, Mr. Pradeep Maharjan, Mr. Bhasan Gurung and Ms. Shristi Shakya, the winners of the competition, were also announced as participants for the 3rd National Level

Thesis Exhibition, ioE, 14 Ashwin 2073

A Thesis Exhibition showcasing the thesis works of graduating batch of 2068 was held at the Department of Architecture of Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus on 14 Ashwin 2073. The selected theses from three colleges affiliated to Tribhuvan University - institute of Engineering Pulchowk Campus, Kathmandu Engineering College, and, Himalaya College of Engineering- were exhibited during the event. A total of 54 theses were selected out of 124 theses presented by the three colleges. KEC exhibited 27 of 54 theses. The exhibition had huge participation of students, professionals, faculty members of all colleges, public, etc. The event is an annual affair jointly organised by the above 3 colleges in coordination with Asian Paints Nepal.

The 19th ARCASIA Awards Ceremony was organised in Hong Kong on 13 Ashwin 2073. The student level competition was organised to contribute ideas and concepts that respond to the theme ‘Green Lifestyle’. Three students of KEC who were studying Bachelor in Architecture were selected to represent Nepal in the competition. Mr. Pratik Lohani, Mr. Sanjay Neupane, and Mr. Laxman Adhikari entered the competition with their design of ‘My House in the Woods’. The trio bagged the third position in the category. They were awarded with HKD1,000 and a trophy. The shortlisted entries were also showcased at The 17th Asian Congress of Architects (ACA17) in Hong Kong in 2016.

The students were encouraged to think along the lines of cost effectiveness, energy efficiency, low carbon footprint, zero carbon emission and implementable means that may resolve an identified problem found in their particular region of Asia, or one which might even be effective when adapted in many different situations.

Competition. A total of 50 students had participated. The 5th national college level competition was organised on the theme ‘Kala Kendra - Music, Dance and art for everyone’. The final jury of the competition was held on 14 Shrawan 2073 at the KEC Seminar Hall for which the jury members were ar. anjan raj Shrestha from Design Cell Pvt. ltd. and ar. Meera Gyawali from the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction.

Following the annual practice, 31 students of Year III studying Bachelor in Architecture in Kathmandu Engineering College visited Poornima University in Jaipur to participate in the 59th annual National Association of Students of Architecture (NASA) Exhibition and educational tour from 3 to 7 Magh 2073. At the exhibition, the students participated in various on the spot events titled aeromodelling, Puppet Design, architecture De- Modelisation, World of Bamboo, Paper Pitara, Lime Jaali etc. After the exhibition, the students also used this opportunity to visit different places in India, relevant to architectural studies, and for recreation. The other cities visited by the students were Mumbai, Goa, agra and Delhi. The students were accompanied by two faculty members, Sr. Lec. Subash Phuyal and Lec. Sagun Maharjan. The team was led by Unit Secretary Dipti Mainali and Unit Designee Alisha Gautam.

The Department of architecture organised an orientation for the fresh batch of 2073 on 23 Kartik 2073 at college premises. The program was attended by Asso. Prof. Chand S Rana, Principal; Asso. Prof. Shailita Manandhar Joshi, Vice Principal; Asso. Prof. Kailash Shrestha, Head of Department of architecture; asso. Prof. Moon Singh Dangol, Deputy Head of Department of architecture; and, faculty members. The welcome speech on behalf of the department was delivered by Asso. Prof. Kailash Shrestha, then Dy. Head of Department of architecture followed by orientation presentation by Asso. Prof. Shailita Manandhar Joshi, then head of Department of Architecture. Moreover, Principal Chand S. Rana welcomed the freshers with his motivational speech during the programme. Subsequently, the students were also introduced to other faculty members. The faculty, new students and their parents also had an informative interaction programme highlighting architecture in academia and profession.

Housing and Landscape Tour, Department of Architecture, 11-15 Magh 2073

Prof. Kailash Shrestha, Head of Department, Department of Architecture, was one of the judges in a nine person panel for the Berger Rangamanch event organised by Berger Jenson & Nicholson (Nepal) Pvt. Ltd. on 7 Falgun 2073. 60 winners were selected from hundreds of entries registered between 3 Bhadra and 30 Kartik 2073 by the panel of judges. The winner selection program was held at Summit Hotel, Lalitpur. Berger launches such events for its consumers every year. In the past, Berger has organised Berger Money Kamana, Berger Dhumdham Sanga Grihapravesh, and Berger rangi-changi Utsav offer, among others.

The students attending the visit were familiarised with the ideas, materials and technologies and their practical application in development of housing, as well as rural environment and technology. KEC’s Department of architecture, SCaEF and rotary Club of Mount Everest jointly organised a lecture ‘Comparing Traditional and Engineered Phalcha - a case study of Kwen Lachhi Phalcha Restoration, Sunaguthi’ by Mr. Ananta ram Baidya, a licensed civil engineer from San Diego, California in KEC premises on 25 Falgun 2073. He is also a chairperson for Nepal Liaison Committee American Society of Nepalese Engineers and former faculty member of Kathmandu University. The program was attended by Asso. Prof. Chand S Rana, Principal; Asso. Prof. Shailita Manandhar Joshi, Vice Principal; Mr. Bed Prasad Pandey, Monitoring Secretary; Asso. Bade Foundation, USa in coordination with the Department of Architecture, Kathmandu Engineering College opened its registration for all Nepal architecture Student Design Competition for redevelopment of Dhaneswarnath temple Complex on 1 Chaitra 2073.

asian Paints renewed its contract with the Department of Architecture for the next 5 years for conducting the ‘Asian Paints College level Design Competition’. The 6th National asian Paints College level Design Competition was launched on 17 Chaitra 2073 and the registration for the competition is open. This year the competition is titled “The Club House – A leisure hub”. The submission deadline for the competition is on 22 Jestha 2074. From KEC students of Year IV Part II in Bachelors in Architecture will participate in the competition.

The Department of architecture conducted final presentation of Conservation Studio in college premises on 2 Chaitra 2073. This year, the students studied and revisited the settlement of Bode and Nagadesh, inspected its urban pattern and essence over the semester before presenting it to fellow students and faculty members. The faculty members guiding the 50 students were Asso. Prof. Moon Singh Dangol, Deputy Head of Department of Architecture, Lec. Sweta Shrestha, Lec. Manisha Rana and Lec. Kiran Joshi. The students presented their study and analysis to external jurors ar. Deepak Pant, ar. Sirish Bhatt along with Ar. Arjun Shrestha and Ar. Ram Shrestha from Madhyapur Engineering Society.

Sr. Lec. Subash Phuyal published his paper on ‘Perspective in Using Building Information Modelling Technology in Nepal’ in Volume 4 Issue 3 of India-based International Journal of Emerging Technologies and Innovative Research on 2 Chaitra 2073. In the paper, Sr. Lec. Phuyal discusses that design communication techniques are gradually changing from 2D based to integrated 3D based interface. The paper deals with the obstacles in use of BiM, and its efficiency in comparison to its contemporary Computer aided Design method. it also explores the limitations of the application in Nepalese professional practice. Sr. Lec. Phuyal observes and concludes his findings based on a case study that despite the limitations, BiM is an efficient tool for design development phase.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, KEC organised a four day educational tour to Pokhara and Sauraha from 2 to 5 Mangsir 2073. The tour was attended by the students of Year III in Bachelors in Electronics Engineering and was facilitated by four faculty members from the department namely Lec. Surendra Khatri, Sr. Lec. Madan Neupane, Sr. Lec. Sanjivan Satyal, and, Er. Rajan Lama. The main objective of the visit was to explore the theoretical knowledge from the classroom and observe its practical implementation in the field.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organised a three day training program on LaTeX programming from 6 to 8 Magh 2073 at the college premises. This training was targeted towards the faculty members of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering as well as the Department of Computer Engineering. The training was facilitated by Lec. Kunal Kumar Mishra. The objective of this training session was the professional development of the faculty members and the development of their ability to best format report writing by the use of LaTeX.

Two one day field visits to the Karmadanda Khola Micro Hydro Power Plant were organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, on 7 and 14 Magh 2073. This visit was organised for the subject of Energy Environment & Society within the academic curriculum of the program. Students of 2070 batch visited the Karamdanda Khola Micro Hydro Power Plant, Kusadevi VDC, Kavre, facilitated by faculty members lec. Manchan Tiwari and lec. asmin Aryal. The main objective of this visit was to help the students understand about Generation and Transmission systems in micro hydro power plants.

ZED Board donation from Xilinx.INC USA, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, 5 Magh 2073on behalf of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Asso. Prof. Sagun Manandhar received the donation of a ZED board from the Xilinx. iNC USa. The ZED board was contributed by Xilinx.iNC USA, and was handed over on 5 Magh 2073 at the college premises, for the Embedded Lab coursework within the program of the department. This is the first time that the concept of ZED board has been used in Nepal.

Mechtrix 4.0 – KEC students secured third position, Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, 28 Magh 2073

The Robotics Club of KEC and Electronics Club of KEC jointly participated in the Mechtrix 4.0 event organised by Kathmandu University at the university premises in Dhulikhel on 28 Magh 2073. The participation of students from KEC at the event was facilitated by faculty members Sr. lec. Nirajan Koirala and Sr. lec. Suman Sharma. During the event the participating students from KEC also secured third position.

loCUS 2017, ioE, Pulchowk Campus, 27 – 29 Magh 2073

loCUS 2017 was organised at the institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus from 27 to 29 Magh 2073. The students from Kathmandu Engineering College participated in several events and competitions that took place during loCUS 2017.

The Robotics Club of KEC and the Electronics Project Club of KEC jointly participated in the Drone Competition organised during loCUS 2017. During the competition the students of KEC bagged the first prize and secured the title of ‘Dronacharya’.

Similarly, the students of Robotics Club of KEC and Electronics Project Club of KEC jointly also participated in the Thematic Software Competition titled ‘Annual Harvester Suggestor’ where also they secured the first position.

The participants from KEC secured third position in the ‘RoboAkhada’ event during loCUS 2017. The participation of the students from KEC in loCUS 2017 was facilitated by faculty members Sr. Lec. Nirajan Koirala and Sr. Lec. Suman Sharma.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Kathmandu Engineering College and Chanakya Software (P) Ltd. on 13 Magh 2073 at the college premises. The objective of this MoU is to collaborate in providing cooperative experiential learning (co-op) opportunities to engineering students at KEC. The MoU was signed by Asso. Prof. Chand S Rana, Principal of KEC on behalf of KEC and Mr. Rabin Kumar Shrestha, CEo of Chanakya Software (P) ltd.

As a pre-event for the 14th loCUS, the institute of Engineering organised a three day event at the Pulchowk Campus premises from 22 to 24 Magh. Students from Department of Computer Engineering participated in this pre-event as well. The three day event was structured in such a way that on Day 1 the participants would encounter an energy related problem in Nepal, on Day 2 the participants develop a solution to this problem, with the help of experts, and finally on Day 3 they present their solutions.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Kathmandu Engineering College and IT Training Nepal on 25 Magh 2073 at the college premises. The facilitator for this MoU was Mr. Anmol Ratna Bajracharya, iT Department associate, KEC. The MoU was signed to establish the terms and conditions under which IT trainings shall be conducted.

Students from the Department of Computer Engineering at KEC participated in an IT Meet Hackathon organised by Leapfrog Technology on 8 Magh 2073. The participants from KEC secured 2nd position in this event.

Tech Bihani 3.0 Software Competition, Advanced College of Engineering & Management, Kupondole, 8 and 9 Poush 2073

The PACE Club of Advanced College of Engineering and Management (ACEM), Kupondole organised a software competition titled ‘Tech Bihani 3.0’. Four students from the Department of Computer Engineering at KEC, namely Mr. Safal Raj Pandey, Mr. Pranay Shrestha, Mr. Prabesh Baniya, and, Mr. Abhijeet Pradhananga, participated in this competition and secured the First Position. The participants developed a virtual reality based android application having a virtual world canvas for the user to draw 360 degree images.

14th loCUS, Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, 27 - 29 Magh 2073

The students from the Department of Computer Engineering at KEC participated during the 14th loCUS event organised by the Institute of Engineering at the Pulchowk Campus from 27 to 29 Magh 2073. The three day exhibition is an annual event which is a platform for students and tech enthusiasts to express their ideas and explore the latest advancements in technology.

Within the framework of loCUS a weeklong event ‘Hack a Week’ was organised from 22 to 28 Magh at the Pulchowk Campus. This event involved a number of innovative participants who collaborated in teams to fashion out and develop innovative technology driven products like softwares, business modeling and marketing campaigns. Three participants from KEC, namely Mr. Amit Chaudhary, Mr. Enosh Shrestha and Mr. Kamal Paneru joined this event and developed a virtual assistant called ‘NearU’ targeted towards tourists. With the use of ‘NearU’ tourists can interact with the bot and ask questions about local culture such as cultural events happening nearby, restaurants that provide authentic local cuisine etc.

Similarly, a programming competition called ‘Code JAM Solo’ was also hosted during loCUS. The competition consisted of a set of algorithmic problems which had to be fixed within a stipulated amount of time. Competitors were allowed to use any programming language and development environment to obtain their solutions. The judging criterion was the maximum number of questions solved in the given time. Based on the scores Mr. Amit Chaudhary, student of Year iii at the Department of Computer Engineering was declared winner.

The Department of Electrical Engineering organised an orientation program for the fresh batch of 2073 of Bachelors in Electrical Engineering on 24 Kartik 2073 at college premises. The program was organised to welcome the students as well as familiarize them with the department and college. As many as 25 students and guardians from the new batch participated in the event. The event

was attended by Asso. Prof. Jayaiswer Man Pradhan, Head of Department, Department of Electrical Engineering, Sr. lec. archana Maharjan, Deputy Head of Department, Department of Electrical Engineering and faculty

members of the department. The event not only familiarized the new batch of students with the college environment but also discussed important topics required for the study of Electrical Engineering.

Educational tour to Sindhupalchowk, Department of Electrical Engineering, 30 Kartik 2073

The Department of Electrical Engineering organised a one day tour for the final year students of Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering at KEC. The tour was to the Sunkoshi Hydropower Station, Lamushangu, Sindhupalchowk

on 30 Kartik 2073 and was facilitated by Sr. lec. archana Maharjan, Deputy Head of Department, Department of Electrical Engineering; Er. Mahendra Kumar Das, lecturer; and Mr. Chitra Bahadur Khadka, Lab Chief. A total

of 44 students participated in this educational tour. The tour was aimed at familiarizing the students with the on site working mechanism and production of power in a hydropower plant.

Educational tour to Hetauda, Butwal and Pokhara, Department of Electrical Engineering, 2 - 6 Mangsir 2073

The Department of Electrical Engineering organised a five day field visit from 2 to 6 Mangsir for the students of Year III/ Part I. The students visited NEEK Transformer Manufacturing Company in Hetauda; National Electrical Turbine Manufacturer, Butwal; Seti Hydro Power Station and Phewa Hydro Power Station, Pokhara and Marsyangdi NEA. The main objectives of this visit were to introduce the students to different hydropower plants in Nepal and encourage detailed study of the power-plant equipments. A total of 44 students participated in this educational tour coordinated by Sr. Lec. Archana Maharjan, Deputy Head of Department, Department of Electrical Engineering; Er. Kanchan Bohara, Lecturer; and Er. Prabin Yadav, Lab Instructor. The tour was aimed at familiarizing the students with the working mechanism and production of power in hydropower. Furthermore, students were also acquainted with the manufacturing process of different equipment like turbine, transformer, etc.

The hydropower educational tour is essential for all students of different

levels in Bachelor’s of Electrical Engineering and, therefore, the department organises regular visits to major hydropower stations. These tours educate students with practical knowledge of working mechanism and relating them with theoretical knowledge in production and process of hydro-power, especially focusing on the manufacturing process of turbines and generators as well as familiarizing the students with the aspects of operation and maintenance of a Hydropower Station.

Talk Program on Hydropower, Department of Electrical Engineering, 16 Mangsir 2073

A talk program on Hydropower was organised by the Department of Electrical Engineering, with special initiation of the KEC Electrical Club, on 16 Mangsir 2073 at the college premises. The program was attended by 44 students of the final year and aimed at familiarizing the students about hydropower prior to their visit to different power stations as per the curriculum of Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering. The resource person for the talk program was Er. Mohan ratna Shakya, Deputy Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority. The program was attended by Asso. Prof. Jayaiswer Man Pradhan, Head of Department, Department of Electrical Engineering, Sr. Lec. Archana Maharjan, Deputy Head of Department, Department of Electrical Engineering as well as the faculty members of the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering.

Training on Hydropower Station, Department of Electrical Engineering, 2 - 7 Poush 2073

visits were arranged as per the curriculum of the course. The students visited the full size operating and generating plant. In groups of six to seven students, they studied the components of a hydropower station and its operating mechanisms. All groups were required to submit a formal report based on their study. All necessary permissions and logistics were arranged by the college.

The Department of Electrical Engineering organised a one week training on Hydropower Station to the students of Final Year in Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from 2 to 7 Poush 2073. This training was conducted following the visit of the students to Sunkoshi Hydropower, Sindhupalchowk, Kaligandhaki A, Kulekhani I, Kulekhani II, Marshyangdi, and, Middle Marshyangdi. The field

The Department of Electrical Engineering regularly organises interactions with students. Towards the mid of the semester the department organised interaction sessions including meeting with advisor. Students from Year I to Year IV participated in the interaction sessions held at the college premises. Besides the Adviser, the sessions also included discussions with Asso. Prof. Jayaiswer Man Pradhan, Head of Department, Department of Electrical Engineering, Sr. Lec. archana Maharjan, Deputy Head of Department, Department of Electrical Engineering where they discussed the class performance, students problems and gave advice and suggestions for their improvement.

Workshop on Electric Circuit, Department of Electrical Engineering in coordination with Electrical Club, 29 Magh and 1 Falgun 2073

The Department of Electrical Engineering in close coordination with the Electrical Club organised a two day workshop from 29 Magh to 1 Falgun 2073 at the KEC Mini-Hall. A total of 33 students ranging from Year I to Year III participated in this workshop. This mini project

workshop was conducted under the guidance of skilled faculty members and members of the Electrical Club. During the workshop the participants focused on two aspects - Soldering and Voltage Regulations, and, Water Level Indicator. The workshop was managed by Ms. Simran Shahi, Vice

President, Mr. Rajan K.C., Member, and Mr. Sonam Gyalgen Tamang on behalf of the Electrical Club. Final year student Mr. Arjun Bhusal and Lab In charge Mr. Prabin Yadab mentored the participants. The workshop included both the theoretical and practical aspects of electric circuit.

loCUS 2017 - Energy Hackathon, Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, 22 - 24 Magh 2073

The loCUS 2017 was organised by Institute of Engineering at the Pulchowk Campus from 22 to 24 Magh 2073. During this tech-event, three students from the Department of Electrical Engineering namely Mr. Biswas Basnet, Mr. Aelish Thapa and Ms. Simran Shahi participated in the Energy Hackathon. The work of these students was selected for presentation on demand side management topics, the students were able to formulate and present their solutions during the event.

This three day event is a platform for students to explore and express their engineering knowledge. The students encountered and had to deal with real-time challenges and problems.

Free Students’ Council, FSC, is a non political students’ wing run “by the students, to the students and for the students”. It is aimed to work for the benefit of the students as well as for fulfilling their duties in the college. it acts as a bridge between the college administration and the students. on the basis of total number of students in the college, 19 member council was to be formed among which chairman,

As part of the celebration of the win, the newly elected FSC committee organised a cleaning campaign and cleaned the college premises and the area surrounding KEC. The team was led by the chairman of the council Mr. Purna Bahadur Khadka and was participated by other committee personnels along with students from various departments of the college. FSC is determined to continue this noble work in a periodic basis in the coming days too.

Win in the Futsal Tournament, Star Futsal, 7 Chaitra 2073

A team of players from KEC coordinated by and representing the council participated in a futsal tournament titled 'G.P Smriti Inter College Futsal Tournament 2073', organised by the NSU Pokhara University on 7 Chaitra at Star Futsal Samakhusi. The tournament was organized with the slogan ‘Sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence’. KEC participated with an 8 member team, with the team captain Mr. Sailendra Parajuli, team members: Sushant Niraula, lizan Poudel, aayam Saud, Nihit Bhattari, Saugat Dhakal, Spandan Bikram Joshi, Nikesh Bhattarai. in the tournament, the KEC team lifted the winner’s cup.

Meet the Architects with Shankar Nath Rimal, AKAR, 10 Mangsir 2073

Association of KEC Architecture (AKAR) has been organising different classes under its Learning Through Interaction program. These classes are organised in order to help students of Architecture learn from the experiences of other students, in particular this has proved important for junior students to interact with their seniors and learn from their works and experiences. In this regard, four sessions were organised by AKAR. In the first session on 21 Kartik, batch of 2069 and 2071 facilitated the batch of 2072 on conducting literature review and case study analysis for their academic

Similarly, in the second phase of the programme on 3 Mangsir, the students were introduced to AKAR. While doing to so, AKAR informed the new students regarding their activities and events such as T-shirt designs, Guru Purnima celebration, exhibitions, etc.

With the aim of inspiring young aspiring architects, aKar organised the first Meet the architects event on 25 NoVEMBEr 2073. The chief guest of the event was Shankar Nath Rimal, a pioneer of Nepalese architecture. In the event, Shankar Nath Rimal shared his experience in architectural practice in Nepal. He also discussed the professional life, the hurdles involved in practice, works, and achievements, among others. The event was organised to familiarise the students with inspiring and motivating figures from the design and construction field. Faculty members and students of Department of architecture participated in the event.

Robotics Club

Yantra 5.0, Robotics Association of Nepal, 15 Mangsir 2073 onward

The Robotics Club of KEC participated in the week-long event Yantra 5.0 organised by Robotics Association of Nepal at Army Complex, Lagankhel from 15 Mangsir 2073. Based on the theme ‘Agro-Innovation’, the event comprised of International Robotics Competitions for tech enthusiast, Creative Computing for transferring the skill of coding, creating and computing to artists, doctors, and bankers, Art-tech exhibition to explore the work of artists and engineers, Paper Presentation to find out the overall development of the

existing products, Yantra Learning Software competition for software developers along with Yantra Incubation to encourage, curate and mentor the innovation into viable business focused on Agriculture. The participation of the Robotics Club of KEC was facilitated by Er. Nirajan Koirala, faculty member of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, KEC. During the Yantra 5.0 competition, the students of the Robotics Club of KEC secured the First Runner-Up position.

Besides, the Robotics Club of KEC also organised a workshop and interaction program at the Shree Namuna Aawasiya School at Parbat, Nepal. The students involved in the Robotics Club organised this program to understand the interest of school students in technology and discuss the basic concepts of electronics and communication engineering with school students.

A welcome and farewell program was organised by AKAR at the Seminar Hall of KEC on 28 Magh 2073. The architecture family welcomed its newest members, the batch of 2073, while bidding goodbye to the batch of 2068. During the program, Asso. Prof. Kailash Shrestha, Head of Department of architecture, delivered a welcome speech. Similarly, Prof. Hirendra Man Pradhan, Chairman, KEC; Asso. Prof. Chand S Rana, Principal, KEC also delivered encouraging speech to the attendees. During the event, the department felicitated semester toppers from each year namely Mr. Aadesh Raj Sharma for Year I/II, Ms. Riya Sthapit for Year ii/ii, Mr. Prabal Dahal for Year iii/II, Ms. Shrijana Shrestha for Year IV/II and Mr. Satish Manandhar for Year V/II. Similarly, design toppers for each semester Ms. Kriti Shrestha (Year I/ii), Ms. Dipti Mainali (Year ii/ii), Mr. Krijon Bahadur Shrestha (Year III/II), Ms. Surakshya Pradhan (Year IV/II), and Mr. Dibash adhikari and Mr Satish Manandhar, thesis toppers, were also honoured during the program.

The main objective of the event was to share current design perspectives and practices around the world through interactive sessions. Mr. Shirshak Baniya conceptualised, and designed the event.

Conceptualised by Ms. Suvechha Tandan and her team, AKAR conducted a book review on 1 JANUARY 2073. The main aim of this review is to cultivate a culture of reading and writing among architecture students. Conducting such review from time to time will facilitate students to understand and learn basic components of design along with autobiographical narratives and quotes of renowned architects all over the world. The event showcased graphical presentation of ‘Letters To A Young Architect’, authored by Christopher Benninger.

Workshop on Visual Studio using C#, KEC IT

Club, 15 - 16 Magh 2073Kshitiz Seminar is an initiative of the KEC iT Club with the objective of building familiarity with the current IT industry in Nepal and beyond and interacting with experts who share their experiences during the event. This one day seminar was organised on 24 Mangsir 2073 and was open to all students.

A workshop on Visual Studio using C# was organised by the KEC IT Club on 15 and 16 Magh 2073 at the college premises. The workshop was facilitated by Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) and the participants for the workshop were the students of Year I and II in Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering.
