Monitoring your blood pressure The heart acts as a pump pushing blood round the body through its blood vessels. Blood pressure measures the force of the blood as it presses against the walls of the various vessels, this can vary according to the area the blood is travelling through. What is generally known as “blood pressure” is the flow of blood through the artery of the upper arm. Normal blood pressure varies between the “maximum” or “systolic” and “minimum” or “diastolic” pressure. Systolic pressure should normally be between 100-140mmHg and diastolic pressure should be between 60-90mmHg.

Hypertension Hypertension is a chronic condition with constant elevated blood pressure which is higher than the recognised normal levels (minimum >90 and maximum >140). This gives rise to an increased risk of developing heart disease which is worryingly on the increase and can be found in many adults (roughly 20%). It is often a contributory factor for reduced life expectancy for patients with hypertension. Hypertension can lead to other medical complications affecting: brain, heart, retina, and even blood vessels. Hypertension is recognised as one as the key risk factors contributing to cardiovascular disease which today affects more and more people.

What you should know about taking readings at homeRegular monitoring of your blood pressure at home is an important step you can take to keep check on your condition and look out for early warning signs. It is important to take regular readings, where possible fitting in with your daily life, in other words in the home, so as to help to get accurate, reliable readings in a relaxed environment. How to choose a good home blood pressure monitor

All good blood pressure monitors need to undergo clinical testing. Good monitors will have certificates to show that testing has been carried out detailing the type of tests it has passed. A recognised safety certificate is the best way to check your device is reliable and accurate.

The most advanced technology now makes it possible to visualise the last 3 readings taken which is what guidelines on managing hypertension recommend. These same guidelines also highlight the importance of taking more than one reading and calculating the average*. You should allow at least 2/3 minutes to pass before taking each new reading.

For ease of use look for monitors with as few command switches as possible, ideally with only one on/off command. A single command will make the device more user friendly in any situation.

The monitor should have a wide display screen that is well-positioned for easy reading even in poorly lit rooms.

Taking your temperature Taking your temperature is a way of measuring how well the body is regulating itself. Body temperature can vary from person to person because of different genders, individual physiques and even subjective factors such as stress, diet, emotional state, fever.

Temperature Normal body temperature is around 37,5° C (96.8° F). Anything higher is considered to be a temperature (fever) which is how we can recognise the symptoms of illness. Taking an accurate reading of your temperature is an important guide to your health and well-being.

When to take your temperatureGenerally speaking you should not need to measure your temperature more than once or twice a day. The best time to take a reading is first thing in the morning, or late in the afternoon, in the evening body temperature may often be one degree higher. Never take your temperature directly after eating, or drinking very hot or cold drinks, or after smoking or taking physical exercise.

Different methods for taking temperature readingsNot everyone knows that using different places to take your temperature (forehead, mouth, armpit, rectum, ear) can give rise to slight variations in the results.
