Alumni Association has ‘Mini-College’

Has American politica taken a sharp turo to thè right?Yes ...aort of, opined 1UPUI Profeaaora Richard A. Fredland. Patrick J. McGeever and Charles Winslow at a recent “Alumni Mini-College" s ponsò red by thè 1UPU1 School of Liberal Arte Alumni Association.“ Perhaps it is thè beginning of thè end of an age," suggested Dr. Fredland. chairman of and associate professor in thè politicai Science department. He asked thè audience to examine thè extroverted path of American government in thè past 20 years and pointed out thè recent returo to a “Fortress America" mentality.“The people who identify themselves as conservati ves believe they ha v e had a victory," stated Fredland. adding that their power is felt strongly in current foreign policy planning. He cited several such examples, including thè appearance of South African leaders in this country shortly before Reagan’s inauguration, and U.S. support of “moderately repressive" governments— “better known as Latin American totalitarian dieta torships."Dr. McGeever. associate professor of politicai Science at IUPUI. suggested that American politica is on thè same path but has assumed

different—and probably ineffecti ve— means of movement.Ina questionand-answer period designed to demonstrate this premise, thè audience revealed its belief that federai taxes. federai spendine. federai budget deficits and federai intrusion into private Uvea were all too great The majority felt that Reagan s domestic program will noi lessen any of these burdens.McGeever went on to suggest that thè administration'a proposais will not reduce but inerease thè government’s intake through taxation, to cover thè planned inerease in defense spending Reagan‘s plans to reindustrialize America by providing investors with more money (through tax breaks) will result in stili less money going to thè poor and middle dasses who do not or cannot save it. he added.Dr. Winslow, assistant professor of politicai Science at IUPUI, concluded thè program with his belief that American politica has taken a turo to thè right in rhetoric and images, suggesting that Americana as a whole ha ve always been conservative."Because thè Fre neh are going to thè left. thè rest of thè worla must be going in some other direction." he quipped.

She earned her master’» degree in education at IUPUI in 1976, when she was 61 years old. She doesn't have a teaching job right now because School 41, where she taught, was phased out in thè

Learn & Shop increases enrollment, popularityby Michael W. Meiring"IUPUI has received more attention through Learn & Shop than from any other program," States Dr. James R. East, associate dean of thè School of Liberal Arts and founder and coordina tor of thè Learn & Shopprogram

According to Dr. East, Learn & Shop is being copied in 20 States and in Canada and ita popularity is stili growing. Surveys conducted by IUPUI reveal that convenient locations and scheduling are thè main attractions of Learn & Shop. The program was boro out of a

ing to Dr. East. In thè faUof 1978, IUPUI enrollment dropped eightpercent. The university faced losing some of ita funding if enrollment could not be increased.By thè spring of 1979 thè program was underway with

initial enrollment more than 500. Now, a little over two years later, enrollment is in excess of 2,000 and thè prediction for this fall is 2,500.The program combine» thè attraction and convenience of thè shopping maUs with thè positive aspects ofgaining a college education. Currently there are no majors offered through l^earn & Shop but a student may obtain an associate » degree {from thè School of Liberal Arts or thè School of Science) from which 80 percent of thè courses are offered.

"This program was planned primarily but not exclusively for women,” claims Dr. East. In thè first year, 80 percent of Learn & Shop'» studente were women; now. 73 percent are women.Learn & Shop started out with a total of 25 courses and Dr.East says that this fall there will be more than 100 courses to choose from.He is quick to point out that this program is just a feeder System for thè university. In thè future he says that thè program will probably be able to offer maiors but that "they (shopping malie) are not meant to be area» of leaming.”In any case, thè shopping malls are pleased with thè resulta. Larry Davis, assistant

manager ot G tendale Shopping Center, says he has seen rnany Learn & Shop studente in thè mali carrying shopping bags along with tneir hook» Tm sure it has helped thè Stores very much,” he adda. Many, if not all of thè major Stores such as Blocks, JCPenney. Sears. Laxarus, and L.S. Ayres donate thè availabie time of their training rooms reni-free to thè programDr. East is proud of thè faci that Learn A Shop student» maintain thè sanie number of contact hours with thè instructors as on-campu» studente do In most case», thè instructor of a Learn & Shop class teaches thè same class on campus. According to Dr. East. records show that achievement i in non-campus courses is significantly higher than in on- campus courses. He does admit there has been a problem with getting audio- visual equipment, such as over- head projectors and movie projectors. to thè malls but adds that thè professor» usually transport thè equipment themselves.IUPUI's non-traditional image has helped thè program gain support from studente and administrators. cinema‘Raiders ’ has ‘sparkle, flash and bangby JoAnn ShaaksThe recently released film, "Raiders of thè Lost Ark", is more firn than an entire day at Kings Island.

SUrring Harrìson Ford ("Star Wars"), 'TUiders" has all of thè sparkle, flash, and bang of a Fourth of July fireworka extravaga nxa.Indeed, thè film rockets through an excitin4, suspenseful story written by Philip Kaufman and "Star Wars" , creator George Lucas. The story, set in thè late 1930's, centers around a Nazi plot to find thè lost Ark of thè Covenant.

. When thè United States discovers thè German schema, they hire Indiana Jones (Harrìson Ford), a daring archeologist who al so happens

to be an export on thè Ark, to locate it before thè Germana do. The thrilling search for thè archaeological prize leads Jones through many Ingenious perils.Ranging from an encounter with a scimtar-wielding Arab. a submarine rìde, and a market place brawl to one of thè beat car chase scenes ever recorded in film, "Raiders" has suspense that never quits.Perhaps what really crea tea much of thè film a tension, however, is thè naturai, comfortable acting style which Ford brings to thè role of Indy Jones. His character, as well as thè film iteelf, is reminiscent of thè work of such greats as Humphrey Bogart and Charteton Heston. But Ford is not alone in his bid for acting laurels. Karen Alien is stunning in her

portrayal of Jones's gutay girl- friend, Marion.During thè mad flurrv of summer activity, "Raiders of thè Lost Ark" is a must-see movie. Indeed, it is one of thè beat filma to come from Hollywood in qui te some time.
