UBC Filipino Students Association - Kababayan Kasama System
Citation preview
The Kasama Groups The Kasama group of UBC-FSA Kababayan offers Kaba members with opportunities to be more involved with the organization and to meet and form new ties with their fellow kasamas, club members and executives. The group serves as a training ground for those who are aspiring to hold executive positions in the future. Being a part of the UBC-FSA Kasamas gives you the chance to share your input and assist the various executives in planning their events. In addition, kasamas are invited to pitch their ideas to their respective executive member and are given a chance to take on projects of their own.
Being a Kasama you will gain skills in teamwork and project management. Being a Kasama is meant to build your capacity as a leader and help develop organizing skills. Being a Kasama will give you opportunities to network with others and take on challenges throughout the academic school year.
A Letter from VP Administration Past Kasama Member
Dear Future Kasama Members,
I want to welcome you on this exciting and fulfilling opportunity. As kasama members, you will get the chance to not only undergo professional development through your tasks but also meet other amazing people in the process.
I was a kasama member last year and I definitely enjoyed the things that I did and the projects that I volunteered in. Last year, I helped out with the Halo-Halloween, Barrio Fiesta and the fundraiser for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. I learned a lot about event planning, developed my professional development skills and made several new friends. In the beginning, I was quite apprehensive about joining and I felt like I wasn’t sure if I can handle everything with my other commitments. After a year, I’m absolutely glad that I chose to join. Currently, my family is still in the Philippines and I miss the things and the people that I left behind. Being a kasama member helped me feel closer to the Philippines and all things that I miss.
If you are having second thoughts about becoming a kasama member, I urge you to give it a chance and have a conversation with the executive members about your role and commitment. There are also a variety of tasks and roles so you’ll definitely find something that suits your interest. There are now a few changes in the kasama member structure that we hope will benefit the members. We want the kasama program to help the members develop professionally, to get in touch with the Filipino culture and to have a community in UBC. You don’t have to be Filipino to be a part of the program. Everyone is welcome here.
I sincerely hope that you choose to partake in the program! Please don’t hesitate to approach us or connect with us if you have any questions or concerns. We will do our best to make this program a learning opportunity and a venue for celebration.
Sincerely,
Anica Villamayor

Hi Kasamas,
If you're interested in joining the Social Sector with us then I'm pretty
sure we already like you. Firstly, as the "social sector,” we are responsible in
making sure that this year, Kaba has super successful events that people will be
talking about for years to come. But for real though, we want to make super fun
events that people will want to come to! Give the people what they want. This is
a democracy. With that being known, this sector is responsible for everything to
do with making an event. That includes the planning--- from the decorations to
the food to the theme to what we feed the people attending. It's A LOT OF
WORK, but hopefully, you're like us and that despite the hours on hours of
planning -- calling caterers, canvassing for decorations, putting together
program schedules, etc. -- you'll find this all to be extremely rewarding (because
it IS extremely rewarding and it's sooo nice to be able to say that you planned an
event -- idk, it feels good). So yes, JOIN THE DARK SIDE, WE HAVE
COOKIES (well, we will have cookies --- or whatever left over food there are
left after events! just kidding)
Lots of love,
Josh Ng & Jamie Dee

we do not discriminate against other letters)

KASAMAS!
Hi there! I'm Claire Chan, this year's VP of External Affairs. Here at Externals,
we deal mostly with the Alumni Mentorship Program and Sponsorships. Aside
from that, our team will be working closely with the VP of Finance, Lorenzo
Ledesma, and the Fundraising Sector to create creative and revenue raising
fundraisers that will support KABA initiatives throughout the year!
This year is especially exciting for us as we are launching a pilot project: the
Alumni Mentorship Program mentioned above. It'll be an avenue for KABA
members to get a peek into the working world through our partners, young
Filipino professionals, who are keen to give back to the community by
supporting these students.
If you are interested in any of these things, feel free to sign on.
Here at Externals, we focus on the intersection between personal and
professional development and how this can be used to give back to our club,
Kababayan FSA. :) Note: Not only for the members, but most especially for
YOU KASAMAS.
As you help the club by hunting down sponsors and what have you, you will
also learn, grow, and gain leadership training and opportunities. (See: Learning
Outcomes)
Therefore, expect monthly meetings, opportunities to share your opinions at said
meetings, team bonding activities and other stuff we have in store. (Let's keep
some mystery, shall we?)
Bring your ideas, your smiles and an open mind. Excited to meet you, to work
with you, and most importantly, to learn from all of you this year. :)
Yours truly,
Claire Chan

Hey Kaba Members!
On behalf of your KAMP directors, Mr. Sol Diana and I, we would like to
invite you to get involved in UBC Kababayan’s outreach program known as
KAMP!
KAMP is a weekly mentorship program where volunteer UBC students
interact and mentor youth from different high schools around Metro Vancouver.
In the program, mentors are able to gain experiences that promote leadership,
creativity, and teamwork. This year we plan to make KAMP bigger and better
than the past years by allowing for more opportunities for mentors to get
involved!
Yours truly,
